An impromptu decision to spend Christmas with their cousin at Hunsford Parsonage puts the Bennet family into Lady Catherine de Bourgh's orbit—and reunites two people who thought they'd said their last farewell: Mr Darcy and Eliabeth Bennet.
When a desire for family brings Colonel Fitzwilliam and Georgiana down to Kent to round out the party, will Christmas magic spell romance for more than one couple this festive season?
Christmas in Kent is a sweet, festive variation on Jane Austen's classic Pride and Prejudice.
Meg Osborne is an avid reader, tea drinker and unrepentant history nerd. She writes sweet historical romance stories and Jane Austen fanfiction, and can usually be found knitting, dreaming up new stories, or on twitter @megoswrites
Jane and Lydia are married. The rest of the Bennets visit Hunsford. Darcy decides to spend Christmas in Kent, not knowing that the Bennets will be there too. Georgiana and the Colonel are added to the mix and there might be some romance for Mary as well.
Imagine Mr. Bennet taking the entire family to Kent to spend Christmas with Mr.and Mrs. Collins to evade the newly married Wickhams. The newly married Bingleys are in London enjoying the social whirl. Poor Georgina is stuck at Pemberly alone until the Colonel shows up and takes her to Kent to confront Darcy and make him confront his love for Elizabeth. Anne and Darcy tell Lady Catherine in no uncertain terms they don't want to marry each other. The Colonel and Mary start to fall in love!
This was another really fun Pride and Prejudice Variation by Meg Osborne. I loved how al the characters were written in this book and how we even get to see a good side to Mr. Collins and see him and Charlotte happy together. Mary was also well written and I enjoyed how the perspective would periodically shift between Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy, Richard, & Mary. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.
In this Pride and Prejudice variation Mr Bennet decides to accept Mr Collins invitation of Christmas at the parsonage. But who will be visiting Rosings and what will be the consequences An enjoyable story
Joyful and sweet! My favorite part was the church scene with D&E! Anne's characterization was a bit more outgoing than what I was expecting, but refreshing all the same.
3.5 Stars Christmas in Kent is a nice variation in which the Bennet family decides to spend the Christmas season with the Collins to prevent Lydia and Wickham from spending the holidays in Longbourn.
In this variation, Lydia and Wickham have not yet visited the family after they got married; early in the book, we discover that only Bingley has returned to Hertfordshire, and he and Jane are already married and spending the season in London. Elizabeth is unaware of the role Darcy played in Lydia's marriage, so she thinks he has given up on her, since she hasn't seen him again since their fateful meeting in Derbyshire. To Elizabeth's surprise, she runs into Darcy again in Rosings and, forced to spend Christmas together, they will have another opportunity to clear up all their misunderstandings.
The story is very Christmassy, and we also have a subplot with Mary and Colonel Fitzwilliam falling in love, which was quite sweet. The book would benefit from a revision, as it contained some minor inconsistencies, as well as some unjustified changes to the personalities of certain characters, although these changes worked well for the plot.
Christmas in Kent was a quick, light, and easy read, perfect for relaxing a bit before tackling a more complex book.
Two things that take a bit of a stretch of the imagination. Can you imagine Mr. Bennet deciding to spend Christmas at the Hunsford parsonage with the Collinses? And can you imagine Darcy leaving Georgiana alone at Pemberley over the Christmas holidays?
Bennet uses the invite from Mr. Collins to ensure that the Wickhams will not impose on the Bennets over the holidays. While Darcy seems to think that Georgiana having some time alone will help her overcome her feeling of guilt and further reticence.
Colonel Fitzwilliam does show up to Pemberley and takes G. with him to Kent where Georgiana makes friends with Anne as well as the Bennet sisters. Darcy has already proposed to Elizabeth during a previous visit in Kent and they were becoming "friends" when the Gardiners took E. with them on their trip north...until Elizabeth got that letter about Lydia's elopement. (Elizabeth does not know Darcy's part in Lydia marrying Wickham at the beginning of this story.)
Anne de Bourgh is different from canon. She makes friends and gets out of the house.
I did like the second romance in this story. Who?...read this variation and find out.
This sweet, feel good Christmas story was a lovely read. I wanted something light, little to no angst and joyful. This was a good choice and gave me just that. It is pretty short so it won't take too much time to read during this busy time of year. Plus, I love this pairing of couples. You get a two for one on this book. Lovely Christmas read.
A sweet book that doesn't try too hard to fit into the style of the original. I loved getting to know the dismissed/neglected characters of Anne, Georgiana, Mary, and Fitzwilliam.
This a reread and on this reading I really enjoyed the story. I have upped my stars from 2 to 4 and would very much recommend it to anyone who likes a sweet romance (or two) especially when set at Christmas.
