Young Princess Juniper longs to ride unicorns like her older sister Princess Olivia. She hatches a plan to grow big. Will her plan work or will she learn an unexpected but important lesson instead?
This was a cute and fun story for kids! The writing was age-appropriate and it provides a fantastic book for kids graduating to chapter books. The story itself was not only fun and appealing for children but also contained a lesson. The situation presented is something applicable and relatable to children and the solution, while unexpected from the child’s perspective, is satisfying. Children will come away with a wonderful perspective on solving their troubles, accepting life and learning how to shine through it all.
I probably would have rated this lower but Maggie loved the story and wanted to give it a five. I felt like the pictures were low quality. I wished it was better.
Maggie says: Juniper was sad she was small and couldn’t ride the unicorns alone. Then she was happy because she was small and able to save Sparkles with the Marshmallow Plant. Then Juniper and Olivia rode Sparkles together and we’re so happy!
I have just started reading a few chapter books with my daughter, a kindergartener now obsessed with "big kid" chapter books. We read 1-2 chapters together a night. Although we've only gotten through about a dozen chapter books meant for her age, I - as a huge bibliophile all my reading age life - have had many critical responses to books meant for 5-6 year olds. The story is either too simple or too complicated, or the characters are simply unlikeable (such as, very self-entitled kids with NO lesson learned at the end!? What is UP with THAT message?). This book, however, was the first appropriate story and had a good lesson in it.
I'm so glad my daughter chose "The Princess and the Unicorn." The story is engaging without being too convoluted OR too simple for her age. The girl characters are super relatable and, for lack of a better word, normal... as in, they don't have super powers or some extra special characteristics. They're just girls, in a fantastical world, doing regular girl things and learning important lessons. I realize this may be my own bias, but for me personally I know there's a place for the whole "chosen one" fantasy adventure trope, but for a 5-6 year old I'd like to teach my daughter that "regular" girls are powerful in their own right. This book was it! I'm happy to purchase more books in this series.
I just finished reading this book to my granddaughter today and it was a great read for both of us! We now have a new author for this 6 year old to follow. It teaches children to be happy with who they are at each stage of their lives, and the moral of the story is more important in this day and age than ever before. She has a Mermaid Series that I feel will now be high on our list, as Sadie continues to find a continuing passion for books. I would recommend her books to any adults who read to children and are searching for the best in teaching our youth what should always be important as they read about acceptance throughout life.
A review from an almost 5 year old: “it’s really good, I read it with my mom. I loved it and I liked it because it was so amazing, I jus loved it. It was about two princesses and unicorns!”
From her mother: We read this together a little at a time and this book was super cute, just like the first one. Intermittent pictures, a good message, and a perfect book to get her started with chapter books at bedtime.
My 4-year-old loved this book and we can’t wait to read the rest of the series together. Getting to know the characters and the world were quite fun and I loved the tongue-in-cheek humor that was added for the sake of the parents. It was a nice short read for young children who enjoy being read to aloud but aren’t readers yet and it kept her engaged for the whole thing. We started it yesterday evening and she insisted I finish it this morning.
Very good book the whole thing was amazing! 1 part did say it was a little boring and yes I agree. But that was just 1 page then it was back you being awesome and it’s very short but the text is small so it’s like a big book but it’s not. Very good would probably read again and I would say yes to reading this book!
I read this to my five year old daughter and she loved it! The pictures included really helped keep her attention and the story is so cute and has a nice lesson for little ones.
Just finished reading this book with my second grade daughter. It’s such a sweet book and kept my daughter’s attention. We read it together. The words were easy enough for her to read to me. Looking forward to reading others!
I liked the lesson of this story. Juniper wanted to be tall like her sister so she could ride a unicorn like her sister. But because she was so short she was the only one who could help the unicorn that was sick-it’s ok to be YOU because you are perfect the way you’re made.
