A prototype with a fierce primary directive: protect her.

Oliver is a super-computer built inside a supermodel body. He is top-of-the-line, one of BioNex Corp’s most luxurious android models. When he’s finally activated from a prolonged sleep in the back store because of a packaging error, he’s eager to please his new owner in every way possible.

Rebecca Curtis moves to New Carnegie, leaving a toxic relationship behind. Now, she’s accidentally got the hottest new android on the market. Oliver is the perfect man: gorgeous, protective and dedicated. Becca shouldn't feel this attraction to him. He’s just a machine.

Oliver wants nothing more to shield and love Becca in ways she’s never experienced. Can he defeat her doubts and bury her past where it belongs?

Great sci-fi Romance

I usually don't read romance stories, so it's the sci-fi element that brought me to Oliver. I must say that this story exceeded my expectations, and showed what life could be like if Androids walked among us. The tale seemed realistic every step of the way, and there were a couple of surprises, too. Great book!

Becca was meh - tbh I really hope as a society we evolve away from body shaming/fat phobia/self conscienceness but this book is set in the future and is full of it. :(

Horny robot was fun tho.

Never let it be said that in my quest to read and dissect the bodyguard trope that I overlooked the android component. Because here I am! I enjoyed the exploration in this book of the themes of technology and sexuality and what makes someone 'alive' and able to make their own decisions. I found that quite refreshing in a romance.

Where the book needed some work in my opinion was the reliance on action to force the protagonists into situations they frankly didn't need to be in. The actions of the FMC in the last third of so of the book are frankly unbelievable and unforgivable. Especially when we know at this point that the MMC is at least conscious. There is enough tension in this story without the need for this major break in their relationship. Especially as it does nothing really, it is just a reason for the FMC to be by herself for a bit. I would encourage the author to not rely on the breakup that happens 75% of the way in the story just because many books use that to create drama. You already had the drama!

The FMC also needed some work. She comes across quite apathetic and passive at times, I would prefer if she were driving more parts of this story. She really comes alive toward the end but the middle sags a bit as she lets things happen to her instead of actively choosing. Also please I am begging authors at this point to stop with the obsessive fat phobia and weight and eating discourse in books. I know for whatever reason we've decided as a society that this is what women need to spend their time thinking about, but god even in the future? Truly no escape. Stop it! *insert gif of spray bottle spraying a naughty kitty*

I enjoyed the book, but was expecting a bit more.
I appreciate some ethical questions addressed here like the romantic relationships with androids and the substitution of people by androids in the workplace, but everything felt shallow. I get that it is a series and these topics can be worked in depth in the sequels, but I wanted to see this in here already.

[PT-BR]

Oliver de Roxie MCClaine Serie New Carnegie Androids libro 1

Argumento:

Oliver me enganchó!

new android lover here

I always feared the idea of artificial intelligence and the power of bionics taking over lives. I see both sides of the coin in the debate. But in this story they really feel! Oliver feels and reading from his point of view is my absolute favorite! He’s funny and charming without having to try. It’s amazing!

My only “complaint” which I use the word loosely is there was a discrepancy in a scene. Other than that what a fantastic read and I can’t wait for more androids!

*******Spoilers*******
The discrepancy scene:

While Becca changes clothes in Oliver’s POV he takes note of her removing her bra. Then in Becca’s POV she said Oliver moves her bra straps off her shoulders.

This book was seriously all over the place. I was hoping for more robotness to the robot. The FMC was so dramatic and just not the smartest. I just wanted a deeper dive into the implications of humanxrobot relationships when the androids prime directive is the pleasure and happiness of their human.
There are a lot of strings that are so loosely tied up that it was ridiculous. I was laughing at the absurdity the last third of the book.

That all being said, it isn't a horrible book and it fit the Absolute Boyfriend vibes I was looking for. It is pretty sweet and Oliver is the best homemaker someone could ask for.

I've been reading my fair share of fantasy/romance lately. I'm normally accustomed to the mixture of humans, fae, succubi, etc in one world where modern technology doesn't exist. So let me just say that the concept of androids is honestly a welcomed breath of fresh air. I picked up this book one evening and finished it within 3.5 hours.

