From the **** PLEASE NOTE THIS STORY FOLLOWS ON AFTER BOOK 13 IN THE SERIES. IT SHOULD NOT BE READ AS A PREQUEL.
Jenna Alton is an FBI agent who will stop at nothing to put those who hurt the innocent behind bars. An addictive short-read origin story about how she became Black Rock Falls’ most loved Sheriff.
Jenna has been working undercover for four years and now she’s ready to take down the most dangerous man she’s ever met—her husband, Michael.
Pulling shopping bags out of the back of her car, Jenna scans the house for Michael but he’s nowhere to be seen. Stepping into the marble hallway, she sighs with relief at the thought of just one more night here. But first, she must survive the most high-stakes night of her Michael is planning something deadly behind closed doors, and Jenna must find a place to hide where she can listen to every word – then, she must run for her life.
But as night falls and the guests arrive, Jenna sees a distressed young girl being dragged into the house, and she knows she can’t leave an innocent soul behind.
Staying will risk the case Jenna’s already sacrificed so much for, but innocent lives will be lost if she doesn’t bring this twisted monster down. With the clock ticking, can Jenna save the girl and make it out alive?
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book before publication.
Full disclaimer: I have never read any other book in this series, and this is book #14. It is the prequel to one of the main characters, so I didn't feel like I was missing any information.
THE PLOT
Jenna wasn't always Jenna. This novel reflects on who she was, where it all started, and her journey to become who she is today.
MY OPINION
This is a brisk read; it's only 187 pages so you can power through it very quickly. And boy does it move quickly.
See, I'm a finicky reviewer and I know it. I don't like books that drag on, but I don't like books that move at lightning-speed where I feel like an unbalanced toddler running down the beach about to face-plant at any moment. I need that sweet spot, and it's elusive. This book was TOO fast. I was that unbalanced toddler... just propelling forward on pure momentum. No time to really think, feel, react, or understand what I was doing.
The long paragraphs and chapters are stuffed... nay, overflowing with action. One second Jenna is a trophy wife, and the next second she's moved on, and then two paragraphs later she's moved on even further. The amount of stuff that happens in one thicc ass chapter doesn't give you any time to digest what you just read and really FEEL anything or create a suspenseful atmosphere because the resolution is right after the period. You're just being shoved along to the next (what I would consider) pivotal scene, but it doesn't feel pivotal because three lines later, something else crazy is happening. Do you catch my drift?
Most times I feel like a plot is overstretched to fit the "typical" length of a novel, but in this case, I think the book should've been double the pages so the author could explore the events and create some emotional impact. There were a lot of cool storylines going on, but once again, the bullet-train pace of the book didn't give me any time to connect with what was happening.
My last complaint is the writing quality. This is my first D.K. Hood book, so I don't know if this is the norm, or if it's a result of cramming as much info as possible in less than 200 pages. I hope it's the latter. There was no depth to the writing and it was very "here's what's happening" (does that make sense)?
After writing this all out, I think my 3 stars is generous. It's more like a 2 star read. But I'll toss this an extra star based on the multitude of interesting storylines (albeit briefly) touched upon and the fact D.K. Hood can get to the mf point faster than I can take advantage of a 50% off sale.
PROS AND CONS
Pros: Lots of interesting storylines... You could write an entire novel about each one Cons: Pace makes your head spin and it's hard to "get into" the book because you have no time to digest what you just read and build any anticipation or suspense. Writing quality was bleh but I think that's due to the extreme pacing of this book.
Jenna has been working undercover for four years and now she's ready to take sown the most dangerous man she's ever met - her husband, Michael.
This is Jenna's story, telling us how she arrived and quickly became the sheriff in Black Rock Falls. This prequel tells us when Jenna worked undercover and Jenna isn't quite the tough person she is today. We learn why she is now so security conscious and protective of the vulnerable. This is a short but fast paced read, It's also tense, gripping and thoroughly enjoyable. I wouldn't read this book as a standalone but I would advise you to, if you haven't already, read the series in the order they were written in. You won't be disappointed.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #DontLookBack in exchange for an honest review.
After reading Kane's backstory earlier this year I was so ready for Jenna's
A short story that tells the reader how Jenna ended up in Black Rock Falls after working undercover. It also covers her first case in town and how she gets to know the locals. I love this series and it was great to learn more about Jenna. A must read for lovers of this fantastic series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for my advanced copy of this book to read.
