She's come to build a future. He's running from his past. Patrick O’Connor has seen far too much of the cruel and unforgiving world. Life has beaten him down relentlessly. Out of hope and out of options, he makes the terrifying and desperate decision to return home to the family he has lied to for years, the family he knows will never forgive him.Widowed and nearly unable to care for her tiny daughter under the weight of extreme poverty, Eliza Porter jumps at the opportunity to leave behind the slums of New York City for the promise of a new life and a new beginning in the frontier town of Hope Springs.Fate tosses the two of them together more and more often, while the burden of his tightly-held secrets and the ache of her abandoned dreams pull them further and further apart. Clinging to the whispered possibility of something more than the pain life has offered them thus far will require every bit of hope they can find in this peaceful but precarious valley of dreams. From the USA Today Bestselling author of the Longing for Home series, VALLEY OF DREAMS is a romance novel set in the beloved world of Hope Springs. Oh how I love Hope Springs! If you are a reader who enjoys reading stories with multiple books about families with struggles, and hopes and heartaches and joys and love...this is one that I can't recommend enough. I have loved every book I've read in this series. The O'Connor clan are one of my favorite literary families. No struggle or heartache is too big for the love that they have for each other and they support that they offer.

If you haven't read the series I'm going to be vague enough in my review to not give away any spoilers. Except for the mention of Patrick having his own story now. Sorry, it couldn't be helped considering I'm writing a review about this book, about Patrick. If it doesn't make sense why I make that disclaimer then once you start reading the series you'll understand. If you are planning on reading the series and don't like spoilers, all I can say is don't read the reviews of any of the books until you have read the books. Just a friendly warning there.

If I had to choose a favorite family member and their story from this family, I don't know if I could do it. I thought that maybe it would be previous books, but as I read this book and had scenes with the different family members in them, I would remember how much I loved their story and just can't pick a favorite. But I will say that after reading this book, I really wanted to go back and read the first book. The Archers have several scenes in this and it made me think back to how much I remember first experiencing Hope Springs and all the characters, and how much I loved them.

Patrick has several struggles and sorrows that he's kept close to his heart. Returning to Hope Springs is his last hope, and yet he doesn't feel like he deserves any of the hope. Eliza is traveling to Hope Springs with hope for her and her daughter's future as well. I loved every moment of Patrick and Eliza's interactions. Especially on the stage coach and any reference afterwards. Oh heavens! I giggled and cried and ached with these characters while reading.

I can't wait to see if the character I have been hoping to get their story soon will be the next book. I'm hoping so. The author seemed to be setting that up in this book. Yay!!!!! From the first book, I've been waiting as have many others I'm sure. That's vague...sorry, not sorry!

Content: This book is a clean read but deals with some more emotional topics as well as alcoholism. But it was addressed and very well written. I highly recommend reading it!

I received a copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Though he's been thought dead for the past decade, son and brother Patrick O'Connor isn't dead and we finally get to hear his story. It's a story of trying to keep a deceased loved one's memory untarnished, learning to let go of burdens that have been carried around for far too long, and learning that you deserve to be loved.

Patrick O'Connor has kept himself away from his family for over a decade. One night in Winnipeg, Canada after selling his beloved fiddle to buy whiskey and receiving an unexpected letter from his mother, telling him they've just found out he's alive and asking him to come home to Hope Springs, Patrick does just that. It's on the journey to Hope Springs that he meets Eliza Porter, and her young daughter Lydia. Eliza's talkative and optimistic--the opposite of Patrick. Ever the gentleman, Patrick carries Eliza's trunk to the home where the friend who invited her to Hope Springs lives. Imagine his shock and surprise when Maura O'Connor opens the door and almost the entire O'Connor clan is gathered inside.

