The Birthday Party

Rate this book
Charlotte waves at her mother across the crowded lawn. Little red boots on, cowboy hat crooked over her blonde pigtails, she’s been looking forward to this party for weeks. Moments later, she disappears without a trace…

Kathy Hamilton drives away from her sister-in-law’s pristine-white suburban house in Maple Falls certain she’s left her daughter in safe hands. On the hottest day of the year, a birthday is the perfect excuse to gather friends, family and neighbors around the pool for a barbecue. But when she returns hours later to find her little girl has vanished, her world shatters.

Nobody laughing and drinking in the garden that day saw anything unusual.

Kathy’s eldest daughter is anxious and hardly eating. Is she sick with worry for her sister, or hiding a terrible secret?

The phone rings and rings, but why can’t Kathy get hold of the babysitter?

And is she imagining it, or when her husband rushed from work to join the search, was he wearing a different shirt to the one she saw him leave the house in that morning?

As the temperature rises, and long-buried secrets begin to surface, it’s clear that even the most perfect families keep devastating secrets. But in a town as small as this, is there anyone you can trust?

A totally gripping and utterly addictive page-turner that will have you racing through and reeling at the twists. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Gone Girl and Teresa Driscoll, it will keep you up reading all night long!

The first half starts off great. I can picture this abduction happening. My heart was pounding for little Charlie. Then the second half came around with the twists. First, by 70% I had most of it worked out. The twists I didn't know were so unbelievable, there is no way that was happening in real life. I know life is quirky strange even but come on. Overall, it is a solid thriller that has been done before.

On the hottest day of the year, Kathy Hamilton drops her five-year-old daughter Charlie off at a family birthday party, certain she's in good hands at her brother-in-law's house in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the quiet town of Maple Falls. But hours later, there's no sign of her anywhere...

All is not as it appears to be as the people closest to Charlie have plenty to hide. And in a town where reputation is everything, just how far are any of them willing to go to make sure that their secrets stay hidden? This book has many things I enjoy in a thriller: family secrets/drama, small-town setting, possibly unreliable narrators (I suspected everyone at some point) mixed in with some police procedural. The story flows effortlessly and kept me guessing. I had no idea who the culprit was. The author did cleverly drop a few clues about the culprit, and while I picked on it and had a feeling it would play a role in the story, I had no idea just how big of a role it would be. It was interesting seeing everything come together and how everyone was connected. The conclusion is heartbreaking but I'm glad there was justice in the end.
All in all, I thought this was a gripping thriller. This is the second book I have read from this author and I will definitely be picking up more of her books in the further.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The birthday party by Wendy Dranfield was a amazing book!!

Kathy drops her very excited child to her cousins birthday party. She leaves her daughter in what she believes are capable hands but when she actives home and realises the baby sitter Megan isn't there with Charlie she starts to panic. Charlie is gone! When the police artive Kathy Is stunned to see her childhood sweetheart is the Detective on the case.

I absolutely love Wendy Dranfield, I have read her crime series and they have never let me down! Although the birthday party is a stand alone book it's just as good. We have three main characters Kathy, Megan and Chase. Most of the book is from Kathy and Megan's POV they are both really interesting women and I enjoyed both of them.

Kathy Is a mum of two with a past that still haunts her. So the shock of Chase being the Detective on the case brings her back to the past. We get to read her present day and when she is a teenager. I was so interested in both of the time lines. I wanted to find out what the big secret was and how or if it links to her present day. I did manage to guess about 75% of the way through and OMG what a frigging twist I honestly cannot say anymore. Even once I guessed I had to keep reading to check I was correct. It was one of those books that I read and wanted to discuss it with someone anyone straight away!!

Megan the babysitter was a really cool character. She is so attached to Charlie and is very distressed when she is told she's gone missing. After she has been injuries she moves into the home with Kathy and her family. It's a strange arrangement and the more I read the more questions I had. She was actually my favourite character in the book. Her pov was great I enjoyed reading it. She's dealing with addiction issues and the worry of Charlie's disappearance is a trigger. She's so worried about Charlie maybe a bit too worried.

Now Chase is a darling and I think I want to marry him ha. He is clearly hung up on Kathy all these years later and they still clearly have a spark He is torn between doing his job and protecting Kathy and her family. But wirh the family being caught in lie after lie he has to push his feelings and look harder..

The novel covers some very sensitive issues, addiction, abuse and obviously kidnapping. Each is covered so well I honestly the subjects made me even more engrossed in each character, bar the husband I wasn't a fan of him!! I wanted to find out more and more about the characters I really enjoyed following this hard hitting thriller.

