This is the first book in the Nina Brown Paranormal Cozy Mystery series. In this one, Nina is called on to take her bosses place judging a culinary competition in Aix-en-Provence, France. It’s the chance of a lifetime and could make Nina’s career. But problems abound, from falling for the handsome local competitor to several murder attempts on one of the other judges. Over the course of a weekend, Nina must identify the murderer before the wrong man is accused or she catches the attention of the killer.

There are things to like about this book. It’s cute. Light, fluffy and fun. The pacing is quick and Jasper the French bulldog is a standout character. The story relied heavily on the trope of an ingenue put into a position that she’s not remotely prepared for, and while it’s a trope for a reason, it works for the set up here.

Unfortunately, I had more minuses with this story than I did pluses. Aside from loving cozy mysteries, the paranormal aspect hooked me. Unfortunately, Nina’s abilities went from being barely fleshed out to being one thing too many packed into this book. There was, of course, a mystery (which was easily solved and inexplicably everyone, from the maitre’d to the police inspector, seemed to be compelled to discuss the case with Nina, even though she wasn’t really involved in it), a romance (with the love interest falling for her for no rational reason - despite it being against every contest protocol), and the paranormal spin, which was lumped in somewhat awkwardly. Lastly, I’m 99.9% sure the author has never been to Aix-en-Provence. It would have been better for her to make up a village to set this story in rather than try to make Aix fit the cozy mystery village vibe. I can assure you, Aix isn’t a “small village” with no taxi service. It’s possible the author assumes none of her readers have been there and wouldn’t know the difference.

I think this is yet another book where I’m not in the right age cohort to enjoy it. But plenty of people loved it, based on the number of positive reviews it has received. If you want to check it out, it’s on Kindle Unlimited so you’re not out any money if you feel the same as I do. Or maybe you’ll love it and have a new cozy mystery series to follow, which is never a bad thing.

Thank you to BookSirens for providing the ARC of this book. I’ve left my review honestly and voluntarily.

What could be better than a dog with style and a nose for detective work? Not a lot, in my opinion! This was a cute, fast read with entertaining characters and a lovable dog who really steals the show!

When Nina is sent to Provence in place of her boss to judge an important culinary competition for the magazine she works, she brings along her best friend, Holly and Holly’s fashionista pooch, Jasper, a French Bulldog.

From the very first competition, it seems that somebody is out to sabotage either the competition or one of the actual judges. One particular judge seems to be a target. The target of what exactly is the question.

Leave it to the newest judge on the panel, her stylish best friend and the best dressed canine to find the answers.

Poisoned in Provence has all my favorite elements of a fun mystery! French countryside, French cuisine and a French bulldog. Nina gets to take her boss’ place as a judge in a French cooking contest in Provence, France. She meets the charming chef Jacques, who takes her on a tour and shares his family’s story. What could go wrong? Lots! Secrets emerge and strange things happen to sabotage the competition and Nina’s new friend. Can she solve the mystery and redeem him? Make yourself a café au lait, a croissant and cozy up to read it to find out!

Main character not convincing as a culinary judge - doesn't know of belladonna. As a mystery reader, I do know what belladonna is and would assume other readers of this genre would as well. The author has given us a pleasant young woman who has some background, but doesn't seem very bright. Why wouldn't she know that fraternizing with the contestants before the judging would be unethical? And, why would she make bad choices anyway? Just not satisfying.

Cat Green cooks up a fun cozy mystery with Poisoned in Provence! While covering a cooking competition in gorgeous Provence France, Nina Brown gets wrapped up in a murder plot. Now she must uncover the culprit with the help of some unlikely allies. Green really brought Nina and the world to life through her gorgeous upbeat writing style, and I found myself smiling numerous times as Nina worked the case! But just because it was cozy didn’t mean it wasn’t compelling. Poisoned in Provence packed some genuine curve balls leading to a delightful surprise reveal. If you love cozy mysteries, France, or even cooking shows, definitely come figure out who was Poisoned in Provence!

