Skulls and Scares

Rate this book
When Thea Miller sells 34 plastic skulls to the gorgeous stranger at a garage sale, she doesn't know he takes her mother's life savings with him.
As the town's new resident psychiatrist, Charles Montgomery has a reputation to uphold; giving in to his desire for twisted games isn't on the agenda. But Thea is hard to resist, and when he catches her breaking into his house to steal the skulls back, he proposes a deal: a chase through the woods. If she wins, the skulls are hers.
One game of tag sounds easy enough, but there's something Thea has yet to learn: Charles never plays fair, and there's more on the line than money and plastic skulls.
His sweetness hides a thirst for her fear; will she follow him into the dark to play?

What I Liked: I really enjoyed reading this. It had a really light and fun tone, and was so easy to read. I liked both the main characters, Thea and Charles, and the chemistry between them was really hot and steamy. I wasn’t so keen on the set up between the two of them in the first place - the skulls felt a bit forced - but the relationship as a whole worked really well for me. I liked that they actually dated one another, that they talked through their relationship and all of the kinks they were engaging in, and that there was a lovely warm sweetness at the heart of their relationship. They genuinely liked one another - it was very clear and very sweet to see.
I also have to say that I did like that
What I Didn’t: I thought it needed to be longer. Not necessarily in a ‘I want more of these characters way’ - although that was certainly part of it - but I felt like some plotlines felt too heavy and needed more time to breathe. I thought the author actually did them well: Thea’s mother’s Alzheimer’s was heartbreaking, as was Thea’s abandonment issues, but I felt like this shorter novella format didn’t do them justice.
Overall: I really enjoyed reading it. The sex scenes were really hot, but the romance also had a lovely, gentle heart to it that I really liked. I just wish there had been a few more chapters to allow some of the plotlines to develop more naturally. But I’m looking forward to reading more from this author and from this particular series.

Better than I expected

This is one of those books that really make you think…but you have to go into it with an open mind. Not everyone is vanilla and no one should judge you for your kink.

That being said there’s scenes that can trigger. The kink is that dark, but underneath it all it’s a story about love, acceptance, and self discovery.

The author addresses with Alzheimer’s without it being over the top and shows knowledge of how much of a roller coaster it can be for the caregiver.
