A collection of real-life stories of a hundred inspiring Black women collated by four Black women authors, edited by a Black woman, and illustrated by more than sixty Black female/non-binary illustrators. That’s Black Magic alright!
This book contains some known names and many unknown names from quite a few countries. I was happy to see that range of countries and the diverse fields of achievement included in the content. The format is the same as in the earlier books: a single page write-up about a woman achiever written in story format, accompanied by an illustration of that woman on the right hand side. The language is moderately difficult, and will be manageable for independent readers aged 7+. As far as I could make out, there are no repeats from the earlier Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls books except for Kamala Harris. What I also admired was that the book covers not just cis women but also trans women. This makes this edition a treasure trove of inspiring ladies and completely worthy of purchase.
The book proves that you are not limited by when you are born, where you are born, or whom you are born to. Your only limit is set by you yourself.
A few of the illustrations disappointed me this time. They depicted the lady as either fairer or thinner than in real life. Docking 0.25 stars for this.
That’s a very minor issue in comparison with the stunning impact such books can create on little minds and their guardians. Such books are a must for every house, school, and library.

Thank you, NetGalley and Rebel Girls, for the ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

A life-changing and powerful read, not only for the young and the teens, but for everyone.

You can go for this book blindly. One page description, another page with colourful portraits of the amazing women.

Need more? Just go read the other books in the rebel girls book series!

Thoroughly impressed!

Thank you, publisher and the artists/authors and the team, for the advance reading copy.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 real- life tales of black girl magic is a beautifully illustrated tribute to 100 amazing black women accompanied by a beautiful tribute and short but detailed page describing who they are and what they've don't to make a difference to the lives of people of colour. This book is an amazing book to share with all children no matter what race they are and is a great inspirational book for children to go to sleep after reading about. This shows girls especially that girls can aspire to do and become whatever they want to be and encourages them to reach for their dreams.

How I read this: Free ebook copy received through NetGalley

Both this book, and the idea for this book are GREAT! What's not to love?
- created by Black women (or non-binary)
- art by Black women (or non-binary)
- celebrates NOT JUST AMERICANS (that's a big one for me!!)

They're very inspiring. Loved the illustrations. Loved the stories.

My favorite stories were about Angela Dorothea Ferguson and Barbara Hillary. Ferguson discovered that many Black children suffered from sickle cell anemia and started figuring out how to help. And Hillary is just wow! At age 75, she reached the North Pole, and at 80, the South Pole!!! What??!! Amazing!!!

And let's not forget, at the end of the book there are some activities for the reader to include themselves in the book, get inspired and grow. It's a really good book for teens and kids, I absolutely loved it.

I thank the publisher for giving me a free copy of the ebook in exchange to my honest review. This has not affected my opinion.

Book 273 of 2021

Many thanks to Rebel Girls for inviting me to read a digital ARC of this book via Netgalley! I’m a fan of biography vignettes like this one that showcases women being amazing in whatever they choose to do! When I saw that this one was themed “Black Girl Magic”, I knew I just had to read it ASAP! I read it in one sitting and I fell head over heels in one.

This book shone in so many ways, like-
The foreword: I love that when they decided to do a Black Girl Magic themed edition, they acknowledged the creator of the term, CaShawn A Thompson, and invited her to write a heartwarming foreword.

The diversity/inclusivity: This is a list of black women, but even within that frame, this list is very diverse! They didn’t just feature black women from the Western world/ Global North, but they included black women from so many parts of the world, and of various heritages. There are African women, Afro-Latinx women, black Asian women, and so many more. They also included trans women in the list of 100 and that warmed my heart so much!

The illustrations and illustrators: The illustrations in this book were drawn by women and nonbinary people from various parts of the world, including Nigeria! The illustrations vary in style and give the book just a vibrant feel.

The writing: Apart from the illustration in each entry, the writing is also very worthy of applause. In a limited number of words, they were able to encapsulate a lot of the women’s lives and write it in a way that’s empowering to young readers.

After reading the list of 100+ women, I was wondering where some iconic black women were, and why they were left out of this list, but at the end of the list of 100, there is a section that features black women featured in other Rebel Girls series and I found that so cool! There is also a section at the end for readers to write about themselves and that’s really great.

This is such an amazing book that I will recommend a million times over.

There is no end to the fabulousness that the "Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls" movement has created. Each time they surpass the last with the gorgeous images, great design and ability to encapsulate the life of someone in just one page.

