Nothing could have prepared Nyssa Ardelone for the treachery that lurks inside Fortune’s Fall. What began as a joyful reunion with her family soon plunges into chaos, with Nyssa at the center of misplaced accusations that could be catastrophic for everyone. Confused and still grief-stricken over the friends she’s lost, Nyssa begins to question whether her journey to Fortune’s Fall was worth the cost.
When she learns that President Omri has arrested the exiles and plans to send them to the most notorious prison in America, Nyssa's convinced Omri's punishing them for her sins, and she sinks into even deeper despair. But there might be a way to save them, and Nyssa jumps at the chance to remedy what she feels is her fault.
The task is dangerous, though, and if she fails, she’ll lose everything. If she succeeds, the people of Fortune’s Fall will embrace her at last, and the path will open for their ultimate return to Maren—the home Omri stole from them fifteen years ago. With the help of family and a few unlikely allies, Nyssa sets out to make things right. But the stakes are higher than before, and her newfound faith has grown shaky. When the mission doesn’t go as planned, Nyssa faces a choice unlike any she’s ever had: press on despite her doubts, or give up and leave the exiles—and everyone she loves—to their fate.

Wow! I read the first of this series back in the summer, and once I finished it, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next one! (Though that first one was a bit of a heartbreaker ... be sure to read these in the order they come. That is of the utmost importance.) But wow - what a great continuance of the first in the series!
Our main character, Nyssa, is the only character with a POV - something I usually wouldn't enjoy as much, but I think it works perfectly for this one. Nyssa really struck me as a teenager, which was quite well-done, because kids sometimes are written either too old or too young for their ages. There were times I was a little irritated at her just because of decisions and attitudes she had, but I think that was realistic. She's not perfect, and she has a long way to go in her walk with the Lord. As for the other characters, they were great! It was good to see Nyssa finally around her parents for a bit, as well as her relationship with Jek. I hope he's in there some more in the next book - those siblings relationships are some of the best! There were a couple reappearances of people from the first book, one I wasn't too happy to see but involved an interesting twist. And the other Overall, a strong cast of side characters really rounded this book out.
As for the plot ... wow. I never knew where this was going to go. The first part wasn't quite as fast-paced as the first one, but it wasn't boring. There was good character building and setup for the rest of the novel. And by the time we got to the end - wow! There was plenty of action and suspense to go around. I was turning those kindle pages with a fury! And of course, there was a big cliffhanger at the end, and now I have to wait several months for the next book ... That's what good books do to you, right?
The themes/moral of this book was learning to trust the Lord and working through doubt. I really appreciated Nyssa having such a relatable struggle. However ... I would've liked a little more of an emphasis on the moral in general. I think it was set up so well for Nyssa to have to go through these issues, and having a bit more discussion/time on them would've been lovely. In general, I would've liked to have seen more about Nyssa's faith in Christ. It was a little too vague at times for me.
Overall, though, this book was a great, clean YA book. If you're looking for Christian YA books, look no further. This series is full of action, intrigue, and great relationships. I'm looking forward to the third one in the series!

