Asato Asato, born 1985) is a female Japanese novelist. The pen name Asato Asato is a combination of her real name (Toru Asakura) and eighty-eight. Asato started writing novels just before she entered junior high school.
She initially submitted her work to the Kadokawa Beans Bunko Rookie Award, but when in 2014 her manuscript made it to the third round of the 2014 21st Dengeki Novel Prize, Asato started thinking about writing a novel that was "Dengeki Novel-esque." This novel would become the start of the 86 -Eighty Six- series.
In 2016, 86 -Eighty Six- won the 23rd Dengeki Novel Prize.
"I want to show you the sea... I want to see things we've never seen before, things yet obscured by the fires of war. I want to enjoy the same sights as you. I want to remain by your side. I want to be with you. Forever... if possible."
if this series doesn't end with shin showing lena the sea and them being happy and safe someone's going to pay
This volume brings a well deserved break for the 86 squadron members. The story is well written, despite not having combat or dangerous mission, this volume is full of tension (thanks to a pair of blockheads) and some new plots for future volumes. A lot of funny scenes, typical cliches in this genre, but the author manages to introduce them brilliantly in the story. The ending is great, with a couple of cliffhangers, and again, nicely narrated by the author. A great volume in this serie.
If, one day, you make it to our final destination, would you please leave flowers? I always want to be with you. Until your final destination. No matter where you end up, that will be my final destination, too.
4 STARS. Getting to this review a little late but oh well.
Ahem. First thing’s first.
THE COVER???? AJGDFRdDHJdD!!! Maybe my favorite cover EVEEER?
Pretty dress? Check. Dancing? (Every girl’s happy place) Check. The EPITOME of the word SHIP? Double-check. I don’t think I’m ever getting over this one. Ever. *girly squealing* Lena and Shin… I just can’t. <3
Okay. *deel breath* Now onto the story. THIS BOOK y’all. It was something else. There’s too much to talk about. This book didn’t have near as much action as the other books, and I loved it. While I enjoy the action and plot, this was a refreshing break. It still added to the plot since they were interrogating the Merciless Queen, but this book was basically one big vacation for the members of the Spearhead squadron. And you know what happens on fun vacations right? Oh yeah, you know what’s coming. *wink*
SHIPPING. (I warned you hehe) The amount of shipping that happened in this book. I can’t even. It was everything to my fangirl heart.
First. LENA & SHIN.
These two are the cutest adorable awkward and most adorable people on the fictional planet. I’m living for it. All throughout the book, basically everyone is just matchmaking them. There is nothing NOTHING better than a group of people trying to matchmake (fight me). Some of my favorite parts was when they guys and girls are separately talking about how both Lena and Shin are basically hopeless and they are going to need intervention if they’re getting together. SO FUNNY. Basically every time there was the chance for a romantic moment, the whole team would be watching in hiding. And that one scene with Dustin. When he interrupts the perfectly orchestrated situation and Anju wants to kill him. Honestly probably the funniest thing to happen in the whole series. (Am I the only one that can perfectly imagine a hand from nowhere jerking him in perfect anime fashion?)
Speaking of which…
DUSTIN & ANJU. Lena and Shin weren’t the only ones to get their moments. These two also had some pretty great moments. Like when they are trying to leave Shin and Lena alone and they all pair off and Dustin is so happy Anju went with him (without knowing what was happening lol). I love those two so much. <3
The ending of this book was especially good. Like how Annette gave them matching cuff link things?? I love Annette. Also all the dancing. Love it. And…
THEY. KISSED.
Finaaaally. I’ve waited 7 books for this moment. The books ends there, but in true Asato Asato fashion she adds a bonus on the end of the post reaction. Poor Shin. Still confused lol. These two never change.
Overall though, it wasn’t just the ship moments I loved in this one though. Honestly it was just great to have the gang together doing fun things together (like having a pillow fight) and just living. It was great.
Now. I would be remiss in not talking about the negatives in this book. Yeah, there were a few. Probably the first I’ve had for this series sadly. First was the amount of fan service. Maybe not exactly fan service, but still I didn’t love opening the book to a bunch of girls in bikinis. Meh. But that one is easier for me to get past.
