It was supposed to be a simple job: go to the private island, find the missing billionaire.
Instead, tracker Tye Caine and his friend Gary find themselves caught in a dark conspiracy that blends ancient artifacts with modern technology.
Hunted by an unseen gunman, stalked by dark shapes in the forest, Tye and Gary must first unlock the decades-old secret of the island, then understand the modern-day technological terror that is about to be unleashed.
Tye will need all his wilderness skills to survive this one.
If you stayed up too late reading The Valley Of Lost Children, if you love mysteries set in the wilderness, if you aren’t afraid of the supernatural, buy Primitive Weapons today.
As much as I enjoyed the first Tye Caine mystery, I still somehow found myself caught flat-footed by Primitive Weapons. This was one of those rare instances where I had settled down for a good read and found the book grabbing me by the collar, jerking me off the couch and taking me for a run in the woods. The pace here is fantastic--steady and brisk, but never rushed--and I was delighted to find that even with action popping on every page, the tale still found a way to build upon the relationships and the inner lives of the cast of returning characters. The few smoky whiffs we got of the supernatural in the first book are now building into a proper bonfire, all while the theme of "primitive" approaches to modern problems comes more clearly into view. Y'all, this is a heck of a book! I read entertaining adventure novels all the time, but this one is really inspiring.
Book 2, Primitive Weapons is as enjoyable as book 1 in The Ty Caine Mystery Series. Again, we find Ty, the leading character, experiencing unexpected and often vivid, frightening dreams about the future. This book is a sure fire winner for action lovers. I enjoy the subtle humor that occasionally pops up. I especially liked the coffee humor. The only reason for the 4 stars is the constant, distracting mispronounced words by the virtual voice. Chapter 41 is a prime example with the mispronounced word "bow" (in addition to other same spelling/different sounding words throughout the story). In my humble opinion, while using a virtual voice substitute for a human actor, I feel it is the responsibility of the author to review his/her own work to assure the prose is clean when using heteronyms (homographs).
I enjoyed this book. I liked the characters, the story line and the pace of the book. There were a few areas where it was hard to put down which is awesome. Overall, though, as an adventure and a mystery it is an easy, simple read. Some of the bad characters were kind of shallow. There was a little romance mixed in as one of the main characters had feelings for one of the other characters which was often brought up when the two characters were together. People died without much emotion and some of the events, like the escape from the island, was just a little too easy. This book is an enjoyable, easy read.
Another one that I thoroughly enjoyed! Similar twists are employed but they're not identical and seem to be forming part of an overall series story arc so I'm looking forward to seeing where they go next. The setting, in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest, isn't one I've come across very often and it's effective, particularly as it's a part of the world I loved when I was travelling through it a few years back. As someone who's dabbled in archery on and off for decades I also like those elements and approve of the main character's preference for the unadorned long bow, something I also prefer. Off to find the next book now!
So engrossing I read it in a day. I found it in my library after finishing Valley of Lost Children and reading the free novella so I just had to carry on with the series. It doesn't take long for things to get complicated when Tye takes a job on and Gary is drawn into his vision as well. Continuity with the animal helper theme is a bit of fun as well, the tiger and the cow after the bear in the first book. His romance with Kaity seems to be coming along, nice set of characters and setting up for another book with the carving and the villain escaping at the end.
This was a good book with some different twists and plotlines which made it interesting. The main characters were likable, especially the sidekick Gary - I really liked his humor and good common sense. The main character Tye was good too, but a bit more needy. It was interesting to see these men handle themselves so well in outdoor, difficult situations. The plight they were hired to handle was unusual and made for a good plotline.
This action adventure novel was ok but not great. The premise was good - a couple of adventure types are hired to look for a missing rich guy on a private island. They end up not able to trust anyone they encounter in the investigation. However, none of the characters were particularly likeable, the story was not believable and the writing was pedestrian.
This is another deep dive into wilderness tracking, with the brilliantly-conceived protagonist/hero, Tye Caine, who continues to be gifted with enigmatic dreams and visions. The theme of nature vs artifice also continues, with emphasis on the counterpoint of ethics vs capitalistic greed. There is a surprise at every twist and turn in the plot. A great read!
I’d like to classify this as a “man’s man book” and yet I kept reading to the end. It’s a real blend of mystery and suspense, high-tech/low-tech, and a touch of supernatural. Once in a while I felt a little lost in the jungle of the plot just like the characters, but the twists and turns are probably what held me. It’s an adventure you might enjoy.
I got most of the books in this series on sale one day on Amazon and I actually let them sit a while before I got around to them. I would have jumped in much sooner if I knew I would enjoy them this much. Great stories. The tracking and woodsmanship are well written, which I love because so many books kind of gloss over those without any explanations. Lots of humour. On to book three.
This is a brilliant series with a well developed character/hero along with the other characters. I am thoroughly enjoying this series and will definitely be getting the other books in the series. If you like books with adventure and with a bit of thriller and just a hint of supernatural then give this series a go, you won't be disappointed.
I liked the point of view and how the book works out between two close friends it helps the action to move along. It was an interesting story. Tye as a character was a little bit too super human and less belieable so only four stars.
Unique take on a tracker. Tye is an interesting character in that he has extra capabilities that save him and his colleagues. I like the way the spirit was woven into the story. Good job, look forward to another one.
I love the character Tye Caine and going along on his adventures with his friends. This page turning mystery keeps the reader involved right until the end. Dave Barbur well done!
An absorbing and entertaining read. Characters develop along with the plot as the story unfolds. Plenty of action some engaging twists and turns and pleasant light hearted moments crea t a very enjoyable story.
This book starts well and keeps going to keep you reading, the character's seem to drag you Until the story. I read this book in one sitting, my wife complained for me to go to bed. I did when I had finished early hours of the morning. Great read would recomend.
I am so glad the 2nd book by this author is Just as good as the first !! More action, fantastic writing and the same great characters, what is not to like !!!! Thanks for your good books.
A bit of everything but not to much: Murder and mayhem, ghosts, humor and romance. Interesting characters. Hard to put down story. Second in series was just as good as the first. Now on to # three. Way to go David Barbur !
this was a solid, well written page turner. It's a bit of a Bondish fantasy about super human skills but using the skill set of a wilderness guy, as opposed to an assassin.
I started reading the first book after finishing #2 Primitive weapons. I'll likely read more of the author's stuff.
I enjoyed book one more but book two was a decent time. I like Gary and Tye being on an adventure together. I would say this is more 3.5 than a 4 but I definitely plan on reading the rest of the series either way you look at it.
