An enjoyable enough story but the "Z-Rays" concept just didn't feel like it fit within the usual tone of Five stories, being so sci-fi / fantasy.

Full disclosure, I used to be a huge fan of Enid Blyton's Famous Five series. I own all the 21 books in the series. I have read them several times over the years when I was a kid.

This was supposed to be a sequel to my favorite group of young investigators, so I picked up a few books excitedly when I saw them at a bookstore. However, this series could not come even close to capturing the magic of the original. I never had the desire to go through all the books in this series. Truth be told, it felt more like Nancy Drew than Famous Five. But even Nancy Drew has better character development and is very addictive. This one felt just like a poor imitation of the original characters with no spirit or heart.

I loved the Famous Five books when I was a kid. I don't recall much about them anymore though. What I do remember about this one was that it was a bit of a far-fetched sci-fi + amateur spy tale that involves a powerful new invention that must not fall into the wrong hands.

I'd recommend this series for kids who love adventure stories coupled with mystery and detective elements. It's like a younger version of the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew.