Patrick's story was sometimes heartbreaking. He was torn between wanting to preserve his family's memories of Grady and letting them know the truth which would relieve the load he'd been carrying for so long. I love how Eliza helps him see that he needs to tell his family the truth, although he doesn't have to tell it all at once and he doesn't have to tell them all at the same time. I hurt so much for Patrick when he and Ian were struggling with their relationship. I understood why the family members were upset, but Patrick had been without family for so long and had been so lonely it broke my heart. So when Eliza found out about his drinking and distanced herself from him I thought I'd surely cry. I was so upset with her.

As always, Sarah M. Eden weaves a story of family, love, struggles, and forgiveness with characters so rich we feel we know them. I loved how even though a lot of the family weren't exactly friendly to Patrick he still helped whenever, wherever and however he could. His relationship with Finbarr was very touching. I loved how Eliza had bigger dreams than staying a housekeeper for the Archer family and she was able to realize that dream with everyone's help. She and Patrick both learned that Hope Springs was a place of healing.

I normally love Eden's books. I love the deep feeling and yes sadness of her books. You never want to read an Eden book while depressed, at least I don't. Well I shouldn't have read this one right now. I should have waited till I was mentaly in a better place. The book was beautiful. She writes well. Her charcters are often weighed down by life and normally hard things happen. I appreciate how real she keeps it but you know things are going to look up eventually. This book was just harder for me to read then her others.
This book deals with alcoholism. It is very chaste and has no religion.

I fall more in love with this family with each book! I'm so happy that Patrick turned up alive, especially since we got to know him before the war in My Dearest Love. It's heartbreaking to see what he's gone through and how he's changed. I love that even though he struggles with his family, Eliza and her toddler daughter are able to bring the lighter side of him to the surface with their friendliness and acceptance. The O'Connor and Archer family members from the previous books don't just make an appearance, but their personalities shine through as they interact with Patrick and Eliza. Ian and Patrick especially struggled with their reconciliation, which made it all the sweeter when they finally overcame the hard feelings. There is plenty of teasing banter, especially with Tavish around, and Eliza fits in the family perfectly in that way. She and Patrick share a sense of humor which is a good foundation when their feelings and attraction grows stronger with time. Conflicts and self-doubt make their relationship road a bit bumpy, but it's a wonderful journey of redemption and forgiveness with strong family bonds and sweet romance.

Clearly, if you've read any books in this series, you will see how expertly Sarah Eden understands the Irish culture, language and its people.

Another treasured visit back to Hope Springs, and another wonderful two characters finding peace with each other. This is a series not to be missed by this author. I love the gorgeous cover, and the way the story develops - always giving us a touch of everything we love about the O'Conner family and all their beloved neighbors.

A sweet love story of redemption and forgiveness and second chances at love and happiness. Not just in romantic love but also in love for family and friends. Bonds forged during hardship and sacrifice. Patrick has been away from his family over 10 years after the war has ended. Isolating himself from family and friends. Suffering with a heartache and loss he doesn’t know how to deal with on his own. Eliza has an optimistic and happy disposition despite the hard blows life has sent her. She is just the woman Patrick needs to pull him from self pity and doubt. Finding a way to build love between each other and mending bridges previously burned or thought lost. This story will allow you to laugh while also allowing you to cry and feel the pain that life sometimes has to offer.

description

Through a number of books in this series we have grown closer to the O’Connor family. We feel their joys, and we feel their sorrows. This story will bring you through a journey of emotions. We grieve with them, laugh with them, and we rejoice when they find where they truly belong.

“Life hadn’t been all flowers and sunshine for the O’Connors.”

This family has suffered so much but stay together and support each other. Patrick O’Connor is not like the rest of his family. He feels that they are better off without him, and he let them believe he was dead for years. He used to be outgoing and funny but is now broken down and only wants to be left alone. Patrick is battling with his demons, but he returns to his family so they can fix him. He is gruff but tender, and he is so sweet with Lydia.

“He was a kindhearted soul, and such a thing was something that ought not be hidden.”

Eliza Porter is an extrovert who loves to laugh and is caring and strong. She has dreams that she worries are too big. She has also been going through hard times but wants to stay positive for herself and her daughter Lydia. Eliza sees Patrick as a mystery that she wants to solve.

