Firstly, I am not fond of werewolves. I’m more of a vampire fan. I bought this book from the “stuff your kindle day” so I’m just like, why not?

Imagine my surprise when I found myself riveted and unable to put the book down! The story was very engaging. It’s the characters and sense of camaraderie for me. The gayness wasn’t even central to the story and I didn’t mind. I didn’t mind?! I always mind! But with this book, it was a mere aspects of the main character’s package, not the main importance. Now THAT is good storytelling. Where the author is literally tugging me from my chin and could lead me wherever they wish and I’m still there, waiting to see what comes next. I am just so glad there’s more books on this series to get lost in.

I Was A Teenage...

This book starts out a bit slowly, but once it starts rolling it really moves well. I love how affirming and utterly nonchalant the pack is towards gender and sexuality. I did want to hit Jade's dad when she came out with her animal. I stayed mad at him for the rest of the book. There are a few pieces that did not get resolved, and it will be interesting to see what the next book holds.

The first time I read Wolf Healer as an advance reader (free, before final edits), I was blown away by the twist in this story. That really impressed me, since I find myself to be difficult to surprise.

Reading this polished version (which I have purchased) of a unique High School/Shifter fantasy was a true pleasure! My review is based on this final version, and is in no way affected by the fact that my first read-through was free. All opinions are honest and this is a spoiler-free review.

What a great debut novel for Rahr!

LGBTQ+ elements are integrated naturally throughout the tale, focusing on self-acceptance, self-love, the struggles of peer pressure and familial pressures to be different forms of "normal", and empowers youths to be kind but confident in who they are as people and the way they treat others.

Jade starts the story off knowing her path in life without question. She has poured her heart and soul into achieving that goal, and waited for the day that she herself would finally be able to shift into wolf form.

But friendship and love trumps her best-laid plans, and she finds herself in a whole new world within the world that used to be her safe zone amid clueless humans.

With teen angst and drama pitted against very real-life stakes under the cover of Shifter acceptance, this tale is one that many YA Shifter lovers who want something deeper and more 'real'. Romance doesn't take center-stage here, and the theme that does is beautifully riveting.

Well done, Huckleberry! I can't wait to read book two.

Amazing First Novel!

I approached this book with trepidation; I've been here before and the path is littereed with young women in angst, with any excuse to avoid truth and a snarky bubble gum voice. - None of that here; a clear but young voice, people who aren't afraid of truth or each other and easy grins.

This was a page-turner, I am soo looking forward to the next installment and hope that Huckle can keep it going as Jade grows up.

Loved

I haven't read too many books on shifters especially of the were form. I actually loved this book and plan to read the whole series. This story was so incredibly interesting. I was fighting through a vast array of emotions. Big props to the author. You have definitely got my attention. Huckleberry Rahr I have noticed you.

Charming and riveting first novel by Huckleberry Rahr. Written for teens/YA, but captured my imagination, even though it’s been years. Her main character is a young woman approaching adulthood, self-aware, well-friended, and devoted to her fascinating family. This offers a new twist on the werewolf genre, providing a host of surprising and clever turns. Her characters are diverse and probably a good representation of a growing segment of that age cohort in which difference is not only tolerated, but celebrated. It certainly serves as a role model for how to get there. Most of her characters are delightful to follow. Younger and older have each other’s backs and exemplify kindness, which provides an especially welcome escape during these difficult days. Wolf Healer is the first in a series and you’ll be excited to read what comes next. No doubt you’ll also be excited to offer the book as a gift to the young people in your life.

The Main Character Drew Me In

Wow. I immediately connected with the main character, Jade, who's terrible at gym class, likes girls, and clearly has something special about her. Next thing I knew, I was sucked into high school werewolf pack drama, a clique of good friends and a secret that spun the story into epic lines for me. This book is very well written and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Prepare for some action-packed scenes, high stakes and the sassy banter that goes with friendship circles. This was a joy to read. Definitely give it a try.

Very fun read. Not only was there a loveable cast, but the main character, Jade, was the exact opposite I expected her to be. In classic werewolf tales, the main character oozes with teenage angst, but Jade was calm, like a river or chamomile (you'll get the reference once you read this). Strongly suggest if you want a strong protagonist who is caring and loving, but will destroy anyone who looks at her friends the wrong way. Excited to read book two and see where the author will take us next.

First off let me just say WOW OMG. I did not want to put this down, I was immediately hooked. Also a bonus for me is the fact that it's LGBTQ friendly. I was sad because I finished it, I wanted it to keep going, then I realized there is a book 2 BONUS. There is so much more I could say but I'm not going to spoil it. You have to read it for yourself. Totally recommend this book. The author is AMAZING!!!!

You had me at "wolf."

This young adult urban fantasy is geared more toward a teen-aged audience but I believe many adults would enjoy it as well.
The protagonist is a high school sophomore named Jade, an excellent student who believes her life goals are pretty much set...until her trip to Florida when everything is thrown into chaos.
At its heart, this is primarily a story about the strength of friendship and familial bonds. There's also wonderfully humorous scenes and teenage snark galore. And let's not forget about the furry side of the fun! Yes, there are werewolves.
If you enjoy paranormal tales that include an LGBTQ cast but would prefer one without a romance, then this is the book for you.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was amazing to see the diversity in this book and the general overall acceptance of others on their own terms. I also loved that, although it was YA, it was NOT about fated mates. Instead, it was about family and acceptance overall and being true to yourself. It also cracked me up that the regular adults kept not believing that Jade was the competent healer she was. I am looking forward to learning more about her calming powers as well. I have already recommended this book to others and will continue to do so.

