David Walliams is an actor and writer best known for his work with Matt Lucas in the multi-award-winning sketch show Little Britain. His debut children's novel, The Boy in the Dress, was published in 2008 to unanimous critical acclaim and he has since developed a reputation as a natural successor to Roald Dahl.
Simon and I enjoyed the first book, Gangsta Granny, very much, so here we go again with the sequel! This volume features Queen Elizabeth II heavily. It's mischievously written and gave us lots of guffaws of laughter! It might just be better than the first book.
I just checked my review of the first book which I really enjoyed and for some reason thought that I read like two or three years ago maximum. I was so shocked to see that I read it in 2017 and here we are on the doors of 2024 so that means almost 7 years between the two books. I can't believe it.
It goes without saying that my tastes changed a lot during those years and also my reviews -yeah, my review of the first book sucks- I don't read a lot of YA and children books these days but there was something about the first book that really touched my heart, and it is probably the fact that it is a book about a granny, and I love mine so much.
I was excited to see where the story is going and although I can see it appealing for younger readers, the magic that captivated me as an adult was missing here. The first book had a certain depth to it that was missing here specially with it being a kid's book written with humor. Don't get me wrong, I would still recommend it to younger readers as it has the right amount of silliness, but I think it worked less for me as an older reader.
A return to form for Walliams! Hilarious, poignantish, and features the Queen sporting a lobster costume. What more could you want? Flavio Flavioli with a broken buttock! Hahahaha! I think this was written especially for me.
-------------------------- --------------------------
I was very curious to see what would happen in the second part. And then I was very irritated because Granny died between the first and second part, which is told on the first pages. Ben is sad about it, of course, but it's not described dramatically, because Granny has been dead for some time and Ben has had time to grieve. All the more exciting, of course, is the question of how the Gangsta Granny can strike again. And you just have to be surprised by that, because it was really unexpected. I laughed so much, I love David Walliams for his ideas. By the way, he reads the English audio book himself.
As usual David Walliams come out with witty book that mixture of fun, excitement and a bit of curiosity. This book definitely makes you glued to the chair. Book that you can read at one sit.
Although this book kinda humor, it still have interesting insights into parental expectations. Strong bonding between Ben and his granny makes him wanted to feels again the rushing of excitement when his granny was still alive.
Perfect balance of surprise elements and shocking truth. However I prefer the 1st book more than this sequel but any how pretty much enjoying this book too
Love Raj’s screen time! He is the absolute best! And the Queen! Oh gosh - Quite a scandal I must say! And I liked the book - but I enjoyed gangsta granny much better! Hence the 3 stars!
My 11 year old absolutely enjoyed this book and was excited to listen to me read a couple of chapters each evening. It was a lovely light hearted read that had my son laughing and excited to see what happened next. As always, there were some great characters, but my son's favourite will always be Raj who he hopes gets his own book one day. My son owns all of David Walliams' books and definitely seems to enjoy the earlier ones more, so was excited when this sequel came out
I read the first book with my 10 year old in 2013. Unfortunately, the 19 year old does not want to read the sequel with me anymore. Despite that, I still enjoyed the book. This was short and sweet, funny and very action packed and the lessons and realizations you will get out of it, just like the first book. Still as timely and appropriate. Oldies do have things in them and they may surprise you. PS. So I told my son what happened and got a smile. :)
Perskaičiau daug greičiau nei tikėjausi! Antra dalis šiek tiek geresnė už pirmąją. Atsirado personažų aprašymai, atsirado įvairesnių šriftų tekste - tai padarė knygą šiek tiek įdomesne. Istorija nebloga, skaitant truputį juokiausi. Įdėja senąją močiute plėšike pavaizduoti kaip katę man labai patiko.
I think that the book is full of exciting adventures with unexpected surprises which is my favourite type of books to read. The main character named ben, his gangsta granny passed away and started wanting to be a plumber instead of going on adventures. But what he doesn’t know is gangsta granny strikes again!