“Happiness can be found even in the most difficult of situations.”

Finbarr and Emma’s story also continues in this book. I can’t wait for their own book and for more about the beloved O’Connors!

“Hope had brought them to this town. Love had built a life for them here. Beautiful, powerful, miraculous love.”

Patrick is a wonderful character. Well-developed. A big bear of a man, a musician, a builder, a lost soul, a brother, a Civil War veteran, a giving and caring person, a son, a rescuer, and an alcoholic.

He is all of these things, trying to come home after years of isolation.

Everywhere he turns is love if only he can find a way to accept it.

I read this book in 2 or 3 days, but I've put off rating it because I wanted to write a review. But . . . life. Of course now time has passed and the story is less fresh in my mind than I like for when I write about a book, but--as is obvious--what stood out for me in this story is what a special man Patrick is. This was one of those reads that just pulled me along with no need for respite. Enjoy.

I haven't read all of the Longing for Home series, I think I've missed books 3 and 4. Each book can be read independently, but there are obviously events and relationship developments that happened before Valley of Dreams.
This was a poignant story of finding yourself, overcoming adversity, and love. Patrick hasn't been home since the war, and his brother's death. When he hits rock bottom, he drags himself home, hoping that someone will find something of worth in him. He sure can't! He meets Eliza and her little girl on the stagecoach only to realize that they're both settling in Hope Springs.
I liked Patrick and Eliza, and especially little Lydia. There's something about a gruff grumpy man melting for a little girl that just melts my heart.
This series is different from Sarah Eden's other books. It's heart-wrenching and gritty. There's prejudice, mild violence, alcoholism, guilt/blame, and a whole lot of other issues. I prefer her happier Regency novels, but I was still sucked right with the O'Connors trying to make their way as immigrants in the west. There were still light moments of humor, but this family has certainly known the bitter before they could taste the sweet.

Content: clean (a few kisses, mild violence, talk of alcohol addiction)

This is such a classic Sarah Eden romance. It has all the feels and I loved seeing all the characters from previous Hope Springs books. In this one, Patrick O'Connor, who was believed killed in the war, has come home. Maura's friend Eliza has also come to Hope Springs, and Eliza strikes up an unlikely friendship with Patrick. She seems to reach parts of him that even his family can't and a romance starts to blossom---until some of Patrick's secrets come to the surface. It is such a tender romance and Lydia, Eliza's little girl, definitely steals the scenes and everyone's hearts. The only drawback for me was that Patrick's reason for letting his family believe him dead for a decade wasn't very compelling and dented the foundation of the story for me. (And he never tells the whole family, so it still sort of feels unresolved at the end.) Also, Eliza's reasons for distancing herself from Patrick had the same problem. It just didn't seem to be that big of an obstacle for throwing away a relationship. But the emotion was still on point and the romance was sweet. Can't wait for Finbarr's story! (And I really hope that one is next!)

Patrick O’Connor’s story is here!!

In the sixth installment of the Hope Springs series, we finally get to hear Patrick’s story, the brother whom everyone believed was killed during the battle of Gettysburg. Patrick has been haunted for over a decade by the death of his brother, Grady. He is not only dealing with loneliness and guilt, he also has other demons he is fighting. During a particularly dark moment, he decides to finally reunite with his family, who had moved to Hope Springs, WY, over a decade ago.

Also heading west for a new start is Eliza Porter, a young widow with a toddler-aged daughter. After working in a factory in New York City, she is looking for a new life and has a few dreams of her own that she would like to pursue.

Eliza and Patrick’s story is not full of fluff and butterflies. They have a great connection right from the start. And while their conversations and witty banter are fun, their journey is heavy and raw. How does a broken person take a step toward becoming whole again? Moving to a town where “hope springs eternal” is a good place to start.

This is a clean romance that has more substance than just a love story. Each character has a difficult journey, but this is where the growth happens. And maybe—just maybe—going through those dark moments are what make the bright spots seem brighter. Having hope for what lies in store after the trials is just the beginning.