D.K. Hood has developed a strong series through the use of full novels, to delve into a number of poignant topics. This is the second novella in the series that seek to explore backstories of the protagonists. While D.K. Hood warns not to read them as prequel stories, she does look to the past in order to explain the present. This piece is all about the life of Jenna Alton, before she arrived in Black Rock Falls. Working undercover as DEA Agent Avril Parker, things go awry and a raid ensues, making sure Parker is the target of a cartel. Seeking to reinvent herself, Parker becomes Jenna Alton and arrives in Montana, ready to effect change.
Avril Parker has been building a case, working undercover, as a DEA agent for four year. Now it’s time to act and take down a highly dangerous member of the cartel she’s infiltrated, her husband, Michael. While she has been the dutiful wife, she knows that there is a major event taking place, one that could be the raid she has been working towards.
Realising just how bad things have become, Avril waits for dark, when everything is supposed to go down. In a lightning attack, DEA agents storm the property, leaving Michael and others in senior positions within the cartel scrambling to negotiate plea bargains.
With her life in danger, Avril will have to undergo significant changes in Witness Protection. A new face, new body, and definitely a new name. With a lead on placing her in a small Montana community, Avril is transformed into Jenna Alton, a former Baltimore PD hot-shot looking for a new life. She agrees to the change, as long as she can blend in.
Arriving in Black Rock Falls, Montana, Jenna Alton seeks to make a name for herself and secure the role of sheriff. It’s little crime and a cozy community to boot. Jenna is happy with the move and eager to set down some roots, while trying to keep her law enforcement career going. A great novella by Hood to fill in many of the Jenna Alton gaps.
D.K. Hood has yet to stop with her slew of powerful thriller stories, rich with action and series development. Offering up a chance to fill in the gaps of Jenna. Alton’s past and how she evaded the cartel, Hood provides a solid narrative to guide the reader through this shorter piece, without cutting out the details or action. The momentum of the piece helps push things along and leaves the reader wanting more, as the story connects with the start of the series in Black Rock Falls.
Character development has long been a cornerstone to the series, which is offered up throughout. This prequel-type piece offers the reader the needed backstory to better understand Jenna Alton’s past life and the reason she is so secretive about it. While there has been mention of a cartel hunting for her, it is only with this piece that the truth comes out for all to see. Much like the previous novella that expounded on the life of Dave Kane, this one offers the other protagonist’s life story and does so masterfully.
The series relies on major twists and story arcs to fuel its momentum. While D.K. Hood has been working on backstory here, she does offer up some great moments of action and a few twists. Things in this piece connect well with the series I have come to love. I am eager to find more breadcrumbs embedded in the narratives, as they relate to the past lives of both Alton and Kane. Hood seems to never run out of ideas, as my binge continues with this series. I cannot wait to see what’s to come.
Kudos, Madam Hood, for another quick break from the intense story writing this series has provided to dedicated fans.
Don't Look Back is the latest book in the police procedural series featuring Detectives David Kane and Jenna Alton. I picked up this series with Whisper in the Night (book 6) and I also thoroughly enjoyed books seven through to thirteen.
Set in Black Rock Falls, Montana, Sheriff Jenna Alton makes a very likeable detective. Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small town, which has certainly seen more than its fair share of murders! Her deputy, David Kane is a former Special Forces marksman with exceptional profiling skills.
In this one, the reader is given Jenna's back story including all of her nuances. After years away from the FBI DEA, her situation with all the gritty details and Jenna's introduction to Black Rock Falls is revealed. As I knew it would be, this novella was well balanced and solid and it had me glued to the pages. Spectacular and riveting, the tension snowballed, especially in the first half. In a story rich in drama the writing flowed effortlessly and swiftly and I will be seeking out the first five instalments of this masterful series. A brilliant, compelling, pulse-pounding crime-thriller. 100% recommended.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for DK Hood, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 8th February 2022.
This is the third book I have read by this author. It is also the origin book in the 'Detective Kane and Alton' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Cross My Heart' (book twelve in the series) and 'Fallen Angel' (book thirteen in the series) and which I highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'If you’re a fan of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot, you will love this gripping read.' I am a huge fan of all three of those authors so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of DK Hood and if this is half as good as 'Cross My Heart' and 'Fallen Angel' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 24 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is mainly set in California, USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonist is Sheriff Jenna Alton. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
'Don't Look Back' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book D.K Hood discusses/includes domestic abuse and graphic scenes.
