3 ⭐️ This had enemies to lovers, bully, and arranged marriage trope. It was more of a prequel/short story ends in a cliffhanger. The hero was a evil psycho so yes I will be reading the full story when it’s released.
Luca and Liam De Vos are mafia princes being trained to run their fathers empire. Jill Baas wants nothing to do with Luca but when Luca wants something, he doesn’t take no for an answer. He always used to tease Jill growing up but they say you torment the one you really like. Two brothers about to gain everything but can one girl destroy their trust in eachother? Told from ages 9yrs old to young adults this is a prequel to an upcoming mafia series so it ends in a cliffhanger and what a cliffhanger it is!! I can’t wait to see what happens. Told in dual POV
The Wedding Debt by Clarissa Wild was full of dramatic emotions. It was spread across years and set in mafia world. It's a combination of enemies to lovers, bully and arranged marriage romance. . Jill Bass always liked Liam De Vos,the elder son of his father's business partner. Their family are involved in corrupt and dangerous mafia world. But it's the younger De Vos who wants her. And he cannot have her and that's why it's his life's mission to make Jill miserable. Through a series of unexpected and tragic events..Jill may finally need to surrender to the man she hates. . This story is not a standalone and ends in a cliffhanger. My favorite character was Luca. He is dark and twisted. He has a reckless and impulsive and cruel personality that has been a result of the mafia world he lives in. He always wanted Jill and you can feel the pain in his brutal ways. Other than that, the story felt like a collection of multiple incidences over the year without a way of me connecting with the characters and the feels. We were spending few moments with them and just when I start to feel the dynamics, the story is cut and we jump ahead in the timeline. Jill was a very average character though she had the great possibility of being a great one. The conflicts were forced upon and there are certain plot points those felt completely unbelievable to me. . I reviewed an early copy voluntarily
This could’ve been good if he wasn’t a massive manwhore who wanted to share her with his brother 🙄 I need a book with this premise but from a different author
The UNDERWORLD KINGS SERIES is a Multi-Author Series of standalone books, THE WEDDING DEBT is Clarissa Wild's contribution to the series and it's a great one!
This book is about two families that work closely together The Baas family has two daughters Jasmine and Jill and the De Vos family has two sons Liam and Luca so it's only natural that they would have the kids spend time together while they were in "meetings" and in this novella we get to see how things evolve between the four of them over a nine year span.
Liam and Luca are so very different from one another and even though both are learning the family business Liam will be the one to run it when the time comes, with this comes obligations to the family and one of those obligations is an arraigned marriage.
Jasmine and Jill are different as well but not as dramatically different as the brothers are. Jill is fiercely protective of her sister even though she is the younger one, and Jill is very creative if it was up to her she'd love to design clothes and not have anything to do with the family business.
This story has quite a few twists and turns and it leaves you with a surprising cliffhanger if you aren't aware of THE MARRIAGE DEBT already. I would suggest you be prepared because you're going to want it handy when you finish this book so you can jump right in and see what happens next. The majority of the books I have read in this series have been HFN or HEA's but this is the second one I have read that left us with a cliffhanger and I have to admit that I really dislike that but with this book I knew it before going in. With the other book I had read, I had no warning because none of the reviews I had read mentioned it which is why I am pointing it out in mine because you should be aware of the cliffy before you begin.
If you enjoy Mafia Romances, Dark Romances, Bully Romances or Enemies to Lovers Romances I would recommend this book to you.
Short book. Cute when they were little, but this is another sexist authors work where the H acts like a ho- even though he says he’s obsessed with the h - while the h remains a virgin.
Self note Authors writing isn’t descriptive enough. MCs appearance Is vaguely mentioned at 50%, until this point, you have no fucking idea what anyone or anything looks like. It’s like watching a movie where everything is fuzzy and the main characters faces are blurred out.
Not sure how to rate this one, tbh. This is one that I sped-read, but I did go through the whole thing. I feel that it’s definitely aimed for a younger audience, as it’s heavy on the YA/NA bully trope.
I picked it up since it’s mafia, and because I thought I would enjoy the story told from a character build up as childhood sweethearts, because I love the childhood sweetheart shtick. This was not that lol.
