Evil is real. When an orphan discovers she’s a descendant of a powerful warrior, can she survive long enough to become humanity’s protector?
Chicago. Aspen Van Der Klay knows the ugliness of the world. Taking to the streets after her beloved mom’s death, the resilient teen battles the elements and scrounges for food to keep herself from becoming a sad statistic. But when a handsome stranger saves her from an actual demon, she can’t believe it when he claims her weird birthmark proves she carries the blood of an ancient guardian.
Swept into a society she never dreamed existed, the plucky young woman strives to complete high school before entering a special academy to begin her training. But when the drop-dead gorgeous guy who saved her is more interested in investigating disappearances than mentoring her, Aspen comes face to face with a fiendish ambush.
As the strong-willed would-be savior fights to prove she belongs, can she keep from being the next hunter to vanish?

I devoured these four stories and wish there was more! Aspen is a delightful main character who is flawed but trying to do her best and learning how to be a guardian and fight demons. This story takes you on a journey and makes you think about the choices we make and how our enemies may not be who we originally thought. There is redemptive power in loving someone enough to sacrifice for them. Soul mates and reincarnation bring interesting ideas to the story. A fun escape from the real world.
Very good. This story of a first year Guardian student and an original demon is excellent from beginning to end and you don't want to put the books down.
