Washington City 1861 (briefly Boston and New York)
Avenue of Betrayal brings into focus the divisiveness of the Civil War. Annie's brother Will married a Virginian. Will's best friend, John, is a Union officer. Even within families that love each other, opposite sides may be chosen and relationships challenged.
The risk of serving as a spy was high. To be caught meant stiff penalties. The author does a nice job of painting the picture of not only the risk, but also the motivating factors prompting involvement as a spy.
I enjoyed the story line and appreciated the historical details included in the pages. Look forward to the second in the series which will be set in Virginia.
My gratitude to Celebrate Lit for a complimentary e-copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
Try to imagine what it must have been like to live in Washington City - a Union stronghold, yet so close to Virginia and the fighting in the south. Friends and family live in the areas now within Confederate control. Will they be safe or will they join the cause on the other side?
John Finn is a Sergeant-Major in the Union army. A former student of West Point, will he now have to fight against friends he studied with? Wishing to get to know the lovely Annie Swanson better, he is willing to take on a task that is somewhat distasteful. Is it possible he will be counted as one of the many spies that are trading secrets in this war between the states of this fledgling country?
The author takes you right into the homes of these well developed characters, giving you a whole new appreciation for what it must have been like to live with secrets. This first book in the Spies of the Civil War was received through Wild Heart Books and CelebrateLit. These comments and impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.
After reading the book blurb for this novel, I knew I wanted to read it! While many Civil War novels have an emphasis on the battles that took place, this first book in Sandra Merville Hart’s Spies of the Civil War series shed a spotlight on the spying that occurred on both sides of the conflict along with the divided loyalties that could transpire within one’s family and circle of friends. Such was the case with this book, as the Swanson family and their friends and neighbors navigated through treacherous waters in their support of the Union or Confederate causes. All was definitely not as it seemed and the characters’ thoughts and emotions seemed palpable as I kept turning page after page. An inspirational faith element presented itself through numerous conversations regarding trust and forgiveness. Rebecca, the cook, had much wisdom to impart in these areas. I thoroughly enjoyed this book but felt it concluded rather abruptly and could have benefited from an epilogue. Sandra Merville Hart is a new-to-me author and I look forward to reading more of her books as well as the upcoming books in this series!
I received an advance reader copy from the publisher and Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions expressed here are my own.
Avenue of Betrayal is a great read for those interested in romance and Civil War history! There is a sweet romance that will be tried by the war that divided families and friends from each other. Descriptions of two major battles were depicted in a way that deepened my understanding of what it might have been like to live during those days of division. The book shares intrigue regarding people who supported their side of the war through spying, either by choice or by force. Actual people from history are seamlessly woven in with the fictional ones whom Sandra Merville Hart has expertly crafted into a heartfelt story.
Sandy Merville Hart’s Avenue of Betrayal is a look into Washington City—now known as Washington D.C.—during the early days of the American Civil War. It was a city divided, with people who were staunchly pro-Union living side-by-side with those who were fiercely pro-Confederacy. People didn’t know who to trust, sometimes even within their own families. Hart does a wonderful job of bringing that level of uncertainty and angst to the reader along with a gentle romance that must survive the secrecy and divided loyalties.
After weeks of rumblings about war, Union troops gather in Washington City (now known as the District of Columbia) to prepare. Annie Swanson and her family are staunch Union supporters, but her brother has joined the Confederate forces. Not only is Annie dismayed, but the defection threatens her growing relationship with Sergeant-Major John Finn, her brother’s friend. The author does a good job of showing how the war disrupted families and tested long-held loyalties. She also draws a picture of the nation’s capital city and the surrounding areas. A good read for historical readers, especially those who like the Civil War era.
Avenue of Betrayal is the beginning of the Spies of the Civil War series by Sandra Merville Hart. I really enjoyed reading John and Annie’s story. It is a tale of forbidden love that makes the characters decide where their true loyalties are. It is full of historical details that made me feel as though I had been transported back in time to the trials of the American Civil War. I had no problem reading the whole book in one sitting.
I am giving Avenue of Betrayal five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical fiction, especially those set during the American Civil War. I look forward to the second installment from the Spies of the Civil War series, Boulevard of Confusion.
