Life Against Death: Srebrenica

Kadir Habibović's autobiographical story "Life Against Death - Srebrenica" is about his run in with death during Srebrenica Genocide in 1995. He was gravely injured, carried to an execution shooting, but his wish for life and freedom was much greater. He was one of the few who managed to survive.

In this book, the author searches for the justice and poses obvious questions regarding who is guilty for murdering thousands of innocent people, and why they did not have the right to live.

I have a student who is a Bosnian immigrant to the United States and is the nephew of a man who was murdered in the Bosnian genocide. This student recommended this book to me. This is a powerful narrative about one man's escape to freedom from imprisonment and torture during the Balkan war. There are a few structural issues with the book the reader should be aware of. There are no chapter breaks. It is written as one long stream of consciousness until you get to the epilogue. Page 176 at the end is printed twice so you will want to skip it when you are reading.
