Despite being named after the central protagonist of this run, the Beyond corporation, this is pure filler, so much so, that I would recommend skipping this "Miles and Shift take four comic book issues of pages to investigate what the Assessor's been up to, and search for someone from Miles' past" story and going straight to the next volume. 4 out of 12, Two Star read. This volume also includes the rather drab and unrelated(!) Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2021) Annual #1.

Yeah, this series is already starting to lose me. I’ll stick around since next volume looks like it might be cool, but the multiverse shit in here is truly abysmal and I hope there is no more of it after next volume. I like the Shift and Miles dynamic and the stuff with the Assessor, but I wasn’t a fan of much elsw. Also just fuck the Beyond status quo in general. I’m still annoyed that it fucked up Devil’s Reign and this volume did nothing to quell that annoyance.

This starts out with a solid entry in the ongoing Miles Vs. The Assessor plot line but then, about three quarters of the way through, spirals off into multiverse-hopping nonsense. The mid-book artist changes didn’t help matters. Still, I’m always happy to see Spider-Ham, albeit briefly.

This volume ended up being just ok. Miles and his “brother” go after the Assessor to finally take him down. Then right after that, go through a portal into the multiverse in search of his uncle. The book moves fast as hell as it’s just all fighting. No real meat and potatoes here.

Miles and Shift head into the bowels of the Beyond Corporation in order to track down the Assessor and put his evil to rest once and for all. But first, they must get through the Assessor's henchman, the Infinity Stone-wielding Quantum!

These four issues are a very quick read. Most of the story is action stuff, as Miles and Shift make their way through the Beyond Corporation building. The Assessor's dialogue isn't dialogue so much as computer speak, but his menace has hung over this series for a very long time, so it's nice to see everything come to a conclusion, even if that conclusion is just the springboard for the next storyline.

Also included here is the Miles Morales Annual, which was an Infinite Destinies tie-in. It teams Miles with Amulet, from Ms. Marvel's latest series. It's a decent story, but I think it'd actually have been better to include the Iron Man Annual from the same set of tie-ins, since that actually included the Assessor as well.

On art for three of these five issues is Michele Bandini, who's one of those artists that jumps from series to series and does a great job everywhere, but can't seem to nail down an ongoing series for themselves. Christopher Allen pencils the final issue, and is the current artist going forward, so that's a nice teaser for next time. The annual is by Luca Maresca, who's making his way up the ranks with some solid entries on the PS4 Spider-Man series, as well as some turns on Jason Aaron's Avengers.

Not a particularly dense read, but this is a confrontation that's been a long time coming, and it's cathartic to finally get there.

First 3 issues are great. Watching Miles and his brother fuck shit up, get revenge for what was done for them, and some great art made the first 3 issues fly by but in a meaningful way. Then the issue with the time traveling...ugh. I hate shit like that. Really lowered the score for me. Annual was aite.

A 3 out of 5.

In the last volume of Saladin Ahmed’s run of Miles Morales, Brooklyn’s own Spider-Man has gone through some changes, from not just having a new costume, but has a new crime-fighting partner in the shape of his metamorphic clone, Shift. Along with the thirtieth issue that celebrated the tenth anniversary of Miles Morales, at the end of the last volume is the character received a notice from the Beyond Corporation to stop being Spider-Man, due to Beyond trademarking the name.

Coinciding with The Amazing Spider-Man when it was going through its Beyond run, Ahmed isn’t too concerned about his story tying in with the other Spidey title as the first three issues are essentially Miles and Shift teaming up to finally get revenge on the Assessor. In terms of characterisation, you have the brotherly banter between the characters – with Moles has to function as the older brother to control the “glurp”-saying Shift, who can’t always control his emotions. As one of the most interesting Marvel villains in recent years, the Assessor doesn’t feature that much, but his presence looms large and no doubt have done much pain towards Miles and his clone.

However, the majority of those issues are spent on the action, which allows artists Michele Bandini and Luigi Zagaria to really dazzle. With most of the volume essentially being a slug-fest, it could have been tedious, but Ahmed and the artists come up with fun set-pieces to challenge the Spider-Duo, from armed guards to drones to a room featuring multiple doors that loops. From splash pages to double page spreads, the artists are using various visual tricks that continue to show that Miles Morales is one of Marvel’s most visual stunning titles.

Upon defeating the Assessor, though I hope comes back, Miles discovers that his uncle Aaron is alive and is trapped in another dimension, and so he and Shift go through a dimensional trip from one world that is cowboy-centric to another that features zombies. Whilst we are expecting Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to be released next year, it seems like Ahmed (along with artist Christopher Allen) is doing his own spin on that idea, which is more about playing for laughs than raising the stakes.