This was a delightful cozy mystery. Nina Brown, the main character, her friend Holly, and their French Bulldog Jasper are in Provence, Franch for an assignment Nina is on. Her boss has broken her leg and has send Nina in her place to judge a competition for their magazine. Despite this being a business trip for Nina, she still manages to appreciate the beauty of the area, as well as a handsome local named Jacque who owns a restaurant nearby, and is the guardian of his little sister Clementine after their parents died. Things seem to be going well, until a series of mishaps, seemingly targeting Bateman, one of the judges, occur. Are they all just bad coincidences, or does someone have it in for Mr. Bateman? Read the book and find out!

When I purchased this book shortly after its release, it was in the “cozy animal mystery” genre of Amazon. Now, the book has been moved to “occult horror”. I cannot understand how it could be in either of these categories. It is a short read and a mystery. The only paranormal activities that I found were the heroine’s ‘gift’ of premonition and the use of herbs by a restauranteur’s family. Not exactly horror?

While “Poisoned in Provence” has many interesting chapters, I was disappointed that it was not as “cozy” as I had hoped. There is a very descriptive explanation of the decapitation of a monkey and the appropriate method of eating its brains. Later, in the ebook there is a vivid decapitation of a snake and its skinning to make soup.

For the most part the ebook is well written but there are some sequencing problems. Chef Jacques is doing a demonstration in a schoolroom of how to make a cake. He adds raw eggs to make a mixture. Then, an older couple enters the class. He is interrupted but then cuts the cake and hands out pieces to the school children. Without an further explanation, it seems that the children are getting raw eggs and a gooey mess which couldn’t be cut into pieces. Another sequencing problem occurs when the main character, Nina, is speaking with the hotel manager, Maurice. At this point Chef Jacques is at the police station but all of a sudden the Chef excuses himself to help a hotel guest.

The characters were enjoyable. Holly and dandy doggie,Jasper, become the unexpected focus of the book. Holly’s comments are amusing and her actions made me smile. She’s a flirt. She’s outspoken. She’s out to enjoy the trip. Holly is a fashion designer, not haute but canine couture. Jasper is the object of her attention, as she dresses him in the latest costumes on a daily basis. This doggie is petted and pampered by most of the characters. It’s not a surprise that the mystery is about to be solved when Jasper insists upon wearing his Sherlock Holmes garb, complete with magnifying glass. Holly and Jasper “steal the show”.

This was an enjoyable quick read, but it wasn't quite what I thought what I was going into based on the synopsis. We dive into a lot of set up for the characters and answering a ton of questions like: What is Nina doing here? Who was the cutie that picked us up from the airport? Why is that judge an ass? Set up is very important, so I commend the author for achieving this nicely. I was always getting my answers pretty quickly in the story if something new popped up. However, it isn't till WAY into the story do we get an inkling of this being anything but a getaway in France for two friends and a dog. Less mystery and more of a great vacation/getaway book.

I would have loved to follow Nina while she does all kinds of sleuthing while in France during the after hours of the cooking competition. But the detective work really wasn't a forefront of this story. And seeing Nina and Jacque to get some more time together would have been great! I was kind of expecting it to be far more than what showed up. Their spark together was super sweet and could have been a huge part. Could have allowed Nina's self-revelation to be more flushed out and less abruptly thrust upon us. Love that she sees a positive connection, but giving the lady a bit more time to come to terms with it would have been a bit more believable.

Something that bothered me was how quickly the entire mystery was solved. Nina seemed to have no idea about who could be the culprit in the attempted murders. There were moments she showed an interest in figuring it out, so she asked a question here or there. The ideas would start to build up for her which was exciting. But then when she attempts to work the problem out, Nina almost seemed like she'd rather just focus on other things like her job while there. - Kudos for staying focused girl! - And then, at the very last second something is discovered which solves the entire thing. This discovery snaps everything place for Nina and the whole thing is solved. Bam Done! A bit anticlimactic and a rushed solution.

