They're Still Here...
They've Been Waiting for You...

MALEVOLENT NEVERS by Tom Rimer

No spoilers. 4 1/2 stars. This is a good story for Halloween night...

Abel Ward (Abe) has just received a call in the middle of the night. His Aunt Elma Ward is dying, and she wants Abe to be there...

... Abe's her closest relative, and she raised him...

Abel is dragging along his teenage son Simeon (Simi) in an attempt to atone for being a neglectful father...

Simi is not happy about it one bit...

Father and son got into Abe's old truck and barreled toward something Abe had been running from most of his life...

It was complicated...

Abe was going home to bury his aunt Elma and discuss her final wishes, but Abe didn't want to play any of her games...

No more fairy tales. He'd left all of that behind...

When Abe went in to see the old woman, she sang him a song:

From the depths of me 'art
To the pit of me soul
With ne'er a breath nor need for a hole
O' malevolent nevers.

Here they wait for our evers
Our demons to bear
Sometimes they be starin' through yer window in the dead of night
O' malevolent nevers

Then Elma said: They want me Abel, and they've been waiting a long time. When I die, you must give my body to them within six days after my death...

It's complicated, but... they're still here...

This was an excellent horror story with a little coming-of-age added. There were some genuinely eerie parts.

This novel would have benefited from some good proofreading to catch some of the misused words and doubling up on some words but I didn't deduct anything from my rating for it because I believe it is the publisher's job to clean the story up. I did, however, remove 1/2 star for a loose end.

Overall, it's a great horror story!

Malevolent Nevers packs a serious punch, cracked jaw, fractured skull, split orbital bone, bruised, battered, and beaten. The story feels like an old friend, an old friend who likes to live life on the edge, a friend that you can never tell if they want to help or hinder…a friend that has you walking across glass. A sense of familiarity, this is the kind of book you want to curl up with in front of a roaring fire and a nip of whisky. Pick up this book for its kick-ass cover and stay for the characterisation and penetrating gothic atmosphere.

Malevolent Nevers starts from the ground up. You feel the foreboding, the undertones, the impending shadows are never too far away. If my brain was installed with a red alert system, then it would be screaming at me by this point. You get a sense of the author’s style, he wants to walk you down a tight rope of fear, and he paints a parallel. This world and the other one. It’s a world you don’t want to walk to, a world we wouldn’t want to claim exists, a world that can paint all your nightmares onto a blank canvas…seeing it makes it all so much worse.

Tom Rimer has the exquisite skill of transporting you into the abyss of his storyline. Nothing is as it seems, no it is far, far worse! He has created something so deliciously dark and took me on a journey that would not only test my emotions but my resolve not to yell at the protagonist, Abe. Just how can a man be that blind, Jeez!

Malevolent Nevers feels like life and death…if I stop reading will something catastrophic happen? Make sure all your chores are done because you won’t be moving anywhere until it’s finished.

Imagine being Abe Ward, he’s finally trying to reconnect with his teenage son, Simi after being absent a lot of his life and living a life of excess. It’s hard, he doesn’t know this young man anymore, but he is trying to make amends. Suddenly he receives a call from an old school friend, Daisy, who he hasn’t heard from in thirty years, only to tell him his Aunt Elma is dying, and he needs to make the journey from Atlanta to Massachusetts. With Simi’s mum being away on a trip, he needs to come with him which lands as well as a brick on rubber.

His aunt is nothing like he remembers, she’s frail and spouting delusional nonsense, but what Is the howling that he can hear at night? It sounds very animalistic, but an animal couldn’t utter the words, Ward, could they? Tom Rimer plays hard in Malevolent Nevers, no sugar coating, it’s straight for the throat. Each clue to the story meant something, nothing is given away for free.

Malevolent Nevers takes us on a hellish journey into the dark waters of Rimer’s mind. Be careful of when you read it – it’s likely to steal your sleep!

Simi and his estranged dad, Abe, need to go back to Foxborough MA because Elma, the Ward matriarch, is about to die, and needs to “go over some things.”

Elma appears to have been a gatekeeper for the beasts on the swamp and the whole town has relied on the Wards to do keep everyone safe and the monsters at bay.

This book is perfect to read this month. It occurs in October in New England and the climax takes place Halloween night.

Rich character building, very cool nursery rhyme that encapsulates the Ward history, scary scary monsters. I would have appreciated more Ward history but that is a good sign, because I was invested in these characters.

