NYPD forensics expert Lilith Adams may not be exactly human but it has not made her life any less monotonous. All she wants is a real mystery to chase--a purpose. Everything is about to change and her quiet little life will never be the same. When her uncle goes missing from a small town in Tennessee, Lilith's doting father sends her to investigate with his head of security, Chance Deveraux. They quickly find themselves in a whirlwind of violence and terror that uncovers a secret that has been buried for over 600 years: a vengeful secret that could very well cost her everything. To survive, Lilith and Chance have to find powerful new allies...but trusting them may be the biggest mistake of all.

“More than anything, I wanted to challenge the concept of reality and the supernatural while truly digging into the emotional grit of tragedy. I often began writing with a clear goal in mind, but the characters swayed me in different directions. I’ve fallen in love with the ways they’ve developed and grown over the first three books, and I look forward to discovering the surprises they have in store for me in the future.”
**I would like to thank the author, Jenny Allen, for giving me as signed print copy of her book for an honest review**
Just when you think you can't find any more takes on vampires, you do :) The vampires in this book are not like the normal vampires, they have a heartbeat, they can get beat up, shot, etc. But they still drink blood from the blood banks they own, and they can heal if they can get blood in time. There are also a few other creatures that are in the book that have different abilities as well.
Lilith (Lily) is an independent forensics expert, I thought her job was cool. Well, not for me per se, but I thought it was a cool that you have a Vampire as a forensics expert. Now, she doesn't have the smell senses and all of that stuff, she's just good at her job. Her partner Detective Alvarez is a good man that I liked a lot even though he wasn't in the book much.
Lilith's uncle Duncan goes missing and her father, Gregor, asks her to head down to Knoxville to see what is going on. He has Chance, another vampire that she has known for years, to go with her and act as her body guard. Note: I love the author added Knoxville, TN as the place for the new crimes as I was born down the road from there and have family there :)
Anyway, they go down to Knoxville and find out more of the family is missing and turning up dead in horrific torture scenes. Gregor seems to suddenly know who is doing all of these massacres and wants Lily home right away. Of course Lily refuses because she's really cool and her and Chance end up in a world of trouble that spans centuries.
I thought the book was great and I loved all of the characters, even the evil ones were played out really good. This is a large book with a massive amount of information and things going on, but it's nothing that will confuse you. I should know, I get confused a lot. There is a part where they were talking about DNA and mixing and matching this that and the other that made me faze out, but I digress :)
There is a little bit of romance thrown in, but not too much, they are all too busy trying to stay alive and just when you think you might get a breather at the end..... a whole other can of worms opens and it ends on a cliffhanger.. to be continued...
Great start to a series, reminded me of the Sookie Stackhouse Series with a csi component. This wasn't a book for me but i really liked the original twist to the vampire lore. If I have any negative comments, they are aesthetics only. I did not care for the cover nor the font. Other than that i thought it was a very solid read and i rather enjoyed it. Great writing and really nicely developed characters.
Thanks for the free copy Jenny Allen!! You did a great job!!
First off I would like to give this book 3.5 stars! Great book with CSI, Vampires & a little bit of romance. Definitely keeps you on your toes just when you think you have it figured it.. trust me you don’t!

Where to begin, I finished Blood Lily a few days ago, normally I like to write a review right away but I wanted it to sink in throughly before I began, because there was so much that happened, it kinda leaves you with the feeling did that just happen.