I really like Holly and Jasper! These two stole the show in my opinion. Holly is hilarious! She is where the quote on this review actually comes from. She is a woman who absolutely dances to the beat of her own drum and I love it! Holly is a friend that I think everyone should have. They will always encourage you to do what you desire. They are also the one that will help get you into trouble and be right next to you the whole time. Plus, she is constantly making new doggie clothes for Jasper. You never know what new little outfit that cutie is going to be in! Jasper was one talkative pup too. He definitely wants all the attention, especially while showing off his adorable doggie outfits! Just saying the last one is he's in is perfect!

It was a good story and one that I am very happy that I was given a chance to read an ARC. I think this series has potential to grow into a great world and storyline. The abilities that Nina has could propel her into a lot of interesting situations. And of course I would love to keep up with Holly and The Jasp! But I don't know if the rest of the series is for me.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for a voluntary honest review.

Poisoned in Provence is the first book in the Nina Brown Paranormal Cozy Mystery series. We arrive, with Nina, in Provence, France when she is asked to fill in for her boss as a judge at a weekend-long culinary competition. As a foodie and writer for the Food! Travel! Wine! Magazine, Nina is excited to experience Provence and be a competition judge for the first time. Nina also has her best friend, (and roommate) Holly, as well as their sweet French Bulldog, Jasper, along with her on the trip. At the airport, they meet their handsome driver, Jacques, who they later learn has entered his best dessert in the weekend competition.

Even though the judges should not be socializing with the contestants, they feel drawn to one another, so Jacques and Nina find ways to share a few secret moments throughout the weekend. Nina finds that both of their families have been thought of as witches in the past due to her intuition and his family's use of special herbs. As she learns about his restaurant and family history, including a glimpse at their secret herb garden, she gets the idea to write an article about the area in addition to being a judge in the competition.

This is not the typical Cozy Mystery in the sense that it was not a murder mystery. The mystery in this story centered around the attempted murder of Bates Bateman, who is one of the other two judges for the contest. I found this book to be fun and well-written with the exception of a few minor details. I adored the characters of Nina, Holly and of course the cute and pampered pup, Jasper. I loved the addition of Holly's business of canine fashion and descriptions of the adorable outfits that she created for Jasper during their visit to Provence. All in all, I really enjoyed this story and found it full of charm, mystery and even romance.. I am definitely looking forward to continuing with the series soon!

*Many thanks to the author and BookSirens for the opportunity to read and review this eARC of Poisoned in Provence.

This was a light, quick read. I finished it in about 2 or 3 days, reading casually when I could. I thought Jasper was a cute character and I loved imagining him in his fashionista outfits.

*note - spoilerish comments ahead*

As for the writing style, I found it difficult to enjoy. There were wayyy too many descriptions about how everything smelled! It was very strange and didn't seem to add anything to the story. The interactions between the characters were choppy and forced. The timeline was difficult to understand. Also, most of the plot points were painfully unbelievable. Multiple crimes happening in a row, and no one bats an eye? Why is everyone talking to this editor's assistant about the investigation? What even is this cooking competition? One contestant has to cook the food in front of everyone while another makes it ahead of time and just puts it on a plate for his presentation? Handsome famous local chef decides to pick up one of the judges from the airport and immediately falls in love with her? Random couple steals a child from her blood family? WTF???

Plus there were some editorial errors that made the pacing and execution of the story confusing. Once, they substituted the name Jacques for the hotel manager, Maurice.

And the ending was such dumb luck. An entire police department just convicts someone because they were near the action, but does LITERALLY NO other investigation? But random editor's assistant from America solves the crime in 10 seconds and they just, believe her!! Again, with NO investigation. Whew, I just can't.