Wendy Dranfield has a way with words and if you've read her crime series you will enjoy this one. As a stand alone sometime I find it difficult to connect to the characters but here that wasn't the case. I found the book was full of great descriptions and it really help you feel like you are there.

All in all I totally recommend the birthday party, it's a great crime thriller and has characters with great depth and backstories the twists just keep coming and if you manche to guess it well done it took me a while! Honestly I so enjoyed this book. Great start to 2022. Easy 5 stars

Thank you to Bookouture, Wendy Drainfield and netgalley for rhe the ARC of the birthday party.

Wow, I loved this audiobook! Just the kind of captivating listen I needed right now.
This was my first Dranfield novel, but I will definitely be putting her on my radar after this!
When you listen to an audiobook in 2 days, in between work and you use any housework jobs as an excuse to listen, you know you have a belter!
This gave me so many emotions- anguish, shock, trauma, and I loved it all.
The characters were well defined, and even though there were many suspects in Charlie's disappearance, I never felt confused about who anyone was.
That plot! Always gripping and the clues being dropped were amazing. There were so many twists to the story to keep me thinking.
Fantastic book!

This an author I have been meaning to read for sometime and having done so now look forward to reading other books she has written.

Charlotte is attending a family birthday party she has been looking forward to for sometime. When her mother Kathy Hamilton waves goodbye to her she is unaware of the events that are to follow. Shortly after arriving at the party Charlotte disappears and the hunt begins.

The party was held at Kathy’s sister-in-law’s house in Maple Falls and on the hottest day of the year friends, family and neighbours spent more time around the pool and barbecue than caring for the children. Kathy returns a couple of hours after dropping Charlie off to find her little girl has vanished and her nightmare begins.

With no obvious evidence the police will have their work cut out for them if they are to uncover the truth and find Charlie, Once the police start digging into alibi’s and suspects pasts it becomes obvious that there are a lot of secrets that will upset and confuse the case.

I enjoyed this novel and didn’t try to be too critical of some of the more far fetched stories as it made an entertaining read. Before I had even finished this one I was already adding a few more books by Wendy Dranfield to me to read list.

I would like to thank both Net galley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

A little girl goes missing at a birthday party and there are no clues as to where or why.....she just vanished....

Oh boy, this book had a lot of potential but there were so many twists thrown in here that it took away from the actual plot. I found it hard to believe that less than 24 hrs of their daughter missing that they still went to work, church, grocery shopping, etc. At one point I read yet another twist and said out loud "for Pete's sake that is ridiculous!" I finished the book only to find out what happened to Charlie but honestly the book wasn't about her but more about the secrets of others and there were SO MANY SECRETS...it was just too much.

Book will be released in January

Thank you NetGalley for an early copy of The Birthday Party.

I enjoyed this book for the most part- even ended up finishing it in the middle of the night. There were a couple of oddities though. The story centers on Kathy, who drops her 5 year old off at a birthday party, only to find out that she disappeared at some point during the event. The rest of the book centers on the search for the child while also uncovering secrets in Kathy’s family.

Let’s start with the secrets- there were some revelations made throughout the book that the characters knew but the reader didn’t. I found this rather odd and felt like the author should’ve provided me more background info from the beginning. There were a couple things I guessed but also a couple that there is no way I could’ve guessed because I just wasn’t given enough info.

That being said, I did enjoy the story itself as well as the primary characters. Even though some things ended up fitting together just a little too neatly, I liked the dynamic between the characters and I was satisfied with how it all worked out (for the most part, as there are some very sad parts).

Overall, I enjoyed the book and I thought there were some clever twists but did think the writing style was a little odd, with info being unnecessarily withheld. I’d give it 3.5 stars overall. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first Wendy Dranfield and I was very excited to get it as she's known for writing very good thrillers.

I am a bit torn about this one, though. It is full of twists and turns, packed with them if you like, but some of them seemed a bit too far fetched, honestly.

Nonetheless it's a catching read, extremely suspenseful and emotional, but also heartbreaking and sad.

I will definiely have a look at other books by this author.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with an ALC in exchange for an honest review.

Solid 4 🌟
I liked the story, was a bit heartbreaking, but the story was done well. It was interesting enough I read it in a day, stayed up way too late to finish it. Some of the storyline was a a little far-reaching and unbelievable, but it is fiction. Some people may not like how the twists and turns wrap things up and I could see some of it coming, but all-in-all, it made for a good book.
I still prefer her Detective Madison Harper series better, but this was a good read. Good enough I'd still read whatever Ms Dranfield puts out.
This is my own opinion and will be cross-posted.