Blood Lily was fantastic, it literally grabs your attention from the very first chapter and does not let go. There is so very much happening, I have not read a vampire book like this in a long time, there was purpose, action, adventure, heartache, love and loss. The world and characters that Jenny Allen has brought to life are quite amazing take Lily (Lilith) for instance she is bad ass, seriously bad ass, not in the way Angelina Jolie character in Wanted was, but bad ass in that she does not even know it, she is smart, sarcastic (which I think is her best quality) does not give up even when the odds are stacked against her, she's a fighter. Then there is Chance let me just say I would have loved to have been Lily for just a bit, the attraction, no not just attraction the adoration that he has for Lily is something that most people will go without for there entire lives. Detective Cohen seems special in ways I am sure we have not even begun to realize, even if you want to drop kick him halfway through next week. Gregor, Lilys father has so many layers, I guess it would be hard not to when you have been blending into society for more then 600 years. Ashcroft is sick, twisted, he is demented is probably the nicest word I can use here. The rest of Allens characters are just as beautifully written, and I want more of the world, heck I want more of Lily and Chance, even Cohen. No that's not true I need more!
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
Amazing, truly amazing. I have to say this dark thrilling romance is absolutely amazing. This is my first read from Jenny and I honestly can’t wait to read more. This book isn’t draggy or anything, the characters are well written and truly Jenny sucks you into her story and you won’t be able to put it down.
I honestly love Lilith a vampire and Chance her father’s body guard who’s is very protective of her. Then you have the other characters who are so well written. This story truly blew me away, thank you honestly Jenny for the copy I can’t wait to read more in the series!
mystery, adventure, forensics and Vampires all rolled into one book, with a slow burn forbidden romance that has you rooting for the fmc & mmc.
I love how much depth and emotion Lily and Chance have, they both have flaws and they are very much on display, you will find no "perfect" characters here. I also really enjoyed the different take on vampires in this, they are not your normal unnaturally good looking, super speed, extra superpowers type.
the mystery does not stop with this book, just as soon as you figure one thing out it brings on more questions...and detective Cohen is my biggest question mark....I can't wait to find out more about him in the next book.
Blood Lilly is wild ride. If you like mystery dark romance with vampires, half - bloods, and other worldly creatures. I give this book 5 out 5 stars and 2 Chilli peppers. Check your trigger warnings.
This is a brilliant action story with strong characters and a plot that is very well-thought-out. I liked the strong heroine, who is not an action figure caricature but a real person with strengths and weaknesses, as are all of the characters. But it's not only the action; the complex feelings of the characters are also explored as the story unfolds, something that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I liked the modern, scientific take on vampires, the well-researched details about crime scenes and labs, and most of all the twists and turns of the plot, which didn't seem unexpected or disjointed, but were foreshadowed and seemed to flow and merge nicely with the plot. The author has put a lot of effort into the story, which is original and has many elements weaving into each other organically, so that you end up thinking "Of course! This makes sense!" often throughout the book, while still being completely surprised at the turn of events.
My critique, and the reason I'm giving three stars for a book that otherwise would easily get four, has mostly to do with grammar and style. The errors were frequent enough to influence my feeling of enjoyment when reading. Although the language is beautiful at times, one often feels that careful editing is needed. Adjectives are routinely used as adverbs. The past perfect tense has been nearly eliminated so that everything is narrated in past tense, giving the impression that things long finished are still happening at the time of the narration. There are words used wrongly, transitive verbs used as intransitive, some verbs used in ways that didn't make sense to me (I found "caress a hand over his cheek" strange, for example). Punctuation, especially commas, is mostly lacking but sometimes is wrongly placed. Misspellings, ("Julianne fries," "lightening reflexes," "reigned in her emotions"), unfortunate placement of adverbial expressions. I'll stop here, you get my point.
It is an amazing story, however, and if it was turned into a Netflix series, I would be binge-watching it without a second thought.