It is very heavy on the bullying, and they are in high school once the romance of the story starts. That being said, I’m going to peg that as my reason for not liking it - it’s a NA romance and those are absolutely not my thing.
Also, this is a story to be told in parts (you know this from the blurb), and there is a cliffy with a to be continued…. I normally can’t stand these publishing house money grabs, but it’s the trend and everyone’s got to make a buck, so whatever. Plus, I knew that when I decided to pick it up, so I’m willing to overlook this.
Basically it earns the two stars due to Wild’s writing skill, even though the plot is nothing new, nothing too exciting, and is overkill on the bully trope.
I think I’m good on YA/NA books for now. Just not enough romance for me, and I feel that other authors do the NA bully trope better, but I will read the second installment (but will stop there if there turns out to be a third; just not engaged enough).
Overall, just meh.
Will read the next installment, but don’t recommend, if that makes sense. Lol. Who even knows anymore. I am in a major book slump 🤷♀️
The Wedding Debt is a novella that will bring you into the world of Luca and Jill and their childhood lives. The Wedding Debt is the beginning of what is to be an incredible story of vengeance, enemies-to-lovers, arranged marriage, and whatever else Clarissa can throw
I couldn't put this book down while I watched Luca and his brother Liam try to find a way to negotiate between life and their parent's business. While the brothers are getting to know the family business, Jasmine and Jill are the sisters that could come between Liam and Luca.
This book does end in a cliffhanger and makes you excited about what is to come next.
This dark and decadent novella is filled with intoxicating intensity, raw emotion and enticing drama. This book begins Jill and Luca's story and oh, is shaping up into a juicy one. Tension, fiery sparks and a overall air of ferociousness inspire a delicious anxiety in the reader that will have you feverishly turning those pages. As This is only the start of this couple's tale, there is a looming cliffy and it is a stunner!! I need more ASAP!! I am independently posting an impartial review.
“He’d burn the world before letting her belong to someone else.”
✍️ Author Review This was a great introduction to this author. Clarissa Wild knows how to write tension. Her prose is sharp, her pacing on point, and she doesn’t waste time with fluff. This novella was all grit, obsession, and mafia politics and I was into it. An author who can make me rate a novella 4 stars is one I will definitely be reading more of! This was a tease and I can’t wait to fully dive into this world! (🤞please don’t let me down after hyping me up!)
🎧 Narration Review 🎙️ MK Blackwood: Delivered Jill’s POV with just the right mix of sass and vulnerability. Her voice carried the emotional weight without overdoing it. 🎙️ Gideon Frost: Gritty, intense, and perfectly suited for Luca’s brooding chaos. His delivery made Luca’s possessiveness feel palpable.
The dual POV worked well. It gave both characters space to breathe and made the tension between them even sharper. No complaints here.
📖 Book Review Enemies to lovers? Technically. There was a moment where it was enemies with benefits before going right back to hate-fueled chaos. 😏🥵This novella was 90% enemies, 10% spice, and 0% resolution… but ohhh that 10%? 🔥 Worth it. Normally I side-eye novellas, but between the mafia drama, the tension, and Luca being dark, possessive, and absolutely not about to let his brother claim what he wants? Yeah, I was feral. Luca is the kind of possessive anti-hero who doesn’t ask for permission. No happily ever after yet, but I’ll be here front row waiting for the lovers part to crash the party. 💋
💭 Overall Thoughts This novella didn’t try to wrap things up in a neat bow — and thank God for that. It’s the kind of setup that makes you need the next book (The Marriage Debt, I’m coming for you). If you’re into possessive anti-heroes, mafia family drama, and a slow burn that starts with fire and ends in smoke, this one’s worth the listen.
Recommended for fans of dark romance, mafia drama, and enemies-to-lovers tension with no immediate payoff. I’ll definitely continue the series — I need to see these two go from enemies to lovers, preferably with more spice and less family interference.