Beautiful little Charlotte Hamilton "Charlie" is 5-years old. She is very excited to go to her twin cousins birthday party. The party is circus themed with balloons, a bounce house, swimming, face painting, and ponies. Charlie can't wait to ride a real horse. She can barely contain her elation as she dresses in her little red cowgirl dress complete with pigtails, boots and a cowboy hat. Her mom Kathy takes her to the party, and leaves only after she is certain Charlie is well cared for at the celebration by relatives. Kathy has arranged for Charlie's babysitter Meghan to pick her up after the event is over. Kathy has an appointment she needs to attend and trusts Meghan to bring Charlie home.

Several hours later, Kathy arrives home to discover Meghan and Charlie are not there. Meghan is not answering her cell phone. The relatives tell Kathy that Charlie left the party several hours ago. Kathy is frantic and calls the police. They send out Detective Chase Cooper. Chase and Kathy knew each other years ago as teenagers, so Chase immediately begins to investigate why Meghan and Charlie are missing.

This is a gripping emotional audio. I rated it 4.5 stars. Except for a couple of tiny holes in the story, it was almost perfect. I was so taken by this novel that I listened to it straight through. It felt so real that I could see the entire story in my head. I added Wendy Dranfield to my favorite author list! " The Birthday Party" will be published January 7, 2022.

This book is a mess.
The emotional responses and grieving process of Charlotte's family is inauthentic. Particularly for her mother, the grief, emotional struggle and powerlessness isn't there. The family just goes about their lives as though nothing has happened with a few brief glimpses of sadness breaking through the veneer.

Additionally, the plot twists are nonsense and OTT tripe just for the sake of having an unpredictable twist. That really infuriates me in books! Twists are great, but make them make sense or just leave them out.

Overall, sorry to say, I hated the writing style, the characters and the plot. Wendy Dranfield is clearly not a writer for me. This book has some fantastic reviews, so judge for yourself. But I will never pick up another book by her.

Ok, This was a mystery and if I could put all the characters on a board of possibly suspects it would BLOW YOUR MIND! I was shocked. The ending was unexpected, at least for me and it got really crazy near the end.
The author did a great job leading me along with metaphorical bread crumbs. I felt for the victims and there were a lot of them in the story. And I’m going to second guess my reasons for therapy from now on. This was well done and I found it really entertaining. I recommend this novel if you love a good mystery.
I chose to listen to this book on audio and the narrator Sarah Borges was good.

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY will tug on almost every emotion as the twists turn and twist again. Wendy Dranfield will keep you invested in the story by showing you just enough to believe you have it figured out and then revealing another detail that will open up another possibility.
Charlie was excited about her cousins' birthday party, and she couldn't wait to attend it. Both her parents had to work, so they left her with her aunt and uncle. There were lots of people they knew at the party, so they thought nothing could go wrong.
Later that evening, her parents discover that Charlie is missing, but her disappearance is only one in a line of mysteries that don't stop unfolding until the final pages.
I enjoyed the story. Once I read the first couple of chapters, it was almost impossible for me to put the book down.
I was given a copy of the book by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own.
I recommend the book for mature readers, as some sensitive subjects are discussed in the story.

Every book I have read by this author has been extremely good. Will this be another 5 star story?

When someone you love disappears, it’s always a tragedy, but when it’s a child, it’s even a bigger one. I really could not imagine how I would feel if it should have happened to me.

The baddies feel so great about themselves, because of what they can do, but they should rather see themselves as big, fat cowards for taking on victims that are younger or smaller than they are.

I had not pictured this person as being the bad one. I had another name in my head. Was I disappointed once again for not picking up on the clues? No, not at all. I did not see this coming and that’s the way I love it. It means the author has the ability to fool me and to keep me guessing until the end.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to protect the family’s name and/or fortune, but there are limits that should be respected too. That’s where it often goes wrong, very wrong…

A great story that I enjoyed very, very much. 5 stars

Thank you, Wendy Dranfield and Bookouture

Kathy grew up in a wealthy and privileged but controlling family. When she falls for a boy from the wrong side of the tracks she tries to hide their relationship and is devastated when it falls apart.

Decades later, when Kathy's daughter goes missing, hidden cracks in the prestigious Hamilton family facade rise to the surface, as nothing is quite as it seems.

Gripping and compelling read. My first by this author but I look forward to reading more.

I loved this book by a new-to-me-author, Wendy Dranfield. It is the story of a missing child, and a family with lots and lots of secrets that are gradually revealed throughout the book. I was gripped right from the start and it didn't let go! It's one of those 'just one more chapter' books that you end up listening to way past bedtime and I went through every emotion imaginable whilst listening, I certainly didn't work out 'whodunnit' so that came as a real shock.