Unfortunately the writing style was filled with so many unnecessary adjectives, which was the first thing that really threw my off. It came across as forced and wannabe funny and easy-going, but it did not succeed. The storyline also didn't feel cohesive, supposedly the main plot point was the cooking show in which Nina participated as a judge, but i neither understood when it took place during the day, nor how it was structured. Also I did not understand where the story took place either. It was said that it's taking place in Aix-en-provence-which is not a small city-but then there were passages in the book where one was talking about a village? Also, the majority of people of all ages being able to speak english is not realistic at all. We're talking about France here. Little 9 y/o do not speak english fluently unless they've been in a private international school or were raised bilingual. The Characters interacting or rather their relations did not make sense either. Too close too fast and no real build up. The way the supernatural element was brought into the story did not make sense either. Overall, the story definitely has potential, but the author needs to find her natural writing style and a good editor.

Poisoned in Provence by Cat Green is the first book in the Nina Brown Paranormal Cozy Mystery series. Nina Brown is a young, eager, food journalist who is trying to make a name for herself and prove to her boss, Ruth Ross, that she can do more than just get coffee and answer phones. So when the opportunity to travel to Provence, France to judge a food competition arises, she jumps at the chance. She also brings her best friend, Holly, and their adorable French bulldog, Jasper, for the weekend long extravaganza. During this incredible trip, she meets Jacques, a young, talented chef, and takes an instant liking to him.

Everything is running smoothly until the world renowned chef, Bates Bateman, who is also judging the competition, claims to have been poisoned after the first presentation. Nina has to find out who is trying to harm Mr. Bateman before something worse happens to him.

This was a great story. I liked Nina from the get go. I liked her budding friendship with Jacques, and the mysteries surrounding their individual pasts. The mystery of who was trying to hurt Bates Bateman was intriguing and it had me on the edge of my seat as well. I can't wait to to see where Nina, Holly, and Jasper go in the next book!

I would like to thank the author and BookSirens for the opportunity to read and review the eARC of Poisoned in Provence.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Poisoned in Provence by Cat Green had an interesting premise, but it wasn't for me.

Nina Brown goes to France to help judge a cooking contest for the food magazine she works for. The problem is that one of her fellow judges keeps getting poisoned during every contestant's time to cook.

And honestly, that's about it. This book is less than 200 pages, and nothing happens until the final three chapters. There's little investigation throughout until then. At that point, the protagonist finds one clue while speaking to one person and instantly solves the case. I kept reading because I thought something must happen soon, but it never did.

I will say that the author's writing was well-done and easy to read. However, I wish I could have followed the mystery more to attempt to solve it with the main character. Speaking of the characters, they were well-done, too. While they weren't developed well by the end of the book, they were written well and were fun to follow around.

Overall, this was an okay read for me. However, I'm unsure if I'll pick up the other books in the series.

Considering this book is the first in the serie, I really wanted to like it because then I may have a whole new serie of cosy mysteries to enjoy. But I was kinda disappointed with this one. Sometimes the first book can be better than the rest of the serie, but hopefully this will be the other way round. Wait and see !

One complaint I have is related to some inconsistencies, for example a black dress that is in fact green, a french doctor speaking english to a Frenchman or the situation with Jaques' sister. Then there are some french customs which I really don't identify with. A native of Alsace, I'm not sure about people in Provence but I'm French and found some assertions clichés.

Surprinsingly I had no problem with the dog. Even though I doubt I'll ever see a dog behaving like that, I loved Jasper, a.k.a. The Jasp ; he's cute and fun.

I also liked the author's style, easy to read and enjoyable.

Thus, I will try to read the second volume and would recommend this book to readers of cosy mysteries.

My review for poisoned in Provence by cat green

The Story was great. A great story set in France. Nina and Holly are at a culinary/cooking contest with their cute dog Jasper. Nina is writing about the contest when a lot of stuff happens from poisoning to lies and deceit. They both try to unravel what is going on.. I also love Jasper the dog. He seems so cute. oh Jasper in doggie pajamas sounds cute. Judge Bates Bateman always seems to get ill from the food but no one else is odd. All of the characters were amazing. They had depth and personality. So many strange things happened in this story. Overall it was a great whodunit with a lot of twists and turns along the way. My favorite characters are Nina, Holly, Jacques and Jasper the dog. I do not like Feng lung and his weird food like monkey brains. Nina and Jacques are so cute together and seemed to like each other. I love how it leaves you hanging on what their next adventure is going to be. It keeps you guessing what is next. I would recommend this book to my friends and family LAURA8759.

