This is a gallery of local Indian markets, Gajras and peppermints. It serves Metkut and adhesives on a dinner plate. There are earrings on soft boards and Marlboros on the college canteen floor. It has Ghungroos on a Christmas wreath and embroidery hoops stuck in rusty buses. It echoes the walls of a boho apartment and art classes in kaleidoscopic brothels.
This is a gallery of the supernatural, divine, extraordinary and inherent – the power within us and all living beings – of Delivery Executive Manju, Architect Gargi, Professor Miller, Vagabond Bilva, Security Guard Amar Chacha and umpteen.
The first ray of the sun - ‘Shalaka’ hails from India’s orange city Nagpur. Her first book “Orenda - flash fiction based in modern India” stands taller as a milestone, starting her literary journey as an author.
Started her journey by publishing poems, became an editor for college magazines, completed writing challenges and is now exploring spoken word poetry, with national forums like Kommune (scout club). She’s also a core team member of the Kalinga Literary Festival and a moderator at the Orange City Literary Festival.
Kulkarni is an artist, TEDx Speaker, social volunteer and global corporate branding/neuromarketing professional currently working with Microland. Was honoured with a national award - Women Disruptors 2021 this March.
She quotes- "People are inspired by stories and stories are inspired by people. And that’s my favourite cycle." and often forgets about her electrical engineering degree!
Orenda: (n.) - a mystical force present in all people that gives us the strength to affect change in ourselves and in the world.
This short story collection is as beautiful as the meaning of its title. It is a collection of stories that will touch your heart and make you feel a variety of emotions. Sometimes, the stories will make you nostalgic and sometimes they will wrap you in the warmth of human relations while other times they will put you in a thought.
The writing style is smooth and effortlessly beautiful like a river running through its natural course. The language used in this book is simple and accessible making this book beginner friendly. The title of all chapters are as beautiful and well thought as the title of the collection. Some of the stories are real life stories while others are purely fictional. If you are looking for a well written short story collection, Orenda will be a perfect choice.
Shalaka Kulkarni brings a charming, vibrant and unforgettable compilation of flash fiction, these are very short tales and despite its length I have fallen in love this book called 'Orenda'.
Each tale comes with a quirky title, which is unique and special. The storytelling and writing seriously surprised me, it just paints vivid imagery and you will feel raw emotions starting to form. What's the best part is that, these stories feel like any typical story but emotional build up it provides is seriously amazing. It had so many layers to peel and I had so much fun just reading tale after tale, thinking hard about family, love and more.
Honestly if you are going through a reading slump this book would be a great pick, it's addictive and unforgettable that will get your emotions in a bunch.
As a 90s kid, I enjoyed the flash fiction format of stories. The best part is its ability to cut across people from various strata in India and make you feel through them.
What it does well: 1. Makes you feel for various characters across chapters 2. Picks a beautiful title that summarizes each chapter 3. Does not get very mushy or predictable
What it could have done more: 1. Gone to more depth on at least some stories. 2. May be taken some characters beyond those in Indiaa?
All in all, a great read if you are looking to spend a nostalgic afternoon or even if you want a thought provoking little storu to drive you through the week. Can also be a great gift to people who are trying to get back to reading or want to explore flash fiction genre !
Looking forward to reading more from this author !
There are 52 stories in this flash fiction collection, a story for each week of the year. But you can read it within a day too, because it's definitely a page-turner.
This is author's debut published book. I am surprised, as her writing style is unique, contemporary, and punchy, packed with good story-telling that is short, crisp and twisty.
Each chapter title is a word, both Indian and foreign language. And it is author's personal experiences mostly — the people who have influenced her (family, friends, strangers) and the places she had travelled and lived in.
These everyday stories are feel-good, heartwarming, as well as hard-hitting, too — because it is all about people and places.
My ultimate favourite stories, if I had to pick, are two: 𝚀𝚞𝚒𝚛𝚘𝚖𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚒𝚊 (palmistry in Spanish) and 𝚁𝚎𝚐𝚎𝚗𝚋𝚘𝚐𝚎𝚗 (rainbow in German). The unexpected revelation at the end made me pause for a few minutes to gather myself in both these stories.
The other stories I loved in this collection include 'Teen Patak', 'Mitochondria', 'Moxie', 'Mauszeiger', 'Ekadashi', 'Gullak', 'Jani Dekha Hobe', and 'Smara'.
This is such a promising debut and an interesting read, and Shalaka is a "one-to-watch" author, and am waiting for her next piece of literary magic.
Trying to be as objective as I can here, considering this book is written by my own loved one. Definitely going to be a little positively biased though, because I've seen her put in a tremendous amount of hardwork into this baby! So here are my thoughts on this book and why I loved it. I'll speak about a few of my favourites too.
