I can attest, reading Madeline Bocaro's book my Yoko Ono music collection has increased ten fold. And I am thankful for Bocaro for sparking this life changing rediscovery of one of the most influential artist, writer, musician, songwriter and icons of the 20th Century and beyond.
I am still very enjoyably in the middle of this exquisitely, exhaustively detailed work on one of the 20th and 21st century’s most important women. As a kid who knew the Vietnam War was a moral and economic vacuum for the U.S. and the entire planet, I was thrilled when Yoko and John joined the troops, officers, and even U.S. intelligence community in the mutiny against it. That thrill was quickly chilled by the ridiculous and virulent attacks on Yoko—which emanated even from some self-proclaimed hipster rock critics. So if you, like this writer, are a diehard fan of Yoko, you may find the fact-based, yet unintentional refutation of Yoko’s naysayers strangely anger inducing. I have had to put this book down to garden and reflect upon why people have shown such hatred to this woman. When I severely sprained my ankle this spring, I returned to this book—and found Yoko’s life very inspirational. In a non-chronological, yet strangely effective design, the book explores the triumphant life she built by turning the militaristic misogyny she encountered repeatedly into endless art and love. Anyone who thinks they know Yoko Ono’s story will realize they don’t have even half the story—unless they start reading this book. It belongs on the nightstand, in the travel bag, and on any table where friends will converse. Dr Lisa Barr, Rochester, NY
Being a fan and lover of Yoko for many decades I have had the magical experience of reading this book and falling in love with her again and again as I turned each page. Madeline Bocaro's in your mind the infinite universe of Yoko Ono is like stepping into Yoko's world and never wanting to leave. The beauty of this book is you never have to leave. I can just open to any page and like time travel I think I am there with Yoko, John and all of people in their lives. Because Madeline writes the book through Yoko's own words we learn everything there is to know about this incredible woman who has influenced our World in such a unique way. Madeline debunks all the lies and delights us with things we didn't know. If you are a fan you will be overjoyed with the book and it will be a treasure to keep close to you. If you are not a fan you will become one. Yoko and John's love story unfolds in a beautiful way and reaches out through the pages. We see Yoko as the brilliant artist she is all on own before and after her time with John. I can't find the words to give the book the justice it deserves. You must read it and be a believer. Thank you Madeline for sharing with us this brilliant masterpiece about such an incredible woman.
I call this book The Bible of Yoko-ness. The author has saved from her childhood until now anything written about Yoko for her archives. I have never seen such an extensive account of Yoko’s family and her childhood. The early years of Yoko’s art, especially her performance pieces, are covered in scrupulous detail. Thinking myself a lifelong Beatlemaniac I was shocked at how much I didn’t know about Yoko’s life with John. Madeline seems to channel Yoko’s thoughts. Madeline offers a feast of interviews where Yoko speaks for herself. One of the author’s brilliant mind-melds with Yoko: “Dreaming is the best gift we have. It is Yoko’s way of life.” I highly recommend this book to those curious about Yoko and why John became her biggest fan.
