I'm a Yankee fan... So- I want to read about the history of the team, and this book started out like that.
However- it seems that there was more of a focus on what I have lived through, the teams of the 90's, I've learned a lot about the teams in the late 70's with Munson, Jackson, Dent, Guidry, etc. There really was not a lot about the early days of the Yankees. I did appreciate the first few chapters talking about the beginnings, first owner, and originating of a GM, farm system development; but it was just scratching the surface. It didn't actual go into a lot of details. That was a let down. I wanted to see more about the early days, Ruth, Dickey, Howard, Gehrig, etc. There was not a lot about them.
It was well written- and I particularly liked the chapter about Yogi Berra, but as for new information which I was hoping for- I didn't get much.
It’s a thoughtful book but I would recommend it for younger fans or anyone who wants to know more about Yankee history. It would be perfect for them. For anyone who has read a lot about Yankee history, most of the stories are ones you’ve heard about many times before.
Solid book! Gives a pretty basic dive into the history of the Yankees. As someone who is interested in any sports facts, I was intrigued, all while being able to learn a lot more about the new club that I work for 👍🏼
As a fan...I really enjoyed the several short chapters on prominent rivals, stars, history and more. It is actually a reference book, curated in a minor that allows the reader to quickly recall certain major aspects of the team's past. Not for everyone, but for me, a nice, leisurely summer read.
Good reporting, especially on the 70s and 90s teams. I think this kind of thing is best suited to new fans. There's not a ton here that a dedicated, longtime fan with an interest in history wouldn't know about.
A look at the most significant franchise in American sports history ~ the New York Yankees have accumulated 27 World Series victories and includes stories on the Mount Rushmore of Bronx Bombers ~ Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, and Joe DiMaggio.
