Pirates of Wefrivain #2

Shores Beyond the World

Rate this book
They did a terrible thing. They've returned to make it right. The price will be high.

Gerard and Silveo have made peace with their pasts...or so they think. They've joined the pirates they once hunted and are prepared to leave Wefrivain in quest for a new life. However, an unexpected cry for help brings them unwillingly back into home waters.

The fauns of Maijha Minor are in trouble, and helping them seems like the right thing to do. To succeed, they must circulate Gwain's forbidden book, which tells the truth about the wyvern gods. Gwain himself has already given up the task as hopeless, but Silveo has other ideas. Together, they will get into more trouble than anyone thought possible.

Pirates of Wefrivain is an epic fantasy saga that includes LGBT+ themes, polyamory, dragons, sassy anti-heroes, characters overcoming a history of abuse, true love, talking cats, and outrageous clothing. Mature audiences only.

NOTE: This book was originally published as Books 4-5 of the Cowry Catchers series. This new edition includes bonus stories that were originally sold separately.

Per Ms. Abigail Hilton:

Fantastic! Magic, Mystery & Might!

The multitude of emotions invoked throughout The Guild of the Cowry Catchers was amplified throughout Shores Beyond the World! I love the character developments!
Many connections were created and/or strengthened while others corroded and severed. Some links thought lost were renewed. There are many surprises for both better and worse!
It's almost impossible to discuss the story without spoilers.

And then there were the bonus stories:

Sky Dance - Thessalyn; the early years. We learn that her maiden name was Clamcove (although the audio says Clambottom - UGH).
This story gives us a better understanding of Thessalyn as a person. It shows her stubborn determination, intellect, and beautiful heart, as well as the giftedness of her talents. Sky Dance is a bitter-sweet tale, especially after reading the last chapter of Shores Beyond the World. I am left wondering, now knowing the possibilities, if she opted to go.
I have decided that if I adopt another cat, she will be named Thessalyn.

Harbor Wave - Gerard; the early years. He has always been brave, kind, and naive.
In this story, Gerard seems better able to overcome embarrassment as a teen than he does as an adult. We see an early example of the lengths to which Gerard will go when he is determined to get things done.
It is made clear that Alsair has constantly been exasperated by the very traits that make Gerard who he is.
*Side note: The narration was done by someone else. I did not enjoy it. The voice used for Alsair, especially, was completely wrong, to the point of discomfort. I much prefer when Abigail narrates.

Quarantine - How Basil and Silveo meet (?). I'm trying to remember if any of this was mentioned previously.

Chemistry - Silveo & Lu; the Malpin/Assassin years & Lu meets Basil. This has been my favorite of the short stories so far. While the story is centered around Lu, we learn more about Silveo and Basil. Oh, and we see how Lu gets her shop.

Taking Tricks - Percy & Silas. Who, you ask? I had the same question. I enjoyed this story but was confused about why I didn't recognize any of the characters. The answer is simple - Abigail Hilton mentions at the end that we will meet them in book#3 - The Scarlet Albatross.

Thrilling plot and lovely characters

I fell in love with this world and its characters. I was a little afraid to start on the next installment for fear it too will keep me awake until early morning. Extremely addicting!

12/2022 addendum: this version now comes with a couple of Hilton's excellent short stories. While I love the main novels, the short stories is where Hilton truly shines as an author, in my opinion. It's a pity they were overlooked for so long due to being published separately before.

Don't skip them; they're both plot relevant and delightful reads.

Middle books are always full of the dark times for our heroes, and this is a great example of this. The cast of characters expands, bringing in new world building also. And we get into the primary m/m relationship. Wonderful series, highly recommend!
