Desperate to escape the Wizard's magical assassin, Hope Redhood, Cor, Castrum, Dena, and Rosa seek safe harbor with the crime lord and self-proclaimed deity Romulus. Still hate the format, still think the art is amazing, still hate the dumb interviews in the back - this one especially since they repeated the last answer from the previous issue word for word. A lot of time is spent on "extras" for this series while the actual story moves so slowly and feels quite empty. I'm just not connecting with this at all.
Issue #3 has Redhood and company regrouping and seeking aid from an old flame of Red's named Romulus ( a Kirbyesque looking cad who reminded me of Ikaris from the Eternals ) along with a lackey looking like Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein monster all shadow and grey tones. The landscape reading and eye popping detail art by JHW III make for a pleasant read and I also dig the album details he provides in the back along with the letter pages. Just a full reading experience and worth the $3.99 price tag!
J. H. Williams III continues to impress with this "windscreen," multi-art style and unusual paneling in issue 3. Our crew seems to be shrinking by the minute and what does the gem unlock? They say they are in San Francisco, but is this far into the future or an alternate dimension parallel to our own where characters from our stories have come to life. One thing is for certain the Wizard and his "daughter" (who is some kind of golem made from plants and advanced tech instead of clay) they are not ones to negotiate or say no to. Is the Wizard in control or is it really the Daughter?