Nina Brown, assistant to the editor at Food! Travel! Wine! Magazine, has the opportunity to go to Provence to judge the Epicurean Delight competition when her boss breaks her leg. She takes her roommate Holly and their French bulldog Jasper (who has the best fashion sense) along with her. They meet each of the contestants (most of them very friendly) and the judges (overly snobby). Bates Bateman, one of the judges, has issues with each of the dishes prepared, causing him to rush himself or be rushed to the hospital, the last incident very serious in nature. Nina, an amateur sleuth, works her way through the case as she tries to keep Jacques (the local Provence competitor) from being accused of something he didn’t do, or did he? All is fair in love and food. The characters in this book were lovely, and there were so many laugh out loud moments. Kudos to Cat Green, this book was so well done, I really thought I was in Provence with Nina and Holly.

I was offered an advance reader copy of this book, however I had previously purchased it and read it that way.

In France, covering for her boss (an editor for a lifestyle magazine), Nina Brown is set to judge a cooking competition between two top chefs and the local favourite. When one of the other judges is targeted in a poison attack, Nina goes to work to prove the village chef is innocent.

While the story was pleasant, some things set my teeth on edge. Firstly, Nina was well aware that a romance between a judge and a competitor was ill-advised, yet she dallied with the local chef daily. Secondly, the France envisioned by the author is so Americanized that they might as well have been in Peoria as Aix. Thirdly, both Nina and her friend Holly catered to the dog as though he were royalty - while there's nothing wrong with adoring your pet, the girls took it to an overly sentimental level with his costumes. Fourthly, the mystery was so limited in its coverage that it barely registered as a puzzle before it was solved.

Poisoned in Provence is a sweet cosy. Though it failed to resonate with me, the story is quite readable.

Such a delightful book! First off, I love the cover. I know it's a murder mystery, but the cover is so colorful and fun.

The cast of characters are wonderful. The author really brings them to life. I was intrigued by everyone's back story just as much as Nina, the main character, was. I definitely felt the charm of this Parisian town. I have to say, tho, Jasper, is one of my favorite characters. The little French Bulldog has such personality.

As for the storyline, itself, I was hooked from page one. This was a hard book to put down. The poisoning is not the main focus of the 1st part of the book, but for me, that didn't matter. Meeting all of the characters, learning about the town, following the drama of the food tasting, and finding out about Nina's powers, all made for a very compelling story.

I 100% recommend this book to anyone who likes romance & cozy mysteries.

Culinary chaos!

This is the chance of a lifetime for Nina; filling in for her boss as a culinary competition judge in Provence France. If she writes the perfect article for Food! Travel! Wine! Magazine then she may finally get a promotion with a raise large enough to pay for her ailing mother’s care. She is accompanied by her friend Holly and Holly's French Bulldog Jasper. It is shaping up to be an excellent experience complete with a dreamy French chef until one of the judges is poisoned.

This is a fun cozy mystery with well-rounded characters, some twists, a little romance, and a good plot. It is the first book I have read by this author but I will be putting more books in this series on my TBR list.

A very easy read for the first in this series. Nina Brown sets off to Provence with best friend Holly, and their dog, Jasper, as a stand-in judge for her boss in a competition for best chef. But it seems as though someone out to harm one of the other judges.

Nina is stifling her natural paranormal talents, which don’t particularly play much of a part in this opener. I would like to have seen more of this but hopefully it will come in the next few books. I liked the French bulldog, Jasper, despite all the changes of clothing for him. There were a couple of cliched characters, like Bates and Adonis but they did make good reading. A cozy mystery, worth a read.