Hope humbly then; with trembling pinions soar;
Wait the great teacher Death, and God adore!
What future bliss, he gives not thee to know.
But gives that Hope to be thy blessing now.
Hope springs eternal in the human breast:
Man never Is, but always To be blest:
The soul, uneasy and confm'd from home.
Rests and expatiates in a life to come.
~Alexander Pope, “The Essay on Man”.

Oh, this book was lovely. This entire series is fantastic, and this book captured my heart as it continued the story of one of my favorite fictional families. Patrick's struggle was so heartrending, as he wants to be with his family but also doesn't believe he can ever truly belong again. He's so tender-hearted and I just couldn't help but adore him. Eliza was such a bright spot, with her big dreams and her determination, which inspired Patrick in turn. Besides delightful characters, the plot is so good--I love how this series deals with hard issues. Even though it's painful to see the characters go through their trials, it makes the books realistic and gives them a depth that makes them so much more than just a historical romance (which isn't to discount the romance--each love story in this series has been terrific!). That depth, along with well-developed, lovable characters, is what makes Sarah Eden my favorite author. Definitely put this on your to-read-as-soon-as-possible list!

5 stars and one of my picks for the best books of 2020!

Just another fantastic book in a completely wonderful series! I’m so happy with the characters and story line in this book. Life is so hard and if you have the right person by your side then you’ll always have an anchor and a light to guide you, and this book is proof of that.
This series is so heartbreakingly beautiful, and this addition is just as amazing as the others. You’re introduced to new characters and their lives, but you are also catching up with characters from previous books. According to me few things are better in the bookish world than keeping up with characters in a series, and this series does that.
Sarah M. Eden does an outstanding job of creating characters that you just can’t help but fall in love with. Plus the whole setting of Hope Springs is perfection, you can’t help but feel the importance of a strong and united community.
Once again, a Hope Springs novel would be a great addition to any and every (home) library.

Romance, clean, period; Series but stand alone read
Patrick and Eliza's stories/story is by far one of my favorites of this series. More of a 4.5 for me as a reader, but rounded up. Patrick's worries, brokenness, hurts, past, his deep concern for others, along with the secrets he has hidden in his heart were a great back story for him. Eliza's past that influences her dreams of the future, her concerns for herself and her daughter, and her hopes for the future melded together with Patrick's to make for two great MC in this novel. Their personalities good foils and good fits for their hearts. The humor, the quiet moments, seeing each other in their hearts all reflected through strong, well fleshed out side characters, mostly other family members in the community. There are so many people in this Valley that are pulling for them, that it made for a hopeful, sweet, positive read. This novel will resonate with you long after the book is complete. The way Patrick's family and this community pulled together for them, for their community, and for the plans they made for the community was lovely, sweet, honest and heartfelt. Their tender, hurting hearts, and sweet fall, along with the redemption (won't say who) made for a beautiful escape and sigh worthy HEA.
There are brief cameo's by the siblings and their spouses and other family members featured in other novels, but easily read without reading the other novels. I am sure there will be more stories and novels in this family saga, and I can't wait to read them all!
I received a copy from the author via Timeless Romance in exchange for a fair and honest review. My opinions are my own.

3.5. I've always enjoyed Ms. Eden's book, and the tales of the characters of the O'Conners and friends in Hope Springs. There were a few things that bugged me this time, though I'm sure that's more from a perspective change in my own life. I'm sure Ms. Edens target audience will completely love this book.

That said, I still like the setting and characters. Though I see a repeating theme of big secrets that people don't want to share, and that's the crux of the plot line. I can relate to that, but I prefer when a story isn't based off something that one honest convo could resolve. Plus, I thought the female MC overreacted to this big secret in a very stereotypical way of those who have no real life experience with it. Anywhoooo... Very clean, very sweet, and right in line with conservative views.

Perhaps it's time for me to move on from Hope Springs, as I no longer hold super conservative views.
I do want to see what happens with Finnbarr, so if his story is ever written, I'd circle back around.