@goodfuknggirl Book Review Rating System ⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Excellent An emotionally engaging and enjoyable read, with just enough sparkle to make me consider rereading even if it’s missing that final ingredient to land it a permanent spot in my literary Hall of Fame. • Fast-paced and immersive, despite a few hiccups. • Strong emotional payoff, if not soul-shattering. • A worthy addition to my shelves… perhaps even a physical copy. • Will likely recommend to friends and readers of the genre. • It left me wanting more, in a “this book hugged my brain” kind of way. This one’s just shy of legendary. 💅
MY RATING: 2.5* RELEASE DATE: 01 November 2021 CLIFFHANGER: Yes
ARC was kindly provided for an honest review
This is my first book by this author. This story takes a big dollop of arrange marriage, throws in a dash enemy to lovers, a splash of bully romance and comes up with a melt pot of mafia romance deliciousness.
The Bass and De Vos families are friends and business partners dealing heavily in all things illegal. Like most mafia romances, their children are part of the currency to prosperity and power. Jill is the youngest of the Bass girls. Unlike her sister, she has a hard time accepting the life and family she was born into. Liam is the older of the De Vos brothers, he too finds it hard to accept the future that is awaiting him. I suspect as a result; Jill has been nursing a crush on Liam all her life. They are similar in a lot of ways.
Unfortunately, Luca being the youngest is often overlooked over his brother. He unlike, Liam actually loves the blood and gore that comes with his family business. But he loves nothing more than Jill. For years he is tormented and riddled with resentment that not only will he not get the keys to the empire, but he won’t get the girl he wants either. So, he makes it his life mission to make Jill as miserable as possible. The mafia version to pulling pigtails in the playground. An unfortunate sequence of events flips the script on everybody and the families find themselves at odds and having to rearrange all prior made plans.
The story had potential, but the execution was
First of all, it was too short. I read it in 2 hours and found myself thinking “wtf”? Most of all, there was a gel missing in the story. There was too much jumping from one scene to another. It felt like a collection of events that were cut and pasted into order. Just when you thought this was happening, we cut and move onto another scene. There wasn’t a proper build up, or flow in the story or its characters. There was so much potential to really build up on the tension and angst between Luca and Jill when Luca found out the plans made for Jill and Liam. Instead, they fell out. Which in of itself felt forced and really unnecessary.
This book is short, but oh so intense…. And it’s rumoured to be a prequel to a new series (I’m keeping my fingers crossed it’s true)
Luca and Liam are brothers, they are also being groomed to take over the Mafia kingdom and rule one day.
Luca is so intense, and definitely my favourite brother (he brings bad boy to a new level) his obsession with Jill has only grown over the years, and his childhood teasing has definitely grown darker with time. In fact I’d say it borders on being a bully (but there is a fine line between love and hate!)
Jill and her sister Jasmine have known Luca and Liam since they were kids, they also knew that one day a marriage of convenience would be arranged between the families. Both sisters would do anything for the other one, and in this story, blood is definitely thicker than water. Sacrifices are made, and alliances are broken!
We get snatched of their lives growing up in this story. We also get to see how Luca behaves around Jill. What we don’t expect is the twist that took me by surprise.
It’s a great start to what I’m hoping is a new book soon 😉
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
Some boys are popular. Some boys are heartthrobs. But Luca and Liam De Vos? They have what not other boys in my school have. Power. They're heirs to one of the biggest mafia empires in the Netherlands. And now our parents are doing business together. They're dangerous boys that get everything they need with one snap of a the finger. But boys like them always want what they can't have. The young brother, Luca, can't stop teasing me. And it makes me hate him. So I fight back by going after his brother instead. But when boys like Luca don't get their way, they will find one. We're like fire and gasoline. All he had to do...was light the match.
I am so love this Underworld Kings Series. If you have been reading them as they release then you know that we have gotten some amazing reads so far. The Wedding Debt is no exception to that rule. I loved it so much. Luca and Liam De Vos are mafia princes who are being trained to run their fathers empire one day. Jill is a girl that grew up with these boys and was tormented by Luca. She knows these boys are about to inherit everything but can one simple little girl that has be picked on her entire life almost by one of them bring the empire down in flames? This book was so good. I didn't lay it down until I was finished. I love the way Clarissa Wild tells mafia stories. I will tell you so you're not shocked that this is a prequel to her upcoming series. The first book being The Marriage Debt. And the even better news is it's listed to be released in January. Something super exciting to look forward too after the holidays for sure. I sure can't wait to get that book in my hands.