If you haven't read Katherine's first book on this series then you need to. This is definitely one of those series you must read in order. This second book did not disappoint. She had me captivated the entire time and I wanted more!! The problem with this is that giving you a review without spilling the beans is hard! So let's see what I can tell you.
In this book the story continues where it left off in the first book and we see Nyssa with her parents in Fortune's Fall but the reunion doesn't last long as things kind of go out of track and not everyone is happy to see the dream interpreter and the fact that she is regarded so highly. When she discovers that President Omri has taken all the exiles to prison she feels compelled to rescue them and in the process gets caught. Through this she experiences her new faith being shaken and she can't help but question if she made the right choice. I have to say I was so excited about one of the parts and to see a particular character but that is all I will say about that. However once again the author left me in a cliffhanger wondering what is going to happen and wanting more from the story.
If you enjoy storylines like Hunger Games then this is the story for you. These are also perfect for tweens as they are very clean reads and very little romance. They are not very long books but they are intriguing and take you on a great adventure. One that you do not want to pass up! So go grab both books and thank me later 😉.
I received a copy of this book from the author. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Scriptural Connection Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God. Psalm 42:5
Spiritual Themes Nyssa has recently placed her trust in God and throughout the novel, her newfound faith is shaken. Nyssa experiences fear and frustration and even expresses anger toward God. But she’s also determined to hold onto Him. There’s not a big, obvious resolution and “aha” moment. And, honestly, I think that’s refreshing, in some ways.
While I VERY MUCH appreciate faith-filled novels where I experience the Lord’s closeness alongside the characters, I also liked Barber’s realistic portrayal of our faith. Because there are seasons where it’s harder to hear the Lord’s voice, where our circumstances can motivate us to believe lies about our identity, about God’s goodness or about His power.
Where other books may show these moments, but typically resolve the conflict by novel’s end, The Exiles has a less tidy ending. There is a moment of resolution. It’s just much more subtle than the typical Christian novel, which feels true to life.
What I Liked I ate up Fortune’s Fall in a day, and since that time, I had been eagerly awaiting the release of The Exiles. It was so exciting to dive back into Barger’s futuristic dystopia, while getting to know a new cast of characters (or rather, making better acquaintance with secondary characters from the first book).
As mentioned above, I appreciated the spiritual themes and the lack of a tidy conclusion. I enjoyed reading about the political climate at Fortune’s Falls and the tensions arising there. As the title suggests, book two centers around the exiles, which makes sense, given that book one was inspired by the book of Daniel. While book two is less of a clear correspondence (but I think book three will look a bit more like book one), I like the social justice questions/implications that can be drawn from the subject of exiles. The Bible is very clear about God’s heart for social justice, which is a theme that American Christianity often neglects. The Exiles depicts the mistreatment of those exiled, which not only provides more context for the book of Daniel, but also brings to mind the treatment of the “alien and the foreigner” and other oppressed groups, in our own communities. There were some fun plot twists and developments, which I certainly won’t spoil, here. The continued dream-interpretation motif was engaging and I really liked that Nyssa was now interpreting through the lens of faith, not just psychology. There’s a teeny bit more romance in the book, and it was such a sweet, wholesome romance (more on that in the Romantic Content section). The ending! Without getting into spoilers, I just want to note that I am very eager to see how the trilogy will conclude.
Romantic Content I feel that Barger did a fantastic job of handling the romantic content in the novel. There is one kissing scene, but I feel that it was some really well, with a very strong emphasis on commitment. This is what I’m looking for more of with romantic plots/subplots.
Recommendation Status This is a book that’s easy to recommend, and I actually can’t think of any reservations :). I would, however, highly suggest that this is read after book one.
It may sound cliche to say, but words cannot begin to describe how much I loved the first book in Katherine Barger's Exiled Trilogy. I inhaled it as fast as humanly possible, I thought about it long after finishing it, and I gushed about it and recommended it to anyone I possibly could. So to say I was excited to get to read the second book would be an extreme understatement. I'd grown so invested in these characters, and their fight to keep the name of Jesus alive in a future world where religion has been outlawed. I was expecting great things, and I can wholeheartedly say that Katherine Barger exceeded every single one of my expectations. This book is honestly one of the best ones I've read the entire year, and I don't know how I'm possibly going to wait for the release of the third book.
If you're a fellow lover of dystopian novels, but you're not a fan of the unnecessary content that's making its way into so many of them, then you truly need to check out the Exiled Trilogy. The Exiles is full of vibrant storytelling, descriptive settings, and characters that truly come alive to the reader on the page. Nyssa is one of my favorite YA protagonists of all time, and I loved the fact that she displays both bravery and responsibility as fights to make choices that will help spread the word about Jesus and help give her family and friends the future they've long been praying and believing for.
This one definitely kept me on the edge of my seat, and it's action packed from the get go. The plot twists and turns, the reader is constantly guessing and second guessing every character introduced in the story, and yet the ending is still a massive surprise, and is executed flawlessly.
I have to say though that my favorite part of the entire story is the faith element, and how authentically Nyssa's journey is portrayed throughout the entirety of her journey. She naturally has questions as she watches her family and friends suffer, and I loved how it's clearly represented that faith doesn't mean we won't ever go through hard times, but rather that He will be with us whenever we do.
This book was everything I've been waiting for ever since finishing the first book, and I can't possibly recommend it enough. Definitely pick this one up for yourself, and be prepared to fall in love with this heart wrenching tale.
Final Rating: 5/5.
Thanks so much to Katherine Barger for allowing me to read and review this!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
So I just finished this book and I have to say. I’m a little upset on how it ended. It was overall and AMAZING book. But I honestly think if was just because the book didn’t end how I wanted. Which is fine.
The beginning started off east of I already immediately got hooked
I was a little worried at first that I would forget what stuff happened in the first book because I had been almost a year (maybe not sure) since I read it. But once I started reading everything just came rushing back!
Around the middle I started getting worried about how it would all end. Because nyssa got fought by Omri and I was worried that she would get killed or something bad would happen to her. But that’s just my imagination.
Towards the end I kinda drifted a little from reading. Like before I would read non stop but I kinda got off that schedule. But I only had a little left to read. And as I was reading g the last little parts. Where the exiles come in and they find ethiland. And make a plan to help the exiles to get the home.
But right at the end where they board the plane. And Pallas refuses to get on. I started wondering what was gonna happen. But the next chapter comes and I find out that nyssa is staying with omri.
I’m going to be honest. Little upset. Because honestly I wanted her and Greer to grow up and have a good life at fortunes fall and for them to go back to maren. But that’s just because I love romance and happy endings.
But pls don’t take me saying how I didn’t like the ending the wrong way. Because I think that overall this book deserves more then 5 stars. And I’m hoping there will be a third. I think that this book was better then the first. It was amazing. I was hooked very soon!!! GREAT JOB

