Liam MacKinlay is certain that when he asks for Evelyn Stewart’s hand in marriage, the third time’s the charm. For hasn’t he risen to war chief of the clan MacKinlay, a seasoned warrior, and an honored member of the clan that took him in as a child? But once again, her father denies Liam the lass he lost his heart to years ago.
Daughter of the Laird of the Stewart clan, Evelyn is expected to perform her daughter’s duty, including marry for the better of the clan... even if that’s against her will. But upon learning her father plans to trade her to an unknown clan in exchange for cattle, she will do almost anything to escape the future set out before her—including running away and marrying Liam MacKinlay.
Liam’s discovering that beneath Evelyn’s sweet disposition is an iron will to match any warrior. But now their marriage may start a war between the clans and Liam must fight for his new wife and his family. Even if it means raising his sword against those he calls “kin”…
Liam MacKinlay's greatest wish is to marry Evelyn Stewart and have a family of his own...but her father keeps rejecting his suit. Daughter of a Laird, Evelyn is expected to marry for clan alliance. But when her father plans to trade her to an unknown clan, she will do almost anything to escape...including running away and marrying Liam.
This is the third book in the Clan MacKinlay series. I recommend reading this series in order as the set up for this couple happens in the previous books. Evelyn was kidnapped and abused, but rescued by Liam's clan. (Trigger warning for rape and PTSD).
I've been waiting for Liam's and Evelyn's story and it was a major emotional rollercoaster! Liam was taken in by Clan MacKinlay as a child. He was never sure if he was orphaned or abandoned, but he always struggled with feelings of not belonging. Evelyn feels rejected by her father after her abduction; so when she learns that he's going to barter her for cattle, she decides to take her destiny into her own hands. She doesn't want to marry or be touched by a man again but escaping with Liam is her only option. Evelyn has some major secrets, and this couple has a long, bumpy road to their HEA.
I loved that the characters felt fleshed out and realistic...they had struggles, they made poor choices, they talked to each other. The ending was a little too perfect after the chaos of the rest of the story, but I still liked it. I hope the character David might get a spin-off story.
Tropes: Scottish Romance, Found Family, Marriage of Convenience (sort of), Protector, Ruined
Steam Rating: It's very hard to rate the steam for this one because there were several scenes, but none were very explicit...some were very short, some "fade to black"/insinuation.
* I received an ARC and this is my honest review. #HerForbiddenHighlanderHusband #NetGalley.
Liam MacKinlay was taken and raised as family after he was found alone and wandering on MacKinlay land as a young child, and since that day he has tried to be worthy of the honor the MacKinlays did for him by taking him, and more than anything, he wants his own family. But after meeting Evelyn “Ev” Stewart when he was part of the rescue party that saved her from the McCurdys that abducted and held her captive, he added another wish to his list – Ev as his wife. Over the past few years, he has asked her father for her hand and been refused twice. Now he plans to ask a third time, but this time he comes as the War Chief of the MacKinlay clan and hopes the title will hold some sway with her father. Sadly, it doesn’t and Liam is rejected once more and sent on his way. As he is leaving, Ev confronts him in the stable and tells him that she will marry him – now.
Liam can’t believe his good fortune, he marries Ev, and just as they are setting out to return to his home at Dunardry, Ev runs to a cottage in the village and returns with a small girl, who she introduces as her daughter Gwendolyn. Liam takes this surprise in stride and accepts Gwennie as his own without question. Ev then makes it clear that after the abuse she endured at the hands of the McCurdys that she cannot abide a man’s touch and in doing so, shatters Liam’s dreams of children of his own, but he takes this in stride as well, happy to have Ev in his life any way he can have her. But things go from bad to worse when they arrive at Dunardry and Liam realizes that what he thought was love was just a fantasy, he couldn’t love Ev because he never really knew her and with the patience of a saint, Liam sets out to get to know his wife.