This book just sneaked behind me, put me on my ass and kicked me for good measure. The thing is, I’m a writer. I actually flatter myself into thinking that I sort of am a good one too, you know. Well, the very first thing I have to say about Jenny’s debut novel is that – and yes, I absolutely hate her for it – it is better than mine. We all got tired of vampires half a decade ago but it’s not Dracula, Diaries or Twilight kinda novel; it’s a gripping, fascinating, let’s-order-in-so-I-don’t-have-to-stop and stay awake until 3 to finish it kind of thriller that just happen to have non-human characters. I got caught from the first sentence and it was literally impossible to stop reading until the end. In one hand, you have Lilith, forensic who knows her shit, and generally verges on the kick-ass side of the scale. No whinny heroine there! I got a tiny bit frustrated with her at some point, but just in a “don’t go in there alone!!” kinda way rather than the usual “why don’t you just die? It would make the story relatively interesting” female lead tend to inspire. Chance, Lily’s bodyguard, is a flawless character; by that I don’t mean that he’s actually perfect, far from it. He’s childish and gets cranky, sometimes, but he is one of the most realistic male character I’ve ever had the pleasure to discover. He messes up. He gets emotional. The sweetness and vulnerability remind me of any thirty years old friends of mine; they aren’t old wise, seen-it-all! They play X-box and don’t wash their hands after taking a leek. It’s good to see a real man, and a swoon-worthy one at that. So yep, he’d quite high on my imaginary crush list. In short, I absolutely loved Blood Lily and I intend to read each and every novel Jenny Allen graces us with – if that’s her first, I can’t wait to see what’s next!!
Vampire+Forensic Investigator=the FMC I didn’t know I needed!
This books is such a unique book! I was hesitant at first bc my degrees are in forensics and I work in criminal justice so I often struggle with crime/mystery books due to the inaccuracy, but this books was so accurate! The forensic was spot on and even mentioned little tricks (like the Vaseline) that only people in the field would know. I really enjoyed the supernatural elements of the book and how it’s played into the over all murder mystery. There is 0 romance, and part of the reason I am only giving it four starts is because the author introduces a romance but it fell flat for me compared to all the other elements of the book. I found it to be a tad predictable at times, but still really enjoyed the overall concept and story! Would definitely read book 2!
Triggers: descriptions of crime scenes, torture, mutilated bodies, rape mention (not on page and not described)
I really enjoyed this book. The cover is very catching to me. I think it a yet a different spin on a vampire book. It is a series so I was left guessing at the end. I would read more from this author and I would love to see what happens next in this series. *I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
I was gifted Blood Lily for my first read in 2023, and I do not hesitate to recommend it to others. It is part police-procedural, dark mystery/thriller, supernatural, and even a little contemporary romance, and I am excited to continue the story in Jenny's sequel, Rose of Jericho.
Jenny Allen presents Blood Lily, with Lillith as our main heroine, a vampire from a long-surviving family who works nights as a steadfast crime scene investigator in New York. Her father, a wealthy entrepreneur and vampire benefactor, sends her to Tennessee with his bodyguard, Chance, to investigate the disappearance of Lily's paternal uncle. Unfortunately, Lily and Chance soon find themselves in a blood feud with another supernatural family after discovering Lily's cousin's tortured and mutilated body. While she knows her uncle's life is likely at risk, it becomes a race against the clock to get to the bottom of the plot against her family with the local police detective as Lily learns how deadly this blood feud has been over the past 600 years. She must consider the future of her entire race as she falls in love, dodges bullets, and follows forensic evidence to this book's cliffhanger ending.
As an experienced, well-educated reader, there were things I loved about Jenny's craftsmanship. However, there were a few things that I was consistently hung up on that may also influence other readers' experiences. I struggled with several transitions in the story, infrequently having to re-read several previous paragraphs to track who was doing what/what was going on. At first, I just chalked it up to reading too fast, but after the 3rd or 4th time, I found myself having to give up on tracing the story back to figure out how it went from one point to another. Several more instances in the story required me to keep reading to see if my confusion would resolve, including using verbiage or terminology in ways that were not immediately clear. Having patience and giving the author grace were vital to enjoying this book. Jenny wrote a fantastic plot in general and has a talent for unexpected twists that keep the story moving quickly. At one point, I became misty-eyed and even got goosebumps toward the end of the book. I give Blood Lily a well-earned 4 out of 5 stars.
