A bit disappointing after the first book
I really loved our heroine, Honor, in the first book. So I was really disappointed in how things evolved with her in this book. Don’t get me wrong, it is still a good book, and I do intend to read the next book in the series. The pacing was very good, the world building was very good. And we learned a little bit more about Honor’s background, as well as some more information around the dragon royals themselves.
My disappointment was the additional character building, particularly our FMC. I guess this may be a case of too much of a good thing. While I loved Honor’s sarcastic comebacks in the first book, they just really got to be a bit too much in this book for me. I mean, at the end of Forbidden Honor she was beaten so badly, her muscle and bone were visible on her back. I find it very hard to believe that someone in that state would be as sarcastic as she still was, as well as wanting to have sex! I mean just no. I understand I’m reading a work of fiction, and I understand that I still want a “happily ever after,” but I still want a little bit of a sense of reality. She was enchanted so that she couldn’t heal the way most supernaturals do. So that means she would be healing like a human. I have to believe, given the severe beating like that, she would have been unconscious for at least a couple of days and really out of it for at least a week if not more.
Perhaps RH stories are no longer my jam, because next up are the things that bothered me around her building relationship with her harem. First of all I think I prefer smaller harems better if I’m going to continue reading this sub-genre. She has 2 men that she has done the deed with, Talisyn and Jaik. In a way that wasn’t too much of a stretch, because apparently those two have shared women before. But there does seem to be a jealousy component here that they’re kind of working through. I didn’t mind that because it seemed to be more organic for me. It’s looking like she’ll be adding Jaik’s brother, Caldren, to the mix as well as the twins, Branok and Lynx (I think I love Lynx just a little). And the final royal dragon, Arren, seems to be fighting his attraction to her as well. (Now his sarcastic comments and barbs are the unsung hero of this book, but I digress). So that’s 5 guys . . . And with her lusty comments about a sixth dragon, Damyn, it could be 6 guys! I’m still on the fence about Damyn, it could go either way. So exactly how many hunks does a girl need? And at what point are there diminishing returns about having that many hot alpha males after you? I’m sure there are reverse harem stories out there that have larger harems, but I think for me I’m gonna probably stick to smaller ones from here on out. I just find it hard to believe that that many men would be willing to share a woman, particularly when they are written as so strong and handsome that they could definitely get a high value woman of their own. I mean why share? And this notion of “I’d rather have some of her that none of her” is just really nauseating to me.
Next up, that seemed to be a real issue for me, is Honor inserting herself into Caldren and Jaik’s relationship. She keeps referring to it as a “childish rivalry,” and keeps attempting to force a reconciliation when she has no idea of the history between these two. I just find it very aggravating when people think they know better than the people involved in the relationship themselves. And for her to treat both of them as if their problems in the relationship are childish, is the height of arrogance and made her even more annoying to me.
Other than these few issues, that were pretty big ones for me, I did enjoy the storyline. So it’s not that I wouldn’t recommend this book or the series to anyone, but I definitely would caveat it. It could be that my sensibilities would not be the same issue for other readers. So I guess you’ll just have to decide for yourself.