OMG!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVED THIS BOOK!!! D.K HOOD you just keep getting better and better!!! Clear your schedules before picking this up as you will not be able to put it down!!
This book is fantastically written and had me hooked from the first page until the last. DK Hood way of writing is perfectly evocative and she has such a creative imagination!! The descriptions were so vivid and realistic I felt my heart racing and the hair on my arms stand on end. I have absolutely loved getting to know Jenna and akane in 'Cross My Heart' and 'Fallen Angel' so to be able to read Jenna's origin story was amazing. In the two books I have read the reader knows snippets of what went on in Jenna's past and more than enough to know something serious happened and there was a tragedy, I won't say more as I don't want to spoil it for future readers. Although I have just read the two books and they have always given the details needed I have always been intrigued about exactly what happened so was absolutely landed when I found out this origin book was being published and it definitely did not disappoint!! I loved getting to know who Jenna was before her life changed and watching her grow and change so much in such a short time. This book reinforces the fact that Jenna is a kick *** female lead who went through hell but instead of hiding in the shadows uses her past to be a voice for other victims. D.K Hood covers domestic abuse in this book and she has done an absolutely fantastic job. I am proud to see more and more crime fiction that brings domestic abuse to life. It comes in so many ways and forms that some poor victims, men and women alike, don't even realise that it is abuse they are going through. Hopefully with DK Hood's help if you are a victim of abuse you will find the courage to speak out whether to Victim Support, a friend, a neighbour or just a stranger, it may save your life. Needless to say I absolutely LOVED the storyline which worked perfectly well with what I have seen of Jenna in later books. This book is absolutely perfect for any crime lovers whether this is your first Kane and Alton book or whether you have read them all. I can assure you will love it! The way DK Hood links the present and past works perfectly and everything is explained with no loose ends which is a huge bug bear for me. The storyline is packed with tension, suspense, books, gangs, brutality, the cartel , murder, tension and filled with twists and turns. I was absolutely shocked when everything was revealed and was not expecting it at all!!! A HUGE congratulations to D.K Hood, it is getting harder and harder to shock me but you did it well!!! I also enjoyed the fact that everything was explained at the end as I hate loose ends and when something is mentioned or happens in a book and then is forgotten about. D.K Hood has obviously done her research on police procedurals which is yet another bonus as I've read many crime novels where the authors make massive mistakes due to not doing enough research. This is an absolutely unputdownable page turner and I cannot wait to read the previous and future books in what is promising to be an addictive series.
Although this is the origin book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without or with the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I absolutely LOVED meeting Jenna again and they are all realistic and I became completely invested in them. I love that Jenna is such a strong female lead that has history and has been through so much but doesn't cower and stands strong. I loved that this book was all about her and what she went through as it definitely deserved its own book!!!
Congratulations D.K Hood on what yet another huge success!!! Very rarely an authors books get better but you have certainly mastered it!!! I cannot wait to get stuck into more of your books. This is exactly why you are in my favourite authour list!!
This series is definitely in my top 5 and considering I've read 100's this is a HUGE achievement!!! Congratulations DK Hood and here is to your next success 🥂
Overall an absolutely addictive, heart racing and unputdownable crime thriller that takes you back to Jenna's beginning and will keep you up all night.
Genres covered in this novel include Police Procedural, Suspense, Mystery, Thriller, Noir Fiction and Crime Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh, Angela Marsons, Carol Wyer, Kendra Elliot, anyone who has or hasn't read any of the Kane and Alton books and anyone looking for a gripping page turner .
150 pages.
This book is just £2.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.
Feel free to add me on Goodreads or follow me on my website or Facebook for more reviews
This book was just the backstory I didn’t know I was missing out on until I read it. I love Jenna and although I was intrigued about her history, it was always a secret, locked away in a classified file until one morning she decides to tell Kane.
I loved getting to know Jenna before Jenna. Man, it was not easy and what she went through was tough to read. How she is cut off from everyone and the pain she suffered. However, the threat over her head is very real.
This novella helps us see Jenna in a fuller light. We know where she has come from, so although her behaviour towards Kane really peeved me in Fallen Angel, I can relate now to why she’s like that.
It was also interesting to read her initial thoughts of Black Rock Falls and her new home at the Ranch. The first case as acting Sheriff hit her in an instant and it got personal quick. All this lead up to when she met Kane and it made me love Rowley all over again. It was fascinating. I will say it time and time again, Jenna needs a proper break!! Some sun, a drink and just the sounds of the sea.
