This 2019-2022 incarnation of Spider-Woman feels like yet another wasted opportunity for Marvel to do something decent with the female of the arachnid-powered super-species. It becomes obvious how weak this book is when it is the Devil's Reign crossover issues that are the best in this volume! A series that can't make up its mind if it wants to be an action thriller or a spoofy comedy gets somewhere lost in the middle becoming neither! A 5 out of 12. surely I won't read another season of Spider-Woman Two Star read. 2024 read
I have not read the last 3 volumes of Spider-Woman, but this was still a really fun time for me. I mainly read it for the Devil’s Reign tie-in issue, but I ended up having a pretty fantastic time with the rest of it. I wasn’t too lost throughout as well, but I did have to look up a couple things every once and awhile.
Shame to hear this is the end of the series though, I don’t know why all these female led Marvel books are getting canned so early on during their runs. This run and Thompson’s Black Widow run both feel like they got canned prematurely. I’ll definitely head back at some point and check out the other 3 volumes that I missed because this was seriously dope and way better than I was expecting it to be.
I really enjoyed this one. The art was consistently great and the story was action-packed (except for the ‘non-action issue’, which was my favourite issue in the book) and Karla Pacheco’s writing made me laugh out loud many times (in a good way, people).
Despite the title of the volume, the Devil’s Reign tie-in was pretty minor and didn’t derail the book at all.
My least favourite part of the book was the Secret Invasion callback element, as I’m trying to forget Secret Invasion ever happened.
My favourite part of the book was when Jess called Lady Bullseye ‘Lady Boobs-out’ because, well, somebody had to say it!
I’m upset this is the last volume of this run; I’m really going to miss it.
This one ends in a big fucking battle that's extremely funny but also hits home for a lot of character moments. Basically Jen gets her own group of sinister villains but these guys are idiots. Some really funny moments spark from their arrival to fight our favorite webcrawler, but also Spider-Woman trying to balance being a hero, living her best life, and also being a great mom.
This was a pretty great series, just like the run before it. We need more Spider-Woman in our life. Gives us MORE Marvel!
Devil's Reign comes to Spider-Woman's doorstep when the Kingpin unleashes one of the worst foes Jessica has ever faced not just on her, but her family! Plus, enter the Anti-Arach-Nine, Jessica's version of the Sinister Six!
Guess what? This is fantastic. So you can guess what happens next. Marvel have cancelled it.
Karla Pacheco's particular brand of insanity has been a perfect fit for Jessica's chaotic life, and she manages to infuse these final few issues with just as much as before while also tying into the larger Devil's Reign story, and possibly the darkest story from Jessica's past. I won't reveal the villain of the piece, but suffice to say it's a perfect match.
The final two issues bring the run to a close by bringing back all of Jessica's enemies for one final free-for-all that's packed with even more lunacy and zany sound effects than before. It's a little rushed and a bit messy, but it's a solid conclusion, and leaves the door open for whoever picks up the quill for Jess next.
Pere Perez has pencilled all 21 issues of this series as far as I can remember, and these final few might be his best yet. The Arach-Nine issues are so densely packed with details and dynamic fight scenes, I have no idea how he managed to do it all and keep to a schedule. The Devil's Reign issues are also packed with pathos to go along with the emotional beats that Pacheco tosses into the story. If this run doesn't cement Perez as a top tier artist, I don't know what will.
Spider-Woman has been that little book that could - after every few issues I was worried it would end, but we managed to squeeze 21 amazing issues out of both the creative team and Marvel itself. It's a shame that it has to end, but it's been a delight to have while it lasted.
3.5 Stars. With this Volume, we end the run on Spider-Woman yet again. This run has been pretty good, and I'm not sure why it is stopping. Maybe we can get a Spider Ladies book with all of the popular Spider Women! Highlights: - Still recovering from her fights in the last Volume, Jessica "takes a day off" and goes to visit her friend Lindsay, who is a stuntwoman. Hmmm.... those ninjas aren't supposed to be in this movie.... Bet you can guess what happens next. - We get the tie-in with "Devil's Reign" (still a crossover story I need to read!) here as well. Kingpin has declared war on "costumed vigilantes" and Jessica most likely has trouble coming for her. But why does she have to fight herself? Oh... not Veranke again! This lady is the eternal thorn in Jess's side. (They make for really good fights, but it feels slightly overdone...) - Finally, (thought this was a little weird and silly!) we have Jess facing off against a new team of villains, the Anti-Arach9... made up of all the weird villains that she has fought in this 4 Volume series. LOL they are so basic they aren't even worth mentioning.
I'd like to continue to read Spider-Woman, so I hope it picks back up soon. Maybe give Jessica a nemesis (other than Veranke!) and an important cross into main continuity.