I received a copy of Avenue of Betrayal from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
Sandra Merville Hart is one of my favorite authors of Civil War fiction. Her knowledge of the time period is extensive, and I always learn something when I read her books. The story is fast paced, with a good blend of romance and intrigue. I liked that she included real historical figures in the story. The characters are well-developed and complex, each with personal issues they are dealing with in addition to being embroiled in a country at war. The author conveys the uncertainty, danger, and difficulties of the time period, and I found myself rooting for Annie and John as they navigated day-to-day. Having lived outside of Washington, DC I enjoyed the references to places I regularly traversed, such as Rockville Pike (I had no idea its history went back so far!) I’m looking forward to book 2.
What can I say about Avenue of Betrayal? If you haven't read many books about the Civil War, you're in for a treat, and if you are already a fan...you're about to gain a whole new perspective. Avenue of Betrayal is an exciting book about The War Between the States, and author Sandra Merville Hart eloquently shows the devastation of this war. A war that destroyed the unity of our nation and caused families to be split apart. There are several intriguing characters, but the primary focus is on Annie Swanson and John Finn. Annie is very attracted to this Union Sergeant Major, and she hates that her father has asked her to hide the fact that her brother has changed his loyalty and is now fighting for the Confederacy. Annie is torn by this plea for secrecy, but John isn't exactly truthful either. He has been asked to spy on Annie's father, a suspected supporter of the Confederacy. Secrets, spies, and young love amidst war and destruction. How can there be a happy ending?
I have always been fascinated by this part of our United States history and Hart completely captures the uncertainty of this time. She also shares an aspect that I wasn't as familiar with. Spies were very much a part of this conflict and her author's notes tell us that Washington City (Washington, DC) and Richmond were hotbeds for this activity. Hart offers a stirring account of John and Annie's dilemma, and she shows the disappointment and sorrow that plagued so many, along with the tremendous fear if you lived near the fighting! The Civil War was a terrible conflict that caused people to doubt the ones that they loved, and to keep secrets from the ones that they held dear. Avenue of Betrayal is a moving, action-packed story that ends with a cliffhanger, and the promise of more adventure and intrigue in this Spies of the Civil War series.
If you enjoy historical Christian fiction, you will want to read Avenue of Betrayal. You won't be disappointed!
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. There was absolutely no obligation for a favorable review. These are my own thoughts.
I am a fan of Historical Fiction and the Civil War Era is especially intriguing to me. Avenue of Betrayal by Sandra Merville Hart is the latest book in this genre that I have read. Sandra Merville Hart is a "new to me author" and I was excited to read from a new author.
I can honestly say this was one the BEST Civil War Era, Christian Historical Fiction books that I have read in awhile. I really enjoyed the fact that the author based the book on happenings in Washington DC and not so much on the entire Civil War. The Swanson family is the main characters of the book, mainly Annie Swanson. John Finn is part of the Union Army and is tasked to spy on the Swanson family, without Annie Swanson knowing he is spying. I really liked watching the relationship between Annie and John grow, even through challenges they faced because of the spying and the War. I really enjoyed this book so much that I read it straight through within a couple of hours. WONDERFUL Story and book!
I am a huge history lover so any chance to read a fictional account of historical events intrigues me! This is a story written about the Civil War, but I found it extremely interesting because it doesn't focus on the battles but more about the lives of the people in Washinton DC at the time and the soldiers that were stationed there and the spying that went on. Although I knew in a vague sense that all these things existed, it was fascinating to read an account of it. The author used several real people to lend accuracy to the story. Annie's father is a wealthy banker in the city but as the story moves along, it is shown how even the wealthy had to "tighten their belts" due to the ravages of war. Adjustments had to be made in their daily lives. John is a sergeant-major for the Union and his romance with Annie is sweet and bittersweet as it shows the struggles couples had to go through during the war, plus the added burden he has to bear of spying on her family when he is order to by the army. A fine line he has to walk. He also has family burdens to consider as his father is very ill. I loved all the characters and the story. I can't wait for the next book!
Sandra Merville Hart is the authoress of this book, the first in a delightful new series. If you like historical fiction set in the US at the time of the Civil War. This book is a must buy. It really is very good, and an absolute pleasure to read and review for Sandra
The US Civil War split families and friendships into pieces.
I have read other books about the Civil War and its effects on people. This is a very different book, one that I can say I have really enjoyed
Annie & Beatrice are the daughters of a very wealthy banker in the north, when civil war brakes out in the US. They have a brother who decides to fight for the confederacy John a northern, United States soldier is attracted to Annie, however the United Army has other plans for John.
People where asked to spy on their neighbors and family members, causing problems that have had lasting effects.
