A mysterious book from a long-forgotten uncle upends junior accountant Marion Baldwin’s life. His only chance at survival will require supernatural bondings with exotic witches.
Marion Baldwin, Mars to his friends, has built a nice, safe life that guarantees a slow path to moderate wealth, two-point-five kids, a house in the suburbs and a wife on the PTA. In other words, he’s bored beyond reason and has no idea how to turn away from his dismal future.
Life changes dramatically for Mars when one fateful Saturday morning, a messenger delivers a book entitled Familiar Magic, a Guide. The book is ancient, and while Mars suspects it’s valuable, he has no idea just how far off the rails things are about to get. You see, ownership of a Familiar’s Guide has marked Mars as magical familiar, and no, it doesn’t turn him into a cat. Much the opposite, it marks him as an extremely rare individual, capable of expanding a witch’s power and training her on the most powerful spells available.
Of course, the real problem with becoming an unbonded familiar is that witches from all over the globe will hunt him down for the power they’d gain. Like chum in shark-infested waters, he’s finally hunted down by another familiar, Niles Dunn, uses Mars’ inexperience against him and takes away Mars’ choice by forcing a bond between him and a petite, sassy witch.
What the mystical world doesn’t understand is; Mars has a gift that’s never been seen before. He’s not limited to bonding with a single witch. And when his new nemesis, Niles, kidnaps a trio of witches Mars has just met, it’s game on.
Lust witches is a story with unconventional relationships and un-varnished descriptions of intimate moments. There are adult themes and moral ambiguities.
The story and world are great. The writing style is engaging. The individual characters are distinct and well crafted. The relationships between the protagonist and the individual women are thoughtful and fleshed out.
However, some of the conflict that drives the plot seems contrived. There are also instances where something magical was explained logically, but later that logic was contradicted. The author could have easily just NOT attempted to explain it and left it up to being caused by magic.
Worst of all for me, is the type of harem this is turning into. It's more of a group bisexual women brought together occasionally by one heterosexual man. Some of them have explicitly stated that they are open to, and plan to have, relations with one another without the protagonist's presence.
Also, the conversations and activities are trending toward the types of kinks the deserve a disclaimer in the summary. Which scares me because I've been seven books into a great series, when the protagonist starts getting pegged by a female shapeshifter and makes the protagonist ask for it. So I'm quite wary.
The story has more substance than you would be lead to believe by the title, though there is plenty of "plot."
Like other have done a better job of saying, the characters aren't flat, many of them are quite relatable, and the plot neither feels too rushed or too slow.
~~Slight Spoilers~~ I do have to complain about the bad guy. He seems to have more plot armor than anyone else in the story. He has powerful cronies that follow him inexplicably (explainable, but never done) but most of all it He can do whatever he wants without repercussions. There's constant talk of the "the council" and we know his cronies violated their rules at least once in a big way. The main character is constantly staying his hand because of them (presumably) but that restriction never applies to the bad guy. Familiar can't hurt each other by their rules but they're also untouchable by Witches and all else as well? He kidnaps and tortures them and there is no possible recourse; they just have to take it "because of the council." Why is anyone respecting the council at all? They do nothing but stay the hand of those who would defend themselves.
4.5. A very enjoyable read and not outright smut as the title might suggest. I feel that I've been reading too many books of this sort when I start to recognize influences from other authors, but that may just be coincidence.
The rating is for the entertainment experience as I found this engaging; it is by no means high literature. That's not the insult it may seem though, as a lot of critically-acclaimed stuff is painful/boring to read. If the blurb appeals, the MC is a decent sort and the women are treated as serious characters within the limits of developing multiple characters.
You can indeed judge this book by its cover. I'm already reading the next book, so that's the real judgement on this one.
I really enjoyed this story I like the way the characters were portrayed and the way they interacted reacted with each other. I like the way he writes the people in his stories they seem real and the things they do in realistic. Each of them have their own personalities flaws positives and beauty and struggles. Anyway it had a lot of very adult situations some were kind of horrific but some were very very sexy scenes written tastefully definitely not fade to black fair warning. Anyway I'm going to leave this review at this I'm going to move on and read the next book can't wait to see what happens to the people when they fight against the challenge that's coming their way.
Fantastic for the men's fantasy genre. There's legitimate growth in multiple characters, the MC isn't a cookie cutter cliché nor is he perfect when it comes to his power or his relationships. The women in this book feel so much more real than in other fantasy/erotica. They actually have imperfections both physically and otherwise, something you don't realize is missing from literally every book you read in the genre until you finally have it. The fact there is a real story, character growth, and women who are more than stereotypes to fill in a harem fantasy, is just icing on the cake. Very much worth reading and here's hoping to more volumes and worldbuilding.
Decent story, fast paced, way too easy for villain to succeed
I'm gonna just put what I didn't enjoy, cause the magic and harem was well enough done. The issue is that the only reason a second book is happening is pure incompetence and/or plot armor for the bad guy. This murderer/rapist is knocked out in their grasp and they let him go? No amount of "but the council" logics up to allowing that. What council allows that anyway? Any and all credibility with that aspect is gone for me.
I enjoyed this authors other work, but this one is just fantastic. Excellent writing, likable characters, meaningful interactions, and a good story. I only follow 3 or 4 authors, but after today you can add a +1 to that number, and it is all form this book. Really happy I read this and am hungry for more!
I had zero intentions of reading this, as I was on Kindle Unlimited looking for a different book. Because of the cover art I had thought it was a graphic novel; sadly it was not. The characters were not interesting enough. Marion and all these random female witches that lust over him are nothing to swoon over. I should've kept on scrolling.
I wanted to see what it would look like from a man’s perspective. Generally the dark romance/romance books I read are written by women. It was interesting. I didn’t hate it at all. Not that I thought I would but I assumed it would be bigoted. It was not. It’s a quick, cute, steamy read and I would recommend it.
Incredibly forced. Nothing about this seems believable.
Character reactions and interactions are just horribly inept. This is definitely a case of the writing failing the content. From the very start, this failed to get you invested in the story.
A truly entertaining first book in a new series!!! An interesting look at magic, amazing adult fantasy activities and good world building!!! The perfect blend for a can't put down story!!!
OK yea I know what your thinking. Overall was a pretty good story. Listen to audio version liked the narrators. Some of the sex seemed added in just for the sex not the story but like i said overall a nice little story.
This is one of those rare books, that once you start you just can't put down. The plot was great, character development was awesome, and the end amazing. I can't wait to start book 2.
Excellent tale, it's faced paced, with well crafted characters, lots of adventure and action in and out of the sheets! I'm looking forward to the next book!
