While the crew of the Scarlet Albatross struggles to survive her harrowing voyage, Gerard is busy keeping his promise to his father. He and Silveo return to Holovarus for a brief farewell visit. However, chaos is threatening to overwhelm the Great Islands, and even little Holovarus will not be spared. Gerard’s father and brother are facing difficult decisions, and they need help. Gerard feels torn between his old kingdom and his new family. The situation only grows more complicated when the crew of the Scarlet Albatross limps into port, bringing old enemies and a child Silveo didn’t know existed.

I loved this installation! My wish came true! There was a coming together of the crews, as well as the mending of fences, clarifications of misunderstandings, and righting of a few wrongs as everyone looked toward the future.
As of the writing of this review, however, I do not see an audio version of the final book in the series, The Cormorant. While I have read each book, having the accompanying audio has added an element of enjoyment (and speed) to the experience. I hope the audio becomes available soon!
* Note: The above is my review of the main story; however, as with the previous installments, 7 or 8 bonus stories are included in this book. So, I will be editing/updating this review to include my thoughts on them as I finish them. And I will rate the entire collection when I am done.
*More Bonus Stories*
Blockade Runner - Silas & Gus! Tight sailing between cliff and fog; the cliff almost won. Almost.
Queen in the Daylight - Elizabet (and Jaleel - sort of)! We learn how/why Elizabet met and agreed to marry into the Holovarus family.
Save Yourself - Mouse! This story occurs right after Alsair attacks him during his initial run-in with Silveo and company.
Play Date - Belvedere, Mouse, and Dakar! This story takes place about a month after the events of Jager Thunder. You can never have too many brothers (or sisters).
Say Please - Silas & Percy! This story occurs on the night that Jager Thunder ended. This is one of the most amusing romantic(?) scenes I have ever read!
Fly = Felbane! He is finally healed!
I don't know why I waited to read the bonus stories before rating the book. I think I knew as soon as I finished the main text that this would get five stars, and the bonus stories were just that, bonuses - they did not disappoint.
If possible, an even more thrilling follow-up to the The Scarlet Albatross. Now also featuring your favourite characters from the The Guild of the Cowry Catchers! You do not have to read Cowry Catchers before delving into Book 3 and 4 of this series, but it is highly recommended if you enjoy character development and worldbuilding.
Before this, I have ever heard an audiobook in which two different narrators handled the same characters, but they solved this one masterfully. I think both Rish Outfield and Lauren Harris did great in keeping the tone for familiar characters. Silveo’s husky sarcasm and Gerard’s earnestness carried over with new narrators. But they also must have collaborated on how to voice new characters, since these too were recognizable between them. Great job!
As I said in my review of The Scarlet Albatross: One of Abigail Hilton’s greatest strengths as a writer is how she weaves together several plotlines (that she ties up to my satisfaction) and keep her 20+ characters unique and believable throughout. This is especially apparent in Jager Thunder, which has an even larger cast of characters than perhaps any novel of hers to date.
I almost regret reading this before the series was finished. This one had so many unexpected twists and turns, that I can only imagine how the last book, The Cormorant, will wrap things up.
The short stories previously published in separate collections, have now been attached to the main novels of the series. Not only can Hilton write a mean novel, she is also highly skilled with short fiction! In fact, some of my favourite writing by the author is short fiction, so don't skip these.
Hilton dose a great job pulling together the casts of characters from the two books and those in the third book of this series. The politics are great. Lots of well done action, though the final night dose go on for many, many chapters, as the large cast is spread out doing a lot of different things. Still it's easy to follow along what each group is doing. And more budding m/m relationships, which is so rare in well written fantasy.
