Caroline Hirons' book 'Skincare' was a Sunday Times bestseller w/c 24-05-2021.
Such a great gide into skincare - informative, fun, very well researched, this is really a skincare bible for both newbies and advanced users. Highly recommend!
I had given the first edition 4 stars. To be honest, I did not see so much difference in this new edition. There are a few pages more of given topics (eg acne from having to wear masks in Covid times) and the book description says there are also new pictures and products recommendations have been updated. Not worth re-reading if you have the previous one. Bit disappointed that there is nothing more to this new edition so I took away one star from previous rating.
a really comprehensive guide to skincare that assumes your knowledge base is 0. the author tells you exactly the who/what/where/how of skin-care: she manages to fit in info for different age groups, skin needs, lifestyles, skin colors, price ranges etc. with clear instructions, pictures, and recommended products. i thought i knew a decent amount about skincare from research online & social media but still learned a bunch of new things while enjoying the author's bluntness and humor.
100% can see why this is referred to as the Skincare Bible. Super helpful in breaking things down, describing and recommending products, layering products, where to spend your hard earned money in your routine and how to tailor the perfect routine based on your needs 👏🏽
Would recommend this and will definitely refer back to this when considering any changes I want to make. Could literally help you tailor your routine for your skin type, skin condition and age or what you're wanting to achieve. A staple and useful at breaking down the jargon and the scare tactics used by some companies in the beauty industry. Also looking forward to moving on to Black Skin by Dija Ayodele as recommended by Caroline who wrote the forward. Whilst Caroline has a section on darker skin tones, I love how she points in the direction of a book to give you more specific and in depth knowlede, guidance and recommendations and is in no way trying to gatekeep 📚
Would definitely recommend as a useful stape and guide to return back to as and when needed. Also handy that Caroline is UK based so loads of good guidance on products you can pick up in the UK (can't comment on how available some of these steps internationally but I found it useful for sure). 5 stars for sure (would also highly recommend the very active facebook group and following Caroline on insta) 🌟
I bought this book as I have had serious eczema on my face for a month or so. I have suffered from this condition all my life, but have developed ways of dealing with and it was never my face. Being a woman of a certain age, most of my skincare contains age related active ingredients and those are not compatible with a serious flare up. This book not only helped me pick the right products for now, but it also arms you with a no holds barred view of the beauty industry and products. Caroline Hirons is a very straight talking lady and this is wonderful to read. Yes, she does have a slight bias in favour of some brands, but this is based on her knowledge of ingredients and her many years as an esthetician. Yes, she is someone to trust! The book covers all age groups and busts myths as well as giving you product and technique advice. I highly recommend this for all, but especially those suffering from sensitivity or breakouts. Caroline is THE Skincare Guru!
The book seems realistic. It doesn't give any magical formula for the "perfect skin" and it repeats a lot some advices along the pages. It also talks about which skin problems aren't solved by off-the-shelf products and need a dermatologist.
There is a whole chapter about SPF, which is also re-inforced in previous and following chapters, like "always use a dedicated 30 or 50+ SPF, and don't forget to re-apply during the day".
The last chapter also briefly explain the most common ingredients, and how to read an ingredients label to avoid falling in marketing slogans.
I will probably re-read some sections once in a while, so I ordered the hardcover. The kindle version is ok but the book isn't the best to read in digital format.
Excellent, Informative, Encouraging. Beauty therapist myself, having a 8yr break from treatments and now back on floor, this book really awoke my passion for skincare & the industry. I feel much more knowledgeable & excited about recommendations to clients. Some of this knowledge was probably in the grey area of my brain but there are a lot more new products available since I last worked. I borrowed the book from the library but ordered a copy of my own from Booktopia.
I started retinol last week & using hyaluronic acid serum, and a facial spritz after Caroline recommendations. It's helped my dry, dehydrated skin, and it's smooth & nourished.
I work in health & beauty retail so had some knowledge before reading this, which made me feel confident that the advice is accurate. This book is not a marketing tool for brands, or to encourage you to spend loads of money. She recommends’ higher end’ high street brands and budget friendly options. Caroline breaks down the routine into product steps and then explains the key ingredients or formulations you look out for. I would highly recommend this book for its no-nonsense approach to anyone and everyone to keep look after their skin.
