My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media LLC for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

The fan service, incredibly difficult to follow action sequences and ugly artwork just bring this book down for me. I like the story, the characters are interesting, I like how the MC H is trying to get everyone to work together so no one fails (honestly, you would think the Hunter's Guild would want as MANY people who are skilled as they can get, yet they make the tests so hard, there are years where NO ONE passes? And with Hunter's dying/aging out, you would think they would be less hardcore. Also, two of their BEST hunters are doing the training, which takes MONTH on a ship, so they can't get back to land to help if Bad Guy Disasters happen and you have plot holes I am only now realizing...) but after realizing the gaping plot holes, I'm seriously re-considering if I like the plot anymore....

Ok, still like the MC H. And I didn't HATE this book, so it's 1.5 stars, rounded up to 2.

I'm not hunting (pun intensional) down the next volume, but if it comes to my store, I'll give it a page through. The mystery is interesting, but not a big enough draw for me to want to read the next one.

If you like action and don't require plot to hang your hat on, along with teamwork, this might work for you. It didn't for me.

I am wavering between a 2.5 and a 3 rating. This entire volume only focused on one event which is the "Disembarking Event", for the most part. There is SO MUCH talking and "We're stronger because of our friendship!" time of speeches. This entire thing is giving me way too much My Hero Academia or even Naruto energy. It felt like it went on forever, and I felt myself getting increasingly bored as I keep reading. This is a huge pity because a few pages at the very start of the volume were VERY intriguing. I was VERY curious about what was going on with those three characters and their conversation. I was far more interested in finding out what they were talking about, then any interest I had in what the main character was doing. The rest of the volume just felt bland and like every other shonen that came before it. (Also why are the two female teachers, both of whom are muscular, being drawn like...that...If you told me their designs were from an H manga, I would fully believe you. Yikes.)

The majority of this volume was 5 stars good, but the last 2 chapters have been painful to read. I think the series was cancelled, because the story just got rushed to what seems like the final arc out of actually nowhere. It sucks, cause it's been really amazing and was looking to be one of the next heavy hitters. Jump needs to start letting these series breathe more. MHA, Dr Stone, and Jujutsu Kaisen are all supposed to be ending soon. They need more big titles to fill those spaces, and Red Hood could've been that. I hope I'm wrong, but the writing is on the wall. My guess is there's only gonna be one more volume.

Thank you, Viz Media & NetGalley, for allowing me to read the next volume in this fun manga adventure series. All opinions are my own!

The next stage to becoming Hunters for the guild begins with a master test... Cops & Robbers??!

This is the sort of humour and edge I like in manga stories; it gives a fresh take to the storyline's seriousness. At heart, this story holds secrets and dark truths in a world we are just entering, but by working the story this way, we see more/newer sides to characters in ways we aren't used to. I love the original take!

I continue to love this series and cannot wait for more!

This was a great volume! I like that we finally are getting to the disembarkment exam. I really like that we are getting to see more of the characters that are on the Ironworks. I can't wait to read the next volume to see how the exam ends!

Before we begin this review, I would like to thank NetGalley and Viz Media for the opportunity to review this title.

We’re back in the world of the Hunters Guild: Red Hood, this time, things are beginning to pick up. Since our last review, Velou and Grimm made it to the mobile training facility known as the Ironworks. As many hunters know, the world isn’t exactly all sunshine and rainbows, it can be a pretty mean place, especially when you’re facing threats like werewolves. Anyway, back to the topic on hand, after three grueling months of nonstop training, Velou and the other examinees are about to face their most difficult trial yet, the Debarkation Exam! The name of the game is Cops and Robbers, and Grimm and Debonair are the Cops! The Trainees are on the run as the robbers, but Velou has a trick up his sleeve, but will his teammates trust him enough for the plan to work?

I had some nitpicks in the last volume review for Yuki Kawaguchi’s Hunters Guild: Red Hood but the second volume was a step up. One of my earlier complaints was that it felt more like a Demon Slayer story, but set in a Fairy Tale World, that observation still stands. There is more to it thankfully, he improved on his previous mistakes from the first volume and brought us memorable characters that make you want to cheer for their success and ones that you would love to hate. Their Debarkation Exam felt more like a familiar call back to his previous time with Kohei Horikoshi on My Hero Academia. It’s not a bad thing, it is a good thing for familiar readers.