The author Sandra Merville Hart, has written an amazing book, that not only tells the story it goes into the emotions of the characters, what they where feeling their joys and sorrows as they also tried to overcome difficulties and live in a war torn society.
I so enjoyed this book! A semi new to author that I'm coming to love. Her writing is extremely well done. Wonderful characters that I loved in getting to know. I learned many things that happened during the Civil War and this one definitely had me sitting on the edge of my seat. Annie and her brother are two of my favorite characters. I loved picturing myself in the beautiful homes of these characters but I also can't imagine how hard it would be to keep the many secrets either. The faith elements were most inspiring and a gentle reminder that the Lord is always there for us. He will never leave us. We need only to ask. This is a keeper for my bookshelf. It's definitely worth more than 5 stars. I highly recommend My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
I am always a fan of Civil War books. This one was interesting with the secrets surrounding the family. I definitely had a feeling something else was going one with Annie’s father. I won’t tell you if I was right or not, you’ll just have to read to find out.
John was a strong character too who I enjoyed reading about.
For me this book didn’t pull me to it like I am used to. It was a good book but for some reason I wasn’t fully engaged in the story. It definitely had a interesting plot and characters.
A copy of this book was give to me through the Celebrate Lit Team. All opinions are my own.
This is my first novel by Sandra Merville Hart. I found some of it repetitive and the beginning moved at a slower pace, but I really enjoyed the last third. Living in Washington City, Annie Swanson and her family must navigate the passage of information because of the rumors of Confederate spies. Annie's beau John (a Union officer) is secretly asked to spy on the Swansons to see where their loyalties are, especially because Annie's older brother who is John's best friend has mustered with the Confederate Army.
The preview of the second book in the Spies of the Civil War series as me itching to start the next novel! I think that one will be better than the first!
This has been a very nice story with characters that I have come to love. The setting of the story is during a troubling time in our country. Neighbors and friends fighting on opposite sides are disheartening for many. The author illustrates the tension felt among families as their men go off to war. When danger surrounding the town, Annie is cautious of everyone. It was hard for her family to keep a dangerous secret about her brother. What will happen if word spreads that he was on the opposite side of the war?
John is a great character who is fighting in the war while being assigned a mission that will cause him to deceit someone he loves. I loved how the author developed the relationship between Annie and John. It was a breath of fresh air to have this couple share their feelings in a nice and clean way. As they draw closer to each other the war draws closer to Annie and her family.
The secrets in the story are hard to hide as John begins to feel guilty for what he is doing. Can he keep the truth from Annie? What will happen if she finds out? The war finds John in an unsettling position as his best friend has been captured. What will John do when knowledge of his spy mission is found what? This part of the story is very good as it offers the question of forgiveness. Can John be forgiven and find love from the woman he betrayed? Annie is a person who has compassion and grace but this deception may destroy her feelings for John.
Don’t miss this first book in a series that is emotional as division is felt by all in a war that finds friend fighting against friend, brother against brother and the impact it has on family trust.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion l
Avenue of Betrayal is book one in the Spies of the Civil War series that is written by Sandra Merville Hart. This is the first book that I have read by this author, and it will not be the last. This book was right up my alley. I love reading about the Civil War. I actually did my master thesis on the use of Women and African Americans as spies in the American Revolution and Civil War.
This book opens up in 1861. We meet the Swanson family. I really fell in love with this family immediately. Annie has come from a strong abolitionist family. She is very surprised to find out that her brother has signed up to fight with the Confederacy in North Carolina. This was a time in our nation where it was brother against father, neighbor verses neighbor, etc. However, Annie's father does not want anyone to know that his son is fighting for the Confederacy.
Sergeant-Major John Finn wants to get to know Annie better. She has captured his heart. Then he is asked to spy on her father. John becomes worried. He is growing close to Annie and her family, he feels guilty for what his mission is. What will happen if Annie finds out?
I love the theme of forgiveness. I love that the author wrote that in - John had a job to do - and it could cost him his relationship with Annie. Could she forgive him if she finds out. The characters in this story are well written. The story is unique and engaging. I cannot wait to read the second book.
Thank You to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing met to read a copy of this book --- all thoughts are my own.