Wow to a great sequel that is JUST as unexpected as the first book! Nyssa is not in Fortune's Fall very long when something goes wrong and an opportunity comes up for her to help the hundreds of exiles now imprisoned by Omri. Nyssa doesn't hesitate taking a HUGE dangerous risk to help the good guys, no matter the cost to her own life. Her newfound faith is refreshing, but she will be tested more than once and I agreed with every question she had.
There is slight romance in the story as Nyssa holds hands with Cass and she shares two kisses with someone else later on. Honestly, I'm for Team Cass. He is worth her heart more than anyone else is.
I couldn't believe the ending...Nyssa is equal parts CRAZY and BRAVE putting herself last in every situation. The storm was written so tangibly as she battles the elements to do her part in the mission. Friends become enemies and enemies become friends, you just NEVER know who will betray you in one scene and then help you in the next. But NONE of that slows Nyssa down as she helps the exiles. Omri is going DOWN and I can't wait to see what happens in the conclusion. I was even going through a stressful situation in my own life while reading this and Nyssa's story gives me hope.
I was given a free ebook. I was not required to write a positive review, the thoughts and comments are my own.
I love a good action-filled YA fiction book that pulls it off without foul language and sexual suggestions. That makes for a good book to start off with for me...
A lot went on in this story and I was glad to see it connected so well to the first book and that some of the characters that I rooted for in the first book made a reappearance. While there was a good flow with the plot and the story moved along well, I didn't feel as engaged or invested in the characters as I had with the first book. I can't put my finger on it but maybe the tension scenes or internal dialogue didn't resonate enough for me. But don't let that stop you from reading this book--it's still a great read!
What I did appreciate about this book was that it wrapped up the loose ends and didn't leave me frustrated with unresolved conflicts and Barger did a good job dangling a cliffhanger at the end that makes you want to go on to the next book.

Clean fast-paced Young Adult literature. It’s a continuation of the storyline that shows a young lady trying to trust God who experiences encouraging friendships throughout the plot. If you read the first book of the trilogy, then this second book will pick up for you right where you finished. If you read too many books in between or it's been some time since you read the first novel and forgot some of the characters, Katherine Barger does a great job providing the back stories in the first few chapters without it being forced.
Barger keeps you guessing as to who is the traitor. Appreciated the couple of one-liners that added a moment of humor to the story. Nyssa faces adversity the entire novel, so the weather was another gut punch to an already difficult time!
I look forward to seeing how Milo’s character develops in the third novel, does Omri come to recognize God as his savior, and how the people return to Maren as prophesied.

The Exiles is an action-packed second installment of the Exiled Trilogy following Nyssa Ardelone, dream interpreter to the president. The first book captured me and left me wanting much more, so I was very excited to jump back into the saga of Nyssa and her attempt to save those she loves. The vivid, unpredictable storyline gripped me once again and I found myself right there on Nyssa’s journey as she faced reunions, grief, betrayal and impossible challenges once more.
Woven throughout the story is Nyssa’s new but growing faith. I love how this book shows the real side of new faith and how it has ups and downs along the way, to include moments of courage and moments of questioning.
The story included twists and turns - a few surprises I had hoped for and a few I completely didn’t see coming. Though this book is aimed at the young adult crowd, I think it’s a great read for all ages. I can’t wait for the final installment of the series and look forward to having all three on my bookshelf for my own kids (and others) to enjoy one day!
It took me quite a while to actually sit down and read this book, but when I finally made the time, I wasn't disappointed. The book starts right where it left off, with Nyssa trying to figure out a way to fight with the members of Fortune's Fall. The book really rehashed everything for me pretty well so I wasn't confused about what happened right at the end of the first book, so that was nice. I also loved that Katherine Barger took the time to integrate faith and Christianity in her novel. There really isn't enough of that in books coming out these days, so it's refreshing to find an author who does it. (thank you)
This is a really enjoyable read and I definitely recommend it for anyone who likes dystopia. It's a very unique storyline with really cool characters.
Also *plot twists* SHHHH!!! (you didn't hear that from me)
The Exiled is well written; developing characters and painting the scene so you feel a part of it. It is hard to put down, you want to know what happens next; it is not predictable.
The courage, faith and perseverance of Nyssa is amazing. It challenges me to live more boldly.
Just like the first book in this series it is filled with action that keeps you turning the pages. I especially enjoy the journey to faith that Nyssa goes on, the doubts and fears that change to a surety in the face of dire threat is captivating.
I really hope the next installment is not too far behind!
I think this book hit all the right notes with its dystopian storyworld and high stakes. I enjoyed seeing the plot of FORTUNE'S FALL continue here in this book.
Nyssa is a great character-- felt super authentic as a teen to me-- and I really want to know what happens to her next. I liked that she sometimes stepped forward as a leader. Sometimes other characters overshadowed her a little bit, where they had the ideas or big moves, but in the end, Nyssa definitely held her own and made some really big choices herself. I'm really interested to see where the rest of the series goes.
Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my review. All opinions my own.