This book (and series) is such a great starting point for my students when they're looking at biographies, as they can quickly understand the role someone has played and then later read a more in depth biography once they've oriented themselves on the person.

This is a beautiful compilation of stories about women of color from all walks of life, in varying age groups and different fields of work including a Mathematician, a Poet, Artists, Activists and even an Aerialist from Poland.

The layout of each page is visually appealing with stunning illustrations and a biographical sketch of each of the 100 Black girls featured. Its a great way for a reader to learn about their struggles and triumph and to draw inspiration from their journeys.

Best of all, there are blank pages at the end which gives the reader an opportunity to create their own stories. This book is a work of art in itself and should be cherished for years to come.

Many thanks to the publisher and to Net Galley for an Advanced Reader Copy. All reviews are my own.

Another wonderful addition in the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series. These are the kinds of heroes our children should learn about. There are so many inspirational stories here. I wasn't aware of quite a few and got to learn a lot.

A wonderful collection!

**Thank you to NetGalley and Rebel Girls Publishing for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. This in no way changed my thoughts**

I have seen these books around since I was a bookseller and I'm glad to see the series has continued. I saw this one in the Apple book store a few weeks ago and went to request it at my library only to see it on NetGalley as a read now, so I immediately jumped at the chance to read a book that highlights the greatness of Black women in society. I was not disappointed!

Each story is written in a fairy tale-esque manner ("Once, there was a girl who...") that makes the story engaging for children. The story is told in a short way, each one the length of a page, and highlights who the woman is, where she came from, and why they are someone to look up to. The range of people included in this anthology is staggeringly vast! The authors included women from all walks of life, all kinds of fields of interest from sports to science to the arts, women from today and spanning back to 1583 (!!), Afrolatinx women, Biracial Black women, Black women from many different countries (I was very pleased to find they weren't all women from the US), women who are disabled, and women who are LGBTQIA+. There were stories to represent so many different types of people.

I also liked that the authors specified at the beginning of the book that the book is still for children who are not Black necessarily. It's important for Black children to see themselves represented, but it's equally important that non-Black children see and relate to BIPOC people. BIPOC children have done this for years out of scarcity of representation and unfortunately, I have met many adults and educators who believe that if the protagonist doesn't look like you, it isn't "for" you. That mentality has to go, so good on the authors for addressing that and making sure the importance for ALL audiences is made clear.

The book can be read in a short amount of time because of the brevity of the material, but it could be reread and enjoyed multiple times. This could be a good jumping off point to learn more about each of these women in-depth, as well. The only story that made me feel "off" was that it's mentioned that Beverly Lorraine Greene started her career designing a building that specifically discriminated against Black tenants, so she "wasn't sure they'd want a Black architect"...that felt like a weird thing to highlight. Otherwise, the stories were well written and I enjoyed this title very much. The artwork was stunning and varied, giving many artists a chance to have their work seen and the material is presented in an engaging way that will make kids want to pull this out again and again.

Good Night Stories For Rebel Girls 100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
TW: Racial abuse and racial stereotypes

Overall:
✨Rebel Girls have offered a brilliant introduction to so many powerful and influential black women. This book is ideal for young girl everywhere in need of inspiration and strength. With beautiful illustrations and positivity flowing from the pages, this book is the perfect guide to black excellence and young feminism. The only downside is the shortness of the text don't truly match the idea of a good night story with one page per person. Also, some of them do feel repetitive in format so I had to take regular breaks in order to stay entertained by the stories provided. But overall, this book offers a beautiful educational in the strong women who came before us.

This is the fourth title in the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series and it is my favourite title to date.

It’s all well and good being told that you can be anything that you want to be but there’s nothing better than seeing people like you and reading about what they have achieved and knowing that through hard-work, dedication and determination you can do it too. Children need relatable, real and inspiring role-models and this is exactly what Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic delivers.

Featuring one-hundred Black women from history right through to the present day and bursting with #BlackGirlMagic, this is the most brilliant celebration of Black women and their achievements. Bang-up-to-date, the superbly collated collection of figures provides a great breadth of coverage. With the well-known names of Naomi Osaka and Kamala Harris, the lesser-known names of Yetnebersh Niguisse and Leah Chase, and the the inclusion of Black women who were born post-2000 - Kheris Rogers, MC Soffia and Nandi Bushell, there is at least one Black women for every reader to relate to and be inspired by. Diverse and inclusive, the featured Black women come from around the world, although most are from the USA, and established themselves and succeeded in a wide range of fields, it is almost an A to Z of endeavours from actors, artists, authors and activists through to veterinarians, vice-presidents, wrestlers and yoga teachers.