It gives readers a break from the storyline’s serious tone by providing an edgy, humorous approach with a rousing game of Cops and Robbers! At the heart of this story, it holds the secrets and dark truths of this new world. It also is a good tribute to The Brothers Grimm, who not only popularized, they are the best-known storytellers of Folk Tales. Out of the characters that were introduced in the second volume, I would have to say that the Hot-Blooded Debonair Diamond is my favorite of this series. She is fierce, strong, and reminiscent of the Amazons in Greek Mythology, not to mention the curse that was placed on her by a witch, which causes her body to emit scorching levels of heat. But luckily, she can use it as a weapon.

As for the trainees, we’re only introduced to a handful of them but it is expected in most stories, especially when one is reduced due to cancellation, shortened to three volumes. The biggest highlight of this exam was the fact that Velou was a strategist, Tytlf’s situation involving his failed attempt in the previous exam, Merriopios remarkable talent, and Bonkers’ Backstory. As far as it goes, it is a step up but also a step back, the artwork and story have improved but it has been sped up to the final arc. Hunters Guild: Red Hood Volume Two is available now wherever books are sold, it is unfortunate that the series is coming to an end so soon but someday, it could get an anime adaption. Only time will tell!

Book: The Hunters Guild Red Hood, Vol. 2
Authorr: Yuki Kawaguchi
Rating: 2 Out of 5 Stars

I don’t know how I feel about this series. As I said in my first review, I think the bones of a great series are there, but it is not coming across the best. I feel like the plot and the pacing is uneven. Everything is go, go, go, but there is not any time to develop anything.

I am going to try to keep my review as vague as possible, but since this is the second volume, there may be spoilers for the first volume.

This one picks right up where volume one left off. Our characters are in the middle of their training. They have an exam and it’s a game of cops and robbers. The goal is to keep yourself from being arrested and free those who have been. Those who are free at the end pass. I understand the reasoning behind this game, but I thought it was strange. The goal is to go from prey to hunter, but it doesn’t come across the page the best. I think, again, had things been a little bit more developed, this would have made much more sense. It was missing something to make the stakes higher.

I think the lack of making the stakes higher has to do with the fact that I feel like we still don’t know our characters. I have not read a manga series this short before. I am used to the longer style, in which we see the bonds between our characters form over time. In this one, they have to happen rather quickly. Why? The series is not very long. This would have worked had these bonds been in place before the start of the series, but none of these main characters are familiar with each other. As they are not, we need to have this time to allow characters to develop a relationship with each other and become the fighting force that they are supposed to be.

I think this is my overall complaint with the series. The bones of a great story are here, but the fact that everything is rushed does not do it for me. I like to see these bonds and I like to see how we get from point to point. Having everything thrown at me like this is not working for me. It makes for a rather jarring reading experience. Honestly, if there was more than three volumes, I probably would not have finished this series.

I do want to see how it ends, but I do not think this is going to be a winning series for me.

The test is finally come to figure out who can make it into the hunter’s guild. This book doesn’t go all the way through the task. Its 130 pages of Hunter’s Guild and the last 70 pages were two stories that have nothing to do with this book. One story is about hermit crabs that grow and start taking human houses, and the other one is romantic comedy. I had someone ask me if the series was canceled and it feels like maybe it should be. Nothing happened in book 2. They didn’t even finish the test which only lasts for two hours so to me this volume was unsuccessful and I have no desire to read the rest.

There's something weird going on with the werewolves and witches and The Mayor. Like, "high meta theory concepts" weird.

Meanwhile, Velou has survived his time in Ironworks boot camp and now it's time for the final exam to see if he can actually become a hunter.

Then about halfway through the book, it switches to two one-shots; one about kaiju-sized hermit crabs and one about human/ghost rom-com. And here I thought this story was short enough, now we're cutting into the page time with nonrelated (but still interesting) bonus material.

This series has 3 volumes.

For this one, the main story didn’t really have much to do with hunting werewolves; instead, it deals with hunting bells like Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura do for the Bell Test in Naruto. At least, that’s what I equate the main story to in volume 2.

In the little oneshot, the Hermit Crab Demolishing story was super interesting, and the ghost one was meh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I’m in an action phase, so the “romance” wasn’t that enticing.

Anyway, I can’t wait to read the “final” volume. I say final because I bet there will be more to this series since there is a lot to cover for just one book.

weird reading this because there's not a single concept i don't enjoy, everything is full of personality, but you can also feel how rushed this story was. there's barely a chapter spent on the 3 month boat ride to the test, when that could've been worth at least a volume's worth of story and character building ...

This has lost me on the game part! It wasn't clear what was going on! I believe only the author know what he had in mind. Other than that, I didn't enjoy the one shots! By the end I was kind of disappointed. First volume was way way better than this one, sadly!

I really enjoyed both of the one-shots included in this volume. I actually was more drawn to the male lead in the Hermit crab story than Velou.
