Eliza Campbell dreams of becoming a lady, but being the daughter of a Jamaican plantation worker and an English earl will only complicate things. Her arrival to London after her seventeenth birthday is the chance to finally earn her father's approval. Therefore, she immediately sets her mind to it by focusing on romance as her only potential entrance to nobility. Despite her best efforts though, the high society she tries to enter proves to be impenetrable. Luckily for her, a handsome, if not eccentric, young man crosses her path and offers to help her prepare for her debut. Surprising even herself, her indubitable connection to him won’t allow her to deny the proposal.
Will this be her ticket to succeeding or will this intriguing connection distract her from her goal?
Matteo Laurentiis has been hiding in an English garret, while he is trying to forget the grief and pain from his parents’ loss. As heartbreaking as it was, leaving his inheritance in ruins was the only choice he was left with, in order to ensure no one would discover he is an Italian Conte. Deliberately lost and alone, he never expected anyone to change him, and especially not a young girl who aspires to be everything he rejected. Much to his surprise, her willingness to climb up the ruling classes matches his desire to dupe them. Little did he know that he would be rewarded with so much more along the way...
Will this growing bond between two strangers survive the threatening secrets?
As Eliza and Matteo continue to work together, they cannot defy their ever-growing need to see each other again and again. Yet, Eliza has purposed to marry well, and Matteo is a seemingly lowly tutor who struggles to make ends meet. How could this romance ever be without ruining both of their lives’ ambitions? Will their love be sacrificed for the sake of the nobility’s acceptance, or will they follow their hearts and be rewarded with more than mere affection?
Aria Norton grew up in Sussex, England. She left abroad for studies but returned after she got married to her husband, and they currently live with their two wonderful children.
She has worked as a History teacher for years, but she always wrote stories whenever she got the chance. Putting her knowledge of history to a creative use was a dream of hers ever since she was a college student. She finally found a way around that plan, when her best friend suggested that she attends a creative writing class, which changed her life forever!
When she’s not teaching and writing, Aria loves watching true crime documentaries with her husband, drinking fine wine with her friends, and reading romance novels!
Eliza is truly better off without her relations. It’s amazing that Matteo also had come out of his shell and for the two of them to find love with each other. While I do agree that animosity is usually the reaction any cheated upon spouse will have upon learning of the affair and the product of that affair, I think it was rather sad that Eliza’s father actually decided to take her with him instead of letting her stay in Jamaica instead. It wouldn’t have been different since she would have been subjected to the same labor. But then again, I’m also glad things turned out that way because she found Matteo and genuine people she could call friends.
A story about Eliza, an illegitimate daughter of an English plantation owner and one of his Jamaican slaves. Upon the mother’s death he fulfills his promise to her dying mother to take care of her. The manner in which he fulfills his promise and how it all plays out for Eliza in the end is slowly unraveled up to her hea Was not a fan of Eliza personally but that’s just my opinion. Also would have liked to see more consequences paid out to her father’s family also.
Matteo is a Comte. His parents died three years prior. So he stayed in England, afraid to go home. One day he saw a woman in the park, crying. He stopped and offered to help. She told him her whole story about being from Jamaica, and her Mom and her being a slave. Her father is an Englishman. He was ashamed of her and her life was sad. She was eight when she came to England. Now he wanted her married off. Things got very interesting. Please read.