I Would like to first thank the author for gifting me a copy of her book to read and give an honest review.
If the series, "Bones" and "Criminal Minds" had a baby this book would be it. It's packed with action and mystery, while trying to catch a serial killer. We have a vampire take that I personally have never read before. To be honest, at first, I didn't really like the first few chapters of the book with the new take of the vampire species, however later on it grew on me where it introduced combinations of other paranormal. It all worked amazingly well. Throughout the book there's lots of hilarious banter between the mmc and fmc with a slow burn and forbidden love story. Lots of turns and plot twist were knowing who to trust gets dodgy. Lilly is a forensic investigator who gets thrown into investigating the disappearance of her uncle. In doing so it unleashes a monster hunt while opening a pandora box of family secrets and tested loyalties. And while I did like her character at times, she was so childish and impulsive it made me want to slap her. Here is the thing though, if an author gets you to have any emotions for a character she did her job well. The bodyguard sent with lily to investigate Chance is a very head strong mcc by no means perfect and that makes him charming in a lot of ways. The story keeps you engaged and on edge to see what's going to happen next. I couldn't put it down. It does end with a cliffhanger that opens a brand new pandoras box. For those who like shows like criminal minds, bones, csi or other similar mystery thrillers this is the book for you. Do be warned! This book has a bit of bloody gore so do check trigger warnings.
The Plot: Lilith Adams is a vampire. But she’s not like a “Hollywood vampire.” She can be killed the same way humans can, making her kind vulnerable. Her father, Gregor, has centuries of history that Lilith doesn’t know about, and it all comes to a head when he sends her to Knoxville, Tennessee to try and locate his brother, Duncan, who has gone missing. Lilith is an NYPD forensic investigator, so he requests that she take along her investigators kit, just in case. He also sends his head of security, Chance Deveraux, as her personal bodyguard. Lilith is not prepared for what she discovers in Knoxville, and is forced to face her fathers mistakes of the past. Encountering species that she did not know existed, Lilith and Chance are put through the ringer trying to figure out who they can trust, and trying to stay alive.
The Review: Truthfully, this book blew me away. I am not a vampire-loving person, I’ve never read some of the most popular vampire books. Actually, this is the first book I’ve ever read that the main character was a vampire. I was skeptical for this reason, but Allen made the characters almost-normal. Had there not been a few parts where they needed blood to survive, I probably would’ve forgotten they were vampires. No gory blood-sucking, which I was thankful for. Allen’s writing style is easy to follow, while still being descriptive and captivating. Just when I thought I had it figured out, she threw in a twist I wasn’t expecting, keeping me on my toes at all times. Overall, I would give this book a 10/10. The character development, the writing style, the plot, all of it exceeded my expectations and I can’t wait to get the next book in the series!
I have a confession, I hate romance books. The minute I start reading a will they/won't they story line, you've lost me. This book has that, so romance fans rejoice! What is so special about this book is that despite that, I truly enjoyed the story.
First, the change in vampire lore was an intriguing idea. What if it is genetic and not some mystical power? Can vampires be explained by science?
Second, the mystery at the core of this book was well done. Even when some puzzles are easy to put together, there were still surprises. Why are the vamps in Lily's family disappearing? And who is trying to kill her?
The characters were likable and the story moved very quickly once you get to the action parts. I appreciate an author who doesn't drag it out endlessly.
I would recommend this for fans of Anne Rice, readers of The Merry Gentry series by Laurell K. Hamilton, Twilight enthusiasts, and anyone willing to tolerate some romance in the pursuit of a good story.
I want to preface by saying that fantasy is not my genre. I have read several with the inability to get attached to characters or storyline. I say all that to say, Blood Lily was totally opposite for me.
This story winds together fantasy and reality in such an enthralling way that makes the story more believable. I didn't feel like I was reading a heavy fantasy novel the entire time. Even though there are lots and lots of elements of it, it was the perfect combination.