Concluding the volume is the first annual of the run, in which Miles investigates a series of monster attacks in Brooklyn, where he runs into Ms. Marvel’s friend and ally, Amulet. Though a decent read, it would perhaps resonate more if you have read Ahmed’s current run of Ms. Marvel. Going back to Miles Morales, this is the weakest volume so far in the run and whilst there is still enough to enjoy, I’m curious about this version of Miles going through his dimensional journey.

The aftermath of Miles' own Clone Saga, which has left him with a sort of knock-off Groot of himself, intertwines with the Beyond story rooted in Peter Parker's own original clone shenanigans, before the story resolves itself (by which I mean, gets to the set-up for the next callback arc) by rushing through the margins of Ahmed's brief Exiles run. There are a few nice moments along the way, like a certain form for a portal device, and the mad science version of Clippy, and it's a quick read in a way that's much better for a library book than would be if I'd forked out for this, but I can't help missing the days when this was a fun book about a teen superhero, rather than mired in the same sort of long, involved and often downbeat material that has often dragged the parent Spidey book down lately.

The thing to remember about this collection is that it's PAYBACK. Miles has taken so much from Beyond Corporation and the 'tests' by the Assessor. He found out he was cloned. Most of those clones died abruptly. Shift is rhe last survivor and is now hiding out and being taken care of by Miles.

Newest problem? He (Miles) was just served cease and desist paperwork for the Spider-Man 'brand'. It seems Beyond Corp own all assets related to the Spider-Man copyright and they want Miles to stop calling himself a 'Spider-Man' immediately. Never one to back down, Miles and Shift (reminding me a LOT of Spidercide) decide to take out Beyond before they get too full of themselves.
---------------
This might be a pretty good jumping on point for people unfamiliar with the title and cast of characters. There isn't much depth to any of it. They find a problem, state the problem, and address the problem. Pretty standard superhero shenanigans.

Bonus: Multiverse mayhem commences! We get characters from previous 'Exiles" work and a cameo from a beloved Spider-verse character.

Bonus Bonus: These 4 issues read super quick. There isn't much here but fighting

Ok Story. Not a fan of Glump. The story with Amulet seemed forced but they might have a cool team up in the future. Read out of order (read before vol 6 accidentally)

Forgot just how nice this new suit is. I adored looking at every panel and I am sad I took such an extended break from reading these volumes!! The full-spread illustrations were really fun and I like seeing Miles and Shift work together to finally tackle the problem of the Assessor.

The short Amulet story at the end was really poignant as well, showcasing the way being a hero is not always going to go how you expect. This whole line is really seeming to hold that theme at its focus - with Miles in this volume trying to teach Shift to not be so rough, while also point-blank saying he wants to kill someone. Perhaps a natural side-effect of him being a teen, but also shows how important it is to be aware of the power you wield.

As always, here’s my disclaimer that I’m incredibly biased as anything Spidey is my long-time favorite, so while other reviews here make excellent criticisms, I simply get too much joy from Spider-Man to not love it.

Spoileeerrrrs my dudes.

English/Spanish review:

Art's so good on this volume. I do like the suit here. All action here was so well drawn.
Miles be rocking that suit now, even though it was too inconsistent, eyes were coming and going from white to red.

Ahmed amended my complain about the bad portrayal of Miles torture. He's still not as traumatized as one would imagine (no one wants that but human mind works that way huh). Like how he bonds with Shift about the torture they both endured on the hands of Asset.

Marvel keeps blue balling all of us with and not serving since 2016. But I'm so sure they'll do on a few issues,I mean THEY'RE ON THE DAMN COVER. I so want to see

Ah,and before it happens. I'm so sure runs Beyond and will be a major event villain. Hope they won't fuck it up.

Overall, this was enjoyable. The stuff with the Assessor has been dragging on, but this last battle was written well and kept you on your toes. Tying it in to this larger, darker Beyond Corporation was interesting and we got a bit more backstory on The Assessor. Though, I kind of hoped we would’ve gotten a bit more on who is actually behind it/what is their motivation/who’s behind the robot and the technology? But, I’m sure that’s to come.