Slowly, Ev warms up to Liam and even begins to desire him, something she never thought would happen, they not only become intimate, but they also take in more children and form the family Liam always dreamed of having, but Ev is keeping secrets from him, secrets that could cause a multi-clan war. Even when her father demands Liam annul their marriage and Ev’s return, Ev doesn’t reveal the real reason – that her father has promised her hand in marriage to the heir of the Morgan Clan. Instead, she breaks Liam’s heart by agreeing to surrender to her father, rather than let the MacKinlays go to war. But Liam isn’t willing to let her go and after making some emotional realizations, rides out with his “brothers” to confront her father and gets the shock of his life in a twist that will change everything!
I am not sure how to rate this book because while the story was excellent, I had a really hard time liking Evelyn and I found Liam to be a bit too beta, but as the story progressed, they both began to grow on me and by the end of the story, I loved them both. This is not your run-of-the-mill historical romance, Liam is a beta hero with a huge heart of gold and Evelyn is a survivor of rape and captivity. In the beginning, Ev is very hard to like, she uses Liam and treats him very badly, but slowly, Liam's innate goodness prevails and she learns to trust and love him. The book has a lot of emotion, some triggers, warm love scenes, surprising revelations, shocking twists, familial love, acceptance, and finally a very sweet HEA. This book is the third book in the series, but I didn’t read the previous stories and I was able to follow the backstory with no problems.

This was a very unusual Highlander romance and at first I wasn't sure I would like it. But the hero is so amazing! He's fierce, and large and handsome but he has the best soul ever. He was adopted by the Clan after they found him wandering lost and alone when he was a toddler. He is now War Chief and is in love with a girl he rescued from her vile abusers three years ago. He has asked for her hand three times and was refused. This time Ev, the heroine follows him out and says I will marry you and they marry and as they are leaving town she stops at a house and retrieved a small girl. It was her daughter and her Father wouldn't let it in the castle because she was born from her abusers. He treated his daughter like a harlot even though she was raped. It was awful. But this kind sweet and Corinthian takes them home and loves them. The heroine was so afraid of men and she just keep treating him badly and I was a little annoyed after a while but gradually she came to list after him and it was sweet. He has been with some girls but is very naive and so on love with her it was amazing. I don't want to spoil this because it's them falling in love after marriage and their trials and tribulations. But I loved it. I would call this safe because I couldn't tell when he was with those women but it sounded like when he was very young and definitely not good at it. Lol I loved this series. I hope we get to read about the children now! Just love this author.
Liam must be a glutton for embarrassment. He gets denied a third time for the hand of the fair Evelyn, but this time she over hears and takes matters into her own hand. The marry and leave along with a little surprise. Back with Liam's clan her father tries repeatedly to steal her back to fulfill a marriage contract with a distant clan. Distant clan arrives and there's a shocker.
Evelyn didn't fall easily into love, but eventually there is a HEA. Now will David get an HEA.
This is a stunningly beautiful novel about family and some of the different forms it comes in, is created, or is made. Allison B. Hanson took me on an emotional ride through the pinning heart of our hero, to the turmoil the heroine faces, to the ups and downs of building a home and understanding the true meaning of family. Hanson's writing is accessible and easily draws the reader in, her story is well paced as she slowly builds a trusting relationship between the hero and heroine over time, and it is extremely heartwarming as dreams are realized in a wholesome and unexpected way. This novel is people by compelling and interesting characters, from the hero and heroine to their friends (from past novels), and they all are definitely at the heart of understanding what family means in this novel/series.
Liam is an orphan who was taken in by the MacKinley clan in his youth when he was found wandering the forest surrounding their keep. They immediately accepted him as their own, even though as he has grown up he has always felt a little on the outside and lost. Liam has dreamed of having a family to call his own, and since he first met the heroine, Evelyn, years ago he has been infatuated with her wanting to call her his own and protect her. Evelyn has a had some very traumatic things happen to her (back before she was rescued by Liam and his clan). Content Warnings for rape and sexual assault, Entangled Publishing is great about listing their content warnings on their website for every book if you need them. The last few years Evelyn has felt less than and tainted in the eyes of her father, so when she sees a chance to escape and make a better life for herself she approaches Liam and they elope. With this new opportunity Evelyn is able to escape her father and take with her the most precious thing she has in this life, her daughter.
