I was inclined to giving this novel 4 stars as it took me a while to get into the story. The pacing seemed somewhat rushed and it took me maybe 20/30 pages to get into the story.

However, once this novel sank its teeth into me, I devoured it in one sitting! This is thoroughly entertaining, gripping, fast-paced and I cannot wait for the next book. Excellent action sequences really hit the spot. The involvement of mythological gods, monsters and shape-shifters was genius. Highly imaginative, enjoyable storytelling.

Will review shortly on my channel. This author needs more recognition.

AMAZING BOOK. Came up under my suggestions and GoodReads was right, I absolutely loved this book! A lot of cliffhangers and a lot of what if questions, I cannot wait until the next one comes out!

Horror, Urban Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, Cozy? JUST AWESOME!

Wow! This has been on my TBR for too long and I finally read it and I am so glad I did! I LOVED this book.

The setting is the 1600s and feels historical but modern in the best way, which gives it an urban fantasy vibe. But it also screams dark fantasy with clans, politics, and a world that feels alive. At times it can also be funny, sweet, and cozy. Then, of course, we have vampires!

The characters were incredibly well done. I loved Simon, our MC and main POV. But the side characters had depth and felt alive and I fell in love with them as well. There is AMAZING banter and humor in this book, but it is balanced with action, terror, and a dash of romance. There is hope and light, but there is also darkness.

There are twists and turns, swerves, surprises. Moments that will make you laugh, make you cheer, and make you cry. It was a roller coaster I highly recommend anyone take and I am so stoked for the next one!

When vampires first came into being, the original vampire, Dracula, scoured the globe, looking for the most elite to pass on his gift of eternal life to. He set up several clans of vampires in various corners of the globe, and established a set of rules and regulations that they must follow. Simon, a young (by comparison) vampire is a member of the Nigrum Gladio—an order dedicated to keeping the peace. Through his adventures, he’s developed a reputation as the premier hunter of things that go bump in the night. Along his trials, he befriends and falls in love with a woman from one of the opposing clans. But their star-crossed love is forbidden and his greatest quest becomes fighting against all odds to stay together.

“More Than A Vampire” was an interesting opening to the series from Joseph Carrel. It was reminiscent of tales from Greek mythology of heroes taking on epic quests and monster slaying. Most of the narrative felt like following a character through side quests while their ultimate goal was to reunite with the woman they love. The story was never wanting for action, and fight scenes were often well designed and thoroughly descriptive. All in all, I enjoyed the ride this story took me on.

Set in the 1600's this is the story of Simon, a Vampire whose job it is to hunt rogue Vampires for his clan and he's very good at it . For over 200 years he has hunted and killed all those who threaten the stability or exposer of the clan. But not only are changes happening in the wider Vampire world, but he meets the free spirited, headstrong and passionate Lina. Now Simon is in love and faced with a choice, love or loyalty? This book is a wonderful debut novel. It is fast moving and for the most part a riotous almost swashbuckling Adventure and is perfectly paced. There is lots of action and it is well handled, there is an impressive cast of monsters, spirits, gods and wizards and there is a certain playfulness devil may care cast to Simon and his interactions. For the most part Simon is likable and narrates the story well. You find yourself really hoping he can do the things he sets out to accomplish. Don't get too comfortable though as there is a twist and the book ends with you really hoping book two doesn't take too long to come around.

A lot for me to like in this book. Some great character development, and explained power creep. A ton of worldbuilding. And a take on vampires that I actually enjoy.

Some things I didn’t love quite as much, but they didn’t detract too much from the story IMO. Mainly, more adult content (sexual content and language) than I would prefer.

That being said, the story itself was solid, and with the globe-trotting nature of it, it was just a lot of fun. Simon, our main character also has a great backstory.

I think my on a sheer enjoyment level, I liked Gunslinger better, but there’s a lot of things in terms of the plotting and outlining of Vampire that I appreciate more.

"More Than a Vampire” is a character focused story told from the protagonist’s point of view. At first glance, the plot comes across as a meandering series of seemingly disconnected events that take place over a fifty year period of time. The only through-line of this entire novel is Simon’s relationship with Lina, and their perpetual desire to reunite whenever duty pulls them apart. Other than that, there really is no conflict and the stakes seem pretty superficial in the grand scheme of things.

Vampires have been done before but not quite like this; an original take on the origin and development of vampire culture. Throw in a little historical reference points, a love story, and a hodgepodge of heroes, monsters and gods and you have an epic tale that doesn't need a thousand pages to tell. The plot is a little slow to get going but Simon is a likable and it is worth following his development. I was not expecting where this went in the last third or THAT ENDING. The audio narration was very good. Very well done indy-pub.

I enjoyed the dual narration of Benjamin Crow and Kirsty Geddes

We first meet Simon, a Vampire, in the 1600s. His job it is to hunt rogue Vampires for his clan . 200 years he has hunted and killed those who threaten his clan. Changes are happening in Vampire world. He meets Lina whose free spirited, and passion, makes Simon fall in love. Simon must know choose between love or loyalty.

This book has humour, action, pace and a wonderful set of characters of monsters, spirits, gods and wizards

That was something I did not expect, but was truly floored by. Great job by JR Carrel. I can't wait for another one of his book!

More than a vampire indeed!
This book has werewolves, Odin, Ra, the Pied Piper, and the chupacabra, along with myths from Native America, Africa, the South Pacific, and all over the world, taking a bite out of each of them. It has a bit of an episodic feel, which makes the book feel like a series of short stories more than a single narrative. The audiobook performer shares duty with a female performer, which really helps the dialogue retain the sexual tension between our two main characters.