Arranged in alphabetical order, women are introduced over double page spreads featuring a full page biography and a vibrant illustration on the facing page. Each biography gives a snapshot of the individual, detailing childhood, growing-up, accomplishments, achievements and legacy. They are a lovely introduction to each of the women and many will leave readers wanting to find out more.

What I love most about this book is that it has been created exclusively by Black people. Four Black women wrote the biographies, the illustrations are the work of over sixty Black female or non-binary artists and the Black woman who coined the phrase ‘Black Girls Are Magic’ was responsible for hand-picking the one-hundred women who feature. All of this #BlackGirlPower does not mean this book is exclusively for Black children. It is a book for all children (and adults) who want to read incredible stories about amazing women who broke down barriers, tore up ‘the rule book’ and have paved or are paving the the way for future generations.

Beautifully presented, lovingly researched and packed full of #BlackGirlMagic, this is a fantastic celebration of Black women. Superbly informative, motivational and inspirational, the stories are testament to what is possible when you dare to dream, are not willing to accept anything other than the best and are determined to get exactly what you want in life.

Recommended for 8+.

Part of me wishes I had a daughter/niece who I could share these books with as each one they release are amazing and it gives the children role models from all walks and areas of life and shows girls that no matter what happens you can achieve anything and that it's a good thing that girls can have both beauty and brains and more often our world is always highly shadowed by males who achieve greatness rather than the females. We are also coming into a new generation where women of color who were often shunned or placed in the background are also being acknowledged along with their white female counterparts which I love as that is the way it should be, it should never be about the color of their skin but what they have achieved. Black Girl Magic is laid out in the same format as the other books in this series where each tale is given a double spread of one page per story and a full-color picture of the person. The other thing I loved about this book and the others is that they feature not only famous ones that we all know of like Toni Morrison and Aretha Franklin but also unknowns like Marsai Martin and Shirley Chisholm. The other thing I enjoy is that the book is also a mixture of older black women we know of like Katherine Johnson and Serena/Venus Williams but also newcomers onto the scene like VP Kamala Harris and Poet Amanda Gorman who delivered Joe Biden's inauguration with a poem. This series is perfect for girls of all ages especially those between 9-15 years and also grab it now if you need a last-minute Christmas present or a birthday gift.

This is the second book in the Rebel Girls series that I’ve read and I absolutely loved both of them. This book in particular celebrates 100 strong Black women and girls all around world and of all different ages (I loved that Nandi Bushell was included!).

Probably what I love most about this series is how inclusive it is. The women included in this book are celebrated across all fields - we have the women in STEM fields, but also artists, poets and activists. And I love that they are all included and celebrated in this series. The LGBTQ+ representation is excellent as well! Most of the women featured in this book are not ones we learned about in school, so I loved reading all of their stories.

Additionally, the illustrations in this book are colorful and beautiful. I appreciate the different art styles and how each illustration is by a woman. The section at the end with a glossary of important terms and activities was also great.

This book is inspiring and powerful, but also very informative and a welcome addition to any Rebel Girl’s library. I will definitely recommend this book to all of my friends with kiddos. Truly a celebration of Black Girl Magic and I enjoyed every second of it.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book.

I'm a huge fan of the Rebel Girls Books. I love giving them as gifts to girls in my life, as well as reading them myself. Despite being a single page, the stories give just enough information to enlighten and inspire without becoming overwhelming and are a great inspiration for further research or discussion. As always, each fascinating, inspiring story in Good Night Stories for Rebel Girl is accompanied by a stunning illustration. In this case, all the portraits were created by Black and/or non-binary artists. I always come away from every book in the Rebel Girls series with a list of new heroines, and Good Night Stories is no different. Whether they are women I was familiar with, like Kamala Harris, Joy Reid and Nandi Bushell, to those who were new to me, such and Thokozile Muwamba, Roxanne Shante, and the entire village of Umoja, these women and their stories will stay with me for a long time to come.

I am so very grateful to NetGalley and Rebel Girls for the opportunity to read and review Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls -- as well as all the Rebel Girls books! I'm looking forward to the next one.

