Forced to work with a hot headed FBI agent, a rookie detective must stop a deranged serial killer before he kills again.
Tanvi Nightingale may be a rookie detective but her instincts about a serial killer hunting in Indianapolis are spot on. Fighting to get a team together, leads her to former FBI profiler, Frank Tench.
Even the FBI doubts the facts of this case and sends hotheaded Lucas McGinn to aid in the investigation. Tanvi and Lucas are like oil and water and it’s all Frank can do to keep the two working toward the same goal. As more women go missing and existing cases are connected to theirs, the clues get even harder to read.
A Boston native with a dark history, Lucas is used to getting under people’s skin. You could say it was his calling. But Tanvi is different. There’s something about her that brings out the worst in him until a kiss changes everything.
With the capture of their man, they think things are looking up. Only to discover there is a serial killer cult in Indianapolis. Lucas and Tanvi are just pawns in their game.
Desperate to keep Tanvi and her family safe, Lucas will do anything to end this. But the killers have only just started playing with their newest toys. The closer the investigators get to one another, the angrier the cult leader becomes.
Grin is a fast paced enemies to lovers story in the second installment of Angela Breen’s Department of Second Chances Series.
The chemistry between Tanvi and Lucas was great. I really enjoyed their scenes together, and the development of their relationship was balanced and believable. Sometimes stories with romance have these insta-love things, or unhealthy relationships, not this one. Curious to check out the author's other books. From what I’ve researched of the other books she writes; it seems like she’s written stories about the other characters in this novel, too.
The dialogue was like a movie script, it flowed well and was realistic, especially when it came to the investigation into the murders. I did not see that ending coming. You have to read this. I love a good mystery with twists on twists on twists, and this delivers! Can't go wrong with this book. Gives me criminal minds vibes. The story really lends itself to the visual aspect, too. Very descriptive. I could see this easily being adapted into film.
Ok!! So I don't read much romantic suspense. I mean I like it ok but it's not something I'm itching to snatch up and read EXCEPT when it's this author. I have been WAITING for this book for what feels like forever 😂😂
I read the first book in this series: What's in a Name? (FYI they can be standalone! How awesome is that!) and I really enjoyed that one. So much so, I have been checking for this next book a lot. Sssoooo color me ECSTATIC when I get a message from the author asking if I would like to review Grin. Ummmmm YES!! 😂😂
Grin was a fantastic read and I devoured this in one sitting. I could not, and did not, want to put this down. It just flows and reads so well I was lost in the story. I mean come on now ... serial killer (so of course murder y'all), police procedures, drama, suspense, a little bow-chicka-wow-wow, and of course (my fav) sarcastic humor and witty banter. WHEW! If that doesn't make you want to snatch this up...well don't worry I'll get you help 😂😂
I absolutely LOVE Tanvi and Lucas. They are perfect counterparts. I was laughing so much when they interacted. It was always a fun time LOL. This one does have some vibes of Criminal Minds too and I LOVE that too. Honestly, there wasn't anything about this I didn't love.
If you like crime fiction with a little romance thrown in and even some fun banter, SNAG this one. It may be book 2 but you do not miss anything without having read the first book BUT you should snag that one too 😂😂 I cannot WAIT to grab ALL the Department of Second Chances books.
I sincerely appreciate the publisher and Angela Breen for providing me with a review copy. All opinions expressed herein are mine and mine alone.
Frank Tench reminds me of Bill Tench from Mindhunter on Netflix. They both work at the FBI. I find it a little incredible that she got him to help when her own boss refused. That, aside, this was a great mystery, if a little too gruesome
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The story hinges around a chess match which was interesting.... But it's not your average chess match. The pieces and players are caught in a whirlwind of kidnappings and bodies piling up. And the bad guys have codenames from Alice in Wonderland. I loved that part. It was also nice to see some old friends from the other books by Angela Breen. I would recommend this book to lovers of sexy thrillers
If you love thrillers with romance this is your next read. Tanvi and Lucas have just the right amount of chemistry. They don't start of strong, but the attraction is there. I found the storyline to be unique and well developed. The last few chapters had me glued to the book.
Overall this was a decent romance novel. The romance and the criminal investigation storylines were interesting and moved along quickly. I was disappointed by the numerous grammatical and typographical errors throughout.
