The poetry in Outlier discovers in the margins of society the forgotten stories, those tales that lie outside traditional histories. Hildebrandt is a guide who takes the reader beyond the well-worn tracks of the official tour, into landscapes of word or earth that offer hints of where the real bones are buried.
A lot of my friends refer to this book but I wasn't really sure what it was all about, just that it was about people who did not fit the norm. So when I saw it in my library, I grabbed it. Much to my surprise, it's a stellar book. Extremely thought-provoking and insightful. It's about success. Yet it turns the usual ideas about success on their head. No one succeeds alone. There is no level playing field. Talent and hard work help some but are not the true key nor are they ever enough by themselves. If you have a child, this is a must-read. But I'd recommend it to anyone.
This is a very quick and easy read. Very intriguing perspective on success. Success is about what defines an individual as much as attempts made by an individual. It's all interrelated. I have previously read about the importance about habits and decisions lead to success. This book adds opportunity as yet another determinant of success, one that we have the least control over.