The narration by Sarah Borges was great and added to my enjoyment.

I've now bought Ms Dranfield's Madison Harper series.

This was entertaining enough. Enjoyable. However, a lot of it was unbelievable. Farfetched. There was a lot to keep track of but it was fairly well organized. A pretty good read all in all.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Birthday Party' by Wendy Dranfield.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Wendy Dranfield, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 7th January 2022.

This is the third book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'Cry For Help' which is the second book in the 'Detective Madison Harper' series and 'Little Girl Taken' which is the third book in the 'Detective Madison Harper' series and which I would highly recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Gone Girl and Teresa Driscol. ' I am a huge fan of Lisa and 'Gone Girl' so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a fan of Wendy Dranfield and if this is half as good as 'Cry For Help' and 'Little Girl Taken' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of 66 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Vermont, USA 🇺🇸.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Kathy Hamilton and Detective Chase Cooper. The benefits of third person perspective are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out on anything.

'The Birthday Party' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Wendy discusses/includes a abuse and assault. I wasn't sure whether to include a trigger warning as I don't want to give too much away but I think it's important to state that some triggers include a child so felt it important to include.

Wow!!!! Just flipping wow!!!! What an absolutely epic page turner!!! Well done Wendy you done it again!! Absolutely smashed it!!!!!!! YOU HAVE JUST HIT NOT ONLY MY TOP 3 PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER BUT MY TOP 5 AUTHOR LIST!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVED!!! JUST OMG READ THIS NOW!!!

This books is very well written with vivid descriptions creating the perfect atmosphere for the storyline. The book cover and synopsis works perfectly with the book plot and I am most definitely looking forward to reading not only the next book in the 'Detective Madison Harper' series but also the next heart racing page turner!!

An addictive, nail biting, page turning, heart racing and compelling storyline which had many layers of mysteries and crimes for the reader to be kept guessing throughout. This book just kept on giving and giving and giving and OMG the bombshells just kept on coming!!! Filled with twists, turns, shocks, tragedy and red herrings throughout I had no idea who did what until the end. This is an achievement in itself as it is definitely getting harder to surprise me with the amount of crime novels I've read. The plot was unique and realistic. It started straight in the action and kept you going on a roller-coaster ride of suspension throughout. I was almost in tears when I read certain things, absolutely heartbreaking and certain people got what they deserved in my eyes whilst others deserved so much more. I am so glad that another certain character got their comeuppance too, although I would have liked to see many tortured!!! It is so hard to say how glad I am and how gutted I was about certain events without giving anything away to future readers but I'm sure once people have read it they will know exactly what I mean. Each chapter just left me wanting more and more and I CANNOT remember when I was soooo addicted to a book. I was absolutely hooked. Seriously, don't start this if you have plans as I can guarantee you won't be making them!! Well done Wendy you did absolutely amazing and everything was tied up perfectly. Although certain aspects at the end were absolutely heartbreaking and devastating other endings were just as they should have been.

Before you start this make sure you clear your schedule because once you pick it up you are not going to want to put it down!!!!

I absolutely loved meeting certain characters which definitely included Charlie, Kathy and Chase!! I loved the fact that the main leads were a strong female with alot of background and yet having gone through so much and still going through so much and a very sweet, gorgeous detective whose story broke my heart! I also enjoyed Megan's character and my heart really did go out to her 😔 really liked Chase's character and how he still held a torch for Kathy and I hope he gets everything he deserves. I absolutely despised a certain character who was just complete and utter scum, evil, filth, I could go on and on, I cannot STAND them and don't understand how someone could be sooo despicable. I really can't say anything more as I don't want to give anything away but please when you read this get back to me as I need to rant to someone who knows how I feel. If you don't raad this then seriously your losing out!! I enjoyed that Wendy gave just the right amount of background information on the characters to let us know about them for it to be a standalone. I have never read any of her standalone books and as I've only read the ones in a series I was a bit wary but OMG as I hear many people say 'the girl did gooooooodddd'!!! I'd also like to thank Wendy for bringing certain topics to light, they must have been hard to write about and you've done an amazing job of portraying certain 'things', sorry I can't go into details, again not wanting to spoil it, but I'm sure this will help many people who are struggling so thank you.

Absolutely fantastic Wendy. My heart is still pounding and this story will stay with me for a long, long time.

Congratulations Wendy on yet another success and for absolutely blowing my mind time and time again!!! An absolutely addictive page turner that I would LOVE to see turned into the world's best psychological movie!!!