I found this novel to be an emotional journey. At the start we see Liam who is longing for a family and has hopes to build that family with Evelyn. He is patient with her, always kind and accepts her daughter as his own from the start. Evelyn has a much harder journey to overcome in some ways, she is untrustworthy of men, she begins the novel really only hoping to use Liam as a means of escape, but he slowly breaks down her walls through his actions. This starts off as a slow journey of two people coming to a deeper understanding of the other. Liam has always put Evelyn on a type of pedestal but as he gets to know her, understand her needs and wants he sees her as human with flaws and insecurities, and this is what makes her beautiful and a person to be loved. Evelyn must learn to trust herself and her heart when it comes to seeing Liam as someone who has only her best interest in mind when it comes to her and her daughter. The representation of communication between Liam and Evelyn is also really fantastic. There are many times when one of the other says something wrong, they always take a beat to understand what happened in the situation and then they seek the other out to better discuss and come to an understanding with each other. I really loved this because it showed me that these two were really working to learn from each other, hear each other and build a stronger foundation for their relationship to flourish. This novel has wonderful consent and watching Liam learn and seek advice on how to make his wife feel comfortable in their growing physical relationship is just wonderful. Liam is such a kind and patient hero, he is always checking in with Evelyn, and making sure she is in control as she begins to trust her body with another. Evelyn also really grows to understand the beauty of a physical relationship that she and Liam can share and how this can open up their trust and understanding of each other.
There are so many other beautiful things I could point out in this novel, but those would be spoilers, so definitely do yourself a favor and pick up this novel if you love a story with strong family growth and understanding at the center of a love story. I would definitely highly recommend!

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I think Liam and Evelyn almost covered every subject that a couple could overcome. I liked how the story was told, as well,as Liam and Evelyn’s relationship began. The writer did a great job with supplying the details to the story that describes them all with as much realism that a story could have. The action was very timid in the book, but I got the idea of what happened after the details that were given. I would have liked if the scenes were written in to give the action to this good book. The romance scenes had a little heat, but I would have liked more spicy to inferno. The drama to the story was great. I found myself getting tired of how Evelyn was acting in the end, but I was glad that Liam stayed being a true gentleman through the whole thing.
Her Forbidden Highlander Husband is book three in the Clan MacKinlay series written by Allison B. Hansen. As with the previous books in the series this story is full of amazing characters, difficult situations, a hero who is slightly emotionally damaged, a heroine who has been through hell, and a romance that leaves you blissfully satisfied!
To fully enjoy this story I highly recommend reading the first two books Her Accidental Highlander Husband and Her Reluctant Highlander Husband first and then diving into this book. While they “could” be considered standalone books — there is so much connecting backstory and overlapping character ARCs you may not see all the character growth and subtle nuances could be missed.
This story is focused on Liam MacKinley who is the epitome of a perfect man, as we follow him through his journey of building and finding the one thing he has always longed for, family. Liam wants to marry Evelyn Stewart, The Stewart’s daughter, and even though he has been refused twice already when seeking her hand, he is determined and seeks her father’s permission again. Due to a previous abduction and torture, Evelyn Stewart is not sure she ever wants to marry, she can’t imagine ever being close to a man again. However her father has other plans and has made plans to give her to The Morgan lairds heir in exchange for…cattle. When she sees Liam asking for her hand and being denied she decides to take matters into her own hands and persuades Liam to elope against her fathers wishes. Once the two are wed the true reason behind her actions are revealed and although surprised Liam is happy. Now he just has to get his wife to fall in love with him and then hope he can keep her.
This story will keep you flipping the pages as fast as you can and by the end of the book you will have been on an emotional roller coaster— such a great ride!!