Some stories give you a warm and sweet feeling, whereas others end with an unexpected yet thought provoking twist. Some make you think through the layers, while some make you nostalgic of the old times. And there are some that are bittersweet and others that simply break your heart.
My most favourite one has to be 'Farmaish'. It gave me goosebumps and invoked a desire... the desire to have someone who will always cherish me even after I'm gone. On slightly similar lines, other stories that invoked feelings of true love are 'Palindrome', 'Mizpah' and another bittersweet one 'Regenbogen'.
Another one I loved is 'Charmolypi'. I wasn't expecting the ending at all! Same with 'Souvenir' and 'Coup de grâce'.
'Gajra' took me back to simpler times, when we still had real human connections with the people around us. It's rare to strike such deep connections now and the old world is possibly never going to come back, so that's what makes this story extra heartwarming.
'Angara' was personally relatable to me in the sense that my parents had also made me carry a tiny paper packet of incense ashes all throughout my life wherever I went. It was supposed to be holy and was to be used before extremely important tasks or even in times of great adversity. Sadly, I had to get rid of it before getting on a plane to Europe as I feared that the officers might think I'm carrying something illegal. To this day, this is my heavily guarded secret. I can never tell my parents that I threw away those holy ashes!
'Comilona' just broke my heart. Sadly, it's not fiction. This is the harsh reality for a lot of children in India.
'Ekadashi' was sweet. I wish I had an Aajji like that. I've missed out on a lot of wholesome family moments because I grew up in Mumbai, in a nuclear family setting and never really had the chance to celebrate festivals to a large extent. Sometimes I wish I came from the interiors of Maharashtra where people still celebrate festivals in the traditional way!
I have to give a special mention about 'Goombah', because I can vouch that this little story truly happened with Shalaka and me. We made a 4-legged sweet friend on our trip to Goa.
Overall, this is a book that can be read and re-read. An absolutely heartwarming gem to treasure.
My rating: 3.7/5 A collection of fifty-two flash fiction stories, this book takes the reader through the journey of life. Each story makes us recall precious moments from our everyday routines, bringing on a smile or leading to a trail of thoughts that remain with us for a long time.
What I liked about the book: -> The title of each story is quite intriguing. Most of them are a lesson in global vocabulary, teaching us terms we might not be familiar with. -> The stories revolve around different topics, providing a variety in reading. -> Most of the stories are relatable and have some wonderful life lessons as well. -> The book sparks so many emotions - from nostalgia to deeply touching stories, from some light simple life experiences to thought-provoking takeaways.
What I did not like about the book: -> The language is colloquial and sometimes the sentences start and end abruptly. -> Though most stories are entertaining, they do lack depth. -> Some stories were a little confusing to understand and get the context of.
Quotable quotes: -> Don’t you think all stories are incomplete? I mean, people leave and people die. We are strangled by the baggage but we survive. -> It's the experiences that make us feel alive. -> Life is a journey, we are the drivers and hopes are our fuel. -> In the end, it's not about what it is, but how it makes you feel.
Orenda by Shalaka Kulkarni is a collection of short stories set in the 90's India.
There are 52 stories and all of them are really different yet beautiful. Anyone who has lived in the 90s India can relate to a lot of the stories as it discusses about the changes that have come to India when it developed to modern India. But the great thing is that not only them, but anyone can read this book and experience all the nostalgia, and the feelings that are conveyed through the stories easily as the author has written all of the stories in a really immersive manner, I found that to be great. As sometimes such stories can be less immersive and the reader might feel like they're looking into the story rather than being in it, so in that manner this collection did really good .
Each story is only 2 to 3 pages long but packs a lot. It's like a whole new experience in each of the stories.
I personally thought that this was a really good collection. If you like to read historical fiction, or short stories, this book is a good pick. Also the stories are really short, so you can read one or two everyday and it'd be a really great time. I read it like that and I thought reading a couple of stories now and then was fun. The language is beautiful and really easy to follow, so I definitely recommend going for it.
Flash Fiction is a collection of short stories which is short with deep meaning consisting of nearly only 100 words. There are fifty two flash fiction stories in this book. All the stories are imaginary and has a really good flow with intresting plot. The title of each chapter / story is intriguing which will make u crave to read them further. The stories has really a big impact on a perspective of a person and make us question ourselves to a perticular level.
All the stories have a different character, every story is different from each other which for me was kind of a set back. Because It made me read for a longer time than usual. As each story is different from the previous one I can pick up any story any time and have a good read. But for very small time. The thing that I liked about this book is the way stories are narrated. It takes a really great patience and subtle mind to tell a story with such a deep meaning.