I devoured this book in 2 sittings because like always Ms Hood writing just has me hooked. Plus when you see older names come up, knowing what you do now, well you just want to scream. One from excitement and one to get Jenna out of there!!
I can’t wait to go and read Kane’s back story (yes I am behind) and I think a story of Wolfe would just finish it off!
This is one of my favourite series and it was great to find out how Jenna ended up in Black Rock Falls. Her last case before becoming Sherriff was demanding and her life was in danger every day. Trying to find out information on a drug cartel whilst working under cover is never easy, but being married to one of them makes it hard to escape. Jenna was beaten and saw some horrific sights and now will never stand by if a woman or man is being abused by their partner. It was great to read about her first few weeks in Boavk Rock Falls and see how it all came about and meeting the people I’ve come to love hearing about for the first time. A great back story which shows what a strong woman Jenna is. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Omg I just love love love DK Hood I can't help but get so entangled in these characters. We have been told Kanes back story and only snippets of Jennas.
Don't look back is Jenna's story. After years away from the FBI DEA, Jenna has been hiding in plane sight in black rock falls. Even with extensive plastic surgery, name change and completely knew way of life Jenna is still terrified of her old life catching up with her. Kane asks Jenna to tell him what her mission was and why she is in black rock falls. So begins the story of how she infiltrated the one of rhe biggest drug cartels in the country and found out more than she bargained for.
This was hands down one of my favourite in this series, although I think I've said that about every book thus far so maybe I just love them all. It was really good to find out why Jenna is so security conscious and why she needed to be put in witness protection. I enjoyed reading her marriage to Michael and its strange because it felt like reading a completely different woman which I know was the point she's under cover but she is so docile and compliant not the Jenna we know and love. But when we discover with Jenna what she undercover there is no doubt that the cartel would kill her given a chance and moving to black rock falls makes sense.
I also love that we get to follow her with her first real case in black rocks and how she really gets into the town spirit and how she is loved early up in her arrival. Hood also manages to incorporate some of the back stories of some of black rock falls local serial killer's within Jennas story setting the scene for those creepy characters.
Honestly I highly recommend but there's no surprise there. As this is a prequel you can start with books 1 to 14 first and give this a read once it's released or the other way round. But honestly I think it comes ro play perfectly at this point in Jennas story. 5 EASY STARS
thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture and DK Hood for an ARC of Don't look back in exchange for my fair and honest opinions.
"This story is for those who have been hurt, trampled, bullied, battered, or used and have had the courage to move forward--I salute you." (D. K. Hood)
"Don't Look Back" is the prequel to "The Detectives Kane and Alton Series" by D. K. Hood. It's the short story that fills the readers in on the background of Jenna Alton before she became the Sheriff of Black Rock Falls, Montana.
I have not read the series, but this was exactly what a prequel should be. It was short and to the point. The writing was excellent and very enjoyable to read. I can see why this series is so popular. Just the peek I got from the prequel was perfectly executed and very interesting to read. I look forward to reading more about Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this excellent e-book. I really appreciate the honor of reading it! "Don't Look Back" will be published February 8, 2022.
Don't Look Back by D.K. Hood is a prequel to the Detectives Kane and Alton series, and deals with Jenna's backstory. Kane already had his prequel entitled "Lose Your Breath".
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) DEA Agent Avril Parker (who later becomes Sheriff Jenna Alton) has been undercover for four years. As part of her mission, she married Michael Carlos. He and his father, Viktor, have been running a drug cartel, and she finally has proof.
It means that she can finally escape the abusive marriage that she has been in. Now the problem will be to get out alive...and taking a little girl with her.
But even if she gets out alive, her life will be forfeit, because the arms of the cartel are long.
My Opinions: First, I have no idea why this is being touted as #14.5 in the series...in some circles. #14 published a month after this one. As a prequel, it should really be .5. It does, however, touch on Jenna's relationship with Kane, so I would really read this later in the series....assuming you are still reading these books at all. (I have often wanted to throw in the proverbial towel.) Anyway, I am going with .5
Anyway, as in Dave Kane's prequel, this one was a lot better than I had anticipated. Although I have had problems with her occasional lack of self-confidence, and the fact that she often bows to Kane's command, in this book she earned her stripes! Now if she would only continue this behaviour!
I found it interesting as to how fast she ended up being sheriff, and found that speed to be a little far-fetched. However, I liked how she met Rowley and Atohi.
