Author has potential, but it gets bogged down.

The Author seems to have this fascination with horror tableaux and having someone puke. It's getting to be extremely over-used to the point becoming an internal trope.

Next is the increase of romcom and harem elements increasing throughout the books. This isn't a huge issue save that it's fluffing up page count as the MC and his harem have lovey-dovey or drama. The main issue that's coming from the harem is that it's completely stifling any male character developement. We haven't heard from Yun, Tinyr, Thomas, etc. They have fallen to the wayside as a cast of extras. Any new male characters seem to be either for numbers or to be antagonistic to allow the MC to exert his authority and his moral righteousness.

Futhermore, the Author needs to look into fixing some problema with spells. Healing spells have extremely long cast times, which makes then nearly unusable in the fast-paced combat the author portrays. Since he loves using World of Warcraft, the longest Healing spell in the game use to have a 4 seconf cast time, and Priests regularly moaned that it was nearly unusable in raids and dungeons. Later, it was reduced to a 2.5 second cast.

Next in the spell parade is Ressurrection. Yeah, that spell needs hard limits since it is KILLING any kind of really tension of loss. I mean, the Author wrote the spell description that states that it works on "players", and the MC is tossing out Ressurrections like he is digital Jesus.

The Author also needs to quickly fix spell usage issues or how the spell is worded as things like Power Wor...I mean Holy Shield reads like the caster can only have it on one target at a time, yet it's "spammed" willy-nilly.

Now, let's talk about Raise Zombie. This needs some limits since it's clearly being used as a crutch to make up for the level difference. What I mean is that Zombie levels are well over the MC's level even with the enhancing items he has. Speaking of, the MC has item that gives him +5 Zombies he can control...yeah. The author seriously needs to dial it back. Zombie levels need to be capped by the caster's level as a base. Also, different zombie power levels need to take up more of the control cap. Zombies from basic mobs take 1. Zombies from elites take 2. Boss Zombies take 4. Something akin to that. Lastly, I am waiting for the author to start leveling the zombies more and them acting more intelligent. He's hinted at it already but hasn't followed through on it yet. That's a can if worms to come, I suspect.

The whole game system looks and feels like it was created by ametuers. Money-grubbing ametuers at that with the P&M exam. Stay with me, I've just bought an expensive set of hardware in The Egg plus the monthly subscription fee. Now, the company offers an optional exam service for an additional cost of $500.00 to get a sizable statistical boost. They then tune the game to challenge the "Advanced" start characters, which means your "Basic" start characters are at a high disadvantage. So it encourages everyone to get on Pay-To-Win band wagon.

Also, I wonder why the company needs or wants the data. They would run smack into HIPAA law jurisdiction, and no sane company wants to have to adhere to government regulation than they must. All that Physical and Mental medical data has to be securely stored.

So there is my feedback on the series. I will not be continuing it as I had to force myself to get through Book 1. Books 2 and 3 were marginally better. I had to resort to making snarky notes to get through Book 4, so my expectations of Book 5 are pretty low at this point.

Because Levels and Mana doesn't matter!
Good reading to y'all!

and so, for me, the series went from a 4 star series to a 1 star, just like that. The problems I had with it are as follows:

1) MORE girls for him to lust after. At some point, it just gets annoying.

2) introduction of a centaur girl into the harem. Dear god, just no. The horse part is ALL horse, and I can not understate how much I did NOT want to envision THAT

3) *the MC is always successful and awesome*. I lost most interest in how fights were going to be resolved after there were too many high danger encounters when the MC always comes up with a plan to handle it. It's the equivalent of someone fudging dice rolls in a D&D campaign. There's no thrill of the risk of failure. Boring.

4) "Remind me to never piss you/him/her off" is a quote that in my personal opinion should NEVER be used unless it's informative to SOMEONE (another character, or in a mental monologue to let the "audience" know). Saying it just to underline how much of a badass someone just was is cringey. Really underlines why "show, don't tell" is a thing.

5) How many times does the MC need to come across people being racist or w/e and have to let everyone know that "racism is bad"? It got cringey after the 2nd time.

If there are any other reasons that I HATED slogging though this book, I'm having trouble remembering them over the above 5 reasons, which by themselves are enough to give this book the lowest rating I can.

Disappointing. Ruined a good thing...

Entertaining BUT there is too much erotic description of every female character. Sheesh. It gets irritating and distracts from the story. And how many times do I need to hear about the same thoughts over and over again? There was too much exposition! You said that 20 times already in this book and the first three. And stop soapboxing, it ruins the story.