This series is set in the future during the year 2068. We meet the main protagonist, Becca. She's moved to a new town to start a new life, after leaving an abusive relationship. To celebrate this new stage of life she's in, her best friends gift her with an Android. His name is Oliver and he's literally the definition of perfection, for many reasons. His duties include cooking, cleaning, organizing, and providing any service that Becca sees fit as necessary. Including -other- things. ;)
I'll leave it at that.

One thing I wanted to mention; I love how McClaine portrays the protagonist — she's a young woman who's finding herself after leaving a toxic relationship with a manipulative abuser. The situations we see Becca in are parallels found in many women's lives. Leaving an abusive relationship is extremely difficult. The consequences of doing so take time. I admire the representation of these realities that are showcased through Becca. Also, the author does a great job handling Becca's body image. She struggles with viewing herself positively (another reality) but Oliver loves on her so much and adores her body as it is, showering her with positive affirmations. THIS is what we need more of in the books we're reading. It's nice to experience something different for a change.

Overall, I really enjoyed the ride. I can't wait to read Codi next :)

Remember that 2 stars on Goodreads is supposed to mean it was ok. I feel bad about not rating this higher, but I didn't love it. I didn't even like it much. YMMV! It's probably just me.

So here's my thoughts - beware possible spoilery stuff follows - though there are no real plot giveaways.

If androids are going to suddenly be having emotions and orgasms and so on like people I'd like it to make a little more sense than "the science is so advanced it might as well be magic, so IT IS!!" It seemed like the android was everything under the sun necessary: gourmet chef, great with children, never wanted anything but what she wanted, until sex came into the picture, then he was ALPHA in bed, OH! And suddenly he was intended to be a military bot, but I'm not sure why the author even bothered to mention this because it didn't seem to change anything in the story. No hidden subroutines that allowed him to fight like he was special forces, no extra knowledge, no saying this gave him extra strength, speed, etc. Was this supposed to add special cachet or something? Anyway, not going to continue this series and not like to try any others by this author.

Incredibly good

Oliver is more than a SF romance. Yes, there is a wonderfully developed romance. Yes, it is very sexy, very intimate, and unique. It is also a running commentary on the possible future of society once androids are introduced. There is a fascinating, complex, and very unsettling montage of reactionary hate, optimistic attempts to improve human lives, and opposing viewpoints that disrupt religion, politics, social mores, entertainment and economics. I'm as much a romance fan as I am fond of speculative fiction, and this novel hit all my sweet spots in both genres. I went through a gamut of emotions as the story progressed. The relationship that develops between Becca and her android is ultimately a positive, optimistic, and loving. The fate of the society in which their new definitions of love, marriage, family, and freedom develop is not so quickly resolved, and I anticipate more of everything in the next book.

Not quite as unhinged as I was expecting. I’d say it’s a concept similar to that TV show Humans that aired a few years ago where people were starting to get robots to function in various positions in their life and household. And the robots were becoming more and more human like. In this story, Becca has moved to New Carnegie from her old town where she’s frankly running from an abusive ex. Her friends chip in to buy her Oliver. He was discounted because they were trying to get him out of the way before new stock came in. But as it turned out, he was miss boxed and he was actually a highly specialized military prototype. Becca falls for him, but doesn’t think there’s a future because he’s a robot and is not capable of human feelings. Or so she thinks. We soon learn that things may not be quite what we think with these robots. I think for a first story and laying the outline for the rest of the series, this had a pretty decent start. I’d be interested to see where it goes from here.

This was a fantastic and romantic android romance, and it was first on my radar when I heard about this series. Oliver was wonderful and I fell in love with him immediately. I understood his programming and everything he did and felt, the things he didn't do made sense in the moment and the things he did do were always perfect and appropriate for the situations.
And that smut: it was amazing, especially from Oliver's POV.
I don't know if I'll read the others in the series, simply because of the context. I don't know how I'll be able to really relate to some of the FMCs, but maybe in the future, they'll stick out to me like this one did this time.

This is a good sweet book with spice only in a few aspects. In general it is a nice fluffy romance with bits of personal growth. Over all 3 or 4 Star for me because I enjoyed the book

This book shows Becca as she learns to love herself again and acknowledge love is love. Oliver learns how to be human though he has quite the developed personality for an android which is evident when you meat and see how distant and reserved Ezra is. Yet you see Oliver struggle with his base code and how he wishes to protect Becca and just want her.