It won’t be for most people, but I was sad they are starting to put in junk stuff. I knew it was only a matter of time but I’m still sad. Like alluding that Shiden maybe liked Lena, and one of the characters was mistaken for a girl most of the time. Yeah. A little sad for me. Not enough to ruin the series for me, but there nonetheless.
One other random think I didn’t like was how jealous Lena was in this book. Like, chill girl. It pretty obvious he likes you. *sigh* It didn’t seem like her and got a little old after a while lol.
Anyway, I can’t wait for the next book to come out. Back to battles and mecha! Long love the Spearhead Squadron!
(Side note: The anime just came out and I’m HYPED!! I’m watching it and it’s EPIC. Makes me realize how far they still have to go. But seriously, GO WATCH IT)
CONTENT NOTE: Some swimsuit fan service, allusion to a girl liking another girl, and several uses of strong language.

I LOVE THEM YOUR HIGHNESS, they're all so adorable and hilarious. This volume is lightheart and share similar vibe with vol. 4 but more lighthearted. It focus more on the eighty six story, their feelings, platonic or not, it has little progress in war/battle against legion.
4,5 stars. This is the more lighthearted volume Asato has been promising in the afterwords for a while now. Eighty-Sixth Strike Package first division (i.e. Shin and company) are on leave in the Alliance of Wald. They relax at a mountain resort so there's onsen scenes, stroll in the town and Lena and Shin's friends trying to create a moment for them to finally talk about their feelings for each other, haha. But there's a bit of Legion plot too, just not fights. They caught Merciless Queen in the last volume and now they are interrogating her. And getting a big scoop too...
This was a nice change of pace but I'm looking forward to the military campaigns and combat in the next volume too. Vol. 7 had a chance to tell a bit more about characters and it did, but mostly about Lena and Shin. The whole book was such a tease until the end but there was a reward there too! <3 I know beach or bathhouse "episodes" are almost obligatory and I don't mind that per se, it's about how it's done. Here it wasn't my favourite; actually, the beginning was probably my least favourite part of the volume. But as a contrast, I liked the ball at the end very much. (And this volume's cover is one of my favourites in the series!)
The development regarding Legion this volume revealed was certainly interesting. I must say though: that switch thingy isn't even fractionally foolproof, what did Empire even think??
A new character was introduced too and I hope Captain Aegis sticks around.
If I could, I’d give this one a million stars!!!!! Oh my sweet baby Jesus!!!! This is soooo goooddddddd!! I’m out here giggling with happy tears on my face!!!!! 🥹🥹🥹🥹😫😫😫
This series might be my all-time favorite. I'm not certain I'm ready to go there being a wheel of time reader and a song of ice and fire fan who's read some of the best fiction in the world but this... has... everything.
I ship Shin X Lena so hard. Not only that, but I'm like Why does it feel like Japan Has Love and romance down whereas the west still loves Trash love stories like 50 Shades of Grey, and Wuthering fuicking heights. Emerald saying it's the "Greatest love story of all time" PFFT. BULLSHIT.
Shin and Lena have a much better love story than Catherine and Heathcliff, That BULLSHIT couldn't hold a CANDLE To the FLAME of this love story, it isn't even competitive, it's being torn a new asshole by a wide margin, and its life has been forever altered by this series.
For the record, ladies I hate Dark Romance with the fire of every star in existence including the ones that are moving away from us faster than light because the universe is expanding faster than light, so their light will never reach us.
me and toxic love go together like Oil and water- it just doesn't mix. This is probably my Favorite volume so far because of it. I stan these two so hard.