☆☆☆☆ The Wedding Debt was a quick taste of a new series that delivers an angsty, emotional punch. This is a prequel to a new series by Clarissa Wild although it is still a part of The Underworld Kings series by different authors who excel at mafia romance. This is an enemies to lovers + bully + arranged marriage combined trope. It focuses on Luca De Vos and Jill Bass. Luca, his older brother, Liam, Jill and her sister have grown up around each other with their parents being a big part of the Netherlands mafia. Jill has been in love with Liam but Luca has been in love with Jill. Luca let’s the ruthless world around him infuse his hateful actions toward Jill. Since this is such a short read, I don’t want to give away too much. Just know it was a page turner from the get go. I really wanted more time and character development with the main characters but just when it starts getting good, we get slammed with a cliffhanger. This is only the beginning for these two and I’m really looking forward to how it all plays out. This is my honest opinion, freely given.
Luca & Liam De Vos are powerful mafia princes who are being trained up to take over the family business. Jill & her sister Jasmine are the princesses of their father's organization and the two families are intertwined. Their two families have agreed that two of them will marry someday, and Luca wants Jill, but she despises him. I mean, he did go overboard to bully her so he can't be too surprised, but Luca is something else. If he can't have her, he's going to make her life a living hell so it was hard to warm up to him at this point, and I say this point because this is just the tip of the iceberg for a new series. It's a short(ish) read that packs a big punch with a brutal cliffhanger ending as Clarissa Wild is laying the foundation for some serious business ahead, and I'M HERE FOR IT ALL and that's all I'm going to say about that! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
“She’s everything I shouldn’t ever want, everything I couldn’t ever have. She’s…Everything.”
Jill and Luca have been known each other since they were children because their families do business together. During those years Luca has done everything he can to push Jill away and make her hate him. Then some information is revealed that ends up changing everything.
This was such a quick read that drew me in from the beginning. I loved the dual POV because you see how much what Luca does and says affects Jill and you also see exactly how Luca feels about Jill and why he does what he does. The dynamic between these two characters is incredible and I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens with them. This is a novella so it’s short but there’s a lot of information packed into it. I’ve seen a lot of people say that it ends on a cliffhanger but to me it’s not. Do I want to read the next book to see what happens? Yes, but that’s what all authors, or at least good ones, do with their writing. So while I’m excited to read the next book and see what happens with Luca and Jill, I’m not curled up a ball in the corner rocking back and forth waiting on it. All of that aside, it’s still a good read that will suck you and leave you wanting more.
“You can’t ever do anything that will NOT make me want you.”
*I was given an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Jill grew up with Luca and Liam. While they are two completely opposite brothers they left a lasting impression on her. As they continued to grow up their feelings only grew stronger and things became more complicated as their parents dictated their lives without so much a consideration as to their wishes. Lines are crossed and feelings are betrayed. Can the two families come back from this or will the consequences out weight any negotiations?
The Wedding Debt is a quick and enjoyable read. I was able to read it in one sitting. I am curious as to how the author will continue with this story. I have my theory with Liam. So I am looking forward to book two.
Luvs and Liam are powerful mafia princes and will one day rule their father’s empire. Jill has known the brothers since they were kids but when Luca begins to torment her she goes after the brother. Will Luca get what he wants? Fast-paced read with loads of drama, suspense, and steam. Great start to a new series, looking forward to more?
I have been enjoying all the books so far in the Underworld Kings series. Each author has given us a little bit of life in the underworld. This book takes place over several years but yet is really a short novella that ends on a cliff hanger with the promise of the full story to come.
We have two families in the crime world. One with two boys and one with two girls. Behind the scene you get the sense that promises have been made. Yet Jill and Luca seem to always be at each others throats. While the older siblings are more relaxed around each other.