P.S. Bring the Kleenex 😭

Overall 5 Stars ⭐️ | 4 Flames 🔥 | highly recommend this book & the series.
This book promised a captivating tale, but unfortunately, the central character's dishonesty overshadowed any potential intrigue. The heroine's deceitful actions were a constant source of frustration, making it difficult to connect with or root for her. Can't stand her.
I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
CW for rape off page.
This book made me feel lots of things. It was extremely emotional dealing with Evelyn's trauma due to being kidnapped and raped. Liam heals Evelyn, but it's a bumpy road filled with times where things are not easy for them. Liam is so kind and understanding, and helps Evelyn overcome her trauma while building a true and lasting love.
I really did enjoy this, but some parts were very heavy. I was not expecting some of the feelings that it was making me feel. Liam was a perfect hero who was patient in a situation that could be rather difficult, and he dealt with all of Evelyn's triggers and issues by earning her trust and taking their relationship slow. I loved watching their love bloom slowly over many chapters, but I wish that things had been smoothed over so easily at the end. It wrapped up too easily with everything working out too perfectly.
The third book in the Clan MacKinlay series, Her Forbidden Highlander Husband is the love story between Evelyn Stewart and Liam MacKinlay. Liam’s most fervent desire is to marry Evelyn, and he has asked her father for Evelyn’s hand twice before the story begins. He was rejected both times, as Evelyn’s father plans to marry her to another man in a trade agreement. When Liam asks for the third time and is rejected, yet again, Evelyn takes matters into her own hands and marries Liam, unbeknownst to her father.
Now married, Evelyn and Liam travel back to his clan. However, things aren’t as perfect as Liam hoped. Evelyn brings a little one with her, and Evelyn is very traumatized by events from the past, as well as her father’s verbal abuse. She is slow to trust and wary of men. As this couple adjusts, Evelyn’s father proves that he won’t let her get away so easily. With so many obstacles in their way, will Liam and Evelyn find a happily-ever-after?
I love Liam and Evelyn’s story! Liam’s a little clueless about love and what is really meant to be married. He has these idealized notions ever since he met her, and though he cares for her, he doesn’t realize the extent of the trauma she went through. I love how supportive, understanding, and encouraging he is throughout the book. Though they are married, Liam must work hard to gain Evelyn’s trust and affection, and he shows how much he cares for her repeatedly.
Evelyn is a survivor, and she shows how strong she is throughout the story. She has suffered terribly throughout her life, and she is dealing with a lot of emotional trauma. (I would recommend checking out the content warnings before reading this book. Some of the topics, including rape, abuse, violence, and more might be triggers for some readers.) I think being with Liam helps her find peace and happiness. Other characters in the story, especially the couples from the first two books, help Evelyn on her emotional journey.
I love that the couples from the first two books have significant roles in this story. You get to see what has happened to them and how their relationships have grown and changed, which is fantastic. They are all so close to Liam, and they quickly welcome Evelyn and her child into their family. They are wise and understanding, and their support of Liam and Evelyn, as well as the overabundance of love they have for the rest of their family and clan, definitely contributes to Evelyn’s feelings of safety and acceptance. Their banter and ease with each other show how close, loving, and loyal they are, which is very different from what Evelyn has experienced from her father.
Though this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. That being said, I would recommend the entire Clan MacKinlay series to historical romance readers. It’s a great series, and I can’t wait to see who the focus of the next book will be! I love the characters, and the romances are always swoon-worthy! Thanks so much to Netgalley, Entangled Publishing, and the author for sending this copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Her Forbidden Highlander Husband Book 3 in the Clan MacKinlay Series Rating: 3 stars Thank you to the publisher for the ARC given through NetGalley for review. All opinions are my own.
