The only thing worse than having your heart broken is going home and having nothing to show for it.
Which is exactly the situation Logan Hanson finds himself in. Worse than that, his hometown isn’t exactly glad to have him back. He’s jobless, friendless and things are looking pretty bleak… until his dad’s best friend, Ezra, throws him a lifeline.
Small town life has always suited Ezra Black just fine, but it hurts him to see Logan struggle to re-adjust. Ezra has always been an out and proud bisexual, but small town gossip about his best friend's son has him wondering if he’s as accepted as he thought.
Ezra offers Logan a job, hoping that the people of the town will get over themselves and see Logan for what he is, a young man who wants a chance to start over and fit in. The more time they spend together, the closer they grow, and all it takes is one kiss for everything between them to change.
Their relationship is new, but is it strong enough to overcome small town gossip, an angry friend, and father who doesn’t understand their love? All Ezra wants is for Logan to be his last first kiss, but can that be enough?
EM Denning has more than twenty romance novels under her belt and has become an author you can rely on to bring you emotionally endearing, soft and fuzzy, stories. She is well known among her friends for her love of naps and sarcasm. She spends her free time reading as many romance novels as she can get her hands on.
I had so many issues with this book but the aspect that bothered me the most was the issue of it being nearly impossible for me to remember who was who between Logan and Ezra. I was very much having my Keke Palmer moment. They could be walking across the street and I wouldn’t know a thing. Sorry to these men. But instead it was a whole book of that!!!!! They were so indistinguishable between each other. Not an interesting character trait to be found. Secondly, there was no real sense of time or place. Oh suddenly we’re at home. Weren’t we just at the grocery store? Did we teleport? Things just happened in this sort of non stop state where it felt like the book had a train to catch and had better things to do than fill the reader in on the happenings. Also…why did they even like each other? It felt like nothing happened and suddenly we’re in love! Yay! I love you, you love me!!! Okay. How did we get here?!?! Where! Was! The! Romantic! Connection!!!!!! I was looking for a great best friend’s dad or dad’s best friend romance and instead I got stilted dialogue, meh sex scenes and just a dull book overall. Well. At least I had a few laughs in the beginning!
This was right on the cusp of being everything I want and love. It’s like the story would veer in the right direction and then go off course at the last minute.
I liked Ezra, especially that he was around 50, I’m really into older men at the moment. He’s your typical stoic, yet affectionate cinnamon roll type of character.
It was mentioned at one point that Logan was a twink but he was no doubt the most boring, vanilla character imaginable.
The author managed to make construction work, mildly entertaining. It made for a good build up in their chemistry. The steam was hot, no doubt the best part of this story. But it wasn’t the best either.
The drama/angst was entertaining, now that I think about it, that was probably the best part. I think if there was more drama and sex it would’ve been an improvement.
Overall I believe it lacked much needed character building and more interesting dialogue. Don’t just go halfway, freaking shoot for the stars.
I enjoyed this May/December romance. I liked the characters and they had some very sweet moments. I feel like Logan still has some growing up to do. He is on the right path, and with Ezra's love and guidance he will hopefully discover more about himself. I feel as if this story is incomplete in some ways. Though I enjoyed this relationship, I wonder if Logan's self growth will eventually pull them apart.
I guess we will never know. I choose to believe their love will be an everlasting one, but with Erza constantly reminding everyone of how "old" he is and Logan's self doubt I wonder if I am being a Pollyanna and hoping for something that doomed to eventually break apart in the end.
Logan, after a bad breakup in California, is forced to go his hometown where he knows he's not welcome by anybody, including his bastard father. Unfortunately, he has no choice. He has no job, no place to live, and no money to go anywhere else. Not surprisingly, when he arrives, his dad handles it exactly the way Logan knew he would.
I really didn't like his dad, Jon.
Ezra is Jon's long-time best friend. He knows better than most how hot headed Jon can be, especially with his son. So Ezra jumps in and helps Logan out, even offering him a job because nobody else would hire him. Their working together brings them close, and not as worker and boss. They both want each other, but they're also both falling head over heels in love with each other.
I really enjoyed pretty much the entire book. There are two reasons why it got 4.5 stars instead of 5. One, it desperately needed an epilogue. The way it ended felt somewhat unfinished, though the reader knows Logan and Ezra get their HEA. The second thing is something Logan's ex did. It was pretty unrealistic. Otherwise, a fantastic book.