Malevolent Nevers is a new Gothic horror novel by Tom Rimer. This is my first of Rimer’s books, but I can guarantee that it won’t be my last! Malevolent Nevers turned out to be everything that I love about horror: characters you care about, a mystery to be solved, and downright terrifying monsters. What I didn’t expect to find was an emotional connection that had me invested in the main characters from page one and a story I just couldn’t let go of until the very end.

“…Here they wait for all our evers,
O’ Malevolent, Malevolent Nevers.”

Malevolent Nevers takes place in the real-world town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, though I believe the author may have taken a few liberties in crafting the town, such as making it feel and behave like a much smaller, rural town than the real Foxborough. Or, at least that’s how I felt while reading and from the little bit of research into Foxborough that I did afterward. In any case, Foxborough and its residents are as much a part of the story as are the main characters. The central mystery of Ward House is so intertwined with the history of the area that Foxborough becomes a key player in the events of the book. An author’s note at the end of the book even lays out just how much the real life Foxborough and the author’s life there inspired specific events from the book and it’s these little things that really ground a horror story firmly in reality.

Ward House, the ancestral home of the Ward family, has stood for generations and has passed to each subsequent head of the family since it was built. Appearing to loom straight out of the marsh in front of which it stands, with its Gothic architecture and eerie facade, Ward House is something the locals of Foxborough know to avoid. Like I mentioned of the town before, Ward House is integral to the plot. Indeed, everything centers around the mystery of the house and the creatures that make their home in the wetlands that surround it. From the dead silence of the marsh to the eerily decorated clown room, unease bleeds from the pages. It reminded me so much of the eponymous house from Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. However, where Jackson’s story ended with readers unsure of whether Eleanor’s experiences were real or imagined, Malevolent Nevers is not so subtle. Which isn’t to say that it lacks all subtlety, just that I definitely appreciated the build up and pay off of the mystery revealed.

“Oh, Abe. Have you forgotten? Have you been gone so long that you can’t remember this place? They’re still here you know. They’ve been waiting for you. For this. For now and what is soon to become of me.” Her smirk widened. “You know the rules.”

Just as powerful as the real-world New England setting and the Ward estate, the actual characters of Malevolent Nevers blew me away. Abel, who spent most of Simi’s life drifting from bar to bar, has cleaned up his act, but it takes more than being there to prove to Simi that Abel is worth the trouble. Parents aren’t always ready to step up when the time comes and, as I can attest, their children aren’t always willing to just pick up like no time was lost when they finally come around to realizing what is important. In many ways, their relationship echoed that of mine and my father’s and I was completely hooked on the dynamic between the two of them from the start. It would be enough if the good characterization ended there, but Mags, Daisy, and even the citizens of Foxborough who have next to no “screen time” still feel real and fully fleshed out. It would also be very remiss of me not to mention that this book has not one, but TWO (2) badass centenarians in it. I really love it when older people get to show their strength on page, which in this case was the emotional strength of Elma who faces down her grisly responsibilities with grace and poise and Ulf’s physical strength, belying his age.

If you can’t tell by now, I absolutely loved Malevolent Nevers! The mystery of Ward House, the amazing characters that Rimer has written, and the chilling descriptions of the Nevers themselves were all perfectly executed. I completely tore through this book at lightning speed. Initially, it was because I couldn’t get enough, but then an action packed second half had me tearing through the pages to discover the secret of Ward House and the fate of all those entertwined in its mystery! Malevolent Nevers easily takes a place in my top reads of the year. Horror isn’t just for Halloween; I’d be hard-pressed to suggest a better book to curl up with under the covers on a cold Winter night. But, be warned. Some secrets should remain buried.

Evil has a way of signaling to those who are willing.
Willing to hear it.
Willing to smell it.
Willing to absorb it.
Something was about to happen.
An entire town braced itself.
And Abel Ward and Daisy Peltzer rumbled on back home to Ward House.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a fun read and I was engaged right away. What I loved most was the way the characters were written - they were very believable and had heart. It's a bit of a slow burn, but I was never not interested. The author provides you just enough info throughout to keep you engaged and interested in what's going to happen next.