Spoilers:
Too many story inconsistencies. How do you kill thousands (yes, thousands) of mobs/NPCs that are 10 to 15 levels higher than you and then only gain 3 levels? He soloed a few high-level NPCs and bosses, and still bearly moved in levels. If that is how much experience it takes to level, how is that sustainable for the rest of the world? Do characters need to commit xenocide to gain levels?! And that is including the experience from completing quite a few secret/rare quests.

Seriously, the first 3 books were really good, with good world-building and story development. But then this book destroyed the series. It was like he was a horny teenager who couldn't think of anything but erotica. Even in inappropriate situations. How can you make a child-like race erotic?! I should rate the book 1 star, but I can appreciate the work that went into the rest of the book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Loved it!

Just hit the part where it said **The story continues in Book Five coming soon** and now I am upset. I read through it too fast, and now I have to wait for book 5, which is going to be painful - because let's face it...book 4 just came out.

I am totally committed to these adventures in The World with Startum and his motley crew of friends and vassals! Book 4 is much longer than any of the previous books with plenty of action, great character and world building, and lots of laughs along the way. I really, really enjoyed this book and the whole series along the way. I like them so much I am buying them instead of borrowing through my Kindle Unlimited. I hope that this series continues for many more episodes.

Thank you Jason Cheek for another great trip through The World! Now get back to writing please?

4 Devil of Darkness Stars

Helping A Friend is the fourth novel in the LitRPG/GameLit series The World by Jason Cheek.

This series is getting more convoluted every new edition. Honestly, I’ll probably have to take a break after this installment. Especially since I’m pretty sure Jay’s abusive ex-girlfriend is about to pop up. Given how often Cheek mentions their relationship, or her treatment, or her horrid personality and lack of morals (every book) it’s pretty obvious at this point.

Startum somehow manages to continuously stumble across atrocious acts being committed, save a new species or people, snag another Nightmare level difficult quest, and inspire loyalty at every turn. It’s still nauseating the increasing amount of players or newfar that abuse the NPCs. Even in a game, it’s difficult to compartmentalize real people and fictional characters and treat them differently, at least for me. I think it further emphasizes each newfars personality or morality. Even if we’re just talking about the types of players who rush through NPC dialogue, I think that shows how selfish they can be on occasion. Just a thought though.

Those fucking Meer-Lizards though? I hope they were eradicated in this book! And that Cheek isn’t crazy enough to bring some rapey, egg laying monsters back throughout the rest of the series. Once was more than enough, and I will drop this series and never look back.

Ooh, there was less grammatical errors! Yay! Super ecstatic about this improvement. Especially since the ones I found were mostly small things.

Th Morticians, the pirates, the merchant family on the Wind Dancer, the Sea Orcs, the Sea Elves, the Grindylows, the Meer-Lizards, and the Sekolahians. So much amazing, while creepy, while world shaking activity occurs within these pages and we’ve yet to even reach Dominics land yet. This series is becoming more and more one of my favorite in the land of LitRPG. Cheek is an amazing author, and I love where his mind takes us.

Honestly, one of , if not my favorite Series.

Now, I will admit that the first three books annoyed me a bit in how they usually only covered one day or a few, but that was only because they were SOO good that I wanted to see what was going to happen. I didn't want to have to wait a whole real year or more to find out if Startum was going to get his castle or not. Yes yes the dungeon run was amazing and learning all this is great but damnit get to the end of the week!

The first two books were the typical litrpg books, unique in their flavor and plot with interesting characters and storylines as well as how Startum handles problems which is quite unique compared to other LitRPGs. Normally a character just rushes in and attacks attack attacks rarely thinking things out except in 'burst' of genius that come out of no where. Thats not Startum, he really does feel like a Pro-gamer and that he plans and thinks things through which is probably why a whole book can take place over only a day or two in game.

The third book got a little more 'mature' dropping away the common litRPG genre to start adding in adult elements with sexual tones and now this fourth book. It's hit gritty realism without holding back but not pushing to the obscene and offensive, at least not in my eyes.

This book faces the facts of what would happen in a virtual MMO that has adult content. Orcs pillage and raid taking elf's as sexual slaves in other fantasy novels. Sure...we know that but it's a general thing. Jason Cheeks has the balls to show what that would be like for the victim and that when storming a orc stronghold, you're going to come across that. Players think of NPCs as not real, so of course there are going to be some dicks who attempt to force NPCs into sex. This book faces that without going into obscene detail but still shows the realism. Monsters breed and attack, people get murdered and enslaved for coins. How does one handle immortal players who can respawn, what happens when NPCs fight back or don't know how to..All this is handled. Fine NPCs we've seen that but what of players when they get in those situations. Well, we see that here too.