The book was enjoyable, but I did have a bit of a hard time connecting with the characters. I simply wasn’t very invested. That might be my own fault, who knows.
I’m a huge fan of age gaps, but this one was very large (24 and 50, I think), which, together with the lack of connection with the characters, made it feel a little uncomfortable in the beginning. It definitely improved eventually and I was happy with them ending up together.
This book didn’t have an epilogue, which might be my biggest pet peeve ever. Just let me see them happy and in love for a couple of pages. It would honestly have helped the story a ton, for me atleast.
The first and the last kiss are special. The ones in between are all important. But it is the true love that glues the kisses and the relationship together, regardless of who they are to each other.
Parental kisses start off very loving, but as a child ages, the kisses change as the relationship matures into family love. It is mostly expressed by actions and words. Gifts reinforce the love.
Other family kisses also change with time and age. Sex differences are a big influence, too. Boy-boy kisses and any showing of love are shunned by their parents as siblings are trained to be tough fighters that never cry or love other boys. Brotherly love is often expressed in fighting as all other options are discouraged.
Girl-girl expressions are much more tolerated as they are taught cooking, cleaning, and child raising skills while the brothers are out playing sports.
Boy-girl and girl-boy relationships in the family are supposed to follow the parental pattern. But most families now days are blended and broken by death, divorce, and disappearing parents. Older siblings and grandparents are more common as the family members raising the kids. The kids are more on their own to learn how to me adults, but are missing most of the lessons needed.
Most families are short on money and opportunities to succeed. The small town kids try to get away as soon as possible. The broken families just keep falling apart more.
But that does not mean that exceptions do not happen. A prodigal son can return home when life goes bad. If the parents are survivors, they may be able to help, but can often destroy the children and friends in the battles for dominance and control.
It still takes a community to raise kids, even if many in the community try to mess up anything good while gossiping about the bad that they do to the poor kid.
Yet somehow, a true friend can make a big difference to the kid. It may not be the normal match to expectations, but if it works for them, who is to say that their love is wrong? Hollywood reporters? Nosy neighbors? Parents? Friends? Family?
You can tell when it is right as the community circles the wagons to defend their own from the ugly world.
Last First Kiss is a sweet and sexy “best friend’s son” story with a big age gap element. It starts as sort of a slow burn, setting the stage with Logan’s breakup, return home, and attempts to settle into town. It seems most folks don’t really like him (for reasons I am not fully clear about) and so people are rejecting him right and left when he applies for jobs. Combined with his pain over Clark’s betrayal and the rocky way things went with his dad, and Logan is definitely having a rough go of it. Ezra ends up coming in as this sexy, kind man who offers a helping hand. He is there for Logan’s father, Jon, offering a listening ear and some tough love about Jon’s attitude. But to Logan’s surprise, Ezra is there for him too, offering a job, a place to stay, and a listening ear.
Much of the early part of the book has the men mostly noticing and appreciating one another, but not acting on it. But once they finally let go, Logan and Ezra definitely don’t hold back and they are steamy together, but with a nice sweetness as well.
This started out so strong but then kind of fizzled.
There’s no way a narcissist like Clark would have done what he did later on in the book. It made no sense.
Ezra and Logan had chemistry but there wasn’t much to their relationship. Logan’s dad was a jerk almost the whole book too. Not sure why Ezra was even friends with him much less best friends. Ugh
It ended with a HFN which was satisfying but the over all plot was a bit convoluted unfortunately.
I enjoyed Logan and Ezra’s story. Ezra was the only one who offered Logan some sanctuary and understanding when he came home after the drama of LA. Ezra gained so much by giving Logan a chance and Logan was able to see that he is capable when he didn’t feel that way.
3.75 stars. Age gap is my jam. I enjoyed this story. It's great to read once. I loved Ezra, he was such as protective teddy bear. Logan I didn't connect with as much. I liked him but mostly it was in connection with Ezra, how Ezra took care of him or the banter they had. I didn't find anything wrong with the story, nothing annoyed me. I just didn't connect with the story and Logan in a way that made me jump out of my seat.
Disclaimer: I received an electronic ARC of this book from the author.