I highly recommend if you're looking for a fun, spooky story =)

This book was fantastic! Malevolent Nevers is a slow suspense creep, to explosive end chapters. The story telling talent is incredible. I was raptured through the entire book, and could not put it down. Seriously, I read it in one sitting.
Want a book that has all the calling cards of a scary story? You get clowns, scary monsters, eerie sounds in the night, crazy old lady, rituals, and creepy nursery rhymes! Every chapter had something to help building the sense of dread. If moving to a dilapidated old house wasn’t enough to give you warning, the sounds behind the shed will have you running.
Not super gory, but still enough blood to make is horror. The book was most definitely a scary tale, a good classic horror scare. Plenty of substance within the characters, especially the father and son. Their journey within the house, and finding each other, gives the story heart. I love horror that has all the feels!

I was introduced to Tom Rimer through Twitter and a few weeks later noticed he was releasing a new book. Knowing very little about Tom or his writing style, but recognizing he is a "Horror Author", I jumped at the opportunity to buy his new book. And I am extremely happy I did. Malevolent Nevers is kind of like coming across a fantastic tasting craft beer. Both start out with the "wow" factor and as you work your way through it, you hope it doesn't come to end. The novel has likeable/relatable characters, an amazing setting and an intensity that never really dissipates throughout the book. My first Tom Rimer novel, but definitely not my last.

Malevolent Nevers came to my attention while perusing the Books of Horror Facebook group. The cover is striking, colorful and extremely creepy, so I downloaded it to my Kindle.

It turned out to be one of my favorite horror novels of the last decade at least. It is a wonderful New England gothic tale that is truly creepy and scary, and kept me reading until 4am two nights in a row until it was finished. It has shades of Burnt Offerings (the novel), Poltergeist (the great film), and even Salem's Lot. This is in no way a vampire story, but the atmosphere was similar in the best way. My wife and I have both read it now, and we agree that the ending is perfect, which is quite unusual for a horror novel these days.

If you are a fan of horror fiction you will love Malevolent Nevers. It is dramatic, funny, chilling, and thrilling. It was an amazingly satisfying read, and I cannot wait to read more of Tom Rimer's work.

Malevolent Nevers

I really enjoyed this one. Good set of characters, great setting and the evil menace at the centre of the book was great. This book can’t come more highly recommended. One of the best indie horror books I’ve read this year. Will definitely be keeping my eyes open for more works by Tom Rimer in the future.

Thank you, Tom Rimer

This is the second book I have read from this author.

This was a very slow burn with great attention to detail. The more I read, the more the novel became enjoyable. I really enjoyed the last third of the story. Lovers of family dark secrets that are attached to ancestry land passed on from generations to generations will love this storyline. I definitely will be reading more from this author.

Okay so I just finished Malevolent Nevers and WOW. That was fantastic. I don't know what i expected but it was not that. I was not disappointed at all. I loved this book. I felt the fear, but I also felt sadness and hope and confusion along with the characters. This book was so well written. Amazing.

Creepy Nevers

Takes awhile for the action to happen, but the story is entertaining and the characters are flawed but likable. If anything, would have liked to see more monster action. Worth the read!

I absolutely love this book! The beginning of the book really set up the atmosphere for this Gothic horror story. The writing and character development were outstanding and really built up the sense of fear. When the action started, it was filled with horror and became very fast paced. I found that I didn’t want the story end! I highly recommend Malevolent Nevers!

Father and son relationships, headless animals, teen angst, ooze, and clowns. I mean seriously. What’s not to like?
All in all, Malevolent Nevers was a fun journey. While there were several intense scenes, nothing super terrifying. In fact, I might consider it a good intro-to-the-horror-genre type of book. The concept was great and takes a neat spin on the generational trope. I would love more history on the Malevolent Nevers. What are they? Why did the family end up doing what they did? Here’s me, hoping for more. Fun read and a nice palette cleanser.

Abel Ward left his home as soon as he could.
Just about twenty years later, his high school crush, Daisy, calls. His great aunt Elma is quickly declining.
Si simply wants to spend his time with his bestie and girlfriend, Mags. Instead he's forced to tag along with his dad.
They call to Si - in his dreams, in his thoughts they call his name.
Elma recites the age old rhyme. The nevers calling for the blood of the promised Ward. Abel chooses to bury her - and the nightmare begins.
Creepy. Violent creatures. Lots of goo. An old Victorian house. And a family legacy to protect the town. Great read.

Oh, Malevolent Nevers, just give them what they want!! Really enjoyed this creepy tale. A great storyline that kept me reading and wanting to know what’s going to happen. Which to me, is one of the most important things in a good horror story. The relationship between father and son is extremely relatable, to those of us that have to rebuild relationships. I’m not going to say anymore, other than, read this!