******SPOILERS AHEAD********
Her Forbidden Highlander is the third book in the series and tells the story of Liam MacKinlay and Evelyn Stewart. I'll start by saying that this is not a light read, since we see how Evelyn is still suffering the consequences to what happened to her three years ago. She sees Liam's marriage proposal as an escape from her father's plans of marrying her to an heir to another clan. Poor Liam....he marries her because he fell in love with her when he first met her. ( His clan is who rescued her from the group of men who had abused her). Liam has a very sad backstory and at his twenty years of age still feels that he doesn't belong and sees his marriage to Evelyn as a way to finally have the family he always desired. Why the 3 stars? I liked the story, but I wished I would of loved it like the previous two. This story has many sad and upsetting situations happening. Like I mentioned earlier, this is not a light, happy always story. There are more sad moments than happy ones. And even those sometimes are a little bit sad. Most of the time I just wanted to cry for Liam or Evelyn because of what they had gone through or for how the past was still hurting them. I feel bad for what happened to Evelyn, but for some reason I think she wasn't ready to fall in love. She's still dealing with her trauma and finally being able to be with her daughter without having to go behind her father's back. If she would of gotten more time to adjust to finally being with her daughter and not have the pressure to accept Liam's feelings she wouldn't of reacted or said some hurtful things to him. I liked Liam, but I think him being twenty years still needed a little growing up. I loved that he had a big heart and welcomed Gwen since day one as his daughter. Also, some the scenes felt a little repetitive and by the 54% mark it seemed that the biggest obstacle had been overcome. Therefore for the rest of the story I got a little bored. I do recommend if you read this one, please read the previous two so you can meet the other two couples that we see in this one. ( I gave book two 5 stars.)

I loved the first two, but there’s an element in this one that really threw me off. I believe I have no triggers, and I guess I just found one. Which is a bit ironic, all things considered that it’s THAT one that set me off.
Without spoiling it, I didn’t like the character. She used him utterly and entirely, and not just to get out of a bad engagement. I’m sure eventually, down the line of the book, she learns to love him for real, but the entire beginning was a turn off. And then when he’s understanding and simply tries to have a conversation, she gets sooooo defensive, and really for no reason. Like, she’s the one who brought him into this, so what does she expect?
Liam MacKinlay is certain that when he asks for Evelyn Stewart’s hand in marriage, the third time’s the charm. For hasn’t he risen to war chief of the clan MacKinlay, a seasoned warrior, and an honoured member of the clan that took him in as a child? This is the third book in the series & whilst it could easily be read on its own, the two previous books do set the scene for this one. The characters were well portrayed & had depth, I liked both Liam & Ev but I didn’t love them. I preferred Liam to Ev but I found it hard to reconcile the ruthless warrior with the almost meek man at home, he was honourable, loving & had a heart of gold but he also had insecurities. Ev had suffered terribly at the hands of the McCurdys & found it hard to move forward but I applauded her for trying & finally succeeding, I didn't like that she deceived Liam for so long. Their road to a HEA wasn't easy & in the end had a very surprising turn. A well written book that was evenly paced & was full of emotion & not the typical highlander romance My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This Author writes about each character in this book as though she was their sister. I loved the people in this story so much that I spent much of my time reading through my tears (happy and sad).
I absolutely adored Liam while my heart was breaking for him. Evelyn was the woman whom he loved after rescuing her from the m circus who abused her sexually for weeks to months. Liam gave her time to heal then went to her father to request her hand in marriage twice but was denied both time. When he is made war chief of his clan and he is given his own room in the castle so he again requests Evelyn's hand. He is denied for the third and final time. Evelyn had listened at the door. She ran to pack her things because she decided to marry Liam. She found him the barn. This is their love story.
Third in the Clan McKinlay series, Her Forbidden Highlander Husband, is set in the Scottish Highlands in 1664. I loved the first two books and expected to love this one too. For the most part, I did, though there were one or two flat patches along the way. This is a deeply emotional story that will not appeal to all readers as it contains a number of possible triggers. The driving forces behind Evelyn and Liam’s story are rape and child abuse, some aspects of which are fairly detailed. I found those scenes fairly disturbing, though they were well written. I certainly came away from each of them with a fresh respect for Liam and Evelyn. Despite these triggers, I enjoyed reading this story. I’m not sure whether it is the last in the series but if not I’ll happily devour the next book.