Karla Pacheco's Spider-Woman run wraps up with a lackluster Devil's Reign tie-in and then an all-out, quip-fueled brawl between Spider-Woman and all her former foes. It's, uh, certainly something. If you have a long history with Spider-Woman, I'm sure this volume is hella fun. If you're just passing through, it makes basically no sense.
Maybe the humor just went too over the top for me. I like a little plot and basically any stakes with my quips. This isn't Deadpool. Pere Perez continues to steal the show with his art. I cannot wait to see what he does next.
nooo wayyyy marvel canceled this now when it's finally getting good??? after all the crazy shit from the previous volumes nothing could faze me now. the fisk arc was weird but that fight with veranke!!!! the arachnine thing was ridiculous but i liked it actually... just the right sass i love jessica drew for
Fun on a few different levels, funny in ways that tickle my “oh I didn’t expect it to go there” bone, and satisfyingly true to Jess as a character with a lot of history to integrate into a very flawed human being.
Karla Pacheco, what you up to now? Imma come check you out.
SPIDER-WOMAN: DEVIL'S REIGN is the fourth installment of the 2020 Spider-Woman comic. This is a tie-in with the Devil's Reign storyline (no kidding) and deals with the Kingpin becoming the Mayor of New York. Obviously, the Kingpin loves screwing with Spider-People so he reveals that Veranke is still alive and sets the Skrull queen loose on Jessica Drew. Sadly, they don't develop that plot very much. We do get an absolutely hilarious issue, though, about assembling a team to kill her of her D-listers.
6/10: I started this collection because of the issues tying into the Devil’s Reign event throughout various Marvel Comics, and I’ve gotta say that I really enjoyed it! Truthfully, Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman is one that I haven’t read a lot about, but these five issues have actually made me want to explore the character further, especially with a more coherent and understandable story (and not the final volume of a 21 issue run).
The titular Devil's Reign time-in story wasnt that interesting. Bringing back a villain from a previous event and not doing anything impactful for neither Jess nor the Devil's Reign main arc felt very generic. Also, please no more "they took my baby!" stuff. BUT! The second half was hilarious! I love that after all the grimdark plots Jess got a would be villain group with tons of bad puns and jokes and each page got to a new level of absurdity.
I love Spider-Woman but by the time I got to the Devil’s Reign tie in I’d already checked out on this run. Loved the artwork throughout and the flow of some of the panels were great.
However, I couldn’t get past the lackluster story, villains, and cringe worthy dialogue at times. I also got annoyed with how much Jessica needs to curse even after receiving the cure. Plus, the man she mothers a baby with wanted to get married and suddenly he’s out and it’s like nothing happened. Could have provided some meaningful storytelling and it’s glossed over.
I also didn’t like how Jessica behaves like a teenager when it comes to living life. Like she barely has a clue how to live day to day even though she’s been doing the hero gig for decades.
In the end not all bad but Spider-Woman deserves better.
This comic has been consistently terrific. Even the Devil's Reign tie-in here is minor and can be read without reading the event. The book is just the perfect combination of action and fun. Spider-Woman is hilarious. Jess always refers to Lady Bullseye as "Lady Boobsout". In the final two issues, all of the villains of the entire run team up to try and take her down.
Pere Perez managed to pencil every issue of the series without a break. His art is fantastic. Well choreographed, beautiful fight scenes. Marvel needs to make sure they keep him around. I'm sorry to see this series go, but it was a fun time while it lasted.
I still haven't taken the time to fully explore the whole Devil's Reign comic event, but clearly, this book doesn't really address that story all that much. Similar to how they handled the King in Black story, we just show what Jessica was up to at the time of the event and it seems she's not all that tied to the big stuff. Sure, she gets into a fight with a key character, but having that as her sole contribution felt weird.
And again we have her stuck fighting almost all the time culminating with the last issue in the series being one big free-for-all with most of the antagonists she's been facing across the series run in another mindless fight issue.
This entire series made me absolutely happy. I didn’t know a thing about Spider Woman before, I mean, other than seeing her here or there, over an Avenger book, seeing her working for Hydra at some point(???), or just standing there. But focusing on her, this was a first. And just like that, she became my favorite Marvel character!11111 So, my unending love to Karla Pacheco and Pere Perez. They built perfection!
Once again, Pere Perez's art is the only thing keeping this book from a 1 star rating. Karla Pacheco shows that's she's not a comic book writer. She switches tones completely in this volume as something that should have been intensely emotional comes off as lame and then she goes full zany Deadpool. This book has been a joke in the worst way. Pacheco writes every hero as Spider-Man and no villain being able to take serious but then realizes this and tries to write Deadpool. This was shame.
This collection is the finale for this run of "Spider-Woman," so there are a lot of callbacks to stories from earlier in this series, as well as to Jessica Drew's personal history.
I think I liked the one before more but I liked how it was liked the battle. Kinda reminded me of the last level of a video game. Just wish she would use her zap powers more or in different ways other than punches.