The book is short obviously because all are flash fiction. Each story consists of 100 words min. The language of the book is rich and exploring. Author tried to grip its readers by such a impactful narration. For some readers it might take a long especially for someone like me because I have read so many books with same continuing stories. This book was a good change for me.

🍁A collection of flash fiction with oh-so-unique names like Gajra, Regenbogen and Kufi,Gullak, Vedriti, Hayat, has made this book an absolute classic for a modern day India
🍁There are very few anthologies in books and movies which actually justify the purpose of curating anthologies and this book is definitely one of them. 🍁Revolving around the most of the trends which took place around 90s India, the author has beautifully curated the paradigm shift between past India and the present, I would say it has been like sitting in a time machine. 🍁Also to devour this book I would suggest this one for intermediate readers, else beginners might be lost, but if you spend more time, the outcome with which you arrive at won't be disappointing that's absolutely a guarentee! 🍁 Concluding to it I also did read up on the author and I was impressed by her achievements, an electrical engineer, marketing professional, and now recently an awardee of Women Disruptors 2021 and currently she is exploring spoken word poetry. 🍁 I'm glad I had the opportunity to read this book! It really leaves you with a deep understanding and a positive conclusion, that "India is changing, and it's changing for the better".
This book tells us about how Indians have transformed whether it is their thinking or the way of living, they have come long way.As girls have not been promoted on any matter earlier but today in modern India they are equal to men. This book is about everyone who have been transformed from past India to a new modern India.
Each story is only 2 to 3 pages long but packs a lot. It's like a whole new experience in each of the stories. If you love reading literary fiction you will like this collection. Each story has a different theme, with a beautiful storyline and different characters. The ones who have lived in India in the '90s can relate to these stories. The author has written flash fiction stories about Palindrome, Farmaish, Wabi-Sabi, Charmolypi, Mitochondria, Gullak, etc .
This is a gallery of the supernatural, divine, extraordinary and inherent – the power within us and all living beings – of Delivery Executive Manju, Architect Gargi, Professor Miller, Vagabond Bilva, Security Guard Amar Chacha and umpteen. This is orenda . This is us . To khow more about it go through the book.Language is quite easy to read it. Writing was also awesome . It is a very interesting book . I suggest everyone to read it . I really loved this book very much......
Orenda by Shalaka Kulkarni is a fiction based book and contains beautiful curated short stories of India. From the story of an old man who still remember his death wife by everyday by listening to her favorites songs to the story of a sister accepting his brother's homosexuality, these are some of the stories of this book based in modern India. Each story is just two or three pages, each starting with a unique one worded title such as Gajra, Regenbogen and Kufi. Through such intriguing titles the authors has introduced to us new words not only of our country as well as all of others and explained it's meaning as well. . . . With a total of 52 stories this book is a perfect short reads. The only thing a setback for me in this book was that some stories were left on an edge or were incomplete, which could have been given more words to. Overall the stories of Orenda are intriguing to it's readers. . . . ➡️Ratings- 3.5/5 ⭐ ➡️ Favorite quote- "We all are temporary our stories too" “Don’t you think all stories are incomplete? I mean, people leave and people die. We are strangled by the baggage but we survive.”
“Orenda” by Shalaka Kulkarni is a beautiful and heart-warming anthology of fifty two flash fictional stories that portrays the ramblings of normal people and their routine mundane life in an artistic and creative way. Inspired by the modern India and the new facets of transforming society, these stories not only capture the positive vibes or expression of characters or scenes but also catapult the readers to strive for more nuanced and progressive way of life and thinking.
From Avik’s beautiful analogy between cell structure and his home in “Mitochondria” to Paarth’s courageous expression of his thoughts to her fiance in “Jouska”. These seemingly simple and relatable stories convey subtle emotions and messages to its readers. It’s really wonderful to see how the author weaves the entire narrative based on an absolutely unusual word and seed and shape it in a deep and meaningful form.
Overall, written in a simple and lucid language, “Orenda” truly stays with its meaning and essence and offers it’s readers a worthy content to relish and ponder about. Would recommend it to everyone!
A work when accomplished, demands result regardless of the result being a positive one or the negative sided one. Quite rare are the occasions in the modern era, where one gets to feel nostalgia with things around as majorly, everything around now, is either newly developed or is refurbished. I feel this book serves thoroughly well on what one would prefer to look over the country as. With terms thoroughly researched and then jotted down, I feel this book has the piece of work suffice enough for one to delve into it with the terms used from the era, century and period forgotten. Hailing from the period of 90's this one works both like a treat and a way easy to greet back with the olden days of life with an aroma inbuilt through the narration rich in class from the author's end. Book speaks of different stories and each story is made to deliver quite a bunch of worthy moments throughout the read. To opt for this read, I suppose it's s good choice if one's fond of coming across something way too new and nostalgic at the same time.
