A 40-day devotional experience inspired by MercyMe’s best-selling album, inhale (exhale) follows the sixteen-track record to create a path for readers to breathe in and absorb God’s grace in their lives.
Inspired by MercyMe’s album of the same name, inhale (exhale): A 40-Day Journey Breathing in Grace and Living Out Hope follows the sixteen-track record to create a path for readers to breathe in and absorb what God can do, and then release His spirit of grace by offering hope in the world.
The heart of this devotional is found in two days of entries, an “inhale” day and an “exhale” day, designed to coincide with each song as readers work their way through the album and devotional. Each entry ties to a particular song and couples those thoughts and lyrics with scripture passages, application questions, meditative verses, prayers, and space to journal. These entries

It’s been hard to go to that place, but I love the results when I do. For the first time, with inhale (exhale) it was more about other people’s stories than mine. I was writing out of something that I witnessed more than I experienced myself.”
Netgalley gave me an advance-review copy of this book, and I only realized after I received it that it was Christian-based and had been written to accompany the 12th studio album by a Christian contemporary band out of Oklahoma called Mercy Me.
Although the band just celebrated its 20th anniversary, I have never heard their music and am not Christian, so I am definitely *not* the audience for this book -- but I still thought it was inspiring and well-written. The language was direct, authentic and heartfelt. If you are Christian and looking for advice on learning to love yourself, on having faith, on letting go of the past, and taking other sensible self-caring measures, this would be a great book for you. If you are a fan of the band Mercy Me, you will surely love this book. And if you've never heard of Mercy Me, this book might inspire you to go give their music a listen.
I enjoyed going with MercyMe on their journey of daily inhaling God's grace! Bart brings much of the power of his own story and walk with Christ into the band's book. It's a nice hardcover edition with glossy pages that lie flat with lined sections for reflecting. Each devotional is a couple pages long, grounded in Scripture with anecdotes from different band members and thoughtful questions. I especially liked the short prayers at the end that are designed to get your day started with a simple breath and focus on God. I'm giving a copy to a friend in the hospital to encourage them.
A great devotional based off of an album! Definitely a great foundation that has inspired me both creatively as a writer and spiritually as a Christian.
I wish more Christian bands would follow this concept. This was an enriching opportunity to get an in-depth look at what went into the lyrics of each song, and to learn how Scripture and real-life experiences during the pandemic inspired the compilation of this album. Very well done!
Thank you, NetGalley, for an e-ARC of Inhale (Exhale): A 40-Day Journey Breathing in Grace and Living Out Hope by MercyMe. A simple devotion encourages the reader to find comfort in life's journeys knowing that faith gives hope. Written during the pandemic, MercyMe band members recorded their source for hope in times of confusion. Each day includes personal thoughts, scripture, questions to ponder, and a prayer. The concept of 40 days makes this an excellent book for Lent.
Update- I didn't finish it before the concert, and it took me longer than 40 days, but it was worth every moment. I enjoyed hearing the message behind each song that was written and the connections to their lives and God's word.
Beautifully written! My goal is to finish it by March 25 because I will be going to their concert for their Inhale-Exhale tour!!
2022 did not start out anything like I had planned .. adjusting to a seasonal layoff from work just two days prior to Christmas 2021, developing Covid on January 2nd, and leaving a small church membership after having tried to stay the course and fit in for approximately 3 years.
Then I settled in for a re-read of this devotional .. a true blessing. I had been gifted a copy of both the Kindle version, along with the album.
inhale ( exhale ) is a 40 day journey unlike any other. You will receive hope, healing, strength, comfort and His love.
This set has a permanent place in my faith library. Will also be recommending and gifting copies .. often.
This book was a great way to help me refresh my spiritual life and look at where I am right now. If you want to grow in your walk with Christ I suggesting that you read it too.
I loved this devotional. Each day was something new that encouraged me or challenged me to dig deeper in my faith. These forty days have definitely been a journey that I'm so grateful I was on. I know that I learned a lot from these forty days, and God showed me a lot about who I am as a person.
Great read for daily devotional. Loved the three simple reflection questions to journal each day. Also appreciated insight into mercy me. Really enjoyed this, took my time working through it.
