Modern dating has left us all a little haunted, but singles Rachel and Dustin might just discover that love lurks in even the unlikeliest of places.
Every Halloween, True Virginia, the country’s oldest theme park, hires 500 actors to come plague their grounds and run their haunted houses. But this year, one actress goes missing on Halloween night, and her abductor leaves behind a series of chillingly graphic clues. Zombie Nurse Rachel and Zombie Hunter Dustin suddenly find themselves at the center of it all. Will they survive the night? Will their relationship?
Successful graphic designer Rachel wants nothing more than to be married. Having her own family is all she’s ever dreamed of, after growing up with an unavailable single mom. But the dating apps have done more harm than good in her love life and she’s pretty sure romance is dead. So when she signs up to play Zombie at True Virginia, she thinks it’ll be a good distraction from her six-foot-under love life. She definitely doesn’t want anything to do with hot Zombie Hunter, Dustin, who’s obviously a player.
It’s true, Dustin wants nothing more than a good time with some pretty girls. It’s been way too long since he got any tail - like maybe since his emotionally abusive ex broke it off a year ago. When Dustin and his best buddy Branson become extras at True Virginia, it seems like a great place for some easy hookups. But when Dustin meets hot Zombie Nurse Rachel, suddenly a quick and dirty Zombie hunt seem pointless.
But there's a love triangle brewing, and Dustin's early misadventures at True Virginia might just come back to haunt him and Rachel on Halloween night.
Somewhere between Hallmark movies and the SNL skits about Hallmark movies, there's my brain. Put your feet up and escape into my romantic comedies for a bit of play time. My strong female leads are adventurous and quirky, and the passionate men who fall for them are absolutely worth your (er, their) time.
Fast paced romance. It's something that can be read in between heavy stuff. Conceptually, it held a good starting line with the main characters on opposite sides of the spectrum- one avoiding dating while the other seeking an ever after.
Because it is fast paced, I felt like there were some missing pages to fully develop the characters into something with an ompf. Both fell in like at first sight and then felt relationship flutters on the first week. Less than a month, it evolved into a full blown need to be with each other. So while the background of each character was laid out perfectly on the first 3 chapters, the succeeding ones did not fully justify the ending.
Also, the last chapers got dark for a moment with the inclusion of an obsessed side boo. And while, I think, the intention is to showcase the lead cast into a more positive light, it did not do much on the story itself.
Overall, it serves its purpose as a novella, probably. Will be interesting to see sub plots on their story.

There are two sides to my review of Romance is Dead, the one side of me wants to absolutely rave about this book and tell everyone who wants a spooky Halloween read with some romance thrown in to pick it up! But I also feel there were things that let it down...
To start with, our characters, Rachel and Dustin, who were our two leads, were absolutely brilliant! They both brought so much fun and joy to the pages, they really seemed like people you would want to be friends with and work in a haunted house with. And the supporting characters, specifically the ones who played the other zombies were excellent. They all just meshed together really well to form a great bunch of characters, especially two you couldn't help but root for.
The atmosphere of the book was really good too, I think because it was set in a scare house/maze style it could have been hard to get that tense and creepy atmosphere at points but the author did really well!
And the story was really good, I loved it! As a horror and Halloween lover this book had the perfect balance of things to make it a fun Halloween read.
However, I did think it was a little bizarre with the whole missing person vibe towards the end and the writing was just OK. It wasn't terrible but there were points that the dialogue felt a little clunky, and a little awkward.
Otherwise, this was a really entertaining, fun Halloween read and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a bit of romance with their horror! It was well worth the read and something I plan to read again next Halloween.
A delightful romantic comedy with a clever backdrop perfectly suited for a slightly spooky theme throughout. The protagonists are all relatable and the setting for the story described vividly. I really enjoyed the read.
It was a mix of gothic and romance genre, the author did it again. Undeniable chemistry between characters, spark, passion and there was everything, element of mystery, understanding, character’s growing fondness and at the end settling for what you truly want. Love that fulfil us
As a haunter myself, finding love in the haunt is not only a super hot premise, it's kind of the dream. This book was fun, steamy and actually makes me believe the author may have worked in a haunted house some point in their lives. Definitely recommend.