Sandra Merville Hart combines historical facts with a touching love story. The growing tension will keep you turning the pages. Annie Swanson fears the man she’s falling for will discover her brother is a Confederate Officer. Sergeant Major John Finn first met sweet Annie before the war and was friends with Annie's brother at West Point. John has never been able to forget Annie and sees it as good fortune when his regiment camps close to Annie’s impressive family home. That is until he’s asked to spy on her family; he’s torn but agrees. Annie’s wealthy and influential father hosts soirees to entertain the soldiers. John is often allowed to attend because he’s committed to reporting on her family. The tension escalates after the first battle, and the Union Army loses and retreats. Annie fears a Confederate attack on Washington City, and she's worried about the safety of John and her brother. The emotions throughout the novel are high but Annie and John turn to God in moments of crisis. If you enjoy sweet romances, books with an element of faith, and have an interest in the Civil War, this is the book for you.
This book in the first is six book series called Spies of the Civil War. It takes place at the start of the civil war and already emotions are running very high on the issue. I enjoyed this novel because the author did a very good job of keeping the content restrained because they ate a lot of civil war novels away from the battlefield that have a lot of darkness and in this one they managed to stay away from that. The characters were very likeable and reading this has made me excited to read the other books in the series.
We are introduced to Annie who lives with her father and sister. They are supportive of the Union cause even though their brother has enlisted in the Confederate army. Later it seems like their neighbors are becoming sympathetic about the confederacy and they are not sure what to do and who to trust.
To make things harder a childhood friend from Annie's past named John comes to town. He is an officer in the Union Army and friend of her brother. However he doesn't know of the indiscretion her brother has brought and is unsure whether to tell him. Is there a chance for love to blossom or will the current events tear them apart?
“Avenue of Betrayal” by Sandra Melville Hart was an interesting book about spies. I was kept reading because I had to know if the romance in the story ended up in a marriage now I know but if you want to know you have to read the book for yourself. At one point the tears were falling with Anna when she discovered the document that she wasn’t supposed to read. If you like romance novels about the Civil War and the slavery issue then this is a book that I recommend for you. I am looking forward to reading the second novel in this series. This is a clean read and has real spies as part of the characters. I really like reading novels that include history as well as fiction. This is a novel of faith and trust and family and forgiveness. It was easy to feel the character’s emotions as I was reading this book. I received a complementary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
The war between the states provides the setting for this new series centered around the Swanson family. Annie Swanson, her sister Beatrice and her father side with the Union. Meanwhile, their only brother Will lives in North Carolina, and sides with the Confederacy.
Meanwhile, Will’s best friend John Finn serves in the Union army, and finds himself forced to spy on the family. I love the honest emotions displayed by the characters in this story. Showing the power of faith, courage, and compassion, this book provides the perfect beginning to this series.
If you appreciate works of historical fiction, check out this book for yourself. I definitely recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
This book made me really think about what it would be like to have lived during the Civil War era and the possibility that your friends or family members might chose a side that you did not. I liked the characters alright. There wasn't much of a faith element other than the characters going to church. The writing style didn't mesh completely with my tastes in reading material, so I wasn't over drawn into the story. The majority of the book had a slow pace, but the end just wrapped everything up really quickly. I am interested in checking out other books written by Sandra Merville Hart.
I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received for my review.
Oh this was a good Civil War book read. It isn’t like a lot of the historical books for this period that I’ve read that is focused on the battles, but more the spying. I thought that was neat. The author is great at writing and I love her writing style.
I liked seeing the little nuances of the wars and that it wasn’t all just outright fighting. The romance was well done and I truly just enjoyed the entire story.
4/5
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
I thoroughly enjoyed being taken back to the Civil War era through this book. The battles, the secrecy, the deception, the trust, the spying, the loyalty and the betrayal. What a roller coaster ride of emotions. The author does a good job in incorporating all these features to make the book engaging and hard to put down. Will the betrayal and secrecy lead to the ruin of friendship, family and relationships?
The book had me drawn in from page one until the end. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series and can’t wait until it comes out.
I received an ARC of this book from Celebrate Lit for my honest opinion and review.
I had trouble getting into the story at first but soon wanted to know what happened. There was so much division between families during the Civil War and Sandra Merville Hart portrayed it well. It gave us a good picture of what life was like then. It was fun to watch the relationship between Annie and John grow.
I recommend this book to my family and friends.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
A young Union soldier is asked to spy on the father of the woman he is courting. He is not given much of a choice to refuse as someone else will be asked to do this in his place. He has much angst about this but does it. When his girlfriend finds out he has much explaining to do if he wants to marry her. Good love story and history of spying during the Civil War.