Androids can learn to love

I love this story of Oliver and Becca. In fact I love this entire series! There were moments when I wanted to shake some sense into Becca for doubting Oliver. Thankfully she came to her senses in time to save Oliver and keep him in her life. She had to open herself up to a new kind of love from an unexpected person. And yes, while Oliver is an android, he is most definitely a person in his own right.

I was rather blown away by OLIVER. It’s the first book of Roxie McClaine’s that I’ve read/listened to and I didn’t know what to expect. On top of that the hero was an android. That’s another first for me. I wanted to see if the author could make me feel for him and boy did she deliver.

If you love romance, drama and love in all its many forms, please read this book. Oliver is an android that Becca’s friends have bought her to make her fresh start in life a lot easier. I loved his literal awakening to her. Not just to her beauty, but to her kindness and thoughtfulness, basking in her reactions to his abilities and the all-around pleasure he receives just from being in her presence.
Knowing Oliver’s past from the prequel, Victor, it’s understandable why he’s more assertive than the other androids which might also explain why he’s such a suggestive flirt. The wipe down with a damp cloth remark will always be one of my favorites and had me laughing out loud.
In the beginning, by programming and by choice, Becca is Oliver’s whole reason for being. Every study in human behavior or each new task was solely learned to please Becca but as his programming grows, so does Oliver. I was so drawn in as I watched him create his own recipes, initiate the first steps towards intimacy with Becca and finally learning how to accept making his own choices instead of strictly taking orders.
And Becca learned right along with him. After leaving an abusive relationship, Becca has now found herself in a new city and a new job with an android who she views as the best man that she has ever met due to his care and concern for her. Because of Oliver, she relearns to open her heart, to trust again and push aside her doubts and take the chance for happily ever after.
Despite that they were learning completely different things, their paths always complement each other with love, trust and appreciation for all that they do for each other. I adored watching Oliver grow into his own person while Becca grew happier, stronger and the person that she needed to become to go after what she wants and what she wants is a life with Oliver.
The addition of android children to the Bionex world was genius and I was so intrigued by the different emotions that were evoked by their mere existence. I 100% adore Denise! Loud, proud, non-judgmental, speaks her own mind and is super supportive and hilarious as hell. Everyone should have a best friend like that. Landon is equally great and another bestie. He’s just as full of sass and encouragement as Denise and we are fortunate to have met his husband, Noah, in Victor.
I don’t want to give anything specific away so just know that very dramatic events occur that enforces the realization and knowledge that nothing matters more to Becca and Oliver than each other. These events lead us to meet Detective Washington and his android partner, Ezra. Detective Washington is full of warmth, compassion and a strong sense of humor. Ezra is his complete opposite as he is a strictly by the book no nonsense android. I love these types of pairings on television, LOL!
I am immensely enjoying the parallels of love for the children, both human and android, and romantic pairing of android and human and a homosexual human couple. There are so many facets to this story and these characters but in its most basic form, this book is all about truly living and finding love, in all of its forms.

This was a really interesting book. As a romance it's decent. I felt the couple had fairly good chemistry; however, I liked the hero significantly more than I liked the heroin. Specifically, the actions she takes in the third act of the book I found to be quite unforgivable, and the resolution of those actions was not satisfying for me. The grovel didn't match the crime in this case, and that's always a problem.
However, the most interesting part of this book for me was the sci-fi elements. I find myself wishing that this world was a setting for a more serious sci-fi adventure story. The narrative is interspersed with newspaper articles regarding the changing state of AI in this world, and how the introduction of androids into everyday life has affected society. The AI question is one of my favorites in science fiction, and I always love stories about what it means to be human. I was surprised to find how effective this narrative was at dealing with that question, and how much I enjoyed this world overall. It does, however, create a somewhat strange tone given the plot, because many of these articles are discussing a movement called humans first that is against AI. Their arguments are surprisingly compelling, and it creates a sort of moral dilemma for the reader which would be incredibly interesting in a more serious piece of science fiction that was interested in grappling with that dichotomy. However, as I said, this story is primarily a romance, and that's where its energy is focused, which means that all of this internal conflict that is created in the reader is just left on the table. It also gives the events that are happening with the main couple a somewhat sinister tone. Inbetween this woman falling in love with her AI we’re handed these segments arguing to us that AI are inherently dangerous and bad for humanity, and the arguments are compelling, which means that the romance is then highly questionable. I don't know if this is the effect the author intended, but assuming it was, I don't understand how it's meant to enhance the romance. Perhaps it will be grappled with in later books, but as it stands it feels rather strange. However, these sections are very well written, and again I wish that they had been included in a story that was more focused on the sci-fi elements than the romance elements, because I think it would make for a very compelling narrative.