Ever since I read Hope Springs in 2014 this has been my favorite series. This one may be my very favorite of all! I’m going to say that on these, you should read them in order. Otherwise, you’re going to be very confused about some of the story.

This one features Patrick O’Conner. He’s been kind of lost. In fact his family thought he died at the same time his older brother did. But he didn’t die, he did allow them to think he had, however. I liked Patrick. He feels a lot of guilt for things in his past. Most of that guilt wasn’t necessary. But he uses the guilt to let it drive his family away. When he really should be pulling them closer.

Then there’s Eliza. She was the roommate of Maura O’Conner. Her story is told in Long Journey Home. She’s come to Hope Springs to be the housekeeper for the Archers. And she has dreams, big ones. I love the way she works for those dreams. She also works equally hard to get Patrick to open up to not only her, but his family. I LOVED her character.

And Hope Springs….it’s almost like coming home for me. It’s definitely my happy place in book worlds. I can’t wait to get to read more of these.

I was sent a copy of Valley of Dreams as a gift from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This book is so well written. You will fall in love not just with Patrick O’Conner or Eliza Porter, but with an entire family and town of people. Sarah Eden writes her characters with such heart and believability that each one leaves an impression. And that impression leaves you wanting more of Hope Springs.

Sarah M. Eden has done it again. This is an absolutely beautifully written book. I love the Hope Springs series. The O'Connor family feels like they are my own. Valley of Dreams is Patrick's story. He thought he was doing his family a favor by letting them presume he was dead. But once his secret is told can he stay away? He has many trials to face, one being his families acceptance. Most are thrilled but his best friend/brother Ian, feels betrayed. This leads to one of the most heart wrenching yet beautifully heart cleansing scenes in the book. *Have tissues on hand. The trials are made a bit easier through his unlikely friendship with Eliza and her little daughter.

Patrick meets Eliza, and her sweet little daughter on the stagecoach leading home. I love Eliza's character. She is eternally optimistic and full of hope and cheer. "I'm not ever unhappy. Not for long at least. Happiness can be found even in the most difficult of situations." Eliza has been dealt some severe blows in her life but chooses to make the best of it. She is the best friend of Maura, Patrick's sister-in-law. She comes to Hope Springs,at the invitation of Maura, to make a better life for herself and her daughter.

There are so many wonderful jewels of wisdom throughout the book. I love how each of the books in the Hope Springs series deal with real life heartache, trials, joys and triumphs. The love the O'Connor family has for each other is inspiring. I cannot express how much I love this series. I HIGHLY recommend this book and the whole series. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book and all opinions are my own.

This is part of a series with the O’Connor family. Patrick hasn’t seen his family for years. They think he died in the Civil War. When he finally returns home, desperate for someone to save him from himself and his demons, he meets Eliza Porter on the stage ride to the West. She and her little girl, Lydia, are happy and cheerful, the opposite of Patrick’s surly demeanor. But she befriends him despite his gruff appearance, and they end up at the same place. So begins a story of redemption for Patrick and a second chance at love for Eliza. They both have dreams, but they seem impossible at times. But love makes all things possible, if they give it a chance. This wasn’t my favorite in this series, but I still loved the story and the characters. It dragged at times for me, but I was still invested enough to plug on to see what happened to all the extended family and Eliza and Patrick. 😊

Sarah creates an epic masterpiece in Valley of Dreams. I was captivated from beginning to end. I couldn’t wait to see how Patrick healed from ten years of self-judgement and fear. I loved the emotions between Patrick and Ian as they struggled to find common ground. One brother hurt by years of mourning, one hurt by his fear of revealing the truth of those ten years he was ‘assumed’ dead.
All my favorite characters from the Hope Springs Series made appearances in this sixth book of the series. I loved revisiting all of them and seeing how they and their families had grown.
I loved the humor in the book and felt my heart tug at the unhappy moments. I felt a kinship with Patrick through my own military service. I also related to Ian when there was a distinct chasm between him and his best friend. Eliza drew me in with her history of being looked down on and through the trials of her first marriage.
Overall, I loved this book as I have ever one of Sarah’s books. I highly recommend reading this book but keep a box of tissue’s nearby because I guarantee you will cry. It’s inevitable (I know because I don’t usually cry.)
Tender, heartfelt, and emotionally riveting. Take a journey into the Midwest in the 1870’s and fall in love with the characters and town of Hope Springs, Wyoming!