I saw some reviews that didn’t like the fact that this went into another multiverse direction with Miles. I hear that sentiment, but I actually enjoyed it. I like that the dimensions Shift and Miles went to - one being a throwback Western town with a Django-type character helping them find the next portal. It ending with Miles and Shift meeting Ultimatum will hopeful prove to be interesting. Even though these were more plot driven issues, I still like that by the last issue, Miles’ main motivation is to find Uncle Aaron after seeing that he could potentially be alive through The Assessor’s dimensional monitors. I also like the dynamic between Shift and Miles. Reminds me of a Groot and Rocket type relationship given that Shift can only say, “glurp” lol.

Feels like these last few books have been a lot of set-up for larger events or crossover stuff. There have been a lot of notes throughout trying to keep the reader up-to-date on stuff happening in other books. While that makes me feel a little lost, like I don’t have the full context on what is going on, I’m hopeful that Ahmed will tie it up well in his last issue (#42).

Oh, and the Annual was fun and was my introduction to Amulet, who I quite liked. I thought the Thousand Cursed Things tale was interesting and him explaining to Miles (and the reader) how his powers work and what the purpose is and the history of it was impactful.

Starts kinda GREAT...then gets kinda lame.
I loved the idea of Miles and Shift taking the fight TO The Assessor, and all of the catharsis and dealing with trauma that has. I also love where this one ends off, leading up to what we can assume will be the final confrontation between Miles and Ultimatum.
I don't love the Multiverse hopping stuff. Spider-Ham is fun whenever he pops up, sure, but let me tell you about the MANY effs I don't give about cowboy T'challa fighting outlaw Tombstone in the wild west. And then the zombies part moves WAY too fast to be effective at all. I'd have been down for a brief foray into being horror-driven, but this has no interest in that. It's just swinging through the zombies to get to the next thing.
Also, I wish they could have included some of Miles' adventure with Ben Reilly/Peter Parker that provides the context for Beyond Corporation because you definitely wind up feeling like you've missed something.
I'm still pretty in for Ahmed's run overall, this volume is just very hit and miss.

I'm iffy on the annual. I prefer the annuals that are just fun standalones on their own (I think my favorite annual remains the Champions annual that's Ms Marvel reading a bunch of fan fiction), but I don't mind including it as a bonus.

Actually looking forward to seeing how Ahmed's run ends. I'm sure it will seem a little rushed and perfunctory, because comics, but as long as it hits well on some emotional beats, I'm ready for it.

Is it just me, or do you not love Miles' new costume?
Highlights:
- With cloned brother Shift in tow, Miles goes back up against the Assessor and his lackey Quantum. They have found his base and mainframe now, so... once the fight is over... two things happen: 1) Quantum is released from his mind control, making him kind of an ally. Before escaping to go off and combat Beyond Corp, he tells Miles to check out "the black doors". AND 2) As Miles and Shift check that out, they see that Miles' uncle Aaron (better known to us as The Prowler) is off travelling the multiverse and is not dead.
- Thus begins our multiversal romp! 1) An Old West type of environment to fight their Rhino. 2) A brief visit to Spider-Ham. 3) A world of zombies (an absolute must for all Marvel multiverse stories!) 4) A weird world where Ultimatum is.... wait.... Ultimatum? Uh no...
- An added story has Miles teaming up with Amulet against a Cyklops and an evil wizard. Kind of a cool hero, wouldn't mind seeing him again.

While I do like the addition of Shift, this book is becoming a bit repetitive again. I'm not sure what I'd rather see, and I am certainly not going to stop reading the title, but Miles needs the spotlight again soon. Maybe with the new animated movies coming....

Recommend. Miles is always good for a good story.

Miles Morales fights a villain with Ben Reilly over in Amazing Spider-Man: Beyond who Miles finds out is related to the Accessor. Miles and Shift go looking for some payback. Ahmed's Miles run has moved so slowly for me. Three of the four regular issues here are Miles and Shift fighting their way through a building to get to the Accessor. He seems to throw a lot of spinning wheels at readers. the last story is a team-up with Amulet from Ms. Marvel. It's fine just like this whole run has been.

BTW, Miles's new suit is hideous and makes no sense. I can't get a scarf to stay wrapped around my face in the winter while shoveling but he can keep that collar thing tied around his face during a fight.

I’m feeling generous but also this was a solid volume. Shift is a fun and competent side character, the climax of the narrative involving battling the Assessor and Quantum was great and spread across two whole issues. The annual inclusion introduced me to Amulet, who had some nice familial parallels, at least in terms of love and values, to the Morales clan. The writing and art all felt tight and effective, which doesn’t seem to always be the case for even limited windows of this run, so as we get to what feels like might be a shift or hiatus in the Miles comics in the near future, I’m glad to see them rounding into form at least at this stage.

