Percival’s journey is one wrought with emotion when, after his mother dies unexpectedly, he finds his sheltered upbringing has left him lacking survival skills.
Lucky for Percival, there are plenty of people to help educate him about the ways of the world. After Percival is sent to Detroit via the orphan train, he is taken in by Louis Gianetti – a kindly Italian restaurant owner who wishes only to make his new son proud.
A difficult task when previous mistakes put them both in danger from men who wish to strip them of everything they have.
Loyal will reunite the reader with past favorites such as Paddy, Mouse and the gang, and new characters, such as Big Joe, the boxer who helps teach Percival AKA Slim to use his legs to his advantage, and Mr. Thornton, who encourages him to use his brain to fight his battles.
Will Percival be able to use his education to see his mother’s dream fulfilled, or will he succumb to the dark lifestyle that surrounds him?

I received an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. “Loyal” the title says it all. I absolutely LOVED this book and Percival's (AKA Slim) story. It will grab you right away and take you on an adventure through the cautious and curious mind of a child growing up through hard times. I love when I’m reading a book and it come alive in your mind. That’s what “Loyal” did for me. Percival’s love, toughness and perseverance will pull at your heart strings and won’t let go. . My personal favorite characters were; Big Joe, Doctor Todd, Thornton, Gianetti “Pop’s”, Chalkie hahahaha (you’ll have to see for yourself as to why he was so memorable). Then there is the story within the story. The banter between Cindy and her mother as they are reading the journals. They crack me up with the crazy things they say and do. I find myself laughing out loud many times as I read about them. The adventure at the cemetery will leave you intrigued and curious for more. It will be interesting to see where that story leads when the adventure continues in the next book. Mrs. Burton as in her previous books leaves you wanting more and on the edge of your seat for the next story in the Orphan Train Saga....
Skin's story is one of my favorite the Orphan Train sagas.
Slim is Percivil 's street name. He was on the streets of New York for awhile after his mother was hit by a truck and died. He learns to fight when a professional boxer review him from some bullies. In his gang of street kids ,his role is to teach the kids to protect themselves because he is not a good pick pocket due to a head injury that left whilst movements he can' control. He is sent to the orphanage and finally on the Orphan Train to Detroit. He is helped by many people and helps many others in return. He lives history - Prohibition, the Great Depession and World War II.
The Orphan Train series is a must read!! I couldn't stop reading after the first book and just finished the 5th. You will smile and cry while reading these books. As Sherry Burton says this happened many many years ago. You can't do anything for the children in the books but you can help today's children. Thank you Sherry for giving me the idea of researching this subject further. Looking forward to more.
Percival’s story tied up some of the loose ends of some story lines. He is very different from many of the others that rode the trains and had a different caliber of adult who stepped up to help him. His story is heartwarming and heartbreaking but much more hopeful.
This book was great. Percival aka Slim was raised By his single mother, after his father died. He’s mother was raising him to be and educated well behaved young boy. But she died in an accident. He met some interesting people when he was out on the streets alone that shaped his life. Great read!!&
I bought this book from the author’s website. This is the Fifth book in her series, The Orphan Train Saga. These stories just get better with each book. This was Percival’s (Slim) story and what a life he lived! I enjoyed this book so much.
Can they get better as they go? Each one has some part that pulls you in a doesn't let go! I loved that Slim did become a lawyer and got to find a wife and raise a family! His mothers house too!
I like how these stories have connected each child story in their words and from their view. I appreciate the honest version of these stories. I would recommend to anyone who might show an interest and look forward to the next one.
What a wonderful and beautiful story. Nice and long too. It encompassed much of what I had already read however from Slim's point of view. Many questions have been answered and other questions popped up, but over all a great book. Can't wait for the next one.
If you get a chance, you need to read this series of books! They are wonderful! Personally this is the type of interesting books that pull you right in and you can’t wait to read the next one!
This is the last book in the series, I would read them in order. The books are well written and I feel the author had researched the time period well in order to write the series.
I have absolutely loved all the books of this series so far! I will be impatiently awaiting book 6 due out in December. I can’t wait! I highly recommend all of Sherry’s books that I’ve read so far.
I have read every book in the correct order. I am so involved in each book. I love to seek each book’s adventures. It is hard for me to stop reading and go to bed.