"andit was because of that wish that Lena posited that the world ought to be a beautiful place. She knew how ugly the world was but refused to acknowledge this ugliness as the natural order. She refused to give up on the world—not as a simple idea she pursued but as a declaration of her pride. The worlds they knew may have been different altogether. Perhaps they couldn’t believe in people or in the world the same way just yet. But their desire to never give up—to never grow complacent—was likely one and the same. And so this was another thing they couldn’t relinquish. “And you’re not looking to be forgiven, either… You just can’t accept the world as it is right now. You couldn’t accept it, and you wanted to change it.” She couldn’t accept a world where people had to throw their lives away on the battlefield. Nor could she accept a world in which the Legion she created were the leading contributors to unparalleled bloodshed. “You don’t want people to die. You didn’t want that when you were alive, and you don’t want it now. And since that was your earnest wish, you want to stop the war—to stop the Legion. Am I right?” A long, heavy silence descended upon the room. But eventually, Zelene, the Merciless Queen, gave her answer. <> Her voice felt like a long, lamenting sigh. For the first time, her voice struck Shin as truly human. <mistakes, but… All I wanted was to save people.>> Her words of penitence echoed heavily within the partitioned, closed space. The confinement room and observation rooms were demarcated by a borderline of reinforced acrylic plates. And they stood on both sides of this confessional, like a sinner and a priest, as if she was begging for forgiveness. And then she said them. The words the Federacy, United Kingdom, and Alliance soldiers had all been waiting to hear. <information I sought to relay… But only under one condition. Shinei Nouzen. And Viktor Idinarohk. I will speak only to you two. Everyone else must leave. All recordings—all methods of observation and communication must end. Turn everything off.>> Given the importance of the information Zelene offered, her request was far too simple. But upon hearing what she had to say, Vika could only sigh. A long sigh, uncharacteristic of this cold-blooded serpent who rarely betrayed any sign of emotion, if at all. As if what he was feeling was too much to bear. “I can’t believe it…” He temporarily cut off the microphone to the confinement room and shook his head. Abiding by her demands, everyone but Shin and Vika left the observation room. “There really is a way to shut down all the Legion. But…” Yes. The Merciless Queen, Zelene, revealed to them the shutdown code for all Legion units deployed across the continent—and the triggering procedure for this code. And yet… Vika shook his head in frustration. “Triggering it wouldn’t do anything… Worse yet, if we reveal this to the public, human society could fall apart from the inside.” There was only one position from which the shutdown code could be transmitted… An Imperial fortress that was currently nestled deep within Legion territory. That wasn’t a critical problem. Even if it was seized by the Legion, they could still retake it. The Strike Package was made explicitly for such purposes, and it would put a definitive end to the Legion War. They could draw forces from other fronts for a concentrated strike. The problem lay with the one who would transmit the shutdown code. The only one who could do so was a person with command rights over all the Legion. And to register someone as having that right, they would need to be recognized as being descended from the Giadian Imperial bloodline. Specifically, it would require a genetic match. Only those of royal blood could be acknowledged as commanding authorities over the Legion…and six years ago, the Federacy’s military wiped that bloodline out, leaving not a single member of that family alive. The blood of the Imperial family that ruled over the Empire that died ten years ago. The blue blood of the emperor no longer ran through any living human’s veins. “If someone could be registered as having the authority to control the Legion, they could very likely control the Legion to do their bidding… This shutdown method is a farce. The Federacy killing the Empire means we’ve lost the means of stopping the Legion, forever.” Even Vika felt that this was truly a terrible turn of events. His expression was clearly bitter, and he heaved a sigh as he turned a pensive look on Shin. “We’ll disclose the rest of the information Zelene gave us to the three countries’ intelligence bureaus, but we’ll exclude this. Their latest scheme of operations and the location of their production facilities should be enough to tide them over… Agreed, Nouzen?” “Agreed.” Shin nodded curtly, steeling his expression and tone. He knew his emotions rarely showed on his face. His feelings were somewhat deadened ever since that day ten years ago, when his brother nearly killed him. But in this very moment, Shin was grateful for that. Because he couldn’t afford to let even Vika know the truth. The Legion could be stopped. It could even be done right now if they were to seize control of the transmission point. Shin wished he could clear away all the people around them, as there was no telling what anyone might do. Because Vika didn’t know. Neither did Lena, Annette, nor the other Eighty-Six with the exception of Raiden, Theo, Anju, and Kurena. But at least some of the western front’s officers knew. Those who took custody of her and spared her life alongside Ernst. They knew she had survived. How would they react once the information got out? Shin couldn’t predict that… Just as he couldn’t predict what would become of her once all was said and done. Frederica. The Giadian Empire’s final empress, Augusta Frederica Adel-Adler.
The hair on the back of my neck is wthout a doubt standing up, I have goosebumps. I'm in awe.

Why am I still reading this series? There was one decent book in it, and that was the first one. The others were overloaded with lengthy, repetitive battle scenes, which I never care for, and not enough character development.