I did blank out on the multiverse crap in the last volume so…I’m knocking some points off for that feeling pointless.

I'm so over the Assessor storyline. I wish we could get some more variance or bring back Starling. I did like the team up in the last issue with Amulet. Kind of wish the whole volume was Amulet, Starling, Miles, and Shift doing a team-up against some cooler villains.

I like these runs to have about 3-volume arcs, wrap things up and planting seeds for the next arc. This whole run so far has been too drawn out. Sometimes that can be a good thing (see: Ms. Marvel or Spider-Gwen) but for the most part pacing of the story needs to be justified. And this run is not looking good unless we get a change of scenery.

Mostly really good. I've enjoyed seeing Miles develop his relationship with Shift, and that's largely what's going on here. There's a link to Beyond, but it's pretty minor and quickly brushed over. Kind of like Ahmed wasn't terribly interested in Beyond, which is fair. I also liked the annual, with Amulet. The reality hopping issue was less successful for me, mostly because it felt sort of rushed. It's fun to revisit over realities, but if you're only there for a couple of pages, it just loses something.

Either Ahmed has run out of ideas, or Marvel wants to make this series like their other bland ones (I assume it's the latter), but this series has taken a nosedive.

As much as I've enjoyed MCU movies, there's always been criticism of 3rd acts that devolve into giant cgi battles, where it's near impossible to tell what's happening. Well, it's even worse when drawn out in comics. A good spidey-fight is fun, but when it's just pages and pages of it, what's the point. Even a rematch with one of the series' great villains couldn't help this "story."

Collects Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2018) issues #33-36, and material from Miles Morales: Spider-Man Annual (2021) #1

This collection is branded with the "Beyond" heading, but Ben Reilly doesn't make an appearance here (Miles does show up in "Amazing Spider-Man's" "Beyond" issues, though.

Here, Miles and Shift encounter the Accessor, and set off on an adventure through the Multiverse. The Annual that's included in this collection features a new hero to me named Amulet, and that issue was solid.

For those old enough to remember CDs (for music, not investment), if you were listening to some great tunes but then there was a scratch on the disc you didn't know about, you'd never hear the rest of that album anymore. Well, this trade paperback collects issues #33-36 (that's just four) and Annual #1. Let's just say that something important must occur in issue #37 yet doesn't really connect with the Annual, but without buying/finding Volume 8, I'd never know. Boo! Up to that point, the action and storytelling were strong, thus the reason for the 3-star rating.

This feels like the author was told pretty suddenly that he needed to wrap up his storyline. So we get a finale for the assessor storyline that was way too abrupt to be satisfactory and then a run through a bunch of alternate dimensions that was similarly too fast to be neat and then a cliffhanger. Meanwhile, we get an annual that introduced a whole new character and didn't fit into the continuity at all. Overall, totally OK but too weighed down by what I presume was editorial mandate to even be good. I read through it more than enjoyed it.

I was hoping this story was going to go somewhere, and then it didn't really. We had another run-in with the Assessor, which was fine and had impactful enough moments. But then we then got a mini-Spider-Verse adventure as he travels around in search of a version of the Prowler. We have no reason to believe it's the "correct" one for Miles but we journey anyway.

I'm again left with the feeling of not really knowing where this book is going to go.

This book had tie ins to other stories going on that I am not reading. So a lot of it was lost on me.
But having said that, the plot and characters felt very overused. Couple of cool moments, and I did like the final issue, but still a bit below average.
The annual issue included was definitely another tie in to a larger event and didn’t make sense continuity wise with the other issues in this book.
Art was okay throughout, I think the best art was in the first half of the annual issue.

Miles and Shift take on the Assessor and the Beyond Corporation then traverse the multiverse on the hunt for uncle Aaron. I love the Miles/Shift relationship and how Miles never underestimates Shift for long. I also enjoyed the annual issue with the Amulet team up. I hope to see more of Amulet as he’s an interesting new hero.

The first few issues were pretty good, with Miles and his clone-brother Shift ("Glurp!") teaming up to take down the Assessor. I wasn't too excited about the dimension-hopping in the next issue. And I know I've read that Amulet story somewhere else, so why was it included again here? Not a fan. The artwork isn't bad.

We go back to the Spider-verse, too soon in my opinion, again. And it's not the actual spider-verse, just small glimpses of it. It's good to finally close the chapter with Assessor. Shift is a nice addition to he story.