This was a short book, and a very captivating read. The pace was fast (a little too fast at times).

I’ve read the entire series & I’d describe them usually as easy read crime fiction, fast paced, entertaining etc and an enjoyable lightweight read.
However, this one felt wrong. It had so much potential but felt horribly rushed, with careless errors.
Chapter 4 - Mai describes being on a stinky fishing boat with her parents & sister - then her father disappears with some men, her mother also has vanished, then she’s separated from her sister.
Chapter 9 - Mai’s diplomat father had reported her missing from school, ( no mention of the missing mother, sister, stinky boat lol)….. what????
Considering the short sentences & chapters, this really was a glaring error which annoyed me. It’s insulting to the reader who’s purchased the book when the author / editor/ proof reader misses something so obvious.
Then we get to Avril/Jenna - as Jenna in the entire series, she has a reputation for her honesty, truthfulness etc - we discover that actually she stole $10million dollars whilst an undercover DEA agent knowing full well her husband’s money came from crime! I can’t quite get my head round that. Her ranch, her security, her life style through the entire series actually comes from crime profits - obviously not reported to the DEA lol - and she’s happy to live of it. That doesn’t fit with the Jenna she’s portrayed as throughout the series.
More? Well there’s blink - and she’s a deputy, blink again, acting sheriff, blink again sheriff, blink again attempted murder . I know the books are generally fast paced but really?
This would have been better as either 2 novellas - Avril’s past & then Jenna’s start as sheriff, or a 2part book perhaps.
This was an accidental 3 star, meant to be 2 & I only gave that as generally I’ve enjoyed the series.
Something in the past has always stopped me from liking Jenna Alton 100% unlike Kane. Yes she's an admirable woman of substance & the the Sheriff but I couldn't get myself to like her without question. This changed with this book! An insight into how Jenna became Jenna is something I was waiting for especially since reading the last book about David Kane. The book delves well into the past to give the reader a full background on Jenna's character. It was interesting to see familiar characters in the series crop up especially since a a one of them is now dead! That was chilling to read about! Even though this was a . 5 book it was brilliant!
Thank you Netgalley, Bookouture & D. K. Hood for this arc!
(4.5) Thoroughly enjoyed getting to see how Jenna came to Black Rock Falls. I love this series and it has some of the creepiest criminals hiding in plain sight so to speak, looking like your neighbor. To see how Jenna came to be fit in 100% of Book 1, with the acting sheriff, the fireman, the mayor, it all connected. What she endured beforehand was, well like Kane said. I can't believe you did that, lived that and the DEA approved it. Another fact of sacrifice one for a group. Her hesitation when it came time to decide on her future. She did it, she was there, she helped take them down, and now you want to remove her existence. Well done. And Rowley, yes we meet Rowley for the first time and certainly turned my thoughts around there. Anyone else want to yell *hold on, you will have a fantastic medical examiner soon *, or something to that effect? I am soooo looking forward to Pray For Mercy. We now have the back ground for both Kane and Jenna, we can move forward and strengthen their relationship as they deal with psycho after psycho. Thank you for the arc, I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
Love this author and have enjoyed every single one of her amazing books. And this one is just wow. Loved it from start to finish. Thrilling. Pacy. Just wonderful.
I love this series. Ex DEA agent goes to small town Montana. Groups with an Ex assassin from military. This book however was only 142 pages long which is fine but I would not want to pay big bucks for it.
Kane & Alton is one of my all time favourite series so I was so pleased to see the short stories of the background of Kane and Jenna (I read Kane's previously).
Delving into the passed history of Jenna makes you appreciate her character even more when you realise the trauma and sacrifices that she has been though/made and it helps to fit the pieces together of her complex nature everything just makes more sense.
These short stories really compliment the series well and they are a must read for Hood fans.
Have you ever felt that you wanted to see the origins of a character? To see the psychology behind why the person behaves as they do?
This is the perfect chance for you to do it with a wonderful prequel on the best selling Alton and Kane series. The past of Jenna Alton is here and boy is it amazing.
This book was truly breathtaking with a lot of nuances of Jenna and her past. It went along way to make Jenna feel more human to me. I have at times found her to be over rigid and very direct. Not that it's a bad thing but now you see the softer side of Jenna who is caring.
I was impressed with the writing in this book as it shows a huge shift for what I was expecting. Knowing Jenna was DEA I always kind of figured her as very harsh and no nonsense. She always seemed to have very harsh moments but this showed me the caring loving lady who has attracted one of my favourite characters Dave Kane.