This book was truly amazing to read, with all the inspirational stories of strong, powerful black girls and women!
This is the second "Good Night Stories for rebel girls" and I always feel so enchanted with all the beautiful illustrations, inspiring stories, this book should be distributed to every girl and also boy around the world!
The only critic I have is that I felt that were too many North American black girls, and I was expecting it to be more diverse, but at the same time, I do question myself if this was the result of the editor's selection or because the girls that live in countries like The USA have more opportunities and thus they stories spread easier?

Thanks to Rebel Girls for inviting me to read and review an e-copy of this book via Net Galley.

Having read other books in the Rebel Girls series, I had an idea of what to expect and wasn't disappointed. 100 mini-biographies of black women who have achieved amazing things throughout their lives and across the years. From authors, sportswomen and musicians through engineers, surgeons and mathematicians, there is sure to be a story here to inspire everyone. The book is up to date, including the inauguration poet, Amanda Gorman, and vice-president Kamala Harris.

A great addition to any school library.

What an incredible collection of amazing women and showcase of black girl magic. This book features 100 black girls and women (including trans women) who made a difference. Some are big names that most people know but many are lesser known, and I like that this book didn't just pick already famous people. It includes modern-day heroes as well. I like that this book is inclusive of trans and biracial women, and doesn't exclusively feature people from the US/UK. I also liked that almost each illustration was done by a different black illustrator. Overall a great and important book and perfect for libraries across the country!

A gorgeously illustrated collection that centers Black women not only as the protagonists, but as the authors and illustrators.

From scientists and social activists to athletes and artists, this collection introduced me to many women I did not yet have the privilege of knowing, while also expanding upon legendary women such as Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Naomi Osaka.

I also appreciated this books’ child-friendly approach to important societal issues such as racism, discrimination, sexism, and transphobia.

If you’re expecting long biographies, this is not the book for you! But as a book geared toward children, this collection is magical. Because Black girls are magic.

This is my favorite book so far! get ready to be inspired by women such as the wonderful Toni Morisson, Octavia E. Butler, Kamala Harris, and Issa Rae. What made me so happy was seeing Chido Govera a mushroom farmer from Zimbabwe. I especially loved that the book included a lot of black women from around the world including African women. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls never ceases to amaze me. Every volume is filled with inspirational stories from women who worked hard to achieve their dreams. This volume is dedicated to POC women from all walks of life. The book dedicates each of them a page to share their story and a beautiful illustration to match it. It was interesting to hear from doctors to poets to models. It was a nice surprise to see Dominique Jackson in here as well, I loved her as Elektra in Pose. And I love that the foreword is actually written by the person who coined the term “Black Girl Magic”.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Absolutely fantastic!! A joy of a read honestly, with lovely artwork of each woman.

The book focuses on a range of women: historical and recent, a mixture of backgrounds, religions, large and small scale impacts, and those who were old, young and middle aged when they achieved success.

Each story is a snapshot of one page, but it’s still rich enough to be satisfying. And there’s always Google for those you want to know even more about. I’d say a good 85% I hadn’t known about beforehand—although many I had been impacted by without realising.

It’s also a very nice touch that most stories start with “Once upon a time” or their introductions are written as a fairy tale would be. I can imagine care givers reading this to children while they lie in bed, exactly as intended; it’s a lovely way to recognise and celebrate Black excellence, as well as showing that things are still not as they should be, that we’re still having to work for equal opportunity and unity.

Also I really liked the activity section in the back, thought that was a nice touch.

My daughter and I love reading everything Rebel Girls! Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic was another great read for our family. We love the format of biography and illustration with it. This collection has a wide range of women and illustrators from different countries. We loved the inclusion of gender/binary differences as well. My child is in third grade and this was a great read for her with some new words sprinkled throughout.

Thanks to Netgalley and Rebel Girls for the ARC of this in exchange for my honest review.

As always, the Rebel Girls team did a great job with this anthology. There was a diverse group of women featured, the illustrations were lovely, and the stories were a just right length and difficulty level for the elementary school crowd. I knew who a few of the women were, but was pleased by the maybe lesser known stories that give me a jumping block for who else to look into.

The Rebel Girls series is enjoyable to read and very visually appealing. It's great to read about historical figures from all over the world and throughout history, from Hatshepsut to Harriet Tubman. I love that Anna Politkovskaya was included--she was truly a hero ahead of her time.

This book was a warm hug, like all of the ones in this series. The inspiring stories told to inspire young black girls all over the world were amazing! These women were fascinating, and I’m glad they chose to write an installment about them. The illustrations were impeccable, as always.

Totally recommend picking this one up, even if you don’t have kids!