Poisoned in Provence is the first book in the A Nina Brown Paranormal Cozy Mystery series, written by Cat Green and in which the protagonist, Nina Brown is sent by the Travel! Food! Wine! magazine to Provence to cover a culinary contest. She is accompanied by her lifelong friend Holly and their dog Jasper.
It has been a pleasant surprise to discover that Nina has certain paranormal abilities, which help her discover who is behind the assassination attempts.
The book could be classified as a cozy romantic mystery, since as the story progresses, sparks begin to arise between Nina and Jacques, one of the three chefs competing in the event.
Poisoned in Provence is a clean story, suitable for having a good time reading Nina's adventures.
I thank the author and BookSirens for the opportunity to read this book.
The opinion I have expressed above is based solely on what I think and feel about this book.

Poisoned in Provence is my second Cat Green read. I was not as excited about the beginning of this one. The dialog felt a little stilted and contrived at first. However, I persevered and was glad I did. The dialog smoothed out and the antics of the characters make for a delightful story. I was disappointed to not see Pyewacket in this adventure. I think she and Jasper would make a great duo! We do get a deeper look into Nina’s background, whetting the appetite for more. I’d like to see what comes next.

Poisoned in Provence is exactly what I was in the mood to read. The first book in a series, here we meet Nina, a young woman working for a lifestyle magazine. She travels to France to judge a cooking competition, accompanied by her best friend Holly and their very stylish dog, Jasper. This book has everything I wanted: attempted murder! Cute dudes! Dog costumes! Visions!

While I was reading it, I kept thinking “I want this series to be turned into made for tv Hallmark channel movies. I would watch the shit out of that.” Poisoned in Provence was such a fun little escape and I will be reading the next book immediately.

Poisoned in Provence is book #1 in the Nina Brown Paranormal Cozy Mystery series by Cat Green.

Nina is filling in for her boss as a cooking competition judge at a contest their magazine is sponsoring in Provence, France. Her friend and roommate Holly travels along with their dog, Jasper.

This is a quick, fun read. I like Nina and Holly, but Jasper, with his fabulous wardrobe, is the star. I guessed pretty quickly who the victim and guilty party were, but it didn’t keep me from enjoying the story.

This is an interesting and entertaining mystery. I flip flopped between possible suspects. Everyone looked guilty to me. Lol. I am completely enamored with Jasper the doggie fashionesta. Besides absolute cuteness, his outfits sounded "to die for", making him extra cute. Jacques' sister Clementine is very sweet and polite to a 'T'.

I adored both characters, and I feel in love with them. Great creative additions to the story. I liked the twists and turns, and what an ending!! I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion. Looking forward to more.

A very charming cozy travel mystery. Nina was a judge for a cooking competition in Provence, and the setting was very well-established. I felt like I could sit down and order a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and relax with the beautiful scenery. The characters were also nicely fleshed out and distinct. The mystery was logical and I did not predict the reveal but found it very satisfying. I didn't love the little doggie and his clothing situation quite as much, but it didn't take anything away from the story, either. I will definitely be continuing the series. Poisoned in Province is Book 2 in A Nina Brown Paranormal Mystery by Cat Green. I enjoyed this story. I felt that Nina, Holly and their French bulldog, Jasper, were great characters. Nina is judging a culinary competition in the South of France. Everything was going great until one of the judges was poisoned. I thought that Cat Green built the story well giving clues to help me figure out who the murderer was. I am looking forward to reading Niba, Holly and Jasper's next adventure. Nina is the assistant editor for the lifestyle magazine, Travel! Food! Wine! She’s thrilled when her boss asks her to fill in as a judge for the prestigious culinary contest in Provence. She and her friend Holly, along with their bulldog Jasper, fly to France, and travel to the quaint town of Provence. But things get dicey when one of the judges claims he was poisoned! How could this be possible, even if he wasn’t well liked? I received a free copy of this fun cozy from BookSirens and write this review voluntarily.
