Cut Back is the fifth book in a series that began with Stake Night and continued with Show Time, Victory Pass, and Leg Up. You should read those books first to become familiar with the horse and human characters, many of whom reappear as they continue their quests to win the most coveted prize in the American Saddlebred show horse industry, a World Championship.Cut Back takes place immediately after the end of Leg Up, in which the highest performing and most prolific American Saddlebred stallion has been secretly diagnosed with a disease that is suspected to be genetic. His owner struggles to understand her obligation to disclose the diagnosis while show season is still underway. We also continue to follow the career of a young and talented rider, who struggles to afford a nice horse that she trains herself. In this book, she becomes an assistant trainer in one of the best barns in the industry and struggles to learn all she must about training horses and coaching amateur riders. And in an interesting turn of events, Johnnie Stuart returns to Kentucky. After previously earning a lifetime ban for trampling a ring steward when he was disqualified in the gaited stake, Johnnie finds a way to challenge the ban, and vows he will make the industry pay for depriving him of the spotlight for more than six years. In Cut Back, a new generation of show horses emerges, bringing their owners, riders, and trainers a roller coaster year of disappointments and triumphs.
This book, like the rest in the series, makes you feel that you’re there with the characters. I hope a 6th book ( I think the title should be, Show Barn ) is in the making, I feel like it left us all wondering what’s next !
This whole series has a good story and interesting characters. However, there are some serious problems that good editing would fix. Word tense congruence should be a basic fix but too many times this has not been addressed. Switching from 1st to 3rd person narrative perspective is jarring to the reader. The author frequently treats each chapter as a new story and repeats background information each chapter. She has a very distinct method of telling a story without showing it. Worst flaw of all is that if you read the whole story there are massive contradictions.
In book4 she says that the main antagonist was involved in several legal proceedings before starting his suspension. In book 5 the main conflict revolves around no legal proceedings before the suspension. This isn’t the only contradiction but it is the most evident.
I was so happy to see that a 5th book was added to one if my favourite series. Reading about the characters is like getting back in touch with a good friend you haven't seen in a while! The writing\story was a little more choppy than in the previous books, but it was still a five star read. I hope book number 6 comes out soon:)
Loved it! There were a few spots that had me sniffling, but definitely continued a fantastic story! I've never really been around gaited horses much but the author has really made the thought intriguing! Great story, good writing, and horses! What more can you ask for?
As soon as I saw that there was Book 5 available in the Stake Night series, I downloaded it immediately. I loved the continuation of the story revolving around the cast of people and horses we know from earlier books, and the introduction of new horses!