Now the amazing realism that other authors won't touch as they plaster on fantasy paint of invisible line drawn moral players aside, is the story good? Hell yes, I thought this book would be one thing and bam turns into another, turns a boring milk run to a friend into a whole adventure when I thought helping his friend WOULD be the adventure...Rarely does a book surprise me like that.

The characters? All of them have unique personalities which a lot of other books ignore the supporting cast focusing soley on main character , but this book shows a broad range of personalities.

The main character? Love him still in this. In other books the character usually is smart or figures out a unique way to do things but then has tons of dumb moments and usually focuses purely on combat or crafting to make combat stronger. Not Startum, he is always looking for allies, vassels, Diplomacy, how to trick and manipulate and when he needs to fight. In other books you're always thinking...well why don't you just do this, or that...with authors ignoring that to further the plot the way they want. Fighting a bad as boss , Let's rush him and throw everything you have at him. Uh? Why not just kite him and wait for your army to show up and mash him. Well Startum would, he'd kite that bastard around until he could get all his zombies to hold the guy down the chop off his head. Saved a NPCs life? Well thats nice bye...Nope Startum offers them a place at his castle and to help the clan. Mana Crystals. Cool, lets use them to cook something. Nope. Lets use them to to fill a hot air balloon and get flying ship! Now he doesn't do these things but this is the sorta ideas Startum would have where other authors would be too in the lines of where they want the plot to go and overlook things anyone would think of to do

Now, a common thing in LitRPGs, common meaning many authors write it, no one coined it or owns it. Towns. LitRPGs are literature based on writing about them being in a game or some form like that, now games have towns and Real time strategy , so it's not something unique to any one author yet Jason Cheek takes it to a whole new level. Even other authors who have it tend to use it as a 'base' where they might develop solely in a defensive stance. The uniqueness here is Startum uses his base in a RTS way, in alliances , defenses and aggression . At every point you feel like the main character is focusing just as much on his town and growing it to expand into the world as you are his character where other books usually just have either or, points where it all about the town and then points where it's all about personal growth. Jason Cheek uniquely makes Startum seem like he's always focused on both in equal measure which makes his choices so much more interesting than the average route. Where one character in another book might kill a person to gain XP , you never know if Startum is going to do that or if he's going to try to make some sort of deal with them to get something for his town, be it resources, fighters, trade or a whole city!

I won't name names but only one other series about a certain goblin monster village ever seem to put this much effort into the town building RTS side of the game and that one only seems self guided desire to expansion and revenge while in The World, Startum is clearly doing it from the start to help his guild out, to stand for something and to help out NPCs which makes it wholey it's own..

World building, Characters, RTS, and even Realism all put to the side..is the story itself fun? It is something besides different and one of a kind? Yes! Damn straight the story is fun..it has it's many moments of laughs and fear for the characters, of worry and sadness. I also like that it's not shallow...A lot of characters in books always go for the 'oh so hot girl' that the main character can't resist. While Startum might admire a nice rack and hot woman, he doesn't go all weak willed and minded like some books where a pretty smile makes the main character become a dullard and fall for obvious traps. Startum goes for woman more based on their hearts, the two most romantic connections in this book is with one who partly isn't attractive and one who is supposedly ugly as sin in a cute way. Even then, he doesn't let his emotions make him error and make stupid choices which is great.

It also deals with other stuff like, if you're in the capsule for all day, wouldn't your bladder get full? What happens if you pass out in the capsule? What happens to your body while you log out, what do NPCs think of this? Okay that last one doesn't get 'dealt' with but it isn't ignored and many other mechanical questions that other books brush over.

I can say , I can't wait for the next installment, also the fact hat this book took place over a week rather than a few days was very much appreciated.

Final note? If you listen to this on audiobook, it is read by a great narrator who handles the voices amazingly with different tones for each character so you really will forget it's one person reading it. Not to mention where a lot of other authors take up pages of stats and constant character sheets making litRPG a sufferance on audiobook, this book like the others does not. It does have stats but not 'repeating' stats all the time. A perfect blend of knowing how strong things are without a constant repeating.

Wow, where to start? The way it's looking The World is going to be a massive, ever expanding map, which is a good thing. So many stories, plot lines, quests, hidden and rare items exist inside the potential of The World. In book 4 we see the growth of the MC emotionally as well as physically, not too many authors can portray emotional growth in a character. I found myself laughing at the antics of the players and the interactions with the NPCs, angry at the way Fylreh was behaving and saddened by Helgath's life. The length of the book is AMAZING!! At 700 something pages, I don't feel like I was left missing out on anything. Books that are 300 pages or less leave me a little angry like I was just getting into the foreplay and then I get a goodnight kiss.

