Man I really wanted to love this, but unfortunately I was let down. This one is definitely my least favorite in the series so far.
THE PLOT
Persephone and Hades are finally engaged and, unfortunately for them, comes with a whole slew of problems and issues. Demeter, Persephone's mother, has unleashed a wintery hell on all of the mortal world because of their engagement. In order for gods to marry, Zeus and his oracle must approve of the marriage before an official ceremony can take place. This book goes through death of both mortals and gods alike, all because of Demeter's wrath. Lives are lost at the hand of an angry god who could not accept her daughter's choices.
MY THOUGHTS
My first thought after finishing this book was, why did there need to be so much sex? Don't get me wrong!!! I don't mind a good smutty book but the lengths this one go to is so unnecessary. Oh Persephone almost died? Sex. Oh someone you know died? Sex. Oh we're fighting a battle? Sex. Like dude...COME ON. 🙄 It was so frustrating!!! The smut really took up a good chunk of this book and didn't accentuate the plot which is where I have a problem.
I loved seeing the character development in Persephone. It was really apparent how much she evolved throughout this series and I really enjoyed that. The side characters of course were amazing and really carried a chunk of this book. It was also interesting being introduced to the other Gods, both good and bad. Hermes was a delight, of course, we love Hermes. Hades is my husband now (we're married) so Persephone can move out of the way. 😭 Every book I just love Hades more and more.
Overall, this book just didn't advance the plot until the last like 100 pages and it was a letdown. I wanted more action, more war, more politics between the mortals and Gods, give me SOMETHING. I felt like so many things were not finished and questions were not answered. Maybe it'll be in the last book when it releases, but as of right now, it feels unfinished. I am still very excited for the fourth book and will definitely be ordering it the second it comes out. Even though I found this one a bigger flop than the others, this is still one of my all time favorite series.
MY FAVORITE SCENES AND QUOTES
"I am not sure who you think I am, but let me be clear--I am Persephone, future Queen of the Underworld, Lady of Your Fate. May you come to dread my presence."
"It is not in my nature to appease mortals," Hades replied.
"But it is in your nature to appease me," Persephone said.
"Alas, you are my greatest weakness."
"It is you now, you forever."
"I never thought I'd thank the fates for anything they gave me, but you--you were worth all of it."
"All of what?"
"The suffering."
"And you? What other fantasies live in that head of yours?"
"Darling, every time I fuck you, it's a fantasy."
"Trust, darling, I will let no one--not king or God or mortal--stand in the way of making you my wife."
He was so beautiful and so broken.
"I love you too. More than anything."
They weren't powerful enough words, but she couldn't find the ones she needed, the ones she wanted. The ones that conveyed just how much her blood and bone, heart and soul aches for him.
"Even if the Fates unraveled our destiny, I would find a way back to you."