Really great at breaking things down and honest about the oft-deemed “must haves” that aren’t actually worth spending money on. I also loved that she recommended specific brands at different price points for everyone that can’t spend a fortune on skincare. If I remember nothing else from this book, I will never be without SPF again and I’ll always “TITTT” (take it to the tits). Deepest apologies to my neck and décolleté for all the years of neglect 🥹
She comes off as really judgy and her product recommendations are super expensive. She says that you should be spending around 150 British pounds on a skincare product which is unattainable for most people. She harps on again and again, that teens don't need to worry but once you get to 40, you need a 15 (literally) products and steps skincare routine. Even the routine recommended for 25-30 was around 11 products. I can't imagine putting 11 products on my face, it'd be so greasy. The book seems a way to push products by saying that if you don't use that product and you're 40, you're done for. She also advocated for putting hand cream inside your nostrils to prevent germs from entering which has been debunked. I liked Jude Chao's "Skincare for Your Soul" much better.
I was surprised at how much I got out of this book - I considered myself fairly well versed in the realm of skincare however since reading I've added a few tweaks in my routine that have changed the game! Only giving this 3 stars though as there is SCARCE info on pregnancy/ menopausal skin concerns /product recommendations which I know I would have definitely appreciated when preggo.
This title has been mentioned a lot on skincare blogs, articles and the like. Unfortunately, most of the products that I tried that were highly recommended in the book or the website did not agree with my sensitive skin. I did successfully add a toner that is affordable and doesn't make my skin react. Hence the three stars from me.
But your mileage may vary based on your skin type.
In the name of transparency, this is the only book on skin I've read. However, it feels complete and doesn't leave me wanting more. In fact, this is my second time reading the book. Skin changes. It's good to refresh and think about different solutions for new problems.
In summary, read the book, do what Caroline says, and enjoy healthy skin and a radiant glow.
I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot! The only aspect that it didn’t address, which is a very big part IMO, is different products/routines for different skin types. It seemed generalized toward everyone as a whole rather than recommending specific routines/products for oily vs dry vs sensitive, etc.
This is the sort of book which need a solid read through and, will brought back out a million times. I imagine my copy will end up full of sticky notes before long as i trail and error on the skin care front. What I have learned is SPF is a absolute most. If you need a nonsense approach to learning about skincare this is the place to start.
Brilliant book, brilliant person. Everything you ever need to know about skincare from someone deeply empathetic. She thinks of everything. I felt so seen and understood when she even mentioned people who are having a chronic illness flare up and are incapable of usual skincare routines. I bought it for my 15 year old niece, really hope she reads it one day (and puts on SPF!)
Great guide to keep at hand for a lot of good advice and tips on skincare. I found particularly useful the mentions on how much product we should apply, as sometimes it's not too clear. Will keep this handy for a long time!
I've been having some acne, PD, and possibly ezcema. Working with a dermatologist but this book was far more informative than a 15 min office visit. Already seeing progress! THe book looks like but it's quick.
Read the original when it came out so made sense to read the newer update, it was perfectly up to date and included some really good brands and great price points for everyone. Really informative and great for anyone who loves skincare and wants to know more!
no word of a lie i read this and altered my routine slightly and the difference in such a short timespan is unbelievable. lowkey i think i owe caroline my life. or my firstborn kid. at the very least a fruit basket
I think it has all the information you need but needs re-editing. I found it muddled, be prepared to read it twice if you want to understand skincare rather than just follow Caroline’s recommendations.
loved this! wish Id had it when I was a teenager to avoid the nasty peach kernel scrubs I used!! anyway, got lots of great tips and made a few adjustments to my skin routine without breaking the bank! I can already see, others have commented too, an improvement. THANK YOU!
Dropped in and put of this over a couple of months but one of the best skincare books on the market with Caroline’s signature no bullshit approach. Have been following Caroline for years and should have read it sooner.
I found this really informative! A good balance of science but not explaining it in a ready friendly way! I’m looking forward to putting my new knowledge to good use