Overall a pulse racing, engrossing, addictive page turning psychological thriller thay will keep you on edge and will blow your mind over and over again!!

Genres covered in this novel include Thriller, Crime Fiction, Psychological Fiction, Suspense, Psychology Thriller and Mystery amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans Melissa Leigh,Lisa Jewell, 'Gone Girl', Teresa Driscoll Angela Marsons, C. L Taylor, Carol Wyer and anyone looking for a great read.

391 pages.

This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon or free on kindle unlimited which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

My Review:
Wow, wow, wow!!!!! I am totally speechless and shocked to the core. I don’t even know where to start with this one. So this book is a stand alone and this author is new to me. This author has written other books but those are part of a series. I have not read them yet but after reading this book you better believe I will start on them very soon. What made this book so great were all the shocking and explosive secrets that were exposed throughout the book. I was like wow is this author really going to go there. I was on the edge of my seat as each chapter passed. I could not put this book down for the life of me. I had to finish it no exceptions. I could not eat or sleep until I found out what happened. This book could really be made into a movie. It definitely had all the check marks for a great psychological thriller. I know I would pay lots of money to see it. This book was my first by this author but it definitely will not be my last. She really hit this one out of the ball park and I look forward to reading her next book.

Lastly, the characters, plot, and the ending of this book made this an easy and fast read. I would definitely recommend this book and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This book is a must read. The twists and turns never stop. The most horrifying situation for any parents to be in. Some characters are fantastic - Kathy, Chase, Charlie are some. Others not so much. This Author has become a favourite. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.

Wow, what a fast paced page turner this is.
Kathy drops five year old Charlie at her in laws for a birthday party. That is the last time she sees her.
Why didn't Megan the babysitter pick her up as arranged?
As the hours pass with no news Detective Chase Cooper is on the case.
There were so many twists, some shockers, others I had already guessed.
The author certainly had me on the edge of my seat. So well written and believable.
The family dynamics were interesting especially between Mitch and Scott.
I hated Kathy's mother Connie with a passion, so controlling.
Loved the ending.
Highly recommend this nail biting read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC in return for an honest review.

If you enjoy crime thrillers, this is one of the best,
With a child's disappearance triggering family unrest.
A story filled with secrets, family drama and history
As the police endeavour to uncover this mystery.

The Hamilton's are all about keeping up their appearances
Maintaining status whenever they've the chance
But they're a dysfunctional family, with secrets by the score,
Although young Charlie is a child most adore.

A birthday party for her nephews is where the drama starts
Kathy drops off Charlie to join in, then quickly departs.
Returning home much later, the family are shocked to discover,
Charlie has disappeared and they start suspecting each other.

What an enthralling page turner this story turned out to be
One filled with angst, turmoil and mystery.
It is only as secrets and lies are uncovered
That there's a chance for the truth to be discovered.

A great read that kept me on the edge of my seat
By an author whose style is impossible to beat
I thoroughly enjoyed this riveting read
And highly suggest it is something that you also need!

For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
I throughly enjoyed perusing it and this is my honest review.

An addictive page-turner about a mother dropping her daughter off at a birthday party, only for her to never be seen again. When Kathy realizes that her daughter, Charlie, is missing, she’s shocked. She believed she left Charlie in good hands at her nephews’ birthday party, but nobody seems to remember anything amiss. So where could Charlie have gone? Or who could have taken her? Kathy tries to get ahold of the babysitter, but to no avail. Her husband said he was working all afternoon, but then why does she notice him in a completely different outfit than he left the house wearing? Something isn’t right here and soon everyone’s secrets will be revealed during the search for Charlie…

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book! It is easily one of my favorites this year. Twists and turns galore with connections to the past that you don’t see coming. Wendy Dranfield did an outstanding job of keeping more surprises coming until the very end!

I am so glad that I started 2022 with this book - absolutely marvelous!

Kathy Hamilton doesn’t realize that it would be last time she would see Charlotte waving at her and going to attend a birthday party. Charlotte has been looking forward to this party for weeks together, there’s going to be a pony, a clown and lot of other attractions.
By the time the family realizes that Charlotte has disappeared a lot starts to happen – and no one seems to be telling the truth about their whereabouts when Charlotte went missing.
Every character in this book had secrets and when they started unraveling the story moves in a much faster pace – this was a roller coaster ride kind of a book. Every chapter was breath taking.

This is my fourth book by Wendy Dranfield and I'm so glad I picked it up. Fast-paced, where nothing is like it seems, I really enjoyed the way it all came together at the end. Although I feel I need to take a break from stories involving missing children, I still found The Birthday Party completely riveting and absorbing. Very highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