This book is one of those stories that is exactly what it says on the tin, and absolutely nothing about that is bad. Denning is deft enough at characterization that Logan and Ezra are more than walking stereotypes of young twink and jaded, older bachelor. Instead, Ezra is so laid back that he might as well be horizontal, but he still contains a strong core of knowing what he wants (and doesn’t want) out of life, and he refuses to play the “what if?” game once he decides to reach for something. In the same (and by same, I also mean completely different) vein, Logan might seem like an overdramatic kid on the surface, but he’s mature enough to handle the problems he’s dealt in the best way he knows how—and also recognize when repetitive aspects of his life might prove problematic.
Some elements of this storyline were rather predictable, but in that low-angst way that made this book a cozy, familiar sort of read that you can sink into and enjoy for exactly the love story it is. Denning does flip the script in certain ways by making the father-son dynamic between Logan and his father (Ezra’s bestie) a source of conflict separate from the “dating dad’s best friend” trope. Ultimately, I appreciated that all of the various conflicts in the finale of this book were handled with mature communication rather than histrionics (despite one secondary character’s best efforts).
This solid book works as a stand-alone. Still, I can’t help but want to be a fly on the wall for later interactions between all of these characters as Logan and his dad develop a more mature relationship, and Logan and Ezra live happily ever after. I kind of want to hug both of these guys, and finishing this book left a giant smile on my face. I highly recommend it to readers interested in a fresh take on this particular trope, those looking for excellent bisexual representation in queer romance, and anyone searching for a particularly cozy read as the weather gets colder.
I received an ARC of Last First Kiss from the author and for a very short while and at the beginning I wasn't sure if it was the book for me. Once I started reading, however, things improved very quickly. This is a May December romance and involves a young man with his father's best friend. Logan appears a bit flighty and it seems that he tends to take off at the sign of trouble but things change after he leaves LA and returns to the father he does not know well. He is also returning to a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business. Logan was the secret lover of a well-known actor and, when that lover married his co-star, Logan decided that it was time for him to leave. The book was well written and I read it this morning, so it is a quick read. Once I settled into the story I was happy to keep going. I wanted to know how we were going to get to our HEA. Logan and Ezra are well suited and I liked seeing them together. Ezra is also the person who Logan needs in his life. There are some very hot sex scenes in the book and these really add to our understanding of this couple. Recommended.
I love a good story featuring an older, mature, manly sexy guy 😍 those are definitely the best ones. I loved Ezra, he was definitely the star for me. I know the story was mainly about Logan finding himself and love and stuff, but honestly I still think Logan is quite immature. While I don't doubt his relationship with Ezra is deep and meaningful, I also didn't feel a lot of passion or true connection, it felt mostly like this huge need to feel safe and seen and cared for, and he obviously jumped in with both feet. I want to think that eventually, as things settled more for him staying in town and all, his reasons changed and they stayed in love and HEA. But as I read it right now, at least from Logan's side, feels more like need, dependency and safety than true love 🤷🏻♂️ I also really liked Jon's change of pace, he was kind of a shitty dad at first, a little understandable with the circumstances of his sudden fatherhood, but still, he was a dick. Glad that he understood and made the effort to change. A lovely story nonetheless 🖤
I received a copy of this book from the author, and this is my honest review. Wow, Ezra and Logan are a very nice couple. What I liked of this book: Their cuteness, the protective side of Ezra, what Logan thinks about Ezra - "It's impossible to miss the light of someone who was a ten watt bulb when Logan was standing in next to the sun" - and how he feels about him - "Logan felt like a flower who wanted nothing more than to soak up the sunshine Ezra offered him". The way he react when Clark shows up at the cabin. The fact that Ez and Lo don't have penetrative sex till the end of the book. Like that was not the main course of their phisical interaction. Isn't always like this, and I really appreciated it. Things I don't like about this book: non existent. You have to read it!😉

I had little knowledge of the type of story this was when I started. I was a tad confused as to who the MCs were and assumed one trope when, in fact it was a different one. TOTALLY MY FAULT! The story went an entirely different direction and I am thrilled it did!
*****POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD ***** Clark was an A-hole and I was soooo glad when Logan left him. I was a bit sad at the way Jon saw his son but, I’m glad Ezra chastised him for it. I was a tad disappointed that we didn’t discover what was in the e-mail.