A story with bite
Whoa, what a great story. This was a one day read because I couldn’t put it down. A creepy house, swamp, town, with clowns, how much more horror could you want. Well this book does give you more. The creatures are ghastly and the characters and plot are interesting. Very happy that I finally read this and I look forward to reading more from this author.

I came across Tom Rimer in a Facebook group, and I sure am glad I did. This book was such a great read. It had everything a horror story should include, from a creepy, old house to a bedroom decorated completely in clowns. The story was intense and I loved the characters we met in this book. I definitely look forward to reading other books by this author.

. I have a ton of books to read but I've decided every 3rd book I read is going to be an unknown writer. 5 🌟 Dude. You kept me entertained with likable characters and a well rounded plot. A good old Haunted house. What can go wrong. SPOILER AERT. Abe annoyed me , in a good way tho. The man was srupid, to say the least Another author would have killed him off. Anyway thanks for the ride.

If you like spooky gothic novels that bring plenty of creeps without the extreme gore, then don’t skip Malevolent Nevers by Tom Rimer. It’s got all the makings of a classic tale, complete with a dilapidated mansion, strange noises in the woods, and a small town secret but told with a more modern tongue. One of the few books of the year that made me look over my shoulder while reading alone at night.

Malevolent Nevers is my first book by Tom Rimer, I discovered him through twitter where I was a lucky winner of one of his giveaways ( not a free copy of this book - I used my hard earned cash for that purchase). I started to look into this book and thought ok it's not my usual genre of books ( I find horror to be somewhat boring - SHOCK AND AWE) but I like this guy and the book sounds interesting (my interest was piqued)

I was not disappointed. My mind is now open to more horror in the future thanks to this book.

This book is great, the characters are well developed, the “ward house” is creepy and the monsters are the stuff of nightmares. There is what I consider a very slow burn at the start of the book (bare with it) man oh man does it pick up in the second half. I just found the pages turning and turning and myself riding to the conclusion at breakneck speed.

Overall such a fun page turning read and an author who I will definitely be reading more of.

I took this book to the 9th circle of Hell better known as the dmv it immediately grabbed me and pulled me in. I was called by my number twice before i was able to tear myself away from the book. I was actually trying to decide if i really needed a real ID so i could continue reading. When i left the DMV i had to put it in the trunk to keep myself from diving back in and forgetting to pick up my granddaughter from pre k when i got home i locked myself in the bathroom(only place to read with 3 kids under 8 underfoot) and read till they found me. Today i finally finished the book in the bathroom pretending to take a shower. You can forget all family responsibilities this book will grab you snd not let go till the final pages. I am looking forward to my next Tom Rimer

After reading Tom Rimer's The Glowing and seeing how well he handled some of the more horrific elements of his sci-fi alien invasion trilogy, I was eager to see what he did when moving into the supernatural/horror sphere, and Rimer smashed it.
Malevolent Nevers is a book that grows ever more sinister and unsettling until it reaches it's action-packed conclusion.
Rimer keeps the cast small, and the relationship between Simi and his father Abe is one of the most important aspects. After long being estranged, Abe is trying to repair a relationship with his son. This isn't helped when he's forced to drag him across the country to the home of a dying great aunt, Elma.
Once we reach the house, the situation quickly becomes unsettling. The dying woman suggests that Abe has a duty to perform, but it's all too cryptic for him to fathom.
And when the old lady dies, the situation in the house only grows more intense.
Rimer handles the tension well, knowing when to draw out a scene and ramp it up, and when to bring it to an end, leaving us wondering what's really going on.
Highly recommended.

Malevolent Nevers is a creepy, unsettling horror novel that will suck you right in and leave you breathless by the end. I rather enjoyed it, and I can't wait to see what other books the author comes out with. I will for sure be reading more.
The story follows a teenage boy named Simi as his absent dad comes back into his life and tries to mend fences. The pair go on a journey to the dad's childhood home after being summoned because his (the dad's) great aunt's health is declining and she wishes to see him. Sounds like a simple premise, right? Wrong. If the word Malevolent in the title is anything to go by, you should expect just that. Something terrifying, dark, and, well, malevolent.
This book was a delight for a horror fan like me. It's got a well-written plot, likeable characters, an old Victorian house, monsters, and more. What's not to like?
I found myself immediately drawn in, and while I did finish the book later than anticipated (thanks, real life, for getting in the way), I absolutely loved everything about it after I did finish.
Definitely worth the read if you're a fan of horror.
