Celebrity Superhero

Rate this book
When Anna Eom isn’t reading fantasy novels, she’s obsessing over her favorite K-pop group, SUPER. Each boy in the group has a different superpower, but Sungwook stands out from the crowd with his super-speed and super-strength, not to mention his super-hotness.

The day that SUPER’s latest music video drops, Anna’s mom does the worst thing imaginable and cuts the wi-fi to make her clean house instead. All because some old family friends are visiting them from Korea. Not only are the almost-strangers cutting her time short with her favorite K-pop group, but she knows she’s going to be thrown together with a boy she only remembers as a bully.

Caleb might be her age, but the last time she saw him ten years ago he stole her precious Disney princess necklace. What’s worse is Anna’s mom has threatened to clear her bookshelves if she doesn’t greet the old friends at the door with a fragile vase as a gift.

Anna complies, planning on getting back to her books as soon as she can, but when her parents open the door it’s not Caleb standing on the other side, but Sungwook from SUPER. Judging by the way he caught the vase she dropped with lighting speed, his super-powers might not be fiction.

Anyone who knows me know that I love a fun celebrity romance. This one is definitely unique with the whole K-pop thing. Actually, this is a fun twist in and of itself because I've been hearing a ton about K-pop with the Olympics going on. For anyone who doesn't know what K-pop is, it's short for Korean pop. It's a fun blend of addictive tunes, fun choreography, and is pretty much global, even if you don't understand the words. Picture boy bands, girl groups--good looking people singing and dancing and having fun with fluffy pop music.

Anna is Korean and has lived her whole life in Oregon, but she's K-pop obsessed, especially with the group SUPER. Imagine her surprise when one of the band members turns out to be her old childhood friend, back for a visit with his parents.

Anna is hilarious and so are the misunderstandings involving her! Her vivid imagination kept me smiling. She's feisty, snarky, yet sweet, all wrapped up in a small package. Her obsessions are easy to relate to, but she's got her head in the clouds. Caleb is an enigma and his secret nearly drove me crazy, as the reader isn't privy to that until Anna is. I had no idea what craziness he was mixed up in.

The romance had me baffled. With a possible love-triangle, I felt a little like a yo-yo, trying to decide if it was happening or not and with whom. I was caught by surprise at the suddenness of the decision that was finally made.

Although slightly unrealistic, this story was a lot of fun and highly entertaining. I'll be looking for more by this new-to-me author.

Content: mild romance; mild violence

Celebrity Superhero by Jennie Bennett is a cute romantic comedy. The story is in first-person and is told from Anna, a young K-pop listening, manga reading, fangirl's point-of-view.

The story is a fun easy read and is filled with humor, romance and even a bit of action.

Recommended to those who like K-drama, K-pop, cute romances, and romantic comedies

I don’t know anything about K-pop, but I got this book for free a few days ago. The reviews on Amazon were all great, and I was enjoying the cute story. That is, until things started getting a bit ridiculous and unbelievable. Besides that, the last few chapters or so also felt very rushed, with the story jumping all over the place.

Oof.... oof.... oh boy....

Listen, I went into this knowing it wasn't going to be good. But I was hoping it was going to be like Riverdale - terrible but at least hilariously entertaining... but unfortunately, it was just straight up bad.

I am truly over this ridiculous obsession we have in America with boys being possessive and mean to girls because "they like them" and that being viewed as attractive. It's not. Full stop. Toxic masculinity is NOT attractive and I'm so sick of it being romanticized. I get particularly upset when female authors do this. Just stop it. Stop romanticizing terrible behavior in men.

And Anna.... sigh... oh lord have mercy, if I could slap her I would. Her ridiculous meltdown and spiraling depression when she and then he laughs about it was.... yikes. Holy crap. Sure, would someone be embarrassed by that? Yes... but her "omg I'm such a terrible person. I'm so ignorant and selfish! Why would Caleb EVER want to speak to me again!" and then is tearing up her books over it??? Yeah that was so over the top and... to be honest... aggravating. I was very angry. Sure, she's a teen... but like.... yikes. To spiral so madly and dramatically in that way over something so silly.... I really don't like the message that sends. Truly.

I know this book is fiction, yes... but there are a handful of ridiculous things... starting with the fact that Caleb's group just had a comeback and he's allowed to take a week long family vacation the day the music video comes out? Yeah... no... he's going to have a jam packed schedule that week promoting the new single on all the music shows.