***** End spoilers*****
Logan and Ezra’s story was well written and steamy. It was a fast and very enjoyable read.
* gained for: "The book caught my interest in the first five pages."
* gained for: "I thought about the book when I was forced to set it down and re-enter society."
1/2 * gained for: "There were no info dumps, poor writing, or copy edit mistakes that jerked me out of the story." There were a handful of copy edit mistakes. Nothing major, (words written twice in a row) but each one pulled me out of the story.
The novel failed to gain stars for this item:
NO STAR gained for: "I was sad when the book ended. I wanted more!"
NO STAR gained for: "That's it. I'm hooked on this author. I will automatically try anything she/he/they writes."
Phenomenal! Logan finds himself in a terrible situation, so he comes home only to have his dad be kind of a jerk to him. Ezra is his dad’s best friend and decides to help Logan, gives him a job. This story has all my favorite troupes in it! Last First Kiss hooked me from the beginning and did not let go!! It left me with a smile on my face for days. I absolutely loved it!! Overall the story was really well written, highly recommend! I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
It was a sweet book a little short but never the less sweet. My only issue is there really wasn’t a conflict of interest during the middle or towards the end of the book. Then I found the intimacy scene weird like it was talked twice about whether to use protection or not, like Ezra made some kind of promise to himself that we have no background story on. It’s like the book hyped you up on that only to have the ending of it not be what you thought so that was disappointing. The romance level was ok it wasn’t crazy, explosive, nor consuming.
This was super good! I love a good age gap and this hit all the right marks for me~!
I loved the build up for Logan and Ezra. It helped that they kind of knew each other before hand or this would have felt super insta-love, although I typically don't have problems with that.
I wanted to punch Clark! The jerk!
I wasn't the biggest fan of Logan's dad. He somewhat redeemed himself, but not 100%. I'd be interested to see if anything comes of any of the side characters, but this was great as a standalone too!
As a small town boy that moved to nyc and back to small town life I really felt a kindred spirit with Logan. E.M. Did an amazing job at portraying small town life and the romance between Ezra and Logan. There is no huge fight or resolution in this book but sometimes what you need is just a good ole fashion love story to make your heart happy. I could see a Few different spin off opportunities here with both m/m and m/f couples (I don’t know if she writes the later) but there are a couple Characters I could see a late gay for you type story.
I haven’t had a lot of luck finding stories with this trope. It’s usually best friend’s dad. And I love the dynamic of the way they come together. Ezra took good care of Logan and there wasn’t a lot of angst or that last minute conflict that seems to penetrate romances. Was a great KU find and if I want to read it again I’ll probably buy it outright.
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes age gap or dad‘s best friend romances.
I did think it ended a little bit abruptly. Seems like it was missing an epilogue.
I noticed quite a few typos, minor ones like repetitive words or words in the wrong order. But nothing that took away from my overall enjoyment of the story.
Overall, it was hot and the characters were well developed.
I really enjoyed this tale, I always like age gap romances and also having a slim young man with a huge muscled man adds to the appeal, just gorgeous. I really do believe Clark loved Logan, he just wanted things his way too much and then couldn't let go. One thing though, I found it a bit of a stretch that a kind and level headed man like Ezra was best friends with a bad tempered and judgemental man like Jon. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable read.
That’s what I love about fathers best friend stories. I want the anguish, but I also love when the MCs stand up to the people against them. I love that E acted his age and wasn’t an oversized kid. I love the love and not too much questioning between the two. The writing was good, the smexy was yummy, and the side characters, here me out I would not be apposed to a Carter story. I think he can redeem himself.
Picked this book up on a recommendation. Surprised by his closeted BF getting hitched, Logan heads home to a lukewarm welcome. Thankfully, his Dad's best friend, Ezra, sees a need and fills it... completely. Some random errors pulled me from the story, and repetition of worries dragged on the storyline, but overall I enjoyed this May-December romance.
KU, contemporary, older-younger, "daddy" feels, construction
Logan returns home after finding out his secret lover married a woman and didn't tell him he was doing that. He tries to get a job but no one will hire him. Except his dad's best friend, Ezra. The two of them finally give into their mutual attraction. This story was about finding yourself, finding love and accepting help when needed. I liked the interactions between the characters.