The writing was very good, and the editing was well done. Overall, the sense of community throughout the book reminded me of Audrey Faye’s/Debora Geary’s books.

This is a great choice for young adults and/or those in the LGBTQ crowd. With an inclusive cast of quirky and relatable characters, Wolf Healer is funny, heart-warming, and quite suspenseful at times. If you enjoy urban fantasy paranormal tales--especially about werewolves or other shifters--but were looking for something lighter on the romance and violence end of things, then this could be right up your alley.

Wolf Healer is a young adult fantasy novel written by author Huckleberry Rahr. This book was an easy read. Even though it’s 396 pages, I had it read by the end of the day, after starting it that morning.

It’s a story about werewolves and revolves around a teenager named Jade and her pack/family. Jade is the pack healer and has the same problems that a lot of teens have. It’s a cute story that contains more drama (which I considered on the mild side) than action. I tend to favor more action and intensity when it comes to a fantasy novel, but the story was interesting enough to keep me reading.
The drama in Wolf Healer revolves around the main character Jade and her fears about her pack/family accepting her when they see she’s different from them.

I loved the diversity of the characters that the author created. It was nice to see the transgender teen, and those who were gay, or lesbian being treated like it was no big deal by the people who surrounded them. In a perfect world we’d see that in our everyday lives, but the world is far from perfect so unfortunately the story doesn’t show what it’s really like for teens these days.

I do think seeing this kind of acceptance in a novel is a step towards helping others open their mind, and heart, to what they don’t understand, and accepting it. So, I’m giving a huge round of applause to the author Huckleberry Rahr, along with five gold stars, for making this subject a part of her novel and doing so with dignity and grace.

Wolf Healer is the first book of the Jade Stone Chronicles. So far, the series contains six books. Although the story was really cute, and I did enjoy it, it feels like it on the younger side of a YA novel. The main character and her friends are in high school, but I had to keep reminding myself of that because I felt like they were in middle school instead.

I think someone who is 13 would enjoy it more than a 15- or 16-year-old.
It’s just a really easy read with mild drama and very little action. Action which is also mild and doesn’t have much conflict within it.
It is a good story and worth reading.

I picked this up on Kindle Unlimited after reading the description, and I’m really glad I did. The story follows fifteen-year-old Jade Stone, daughter of the werewolf alphas, who returns from a trip to Florida completely changed physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I loved how the author focuses less on the usual werewolf drama and more on Jade’s personal journey of identity and belonging.

What stood out to me most was the theme of acceptance. Jade’s friends and brother are absolute bright spots, giving her the support she needs while she tries to figure out what her new life even looks like. But the tension inside the pack felt very real, some people are understanding, while others… definitely aren’t. That internal conflict gave the story a lot of depth.

The plot balances supernatural elements with very relatable teen struggles: family expectations, secrets coming to light, and the fear of not fitting in anymore. I also appreciated Jade’s dream of becoming her pack’s next healer, it added a meaningful layer to her character, and I liked watching her wrestle with whether that dream is still possible.

If you enjoy YA paranormal stories that focus on character growth, friendship, and inclusion with a bit of werewolf lore mixed in this is absolutely worth the read. The ending left me hopeful for Jade and curious about where her journey goes next.

An entire community to fall in love with.

I don't read a lot of werewolf books. (I tend to be more witchy.) It did take me a bit to really accept this book. I wasn't sure how I felt about all the twists. I sometimes felt that there was too much coincidence. Once things were set into place, though, I loved it. I found that I liked what felt like a more true sense of how the animal aspects of werewolves would interact. I liked that the author was not afraid to get dark at times.
Mostly I loved how diverse the characters were. The difference in how people were treated by those who knew them and by those who simply judged. How the reactions to diversity played out in the werewolf community as well as in the regular human community. I loved how well both the main and supporting characters felt fully developed. I felt like I really got to know and care about so many of the people!
I truly recommend this book. I plan to read more!

A great werewolf book for teens (and adults!) who wish to avoid the romance-heavy plots of most paranormal stories but still want a little grit and danger. No romance subplot in this book; although the main character does have a romantic interest, it is a very minor aspect of the story and the focus is more on the friend-group relationships and typical teen dynamics. LGTBQ characters are represented without the book being strictly ABOUT LGTBQ; the emphasis is more on the main character Jade's struggle to adjust to a major change in her life that could lead to her expulsion from her parents' werewolf pack. Themes of friendship, strong family ties, and acceptance. A fun read full of humor and heart.

My journey with this book started on rough sand. I wasn't in the right mind set to read to read the book when I started. I'm bad at trying new things. However, I pick this book back up yesterday and have finished just now. It is one of the most inclusive books that I have ever read. It is also one of the best werewolf based story that I have picked up, including some rather popular series. I can not wait to continue the story.

Interesting read

So this book was pretty interesting, it had some twists, I liked Jade and several other characters, especially her mother. But I feel the whole "should they join" rhetoric dragged on a bit too long and the deaths towards the end seemed needless when Jade then became a wolf right after.

This is a coming of age no spice kind of shifter story. There is an f/f relationship building but again it is YA. I loved the story and the FMC is refreshing! I won't give spoilers but suffice it to say, this shifter story isn't like all the rest!