Well, this one diverged. We get no action, all "fun", and some character development. Alas it feels like a standard Japanese high school story, including every crappy romance trope possible: - onsen, complete with girls engaging in sexual harassment over boob size, and boys listening from next door - FL gets surprised by ML in "compromising" dress/undress; humiliation and embarrassment ensues - speaking of the Cicada, the form-fitting suit that leaves Lena horribly embarrassed -- she knows that's what it does, she hates it, and yet, she "forgets" to take clothes to wear over it. You just need a cloak, girl; start having one in your bugout bag since this matters so much to you. Of course one wonders how she can hate it so much, considering her uniform is very form-fitting, with a tiny mini-skirt and those garters, which couldn't be more sexualizing if they tried - massive amounts of completely unjustified jealousy and possessiveness on the part of Lena - which comes complete with a misunderstanding of what another woman means to Shin - total unwillingness to actually build a relationship by talking with each other, regularly. THAT's what I find romantic rather than the rollercoaster feelings one gets by avoiding each other - and because they don't talk, they both wallow in deprecating themselves and having absolutely no understanding of how the other person feels about them - everybody else knows how they feel about each other and both scheme how to get them together, and alternately cockblock in just the wrong moment, or humiliate people by teasing (the Japanese seem to have a humiliation fetish which I could not hate more) - after there's finally a confession, and finally a kiss (volume 7!!!), that lasts for about a nanosecond before Lena screws it up thoroughly so we can have an extension of the never-ending misunderstandings
These are all tropes I am sick and tired of, so much that I cannot enjoy the romance at all anymore. I could handle it from Shin's side because for the most part he's just a bit too much on the stoic side, but at least the boy has reasons; he's severely traumatized. But Lena really has no excuses, and I am sorry, it's 2150. My entire lifetime (I'm almost 70) has been spent more romantically enlightened than these people are. I was screwed up as a teenager, I've had a more traumatic childhood than Lena, and even my teenage romances were more adult. I just can't find any of this "cute".
I know I'm a completist, but I should let it go. I keep hoping for something Asato Asato isn't going to give me, extended character development and growth of the original 5 kids plus Lena while they're trying to find a place in the world that can give them some happiness. All the battles against superior forces in minute detail do nothing for me, and the characters are too mired in dumb tropes.
Let's start with our cuties - Shin and Lena - FINALLY !!! My cuties I can't with them sometimes smh... God, this was one of the slowest slowburns ever. I can't with everyone's reaction to them just jumping around each other for sooooo long... (my reactions were literally the same, Anju, Raiden I feel you) GET TOGETHER FOR GOD'S SAKE, THANK U ! I was almost ready to admit that these two are hopeless and will never get together. Jokes aside, the romance here is very well distributed, and the ratio between the sweet moments and the combat just works perfectly for me.
Back to the start - and the mandatory beach hot springs episode ! I can't believe I'm saying it but it was done extremely well. I'm usually not a big fan of said episodes but here it felt so... natural. No weird 'tripping' and falling onto someone but just casual teenagers acting like... well... teenagers.
This volume had absolutely zero combat (apart from the training session with Olivia who btw is hilarious I love him) but even so it was action packed. It makes me so happy that the Eighty Six squad finally got some well deserved rest :]
And now hopping back to the ending !
Overall I feel like vol. 7 quickly joins my favorite volumes of 86. Literally smiling like crazy even now while writing this review :] Excited af for the next one !!! “You might be a woman of the Republic, but at the same time, you’re the queen of the Eighty-Six. Please don’t deny that. Not now.”
There's really not much to say about this volume other than I downright loved it! Our crew finally got the vacation they deserved, with some added training fun in between, and we had some wonderful development between Shin and Lena (much needed tbh!). It's so interesting to see the variance in Shin and Lena's perspective. Asato does an excellent job at portraying just how mature Shin is for his age, given when he's been through, in comparison to Lena. He doesn't second guess himself as much, his thought process is very linear while insanely thorough, and he's quite calm while navigating Lena's tumultuous emotions.
In contrast, Lena has a lot of self doubt and internal panic about her feelings and who she is as a person. This is largely due to the fact she's never been in a genuine fight or flight scenario where being attuned to herself is critical so she can make decisions are needed. But I have to hand it to Lena, she had a lot of personal growth in this one, where she was able to admit her strengths and feelings without second guessing herself so much. It was nice to see her take charge and I'm so, so proud of her!