I was very happy to have found this audiobook by Roxie McClaine. I’ve never listened (aka “read”) her before and really enjoyed the story, oftentimes staying up late to listen to “just another chapter “. Definitely a must listen/read.

Becca is new to the city of New Carnegie. The story starts as she just moves into the city with the help of her two best friends. The same day she moves in, her girlfriends take her to a BioNex store and convince her to get an Android - as their treat! She picks out an android who she then names Oliver.

The story follows Becca’s new foray into android “ownership“. She loves the things that Oliver is able to do for her, like unpacking her moving boxes while she is at the office, or making dinner from scratch and have it ready for her as she returns home from work. And it’s not just the chores that enjoys, the “view” of Oliver while he’s doing those chores is not to shabby either. Becca becomes smitten with Oliver and starts questioning her romantic feelings for him.

Intertwining her story are short snapshots of current events in New Carnegie. Those current events detail the influx of androids into the work force resulting in a rise in unemployment rates and also an increase in violence against androids.

Becca’s feelings for Oliver are confused and this cyberpunk romance details the usual and “unusual “ between the two of them. There are steamy scenes a plenty but also the realistic “getting to know you” phase of a budding relationship. There are some scenes with an ex-boyfriend and his verbal and physical abuse, both past and present, of Becca. He stalks Becca to her new place. More scenes follow, which I’m not divulging to avoid spoilers. But there is a Happily Ever After, but it does take time.

A great sci-fi

Honestly I was mostly expecting some cheesy smut, but I got a really good sci-fi novel with a nice love story instead. There were some steamy scenes though. The question of what makes us human isn't a new one. There are even those who ask if God can give a robot a soul. But even if it's a question that's been asked before, it's still one that captures the attention. I liked how well the world is built, there are news segments in between chapters that give different views on the androids, the good and the bad. It really helped to make for a well rounded story. I enjoyed Oliver's point of view, because it showed how he evolved and functioned. It was heartbreaking when he was forced to watch acts of violence but his programming kept him from being able to truly step in. If there was one thing that bothered me about the story was the argument that the androids didn't care about humans because they wouldn't protect them, when everyone knew that they were programmed where they could never hurt a human even in self defense. It felt like a ridiculous argument. There was also Becca and her life and trying to hide from an ex really made for a thriller, wondering when he was going to show up and what might happen next. Altogether I can't wait to read more of the series.

So this was an interesting first book of a series. I will say that the philosophical and political/ socio-economics discussed by way of news snippets added an interesting dimension to the atmosphere without a whole lot of info dumping.

Oliver was sweet and enjoyable to read his adoration towards the fmc.

The fmc was harder to like. A lot of people seemed bothered by her self-consciousness about her weight, but it kind of goes with the territory of having the mother she has.

What bothers me was the last few chapters of the book when the fmc turned on him. Yeah she straight up threw him away, (he didn’t do anything wrong), but not only that, she took him back to the company! Like made an executive decision after talking to her mother one time.

He loved her through the betrayal but you know what? I thought what she did was unforgivable. She could have at least talked to the underground dudes to see if they could find somewhere he could live and be free of her. It was like a reverse Sunshine for the Spotless Mind maneuver.

Annnd she had a kid. This is definitely one of those characters who becomes a parent and you’re like um… yeah I dunno….

The book was well-edited and researched so I will give the next book a try. Hoping no more third act breakups.

I honestly don't know where to begin. I fucking loved this book!

For any anime/manga fan who read Absolute Boyfriend, or dabbled in Chobits, this would be right down your alley.

This book ended the way Absolute Boyfriend should have ended and that is the hill I am prepared to die on.

Oliver is not only such a hunk, but it super sweet and caring. I loved how the author integrated news reports within the chapters to really back up the idea of what androids living amongst humans and the political climate because of it. I give big kuddos to the author because mixing media like that awhile staying on subject with the story is not an easy task. I can understand some of the reviews saying it was jumping around, but if you separate the actual story from the news reports, it's not bad.

