Abide: A Pathway to Transformative Healing and Intimacy With Jesus

Rate this book
In this personal healing retreat from Heather Khym, cohost of the popular Abiding Together podcast, you are invited to break through the barriers that prevent you from trusting and experiencing the deep love of Jesus and be transformed by the freedom that comes when we vulnerably bring our entire selves to the foot of the Cross. Rooted in the teaching of Khym’s Vancouver-based ministry, Life Restoration, Abide shares scripture, essential Catholic teaching, and the author’s personal healing journey to reintroduce you to God as the Divine Healer, Restorer, and Miracle Worker. Khym offers you a compass to navigate your past as you dig into difficult memories that have disoriented your understanding of God and made you afraid to trust him. She challenges you to cast off your self-protective tendencies and to recognize your need for healing so you can be the person you were created to be. Jesus says, “Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit because apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:4–5) . We are meant to abide in Jesus , to unite ourselves to him. Yet over the course of our lives, we experience brokenness and loss, which lead us to doubt God’s presence. Khym challenges you to step outside your comfort zone so that you can Each chapter includes practical reflection-based exercises that help you recall troublesome memories, identify the roots of your feelings, and meditate on excerpts from scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church . You’ll come away with a renewed hope in the power of God to bring freedom to your fearful heart as you start to live a life restored in Christ, one that begins with and is sustained by an intimate relationship with Jesus.

A beautiful but simple read, one I really needed right now. Heather does a great job, a simplified “Be Healed”, very personal and relatable. The best part is I can hear her when I’m reading this as I’ve listened to way too many abiding together podcasts lolol

The Promise (Descr from Publisher):

Break through the barriers that prevent you from trusting and experiencing the deep love of Jesus… trade self-protective tendencies for recognition of own need for healing so can be the person you were created to be.

The Expectation (mine after reading the promise, etc):

I chose this book because I am focusing on a closer walk with God in 2022 & felt like it would be a great companion for my journey.

Quote:

We were made for more. We were not meant to live a mediocre life; rather to live a life of abundance in Jesus, abiding in him at every moment… The world desperately needs people who have been restored by the power of Jesus… it must begin with us.

What I connected with:

I connected with every page of this book. Lots of highlighting done via my Kindle! Khym is personal & relatable while also taking a strategic approach to God’s healing for your life. It was easy to read; but I had to stop after each chapter just to soak it in and reflect. All of her charts, diagrams and the reflection pieces at the end of each chapter certainly add to the worthiness of this read.

What I struggled with:

I didn’t find anything that I really struggled with on this one. I was continually thirsty for what was on the next page!

What I learned:

That I desperately need to surrender to my overwhelming thirst for God in the stillness & quietness of prayer & I can be assured that God not only will show up, He’s already there waiting on me… expecting me. .. knowing that I am coming. All I have to do is ask for Him for his blessing. Jesus’ name is enough.

How I was transformed:

I can’t put my finger on it exactly, but my daily quiet time in prayer and God’s Word is more focused. I show up with a more open & expectant heart. I get to be with God- who is “all in” when it comes to loving me.

I will recommend this to friends and family. I definitely want a hard copy of this book!

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own.

(Don’t let the dates fool you - I was interrupted with a week of funerals and illness - this is an easy, fast read if you don’t stop to soak in each chapter!)

“Life to the fullest is possible”. (Parece broma todas las veces que se repite esta frase en el libro).

To be honest, I didn't know what to expect with this book, but this was not it. I ended up stopping around 30% in.

As far as I can tell, it's basically a memoir with sprinkles of scripture in it. As someone who needs help with some healing and difficult times, this wasn't doing it at all for me.

I'm not saying it can't help someone else and that no one should try reading it, it just isn't what I thought it would be and isn't in anyway helpful to me.

Thank you to Netgalley and Ava Marie Press for an ARC. My opinions are mine and mine alone.

Beautiful Book

This book is a powerful reminder that we all carry wounds, but healing is always within reach. Heather shares her own journey with honesty and grace, pointing to Jesus Christ as the ultimate healer. Each chapter includes thoughtful, practical questions that encourage deep reflection and personal application. Through her words, Heather gently guides readers toward the healing and restoration God desires for them. This book is not just a story—it’s an invitation to embrace healing and transformation.

I wanted to love this book, but for me, it was weak. I think if you haven’t read many books on Jesus and healing, this would be a GREAT place to start with some very useful examples and tools. However, if you’ve done a lot of healing work, it doesn’t add anything. I’m usually of the mindset that you can “take at least one thing from everything you read”, but I honestly couldn’t give my time or energy to finishing this read. I will say I appreciate Heather’s openness and expression of her relationship with Christ- it is beautiful. This just wasn’t a good fit book for me.

I was already familiar with Heather Khym's voice, but I could hear it gently nudging me as I read. This is the fastest I have devoured a book in a very long time. There is no judgment, only truth, encouragement and patience are found in these pages.
As a lover of therapy and Jesus, I loved this book. It wasn't preachy and she wasn't pretending to be a mental health professional, she simply shares her encounters of healing with Christ and asks us to follow him as well.

Amazing

I found this book in a time of great distress in life. I was already familiar with Heather from her podcast, and her husband Jake's podcast too, but didn't know what to expect from the book. It took me two months of reading and re reading to chew on the richness of content. I encountered Jesus in every scripture reference and miracle story, and would spend time with Him over and over. This book will forever be apart of my discipleship journey!

Bueeeen libro!

3.5 - It’s a perfect starting place! I think I was just expecting it to go a bit deeper, and the last 1/4 I was ready to be done as I felt like it was getting a little repetitive. But could be a great read depending on where you are in your spiritual journey!

Great stories and lessons in this book. It wasn’t the best fit for me personally as I’m not Catholic but was a good read for those who are! Well written!

Good supplement to the podcast but not necessarily new material if you are a loyal podcast listener