Wtf this story got weird

The mc suddenly became a love sick p**** over a centaur he knew for one day. At least half of this book was filled with obbssesing over the relationship and then crying. Was enjoying the story and books but this one was hard to finish. wtf man....

It's "all that". And more.

I haven't enjoyed reading an author this much since Garon Whited's most recent anything. For me, that's a high compliment; masterful storytelling and excellent writing craft. Plentiferous kudos! 👏👏👏👏👏

There's so much going on in Book 4, a lot of authors would have broken things up into at least two books. The storyline segments are so rich in events, they qualify as sub-arcs. There's the move to and expansion of Broken Fang. New alliances. Magic upgrades and rescue of old friends. Then the trek to Myathlune. The sea orc pursuit and attacks. The sea elves rescue. Battles, crafting, world building, levelling, skill upgrades, alliances, plots, counter plots, and lots of new really wonderful characters. Something for everyone, gamer geek or not. I really love that the author is truly a gamer at heart. Years of play experience have resulted in incredibly balanced and nuanced perspectives. Respect.

Note: There seems to be a contingent of people in the various LitRPG FB groups that have formed what I'd call an AK (author killer) "Guild". They consider themselves "key members" and seem to think they get to decide who gets "rated up" or "rated down" in the genre and have left some pretty nasty review comments. They actually reported this author to Amazon for plagiarism and got his first book suspended. The complaint didn't stand up to review and, happily, the book is back. I'm so disappointed in these people that I'll read LitRPG, but if an author "links" to these FB groups, I no longer leave a review (excepting for a few authors I've been reading before this stuff got started).

Interestingly, I don't seem to find these trash reviews on Goodreads. But this is also why it's so important to support an author you like by posting a review on Amazon and not just rate it at Goodreads.

So... This is not the only author that looks to have been 'hit'. If you read this genre, please be mindful that unkind reviews and harsh claims might not be true, unbiased reviews?

Read in Kindle Unlimited. Thank you!

Good

Like where the story is going, getting a little harem ish though, like the fact that it wasn't 200 pages, like that the world is expanding, and there are new things and characters being introduced, pacing was a little slow, not in terms of action but rather the story only advanced a couple of days, he still hasn't made it to actually help his friend. Looking forward to the next one though.

Great but Getting Risque'

It seams like a little MSE influenced plot at times and I am hoping that he doesn't go full Ainta Black. This is a very entertaining fast pace action packed story that I really enjoyed. I also feel like the MC deserves more levels for finishing other players nightmare quest. I know your slowing the MC OP, but there is no way most of the other players have done as much. Great Read please don't go harem.

Good book

Really good book with a long storyline, tons of action, lots of variety in the battles and many new characters. The only part I didn't like was the direction the author took the MCs relationship. Out of all the woman, kind of ridiculous to pick one that is literally physically impossible to match up with. Can't wait for the next book.

Fat paced fun

Fast paced action from start to finish. Startum is back and on a quick trip to help his guild mate in the human realms. The game has decided to reward his success with even more difficult challenges. Large rival guilds have declared all out war and powerful evil races that want to enslave or kill his allies block his path. Part town building and npc recruiting style of Brent Roth with the non-stop battle and loot fest that I love from "The Land" series. This Lit RPG series is quickly becoming a new favorite for me

If you haven't started yet then stop dawdling and get on this awesome ride.

This part of the series lost me a bit. I liked the fights and characters. But the obsession with the Centaur lost some points for me. It seemed light plot would progress and then the focus would shift back to the awkward relationship. I am waiting to see if the fifth book can even out the writing of the relationship.

This book had a lot of moving parts to the story, and it was enjoyable while still making the reader what they would have done in that case verse what the main character did. Overall well done

The only thing that kept it from five stars was the whole elf/centaur romance thing. Maybe I'm just prudish but reading about a passionate love affair between what is basically a human and a horse-person is a little off putting. Other than that it was a fantastic read and one that I highly recommend.

Abit heavy on the rape but not descriptive and wprth the read

Good book, the gamelit elements fall pff a bit through out the story but it is still really good reading. My only discrepancy is the amount of rape. Its not overly descriptive or uncomfortable so that isnt the problem just think the bad guys could be bad for other reasons 9r something. Rape is horrible stuff, using it so often almost makes it expected or ordinary which is its own kind of messed up i suppose. But either way i plan on getting book 5 in the future, hopefully with some less rape