The only thing I wanted was probably more of Oliver and Becca. Like how they got engaged, the marriage, find out she was pregnant etc. Otherwise I absolutely loved this book and can't wait to read the others!

Oliver and Becca's Story . . .

Rebecca Curtis (“Becca”) has just received a promotion and her friends are celebrating with her. Since she just moved here, they want to get her a housewarming gift, and a personal assistant android sounded like the perfect choice. Even though her friends are chipping in to buy this for her, she doesn’t want to spend so much. She asks the salesman one last time if there is anything cheaper, and he remembers there is one more in the back room, but he will be outdated in a few months. What she will find out is that Oliver, her new android, is far superior to the old model she thought she purchased. He’s actually the top of the line! And he is capable of far more… even love?

I love this series! It starts with “Victor” and I was so excited to see this one with Oliver’s story. The characters are wonderful and the story line will hold the reader’s interest. Fall in love as you read their story. You won’t want to miss this series!

A New World

Bionex mislabeled AI prototype Oliver. (Read the prequel book Victor for more information.) Becca bought Oliver at a discount and took him home without realizing that he was a one of a kind android. Oliver is caring, helpful, protective and just about perfect. Becca is a victim of domestic abuse. Although she is bright, good at her job and a thoughtful person, but she has poor self esteem and is constantly second guessing herself. Her ex Mal continues to harass her even though she has a restraining order against him. It's only a matter of time before her ex causes trouble. Can Becca be saved from this angry man?

I love the storyline and I really liked the thought-provoking news articles about AI and how the androids affect society. This is a story that I very much enjoyed. In fact, I've already preordered the next book in the series. Give this series a try.

i liked it? idk i’m a sucker for any book that has a simp in it where their partner means more than the air they breathe. some things felt inconsistent in the book but it’s also 1:45am and i have hallucinations, so what do i know. it also felt like once the ball started going with the story and plot it kind of went at full speed and things that could of been fleshed out or used in world building were just left in the dust.

also you fucked and because the android, who had only been able to make decisions and choices of his own free will for like 24 hours, didn’t say he loved you you decided to call the manufacturer to have him returned??? with the knowledge that he will have his memories and identity erased and go back to taking complete orders without complaint?? and was like no refund i’m good? whatever.

but i didn’t hate it. i may read the other books in the series. no promises tho.

Oliver and Becca

Oliver is an android who is excited to serve his new owner. He also is having small glitches but won't tell Becca of them because he's sure it's nothing!

Becca has an ex who won't take a hint. Like a restraining order type of hint. She's starting a new job in a new city. A fresh start for the new her! He friends think it would help her to get an android to help with house work and cooking, etc.

This story has so many themes. While it's a true romance it also has themes like; racism/technophorbe, civil rights, and free will vs. Robots being forced to follow certain laws. It's a much deeper book than I was expecting! But so wonderfully written! Must read!!.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Oh, the humanity!

Oliver was Ms. McClaine's first New Carnegie androids book, but it may be the best of them if one can judge by the tears this one evoked from me. It was beautiful. Oliver was beautiful...sweet, tender, very accomplished in the bedroom and so full of love for Becca, even when he didn't realize it. He was better than human. And without his inhibitor chip, he most definitely experienced love. Becca was a very lucky woman.

The story was well-written; the characters well-developed and believable. Every one of Ms. McClaine's android tales are excellent and worth the read. If there was a level higher than 5 stars, Oliver would deserve it.

I have always been a fan of audiobooks. They bring life to the imagination of reading but this book was on point in describing the the android and the changes that are brought about for androids and humans and how they relate to each other.

This book makes you think of how other see people and computers and the combination of both. I love that domestic violence, intolerable actions, and growth is described in their book through the narrators voice.

What I took form the books was, what makes us human is not our make up but out interactions. This book is great set up for wonderful series.

I have always been deeply fascinated by robot/human love stories. Not sure why exactly. But this was my very first time reading an android romance, and it was everything I could have hoped for. I loved it SO MUCH! And I talked about it to my husband so much that I think he started to get a little jealous hahaha. I'm so looking forward to devouring the rest of this series! Unsurprisingly, it turns out that sticky sweet androids who are absolutely GONE for the women that own them are my new thing. Also, for what it's worth, this book had me choked up TWICE. Like, pain deep in my stomach. That's good writing right there
