This is a gorgeous quick to read graphic novel, and one that will leave you scratching your head.
One quick tip (not really a spoiler): if you enjoyed the "For All Mankind" TV series, you'll absolutely love this!
The art is very direct, minimalistic and "straight-to-the-point" but masterfully drawn in black and white.
The narrative about the soviet first crewed Moon mission is very intriguing, fast paced and well plotted.
About three quarters into the story you'll have a major plot twist and then other elements are added to the story, that throw it a bit off balance... Anyway, it's an epic "outer" adventure that many space and SF fans will certainly love.

Kosmos aurait clairement pu faire parti de mon top 10 des BD de l’année pour sa grande qualité. Graphiquement magnifique, avec son dessin noir et blanc épuré et vertigineux qui offre une intensité rare au silence, c’est aussi une BD aux narrations très réussies. L’histoire uchronique est très accrocheuse et l’aspect documentaire/vidéo complotiste est extrêmement bien mené. Une sacré réussite!

Moi et les uchronies, c’est une histoire d’amour ! J’adore découvrir ce qui aurait pu être, comment les choses auraient pu se passer autrement et on peut faire confiance aux écrivains en tous genres pour nous concocter des récits étonnants. Avec cet album, ce qui frappe d’emblée, c’est son graphisme épuré, au fort contraste noir et blanc et ses grandes vignettes. La couverture est d’ailleurs très représentative de l’économie des traits : c’est très efficace et l’atmosphère de vide de l’espace est ainsi très bien rendue. Mais l’histoire est tout aussi réussie ! Après la séquence d’arrivée sur la Lune du module américain, où j’ai retenu mon souffle comme si tout cela se déroulait en direct sous mes yeux, on s’aperçoit, en même temps qu’Armstrong, qu’il y a quelque chose d’inattendu et c’est à partir de là, qu’on va découvrir ce qui s’est passé. A travers des interviews de personnalités américaines et russes impliquées dans les programmes spatiaux des deux pays, on apprend certaines choses et on se retrouve aussi à bord du Soyouz 5, à suivre la mission des cosmonautes. Présenté comme un documentaire, cela interpelle aussi les lecteurs sur la perception qu’on peut avoir des faits historiques, se mélangeant allègrement avec la manipulation, la création de fake news ou la dissimulation d’évènements, sans pour autant virer au complotisme (mais forcément, on y pense quand on voit toutes ces tendances actuelles qui fleurissent partout). Un album que j’ai vraiment beaucoup apprécié, même si j’ai été un peu frustrée par sa rapidité de lecture !

Co mi się podobało? Grafika! Ale pięknie wyglądają te białe kontury na tle głębokiej czerni kosmosu. Świetnie się patrzy na ten komiks, nawet jeśli tematyka nie do końca moja. Fabuła to trochę bajdurzenie na granicy teorii spiskowej. Niby taka konwencja, ale dla mnie to jest jednak zawsze pożywka dla tych, którzy łakną tanich sensacji. W gadkach o tym, że Rosjanie uprzedzili Amerykanów w podboju kosmosu, jest może ziarnko prawdy, ale skoro nie ma dowodów to zabawy w szukanie tropów wydają się pożywką dla wszystkich tych, którzy żyją z dezinformacji. Fejkowe i nieudokumentowane historie są zmorą naszych czasów, dlatego jestem uprzedzony.

Na początku nie do końca przekonywały mnie te partie komiksu, gdzie w kilku i kilkunastostronicowych sekwencjach obserwujemy odpalanie kolejnych mechanizmów, maszyn itd. Można było zminimalizować kadry, machnąć takie rzeczy na mniejszej przestrzeni i nie byłoby wrażenia sztucznego nabijania liczby stron. Jednak z czasem fabuła się zagęszcza, a pod koniec jest już naprawdę emocjonująco, więc rozegrano to sprytnie.

Quite wonderful, atmospheric black and white artwork, with great detail of the rockets, Cosmonauts, moon craters, really makes this book. The story too is 'true', being a dramatisation based on 5 serious books (listed at the end). The general premise is that a few days before Apollo 11 landed on the moon in 1969, the Russians made a last-ditch attempt using a Soyuz 4 and Soyuz 5 in a combination, with a lightweight, one-way-only lightweight lander module, to put a female Cosmonaut on the moon just 72hrs before the Americans. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't, maybe it's all fiction, but it reads like it could've happened and leaves the reader wondering. I was quite captivated all the way though, even though so many 'silent' panels whilst conveying the loneliness of space travel, perhaps make this story feel a little longer-winded than need be. An unusual comic book, but an intelligent, worthwhile read. 4.5/5

Magnifique BD qui fait forcément réfléchir. Vrai/faux documentaire certes. Mais attention, car tout cela pourrait aussi être pris au sérieux et alimenter inutilement les débats. Je ne serai pas surpris qu'on entende dire qu'une femme est la première à avoir posé les pieds sur cette lune. Car ce n'est pas vrai hein ? Justement … la vérité est tellement compliquée à connaître au vu des enjeux colossaux.

Je n'étais pas spécialement attiré par cette BD à sa sortie, mais il y a eu de bons retours et ma curiosité a fait le dernier pas. Et cette lecture a été très prenante, très agréable. J'ai beaucoup aimé cette aventure, cette histoire, cette approche.

Amazing illustrations. Not a fan of the storytelling.

We're told more often than shown what happens in the story with the help of some extremely stoic panels and an overwhelming amount of speech bubbles. Maybe if the novel was longer, we could've been shown a more dynamic version of the story, letting the actions unravel in a more fluid and enticing way. Without turning into an action-driven graphic novel, it could have brought much more drama and depth to the story. Instead, it felt passive and distant, which is probably the desired effect, but to me, it felt poorly executed.

Joli noir et blanc, mais je reste sur ma faim sur le scénario. On nous propose une uchronie, mais au final c'est juste le voyage d'astronautes russes vers la lune. C'est intéressant et bien fait, il y a un petit twist final et tout, mais ça reste léger niveau contenu à mon goût.

The artwork goes very well with the whole vibe of the story, with only some lines and darker shades you get that claustrophobic feeling of being in space.

This it`s an alternate history, and it has it`s moments of well thought scenes.

Good effort by the writer and illustrator!