Regardless, their romance was adorable, and the little snippets we get into everyone else was enjoyable as well. Raiden, my mannnn, I love him so much. His bond with Shin is on another level, and you can really tell they're brothers at the end of the day. It was hilarious to witness the crew try their best to push Shin and Lena into full blown ConfessionTM mode, while also trying to remain subtle. It was highly entertaining.
Asato had said in the acknowledgements they were worried about how a "non combat" volume would go...and I gotta hand it to them: it was so good. 10/10 stars, thanks. I'm scared for what's to come in the next "combat heavy" volumes! The merciless queen will be at the forefront of my mind with the way she interacts with Shin. Wish me luck, I'll need it.
a beautiful "filler" volume, despite the cliche tropes and the usual dragging. loved the pining, anticipating, and back-and-forth between Shin and Lena. i did wish there was more of it, though (i'm a big sucker for slow-burn and angst, yes ANGST). most of their relationship developments were told from Lena's pov, which tipped off the balance in this book. i was legit STRESSING with her, like GIRL I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND YOU!
however, i hated to see Lena being so miserable and pathetic for relying on Shin as her "sole reason to live." all she did in this volume was run around, obsess over him, and get jealous of everybody in his life. missy literally got jealous of Fido, and Fido's not even a human! like girl be so fr... that felt like a major decline in her overall, already-poor character development throughout the last few volumes, as if her character only served as Shin's "complement" or "love interest," and not actually a character of her own, crucial to the plot.
on a positive note, Asato really outdid herself in delivering the heartfelt scenes while still keeping the Legion plot nicely integrated. one of my favorite lines read: "The moment seemed to last an eternity—as if they had surrendered themselves to each other, body and soul." boom! straight out of a Jane Austen novel. some characters became more likable as well, like Anette and Vika, whom i used to hate before. last but not least, Shiden really carried the story. she's the realest.
No ahora.”
“Quiero permanecer a tu lado. Quiero estar contigo. Sí es posible… para siempre.”
“Tú me convertiste en lo que soy hoy. Fueron tus palabras las que dieron vida a la parte de mí que aprecio hasta hoy. Y así, tú… La persona que me cambió. La persona que me dio la vida. Te…
"Your being there made me believe... that I should live on."
"It's because you were there that I escaped the Eighty-Sixth Sector."
"I want to show you the sea... I want to see things we've never seen before, things yet obscured by the fires of war. I want to enjoy the same sights as you. I want to remain by your side. I want to be with you. Forever…if possible."
Eighty-Six: Volume 7 brings a much lighter tone and a nice break to the overall darker themes that the novels explore. Shin and Lena are finally able to face their growing feelings towards each other, but neither are brave enough to take that first step.
Shin’s character development, in my opinion, is up there with the greats in ani-manga. Him being able to find a reason to fight, after losing his brother, a reason to keep going, to reach that final destination, to show Lena the sea, is absolutely beautiful. Lena had been there for him at every step, she helped him escape the battlefield of the 86 Sector, she helped him realize that the battlefield isnt all that he needs to know, and that he can rely on her. Shin finally realizes that he wants to live, so that he can be with Lena, and its so heartwarming. Asato Asato delivers a masterpiece with this entry, and I cant wait to see where this series ends.

THEO'S GONNA LOSE HIS HAND NEXT VOLUME I AM NOT FUCKING READY YET. IT'S BEEN 3 YRS SINCE IVE KNOWN THIS INFORMATION YET IT STILL FRIGHTENS ME! I WISH NOT TO WITNESS IT . . . MY LOVE, THEOTO RIKKA
Now, I'll be honest, this volume was one of the easiest to get through and I enjoyed it quite a lot!
But why then am I giving it a meagre three stars you might ask? Well, because it was chockfull of every cliche you would find in a high school romance. From bathing scenes to pillow fights to misunderstandings to boundless jealousy to more misunderstandings! It had every ingredient that made it the most cliche high school romance you could think of. And yet, I still enjoyed it. Seeing the kids being kids was very fun. But all the same, I wish it wasn't so trope-y. Much as I love the developments between the characters, it could've been written in a better way, without making their teen-age so exaggerated.
That being said though, I'm excited to see what the eighth volume holds since now, finally, Shin and Lena have made some real progress in their relationship!
