John Fielder spent 4 years exploring the Great Plains of eastern Colorado for the publication of a new book about Colorado's 3rd largest county, Weld. Weld County: 4,000 Square Miles of Grandeur, Greatness & Yesterdays contains over 175 images of farms and ranches, the Poudre, Platte and St. Vrain rivers, the grasslands and Pawnee Buttes, old towns and buildings, and wildlife galore...even then & now photographs of historical Weld County. Weld's de facto official historian, Peggy Ford Waldo, has written text to connect the dots from the county's creation in 1861 to what has become today Colorado's fastest growing major county.
John Fielder (August 2, 1950 – August 11, 2023) was an American landscape photographer, nature writer, the publisher of over 40 books, and a conservationist.
John Fielder's talent shines in this coffee table book about Weld County. The written portions are a little depressing at times, given all the dead and dying towns, but on the other hand, I now have a list of things I want to visit (Centennial Village, St. Vrain State Park, etc.).
A true love letter to Weld County. Bittersweet at times, but truly captures the honest beauty of this area. Particularly love the images of the small towns, and the history provided by Peggy Waldo. "She liked history, and she later learned to love history, for the way it connected everything."