Ms. Eden has done it again. I have liked each book in this series better than the ones before it. I wasn't a huge fan of the first one because of the love triangle and it not resolving in that book but I've liked the story lines of these later ones a lot. This one dealt with the difficult topic of alcoholism.

I felt a lot of despair on Patrick's behalf through this book. He was in so much pain and inflicting more upon himself by not sharing his burden and instead, covering his pain with alcohol. Once back to his family he still suffered because of his inability to share. At first I couldn't figure out why he was doing it but that meant I got to share with his family the same frustration of not knowing what was the matter with Patrick. Eventually we got to know more details of his story and could understand better.

I loved Eliza and how she could see through the wall that Patrick continued to put up even when she didn't know why. Her conversations with him were often pretty funny. And Patrick's relationship to her daughter was sweeter than sweet.

I enjoyed the banter between the brothers and their parents' responses as well. They really are a great family. Still ache for Finbarr though. We saw some moments of him feeling more a part of the family but obviously he has a long way to go to recover from his emotional injuries. I look forward to his book.

I love the cover of this book too. Beautiful and romantic.

This is the 6th installment of the Hope Spring series where you can't help but be swept away by the dear people who live in this tiny Wyoming settlement of Hope Springs. Valley of Dreams follows the estranged brother Patrick who disappeared after the Civil War, wandered from place to place for ten years, then finally moves closer to his family. Tension and unease fill Patrick as he battles wanting to embrace his family but needing them kept at a distance. He finds friendship in Eliza, a young widow who is also newly settling in Hope Springs, having just escaped the slums of New York City. She becomes a light in his life, despite being dealt more than her fare share of bad hands. This captivating story takes you through the ups and downs of Patrick and his family's struggles. You feel their love and also their strife, making this Sarah M. Eden's most honest and raw story of the human condition. I'd definitely recommend this read.

This is one of those stories I couldn’t put down. I was blessed to get an advanced copy and am so blessed I was able to.

This is a story of healing. I find that these are the stories that I am best able to connect with. Patrick is easily becoming my most favorite O’Connor in this series. He had a lot to overcome, more than I think he knew, Eliza was easily the perfect balm, and he for her. When a couple comes in with individual problems and they help each other and are a good match, these are the kinds of stories I love,

I love stories of broken people finding hope and healing. Patrick’s interactions with Lydia and with Finnbar gave me hope for him early on. I can’t wait to see these characters again.

This one definitely has all the emotion and more that I have come to expect from Sarah Eden. She always leaves me longing for the next installment.

I absolutely love the Hope Springs series! They all are very emotional which typically I'm not a fan of books that make me cry especially this one which I was crying in the first couple pages. But I love the strength and growth that Patrick and Eliza go through. Especially Patrick who has many demons he is struggling with. I absolutely loved this book!

I didn't get to read the 4th book in the series before I dived into this one, so there's a few things that are yet unclear. I'm pretty sure they get cleared up in the 4th book, though.
The romance and plot in this one is pretty well-written. The plot is something akin to self-discovery and recovery for Patrick and learning to trust for Eliza. Lydia was super cute as well as her relationship with Patrick.

Romance: Clean. No explicit scenes or curse words.
Content Warnings: alcoholics (alcohol is obviously disapproved of, even by the alcoholic himself, and he eventually gets over alcohol).

As usual, I cried all the way through the book because that’s how Sarah Eden rolls. Great emotional hooks. Many of us can relate to the feelings of self-doubt and trying to find your place among your family members.