Liam has asked Evelyn’s father, Laird Stewart, for her hand in marriage 3 times and each time he was denied. Liam was an orphan who rose up to be the War Chief for clan MacKinlay but that was not good enough for the Stewart laird. Evelyn met Liam when he escorted her home after she had been captured and raped by the brothers from the MacKurdy clan. She did not know Liam had offered for her 3 times until she overheard his last offer. She decided then to marry him. Unfortunately, she was not completely honest with Liam when he married her but her secrets became known over time. I had a very hard time liking Evelyn. Liam on the other hand was kind, patient, loving, honorable and all the things you would want in a man. Evelyn was lucky to have him but she took her time realizing it.
Liam & Evelyn: triggers: kidnapping, domestic abuse, PTSD, sexual assault. Evelyn is the woman that was saved at the end of the previous book. Liam has been smitten with her since he first saw her and has made several trips to speak with her father to ask for her hand. only being a war chief is not good enough for her father and he has plans to marry her off to another clan in exchange for cattle. the story is good but a slow burn. Evelyn was not my favorite female character of the series but she is dealing with a lot, including what we now know as PTSD. Liam is just a sweetheart and I felt bad for him throughout the book. Evelyn just kept letting him have it. but he kept fighting for her and that's a plus for me. there's a lot of surprises in this book and I really enjoyed all of them. it's an emotional rollercoaster. good read.
This was a really good ending to this trilogy. Great characters, and an interesting storyline. I think the story was a tad bit overlong, but good all the same. I figured out the ending way before it actually came to fruition, but the journey there was worth the wait. This was the story of Liam McKinlay, war chief of the McKinlay clan and Evelyn Stewart, daughter of the Laird of clan Stewart. To escape an arranged marriage, Evelyn agrees to marry Liam, failing to inform him of pertinent information, one being that she has a four year old daughter; thus begins their journey to happiness. A really great story and a fitting end to the trilogy.
Great book. Good end of series. I was being to wonder if Clan Mackinlay would ever keep a war chief. Liam has loved Evelyn since her introduction in the first book of series. He has asked for her hand three times and been denied three times by her father. After being violated by multiple men, then saved by the Mackinlay clan and returned to her father, Ev does not want to be any man's wife. After her father agrees to marry her to another man, Ev elopes with Liam. Not because she loves him, she goes to a cottage in the village afterwards and pick up her daughter. A daughter that Liam has no knowledge of. Through much trials and secrets, Liam and Evelyn get their happily ever after.
I found the premise that the woman was "tainted" and treated badly, a unique perspective for these types of stories and was intriguing. However, I also found parts of this story very sappy. I continued on despite my cringing overt he sappy parts and was rewarded with a male character who became endearing. I do have to say that at times, I found myself irritated with the female character. Mostly to how the author decided to have this main character react to situations and problems. I did like how the book concluded, so am recommending this a a good read.
Liam is adorable. The series is good, but this heroine I didn't like. Yes, she had trauma, but she just selfish and thoughtless. Read this one for the kids and Liam finding his place. The women make excuses for Evelyn's behavior. It seems the guys are always wrong. The heroine thinks sex makes up for her tantrums.
So after reading all 3 this was my least favorite. It was a great story make no mistake with a few laughs and tears but nothing like the sisters’ stories. I just need more books like this Allison B Hanson!! 😊😊😊😊😊🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜
I love to read books like this one after I have finished a really intense book..this is one of the you think it will all work out but you aren't sure happily ever after stories! Thank you for this book!
This was much better than I expected in the world of cookie cutter story plots. I loved the characters and their stories. This isn’t a skeletal tale needing fleshed out. It’s exquisite as it’s written. Bravo!