The book redeemed itself a little bit at the end when it got to what I thought the book would be - terrible but entertaining. I laughed a bunch at the situation and cheesy lines. This is what I was expecting from this book. I wish the rest of the book could have been more like this rather than the toxic masculinity dumpster fire it was.

Will I read some more of Jennie Bennett's k-pop romance books? Probably. Hopefully they'll be more Riverdale (terrible but entertaining) and less Twilight (straight up garbage)

Celebrity Superhero was a fun, sweet romance story. I liked watching the relationship develop between Anna and Caleb and the struggles that they went through. Anna was so spunky and determined to help Caleb no matter what. The action/danger thrown in with the people out to get Caleb added excitement to the story.

The only thing I didn't care for in the story was the substitute swear words. I know that using "dang" instead of the "d-" word, "crap' instead of "sh-", "gosh" instead of "g-d" is how authors keep from actually including swearing in a book but the words distracted from the story for me. I think the worst one for me was the many variations of "freak" which is just a substitute for the f-bomb. I still enjoyed the story and am planning to read the others in the series but I would like to encourage the author to consider less of this sort of language in future books.

Sex: One or two sweet kisses
Language: "dang", "crap", "freakin", "gosh" used throughout story
Violence: a little bit of blood from minor injuries
Religion: none

What a great story. I really liked this one. I laughed and groaned through the whole book that I sat and read in one setting. I couldn't put it down as I had to see what happened next and what crazy thing Anna would think Caleb could do next. Have to say I could see why Anna thought Caleb had powers. I thought it was well written and Anna a hoot. Gotta love teenagers and their love of kpop stars. My honest review is - a great quick clean story about teenagers that made me laugh and have to see how it ended. There was a tough of mystery/supernatural (Anna thought Caleb really had superpowers after all) along with very funny scenes. I loved reading Anna's thought as the week Caleb was visiting went by.

Anna and Caleb are pretty well-developed characters, given the limited space Ms. Bennett is working with. There's great push-and-pull between them and I love that flustered Anna finally finds her feet. Rounding out the story is an obnoxious childhood friend, a dance-off with sasaengs, and a satisfying amount of character growth. Definitely worth a read!

I thought this was a very enjoyable, entertaining quick read. Anna and Caleb were cute and sweet; very likable. I found the storyline interesting and it kept me reading straight through, wanting to see how it was going to play out. I definitely liked the way it concluded and I enjoyed the humor and personality expressed by the characters along the way!

This was EXACTLY what I would expect from something that says k pop right on the cover. I'm not a fan of k pop - I think it's kind of ridiculous. This book was kind of ridiculous, too, but it was entertaining. This would be good for young girls who like k pop.
Note: I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways.

Kilig!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️

Kilig is a Filipino word. Look it up and you will see why it fits this book! There are so many kilig moments from beginning to end!

I didn’t think too much about detail until after I read the reviews. So as I read I kind of skipped over how old they are and focused on their kilig moments :)

A cute k-pop romance! I had a lot of fun reading about the relationship between Anna and Caleb. I liked it so much I would’ve loved the book to be longer so I could see more- a slower development in their relationship and more standing in the way. But I had a great time reading this in one sitting.

What a fun fluff piece! Anna was so oblivious through it all I loved it. She’s always in her own little daydreaming world lol and that literally slips into her reality.
Really cute towards the end.

Also justice for forward-Shawn 😂
He’s always left out. So much that Anna had no idea who he was even

Jennie Bennett has done it again! This installment of her Kpop series is just as fun to read as the others. What's a girl to do when her childhood friend turns out to be her grown up fantasy? This book was a fun and quick read and I can't wait for more from this author!

Sweet, fun K-POP adventure!!

This was such a sweet and fun read! I loved how K-pop was a central theme along with the ideas of truly knowing someone. It was clean, I'd rate it PG mostly for some violence from crazy K-pop fans.

I had no expectations when I picked up this book--wasn't even sure what Kpop was although I've seen manga. But I was sucked right into the storyline and characters and raced right through this tale of teen dreams and hot music. I strongly recommend this fun, fast-paced novella.

I'm actually kind of embarrassed to admit I read this and liked it. Definitely super fan-girly. Totally unrealistic romance. However, it was sweet and cute, and perfect for all those tweens who fangirl over singing groups.

A fun fast read about a girl whose ultimate bias kpop idol ends up being her childhood friend. How trippy is that? Turns out, really really trippy in more ways than one!

Anna is hilarious. I really enjoyed this read. Fans of kpop and kdramas would enjoy this novella, but for fans of funny and light romance fiction, they would love this too.
