The Snyderverse Saga: The Culture-Shattering Phenomena Behind Zack Snyder’s DC Film Universe

Rate this book
In the midst of a superhero takeover with groundbreaking films bringing comic books to the big screen on an unprecedented scale, one cinematic saga would forever alter the landscape of superhero movies and Hollywood…

Batman. Superman. Wonder Woman. As three of the most iconic heroes of all time, the task of translating these beloved DC Comics characters and their stories to film would be the ultimate challenge for any director. By embracing this challenge, Zack Snyder—who gained popularity following successes with 300 and Watchmen—would find himself at the epicenter of controversy. Shaped by studio conflicts, creative differences, increasingly divisive public opinion, social media, the COVID-19 pandemic, and personal tragedy, the making of Snyder’s films (Man of Steel, Batman v Dawn of Justice, Justice League) would come together to form a remarkable tale.

In The Snyderverse Saga, entertainment journalist Daryn Kirscht chronicles the epic behind-the-scenes true story of Snyder’s DC Comics films, their revolutionary impact on superhero movies and Hollywood, and the power of the fandom in fighting for creative freedom. After achieving victory following the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, a new wave is on the rise with #RestoreTheSnyderVerse to adapt the cinematic landscape to the modern world… a “Knightmare” world.

Will the “Snyderverse” continue? Only time will tell...

The Snyderverse Saga: The Culture-Shattering Phenomena Behind Zack Snyder’s DC Film Universe by Daryn Kirscht follows the controversy .and the impact the fandom had on fighting for Mr. Snyder’s vision. Mr. Kirscht is an author, podcaster, library paraprofessional, and entertainment journalist.

While I had some issues with Zach Snyder’s storytelling, not that I could do better). However, I always enjoyed his vision, and appreciated his cinematic photography. I enjoyed Man of Steel, and unlike the vocal minority (as per Rotten Tomatoes audience score), I thought that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, was a layered masterpiece, troubled as it may.
But I’ve been a Superman fan since I was eight – so there’s that.

For the record: Zach Snyder’s Justice League (ZSJL) was the best movie I saw in 2021, as well as putting Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in a whole new context.

I have always supported the #releasethesnydercut movement, but I never realized how big it was. I wasn’t able to keep with the roller-coaster ride, but this book filled in the gaps.

The Snyderverse Saga: The Culture-Shattering Phenomena Behind Zack Snyder’s DC Film Universe by Daryn Kirscht is a highly detailed, chronological account of how it all unfolded. I’m surprised I actually enjoyed a book which pulls from various media sources, including blogs, social media, interviews, and other sources. Frankly, whenever I read a book which quotes me some redditor it’s an automatic “hard stop”. However, this book does mention rumors, and uses them in the context of hype and innuendos of the time.

The book talks about Snyder’s career, but mainly concentrated on the DC Cinematic Universe, eventually leading to the Justice League. ZSJL will prove to be a historic event, where a fan base came together to let a director have his vision.
And most of us loved it.

I hope the events chronicled in this book will be noticed by the entertainment executives. Let the creators create. Leadership’s role, in any organization, is to specifically remove hurdles, not bring on artistic vision.

The Snydercut Saga

This was a fan book about the Snyder verse saga, in particular the fan movement to release the Snyder cut of Justice League. I personally agree that the Snyder cut of the film was far better than the version released in theaters. The Snyder films for DC were very good, and it is a shame we won't see his complete vision. Unfortunately, Warner Brothers studio heads interfere with the films and filmmakers even more than Disney/Lucasfilm does. The author is a DC fan and it does color his viewpoint in sections, especially in relation to Marvel Studios. Calling Marvel films as lighthearted and jokey is biased. Captain America, The Winter Soldier and Civil War along with Black Panther, Avengers Infinity War and Endgame were not lighthearted films. They ran the gamut of human emotions and connect with a far larger audience than DC is able to. This book came out before Spider-Man No Way Home, which blew last years box office and is still going strong shows how Marvel is able to connect so well with audiences. Sorry, you need to give credit where credit is due. I'm glad the fans convinced WB to release his visionary cut and this is an interesting story, but Marvel is the phenomenon no one can beat and others should be learning from.

I am a true fan of Zack Snyder! 300 was the first movie that he directed that I watched and loved. I also became a Butler fan as well. I remember where I was when I saw the first trailer of man of steel. The trailer made my blood pump. Superman is my favorite superhero character since I was a child. I read all the comic books while I had leukemia as a little boy. I did color sheets of him, watched the Reeves movies, and wore pjs with a cape. But this trailer made me think that this was going to be different from everything.

And it was!

I was the first in line for the movie. My friend and I wore matching S shirts. We were blow away! I went and saw that film three times in theaters. And every time I loved the movie more and more. BvS was even better. To me it made you respect the characters more and made you love the story line. Then the DCU happened. All the movies in the DCU I enjoyed, bought, and continue to watch. The suicide squad was the least of my favorite, but knowing their is a director cut make me wish it would happen.

The DCU was destroyed when the Joss version came out. I remember walking out with my wife and telling her, “There is no way this was Zack’s work. It was choppy and the tone was so different.

This lead me to saturate myself in the DC news and I found myself upset with WBs and how they could logically move away from Zacks storyline. But the ZJL came out and I was blown away of what the DCU could have been! Zack is a unique, creative, and awe-inspiring director. But what I love most is that from what I read is a good man. I’m sorry for his lost and hope his family is healing for their loss.

This book was highly enjoyed, for the simple fact of sharing the facts of the saga, it’s potential future, and how it changed the comic book movie world.

Reading this book only makes me want to see the saga continue. To me Zacks cast are the heroes of DC.