This story is at it seems, an introduction to something more. It is very different from the already released books in the series. Other than a couple of mentions about Ruin, you would not really get the sense that the book belongs with the others. Most of the story takes place in the Netherlands. We do get some mafia action in this one. As as stand alone book, i would maybe be more interested in the compete story. As is, it did not tie in to the rest of the series for me.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Wedding Debt by Clarissa Wild is a dark romance with twists and turns. Luca and Liam De Vos are brothers who are part of the Mafia. They are being prepared to carry on the family business. Liam is next in line to become prince.
Jill is raised in a family who dealings are shady. She wants no part of the business and just wants to live how she sees fit. Her parents are business associates with Luca and Liam De Vos family, and she feels disdain towards Luca. He is arrogant, rude and gets under her skin. This makes Luca and Jill hate each other whenever they are around each other.
Jill and Luca relationship becomes entangle with heat and bad-tempered moments.
The story ends in a CLIFF-HANGER and will continue to unfold in The Marriage Debt coming out next year to continue with Jill’s and Luca’s story.
My rating for this story is 3-stars. The story was interesting but did have it moments where it was scrambled in some parts. Will read the next book in this duet to see what becomes of Jill and Luca! First time reading from this author and am looking forward to reading more by Clarissa Wild!
Ok I just have to say this was going to be like a five star read and then it leaves in a cliffhanger and I have to buy the next book to see what happens…..REALLY! It’s like a con of the worst kind! I get that the author wants you to read more of her stuff but this just makes really upset
All the other books ended so why would I think that this would end like it did!
WOW, what a cliffhanger! This book… there’s a lot to unpack. This book is dark, edgy, raw, suspenseful, and it’s an emotional rollercoaster as we ride every high and hit the withdrawal symptoms that the characters encounters. This is Luca and Jill’s story. This is an arranged Mafia marriage and enemies to lovers romance. Luca is very handsome, has a temper, arrogant, cold-hearted, and he wants what he can’t have—Jill. Luca De Vos and his older brother, Liam, are Mafia princes who are being trained to take over their father’s organization. Jill Baas and her older sister, Jasmine, were considered princesses of their father’s organization. Jill always liked/loved Liam, but loathed Luca—they were like poison together with no antidote—because Luca always ridiculed her and bullying her. “Sometimes, I lie.” “Why?” I say, as he backs me into the wall again. “To make it easier for you to hate me.” All four of them have known each other all their lives, and when their families decided that an arranged marriage will be between two of the four when they are of age, it was not the decision and the person that Luca wanted to hear. That day changed both Jill and Luca’s lives after a tragedy occurred, turning their lives upside down and their beginning into something toxic. What could have happened? What happens next? Well, read this amazing story and find out—you won’t regret it! There are several twists and turns within the story that will tempt the characters in ways they could have never envisioned. Clarissa Wild delivered a powerful and emotional, intense, and all-consuming story that left me obsessed and yearning for more. The anticipation of the next book will be really succulent. I can’t wait to find out what happens next! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
The Wedding Debt is the first book in a duet and ends in a cliffhanger. This duet is part of the Underworld Kings Series bringing us all the dark mafia romance. This is a quick, dark mafia , bully read with an arranged marriage twist too it. There is an extremely fine line between love and hate. Luca straddles that line like it’s his bitch. Jill is caught between youthful fantasies and the deep needs Luca brings to the surface. Luca embraces his life and his servitude to his family and all Jill feels is smothered by it. It will be interesting how their story plays out.
Jill Baas has grown up groomed for the mafia life, but not wanting it. She has known Luca De Vos most of her life and has hated him just as long. Now his brother Liam on the other hand, he’s a kindred spirit. Luca is all kinds of dark and dirty.
This book is told thru dual perspective and takes us from Jill and Luca age 9 until about age 21.
Their parents have a plan to merge their families and solidify their businesses. And, their children have no say. But, when Luca’s love disguised as hate sends Jill running to Liam for answers, the storm raging outside has nothing on the storm within Luca.
A spontaneous decision made sets Jill’s life on another course. But, the ties that bind her to her family are too strong.