It was great to see a backstory I was expecting more with her DEA life but I really enjoyed seeing her time when she first came to Black Rock Falls.
The kid angle that was in the start of the book had me cringing at times but I got a big amount of pleasure seeing those evil cartel people get what was coming to them.
Jenna with this book has pushed up her ranking in my favourite characters. She has such talent and such drive and this book showed her grace as well as a human being. I honestly want so many more of these stories but would love to really see her more in the DEA Role.
What a spectacular addition to this wonderful story as well as a wonderful way to really introduce yourself to what this lady was like and who she was before a Sherriff.
Don't Look Back by D.K.Hood is part of the Detectives Kane and Alton series and is the origin story for how Sheriff Jenna Alton came into existence and made her way to Black Rock Falls. The storyline is a thrilling one full of action and suspense. This story was a wonderful window into what Jenna is made of. I greatly admire this character. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Hands down my favourite book of this amazing, incredible series. One thing I will say. Read the books in order of publication. This is Jenna’s backstory but you don’t want to read it first. In this book we learn how and why Jenna came to Black Rock Falls. I stayed up past my bedtime to finish it because I could not put it down. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.
My heart was pounding, my nerves were shredded but OMG was it worth it.
As this story is spectacular and unputdownable. And really highlights what an incredible series and kick-ass character Jenna Alton is.
And for me, it's a must read, as not only do you learn about the harrowing details of Jenna's time undercover, but the aftermath, how she ends up in Black Rock Falls and her first investigation as acting sheriff.
Would definitely recommend.
**I was kindly provided with an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**
Finally, the book that answers all those questions you've had throughout the series. I only discovered this author recently so it was great to read this prequel before getting stuck into her back catalogue. It's a really good read. I was on the edge of my seat as DEA agent Avril Parker crept around the estate searching for the evidence that is needed to bring down the Carlos family and their murderous regime.. The tension in this story will have you .biting your nails to the quick and preparing for a sleepless night because you won't be able to put this book down..
I fell into this series just a few months ago so I really have to read the rest of the early books. I have enjoyed the short novellas explaining the back stories of both Kane and now Jenna. Don’t Look Back explains how Avril Parker morphed into Jenna Alton. Jenna has nerves of steel. I loved how she slid into a small Montana town and took charge. I can’t wait to catch up with the other books in the series and look forward to more Kane Alton stories. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the advance read.
Fabulous prequel about how Jenna Alton came to be. It’s quick but gives you some great depth on how great a character she is. I highly recommend this series about this dynamic duo… Kane and Alton. Five stars.
Absolutely loved this, couldn’t put it down, so much so, I was finishing it at midnight on a work night. Even if I wasn’t a huge fan of the Kane and Alton series I’d have loved this, the prequel to Jenna’s story and how she came to be in Black Rock Falls. A tense read that grabs you from the off
Great insight into who Jenna Alton is and how she got to be Sheriff of Black Rock Falls! A quick read which is quite fascinating! I feel as if I’ve been allowed behind the veil of Jenna’s past. Fans of the Kane & Alton series will love this book!
This is a series and I did not realize that. I wish I would have had the chance to read the first few books so I would have honestly understood who each of these characters were. The main two characters that is. Kane and Jenna. Both are with the police. One a special opps and the other a sheriff.
This story starts out with Jenna telling Kane who she was. What went on in her past. What she went through while undercover. Being married to the son of the head of the Cartel. Taking beatings when she certainly could have fought back and hurt the man. What her life was like before. Before she had to give up her life and go into witness protection.
This book definitely has the potential to be great. It was very much edge of your seat for the first half and the last part. The between parts kind of let me down but it was still good. It would have been way better if I had read the whole series though. I would have know how Jenna came to be undercover. Married Michael Carlos. Gone through so much. It would have explained the nightmare at the beginning. The prologue. That part pulled me in so completely then I was left wondering what happened. But it was still a good story.
This story deals with a lot of things from drug running to children being sold for sex. A family who can destroy you in a second and never blink an eye. A woman who managed to infiltrate them and come out alive. Who went on to have a life. To help others. It's an edge of your seat thriller in so many places.
Thank you #NetGalley, #DKHood, #Bookouture for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.
3.5 out of 5 stars for me. I recommend you read some of the previous books so you know exactly what is going on. It's still good and I believe you will enjoy this one. It did fall a bit short for me because I needed more info about some things. Still it was good.