It was captivating, action packed, made you sit on the edge of your seat, and loaded with loads of mystery.
Definitely a 5 star read for me. I was completely engaged with the crime storyline and the hint of romance between characters added even a deeper element for me. It did end on a cliffhanger, normally I would be disappointed in that, but it was written so well I'm hooked on the story now.
Blood Lily will grip you as you embark on a riveting roller coaster ride. It's fantasy, scientific thriller, crime, paranormal, horror and romance woven perfectly together into a mysterious story you will never want to end. Jenny Allen is a brilliant descriptive writer. She has a talent of perfectly placing you in the moment, as well as the ability to inject you into the inner workings of the unique characters she creates. You will be charmed by her perfect delivery of sarcasm and witty humor. Someone needs to hurry up and make this movie! I loved it! Currently reading the next book in the series "Rose Of Jericho". Get cozy with this series because you won't want to put it down.
Imagine if CSI and True Blood had a baby, and that baby grew to something so much bigger than you could have ever imagined. The story line and plot of this book are laid out to perfection. You will dive into a world of new ideas about vampires, one that I believe is the realest take on the idea that I’ve ever read. Not some sparkling, faster than the speed of light non sense. This book is a thrill ride, emotional journey that had me binge reading from start to finish. I am a super fan of the writing style, banter, quick wit, sarcastic prose between the 2 main characters. And the build up between them had me begging for more. That cliffhanger ending…. I about threw my book across the room!!!! Then decided to run and buy the next one immediately!!! Well freaking done!!!
This was a fun story. Exactly the type of story I used to read a ton of, supernatural romance type deal, so I'm not surprised I enjoyed reading it! While I did my time with these types of series and have found myself drawn to standalone novels more nowadays it's always nice to occasionally dip my toes back in. Even moreso if the lore is a bit different from what you're used to seeing in supernatural storylines such as this one. Well written and quickly draws you in so you keep reading to find out what will happen!
I definitely need to check out the next book in this series!
This was fun! I’m usually not big on romance so some bits make me cringe, but again, I’m usually not a romance reader. I overall really enjoyed this though! It gave me subtle vibes of the Charley Davidson series probably because of the attitude of the main females and the supernatural/investigating aspect. I also enjoyed that series! I’m excited to read the next book and definitely hope to see more from this author after this series! My favorite aspects of this book were the more dark scenes and learning about the supernatural races/history of why this is happening. Hoping for more of that!
Omg when Jenny Allen said "enjoy the ride" that's putting it mildly!! This does end on a cliffhanger you have been warned. Lily and Chance's banter I absolutely loved and if you are a vampire fan and want a blend of true crime, look no further. I couldn't put this book down and packed a punch I didn't see coming and Jenny Allen does all fantastic job of picturing the story. I highly enjoyed the little jokes that we're been told about vampires. 🤭🤭

I loved this book and can tell it’s going to be a great series. It’s captivating right from the start and the story line is fab. It had me in the edge of my seat. I look forward to reading the rest in the series. It follows Lily a forensic expert in the field that specialises in her species which is vampire. Her dad asks for her help in finding her uncle whom has gone missing. Some pretty horrendous deaths in this and some betrayal a slow burn to combustion attraction. This story came together flawlessly. What an ending.
Forget what you know about vampires, I love this version of them and the world they live in. This was my first book by Jenny Allen but will not be my last. I loved everything about this book. The style of writing, the story line, the characters. Plan on losing sleep because you will not want to stop reading once start. the end will leave you with one heck of book hangover and wanting more. Book 2? Yes please.
I really enjoyed this first instalment. It's well written, the unique take on vampires and forensic angle of the story is very captivating, once the action starts it will keep you turning the page until the very end, and then you'll be eager to delve right into the next! If you enjoy a mix of contemporary romance, mystery, supernatural thriller, you'll enjoy this one too. #teamchance but I'm curious about Cohen