After long time I found a very different Title of the book. The book name Orenda is very beautiful and unique one. The word itself means any spritual energy in the people living in a particular place. So ofcourse the book has been written on Indians written on the Indians. The changing lifestyle and the real state of Indians have been shown. The topics have been choosen so wisely. There are total 52 chapters. Some of the chapters were amazing like Gullak, Circuit , Kufi , Magari. Mine favourite of all was Mitrochondria as the story hit me differently. A child coming back from night school. And he is tired very badly. The teacher is also seen very tired. The main idea we see is how day school are changing to night shift. And secondly the mother love for her child. At night she is awake to feed her son dinner.
Other stories were also up to the mark. Really overwhelmed by reading this story.
The language used were so different and I came acquainted with many new words. The cover of the book is so attractive. The colour attracted me a lot to read the book.
Book: Orenda: flash fiction based in modern India Author: Shalaka Kulkarni Rating: 5/5
The book is a collection of flash fiction stories. Each story has a different theme, with a beautiful storyline and different characters. The ones who have lived in India in the '90s can relate to these stories. The author has written flash fiction stories about Palindrome, Farmaish, Wabi-Sabi, Charmolypi, Mitochondria, Gullak, Vedriti, Magari, and many more.
Two of my favorite stories are: Palindrome - a word, phrase, or sequence that reads the same backward as forwards. Wabi-Sabi - meaning accepting the imperfect in Japanese.
Every story has a great impact on the reader's mind. I like the way the author has used the regional words and it will allure the readers' minds. The title and cover of the book are apt. The writing style is intriguing and the language is simple to understand. I enjoyed reading these short stories as I could relate to some of them. I would recommend it to everyone!!
Orenda is a book containing several short stories. This is a good and approachable fiction read. Happy, Nostalgia & Mesmerizing read!
Two of the best stories in the book according to me are as follows: • Coup de grâce Coup de grâce ~ a French phrase for a final blow or shot given to kill a wounded person. • Culaccino ~ a water ring, a mark left on a surface by the bottom of a wet glass or vessel.
I would advise budding readers to grab the book and to through the beautiful stories portrayed in a lucid manner.
Every single story here is portrayed with a great depth of imagination. The storie will for sure have a long lasting effect on the minds and soul of the readers.
The author must be appreciated for scribbling such a book with such a depth. And yes, the language used here is highly easy and relatable. Cover page is also attractive. Highly recommended.
" It's strange that we try to escape from things and then we miss then. Maybe it's natural maybe it's all about realization"- One of my favourite lines from the book.
This is a wonderful book of flash fiction, it has 52 stories of one or two pages each. Each story is out life and life experiences. I did feel very nostalgic by the end of the book and I also learnt a lot. It's a beautifully written book and the author has done a great job in evoking our emotions with this book ( not many books do that). I also did like the language of the book, crisp and simple and every story had a message. So I was very intrigued to read to read all the stories quickly.
I particularly like the story Goombah, it's about a holiday in Goa and feel sad to leave a dog whom they had encountered in Goa. I had a very similar experience so I could connect to the story totally. The book feels very real and as I said earlier alot of emotions were awakened for me.
Orenda is a bucket of short stories that will leave you on the edge of an emotional trail. The stories are simple and short with a relatable plot arrangement that attracts all the readers to indulge in their reading experience. The stories represent a perceptive of modern India and its manifestation. But the striking feature of this book is its bond-building mechanism with the readers. The characters are crafted in such a lively manner that at times everyone will feel emphatic towards various event formations. Filled with 52 heartfelt stories, this book is a perfect fit for beginners. One can finish this book merely within an hour, and it can accompany you during a train or car ride. The sense of euphoria and nostalgia created by these is magnificent to go through. I even liked the book cover, draped in mint green displaying bits from every story in the form of a heartbeat. If you are into simple contemporary writing, then pick this book up in this instant.
Orenda is an interesting concept for a book; Flash Fiction being a yet under-explored genre in India. Shalaka does a fine job with it and has kept stories (52 in all) restricted to the short-format. Some of the stories are very well laid out and leave you with a mild bout of nostalgia while others are free flowing.
Mostly written in a very easy to understand language, the price is that other than few good ones, many stories lack layers and creative articulation (that comes with more words and sentences and ink). The power that the writing is, builds up fine (because author seems to have a good command over her craft) but it short-circuits prematurely way before reaching a natural crescendo. And that’s where I got miffed. It was as if every-time I am riding a wave, someone turns off the jet right when it started feeling exciting.
But having said that, it is easy to spot the promise and for that best wishes to the author.
